Abstract:Gauge theory underpins the quantum field theories of the standard model, and in a previous paper was shown via a geometric approach to describe classical electromagnetism in a form which approximates QED. Here we formalize and generalize the notion of a geometric gauge theory, then apply this framework to classical physical models, including an improved Lagrangian for matter field electromagnetism. We find a remarkably consistent series of actions, with straightforward limits under which each previous one may be obtained. Ancillary benefits include a gauge-independent Galilean Lagrangian, a geometric interpretation for the unusual metric dependence of four-momentum, a modern treatment of the effects of worldline variation on the four-current, a gauge theory of gravity which includes a matter field, and consistent units for matter field electromagnetism.

Abstract:In a low energy effective theory, the fields of heavy particles with mass $m$ and total momentum $p$ depend on both a velocity $v$ and a residual momentum $k$ such that $p =mv +k$. However, there is some arbitrariness in such a description because one may also use a slightly different velocity with a compensating change in the residual momentum. This non-uniqueness is the origin of an invariance under such a reparameterization which imposes non-trivial constraints on the theory. The implications of this invariance for effective theories of heavy spin-0, 1/2, and 1 fields is investigated.
Suppressing Gauge Drift in Quantum Simulations with Gauge Transformations

Abstract:The simulation of quantum lattice gauge theories faces the major challenge of maintaining gauge invariance, as various errors in the simulation push the state of the system out of the physical subspace of the system's exponentially larger Hilbert space. This paper outlines a method, based off of previous work, that uses gauge transformations in two ways. Firstly, the method exploits the Zeno effect by conducting frequent projections to suppress gauge drift. These projections utilize local gauge transformations to destructively interfere unphysical amplitudes via coupling to an ancillary qubit while the physical amplitudes are left untouched, up to a less than unity normalization factor. Secondly, gauge transformations are conducted throughout the time evolution of the system to hamper the speed of gauge drift. This paper demonstrates this method on a pure 1D SU$(2)$ toy model.

Dynamical constraints on pseudo-gauge transformations

Abstract:Classical pseudo-gauge transformations are discussed in the context of hydrodynamic models of heavy-ion collisions. A decomposition of the pseudo-gauge transformation into Lorentz-invariant tensors is made, which allows for better interpretation of its physical consequences. For pseudo-gauge transformations connecting two symmetric energy-momentum tensors, we find that the super-potential $\Phi^{\lambda, \mu \nu}$ must obey a conservation law of the form $\partial_\lambda \Phi^{\lambda, \mu \nu} = 0$. This equation, referred to below as the STS condition, represents a constraint that is hardly possible to be satisfied for tensors constructed out of the basic hydrodynamic variables such as temperature, baryon chemical potential, and the hydrodynamic flow. However, in a special case of the boost-invariant flow, the STS condition is automatically fulfilled and a non-trivial residual pseudo-gauge transformation defined by a single scalar field is allowed. In this case the bulk and shear viscosity coefficients become pseudo-gauge dependent; however, their specific linear combination appearing in the equations of motion remains pseudo-gauge invariant. This finding provides new insights into the role of pseudo-gauge transformations and pseudo-gauge invariance.

Abstract:We show that the naively expected large virtual heavy fermion effects in low energy processes may be screened if the process under consideration contains external gauge bosons constrained by gauge invariance. We illustrate this by a typical example of the process gamma gamma-->b (b) over bar. Phenomenological implications are also briefly indicated.

Abstract:We discuss gauge transformations in QED coupled to a charged spinor field, and examine whether we can gauge-transform the entire formulation of the theory from one gauge to another, so that not only the gauge and spinor fields, but also the forms of the operator-valued Hamiltonians are transformed. The discussion includes the covariant gauge, in which the gauge condition and Gauss's law are not primary constraints on operator-valued quantities; it also includes the Coulomb gauge, and the spatial axial gauge, in which the constraints are imposed on operator-valued fields by applying the Dirac-Bergmann procedure. We show how to transform the covariant, Coulomb and spatial axial gauges to what we call ``common form,'' in which all particle excitation modes have identical properties. We also show that, once that common form has been reached, QED in different gauges has a common time-evolution operator that defines time-translation for states that represent systems of electrons and photons. By combining gauge transformations with changes of representation from standard to common form, the entire apparatus of a gauge theory can be transformed from one gauge to another.

Abstract:Starting from a theory of heavy particles and antiparticles, the path integral formulation of an effective field theory which describes the low momentum interactions is presented. The heavy degrees of freedom are identified and explicitly integrated out from the functional integral of the full theory. Using this method, the effective Lagrangian, which may be calculated to arbitrary subleading order in an inverse mass expansion, is derived for fields of spin-0, 1/2, and 1.
Derivation of the Gauge Link in Light Cone Gauge

Abstract:In light cone gauge, a gauge link at light cone infinity is necessary for transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution to restore the gauge invariance in some specific boundary conditions. We derive such transverse gauge link in a more regular and general method. We find the gauge link at light cone infinity naturally arises from the contribution of the pinched poles: one is from the quark propagator and the other is hidden in the gauge vector field in light cone gauge. Actually, in the amplitude level, we have obtained a more general gauge link over the hypersurface at light cone infinity which is beyond the transverse direction. The difference of such gauge link between semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan processes can also be obtained directly and clearly in our derivation.
Light Spin-One Particles Imply Gauge Invariance

Abstract:Recently, calculations which consider the implications of anomalous trilinear gauge-boson couplings, both at tree-level and in loop-induced processes, have been criticized on the grounds that the lagrangians employed are not \gwk gauge invariant. We prove that, in fact, the general Lorentz-invariant and $U(1)_\em$ invariant but {\it not} $SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1)$ invariant action is equivalent to the general lagrangian in which $SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1)$ appears but is nonlinearly realized. We demonstrate this equivalence in an explicit calculation, and show how it is reconciled with loop calculations in which the different formulations can (superficially) appear to give different answers. In this sense any effective theory containing light spin-one particles is seen to be automatically gauge invariant.

Abstract:In this note we show that a "dynamical" interaction for arbitrary spin can be constructed in a straightforward way if gauge and Lorentz transformations are placed on the same foundation. As Lorentz transformations act on space-time coordinates, gauge transformations are applied to the gauge field. Placing these two transformations on the same ground means that all quantized field like spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 spinors are functions not only of the coordinates but also of the gauge field components. This change of perspective solves a couple of problems occuring for higher spin fields like the loss of causality, bad high-energy properties and the deviation of the gyromagnetic ratio from its constant value g=2 for any spin, as caused by applying the minimal coupling. Starting with a "dynamical" interaction, a non-minimal coupling can be derived which is consistent with causality, the expectation for the gyromagnetic ratio, and well-behaved for high energies. As a consequence, on this stage the (elektromagnetic) gauge field has to be considered as classical field. Therefore, standard quantum field theory cannot be applied. Despite this inconvenience, such a common ground is consistent with an old dream of physicists almost a century ago. Our approach, therefore, indicates a straightforward way to realize this dream.

Topological Equivalence Theorem and Double-Copy for Chern-Simons Scattering Amplitudes

Abstract:We study the mechanism of topological mass-generation for 3d Chern-Simons gauge theories and propose a brand-new Topological Equivalence Theorem to connect scattering amplitudes of the physical gauge boson states to that of the transverse states under high energy expansion. We prove a general energy cancellation mechanism for $N$-point physical gauge boson amplitudes, which predicts large cancellations of $E^{4-L}\to E^{(4-L)- N}$ at any $L$-loop level ($L\geqslant 0$). We extend the double-copy approach to construct massive graviton amplitudes and study their structures. We newly uncover a series of strikingly large energy cancellations $E^{12}\to E^1$ of the tree-level four-graviton scattering amplitude under high energy expansion and establish a new correspondence between the two energy cancellations in the topologically massive Yang-Mills gauge theory and the topologically massive gravity theory. We further study the scattering amplitudes of Chern-Simons gauge bosons and gravitons in the nonrelativistic limit.

Abstract:We point out that local symmetries can masquerade as discrete global symmetries to an observer equipped with only low-energy probes. The existence of the underlying local gauge invariance can, however, result in observable Aharonov-Bohm-type effects. Black holes can therefore carry discrete gauge charges---a form of nonclassical ``hair.'' Neither black-hole evaporation, wormholes, nor anything else can violate discrete gauge symmetries. In supersymmetric unified theories such discrete symmetries can forbid proton-decay amplitudes that might otherwise be catastrophic.

Gauge Invariance for Classical Massless Particles with Spin

Abstract:Wigner's quantum-mechanical classification of particle-types in terms of irreducible representations of the Poincaré group has a classical analogue, which we extend in this paper. We study the compactness properties of the resulting phase spaces at fixed energy, and show that in order for a classical massless particle to be physically sensible, its phase space must feature a classical-particle counterpart of electromagnetic gauge invariance. By examining the connection between massless and massive particles in the massless limit, we also derive a classical-particle version of the Higgs mechanism.

Abstract:Parton distributions contain factorizable final state interaction effects originating from the fast-moving struck quark interacting with the target spectators in deeply inelastic scattering. We show that these interactions give rise to gauge invariance of the transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions. As compared to previous analyses, our study demonstrates the existence of extra scaling contributions from transverse components of the gauge potential at the light-cone infinity. They form a transverse gauge link which is indispensable for restoration of the gauge invariance of parton distributions in the light-cone gauge where the gauge potential does not vanish asymptotically. Our finding helps to explain a number of features observed in a model calculation of structure functions in the light-cone gauge.
UBVI CCD photometry of two old open clusters NGC 1798 and NGC 2192

Abstract:We present UBVI CCD photometry of two open clusters NGC 1798 and NGC 2192 which were little studied before. Color-magnitude diagrams of these clusters show several features typical for old open clusters: a well-defined main-sequence, a red giant clump, and a small number of red giants. The main sequence of NGC 1798 shows a distinct gap at V ~ 16.2 mag. From the surface number density distribution we have measured the size of the clusters, obtaining 8'.3 (= 10.2 pc) for NGC 1798 and 7'.3 (= 7.5 pc) for NGC 2192. Then we have determined the reddening, metallicity, and distance of these clusters using the color-color diagrams and color-magnitude diagrams: E(B-V)=0. 51\pm0.04, [Fe/H] = -0.47\pm0.15 dex and (m-M)_0=13.1\pm0.2 (d=4.2\pm 0.3 kpc) for NGC 1798, and E(B-V)=0.20\pm0.03, [Fe/H] = -0.31\pm0.15 dex and (m-M)_0=12.7\pm0.2 (d=3.5\pm 0.3 kpc) for NGC 2192. The ages of these clusters have been estimated using the morphological age indicators and the isochrone fitting with the Padova isochrones: 1.4 \pm 0.2 Gyrs for NGC 1798 and 1.1 \pm 0.1 Gyrs for NGC 2192. The luminosity functions of the main sequence stars in these clusters are found to be similar to other old open clusters. The metallicity and distance of these clusters are consistent with the relation between the metallicity and galactocentric distance of other old open clusters.

Abstract:In this paper, we review a general technique for converting the standard Lagrangian description of a classical system into a formulation that puts time on an equal footing with the system's degrees of freedom. We show how the resulting framework anticipates key features of special relativity, including the signature of the Minkowski metric tensor and the special role played by theories that are invariant under a generalized notion of Lorentz transformations. We then use this technique to revisit a classification of classical particle-types that mirrors Wigner's classification of quantum particle-types in terms of irreducible representations of the Poincaré group, including the cases of massive particles, massless particles, and tachyons. Along the way, we see gauge invariance naturally emerge in the context of classical massless particles with nonzero spin, as well as study the massless limit of a massive particle and derive a classical-particle version of the Higgs mechanism.

Abstract:We introduce the generalized Lorentz gauge condition in the theory of quantum electrodynamics into the general vector-tensor theories of gravity. Then we explore the cosmic evolution and the static, spherically symmetric solution of the four dimensional vector field with the generalized Lorenz gauge. We find that, if the vector field is minimally coupled to the gravitation, it behaves as the cosmological constant. On the other hand, if it is nonminimally coupled to the gravitation, the vector field could behave as vast matters in the background of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe. But it may be not the case. The weak, strong and dominant energy conditions, the stability analysis of classical and quantum aspects would put constraints on the parameters and so the equation of state of matters would be greatly constrained.

Non-compact gauge groups, tensor fields and Yang-Mills-Einstein amplitudes

Abstract:Scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills-Einstein theories have been investigated mostly for compact gauge groups. While non-compact gauge groups are not physically viable in Yang-Mills theory, non-compact gaugings feature prominently in the supergravity literature, where any choice of perturbative vacuum spontaneously breaks the gauge group to a compact subgroup. In this paper, we formulate double-copy constructions for several five-dimensional N=2 supergravities with non-compact gauge groups. On one side of the double copy, we employ amplitudes from a super-Yang-Mills theory with a massive hypermultiplet. On the other, we use amplitudes from particular non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills-scalar theories with massive fermions, chosen to obey constraints coming from color/kinematics duality. Supergravities with massive self-dual tensors in five dimensions are also considered, showing that tensors are straightforwardly realized as double copies of gauge-theory fermions with suitable choices of signs in the corresponding solutions of the Dirac equation. We present several examples of these constructions, noting in particular the appearance of Heisenberg groups in the supergravity gauge symmetry and, in some cases, the possibility of exotic tensor-vector matter couplings.
