Abstract:OBJECTIVE To analyze the characters of death causes of injury among residents in Beilun district from 2002 to 2007, and to provide scientific basis for drawing up injury preventive strategies. METHODS The data of underlying cause that initiated the sequence of events leading directly to death was coded and specified by the International Classification of Diseases(ICD-10). Disease burden of injury was evaluated by analysis of vital statistics data on age-standardized mortality, potential years of life lost(PYLL)in Beilun District from 2002 to 2007. RESULTS During this period, the annual age-standardized mortality of injury was 64.10 per 100 000, accounted for 12.63% of the total deaths, was the 3-ranked of leading death causes, and the PYLL of death caused by injury was 22 354 years accounted for 28.74% of the total, ranked 2nd. The 5 leading death causes of injury were ranked as follows: traffic accidents by motor vehicles, accidental falls, drowning, suicide, homicide. The primary death cause of injury in group aged 0～14 years was drowning, in group aged 15～44 years and 45～59 years were traffic accidents by motor vehicles, and in the elderly aged 60～years was accidental falls. CONCLUSION Injury has been one of the main death causes in Beilun district. It should be targeted by developing.comprehensive strategies based on community for prevention and control of injury
