Abstract:Cadmium sulfide tubular crystals, with the range of 0.5-2 mm in length, 10-20 mum in the external diameter and 3-6 mum in the wall thickness, were successfully grown in sodium hydroxide solution via a hydrothermal method at 350degreesC. XRD, SEM, and XPS methods characterized the products. A possible growth mechanism for the tubular structure was also proposed.

Abstract:Copper sulfide (Cu2S) micro-tubes with the diameter of ∼1–5 μm and the length of tens of μms were successfully synthesized by a simple thermal evaporation of zinc sulfide powders on copper substrates at ∼700 °C for about 1 h. The atom ratio of element Cu and S (2:1at.%) of single micro-tube confirmed that the micro-tube was Cu2S. The samples were indicated to be composed of monoclinic Cu2S and hexagonal β-Cu2S by X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. From the facts of results, a growth mechanism of copper sulfide micro-tubes was discussed briefly.

Abstract:A thioglycolic acid (TGA) assisted hydrothermal process has been developed to synthesize submicron-sized copper sulfide (CuS) hollow spheres via the reaction between copper sulfate (CuSO4) and thioacetamide (CH3CSNH2). X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the obtained product. Furthermore, the possible mechanism and the critical factors for the TGA-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of the CuS hollow spheres have been preliminarily presented.

Abstract:In this paper, a simple solution-based method has been applied to fabricate metal chalcogenide nanostructures. Abundant Cu2S nanowires on Cu substrates are successfully prepared through the in-situ hydrothermal reaction between sulfur powder and Cu foil. It is observed that the addition of hydrazine and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide plays an important role in the growth of Cu2S nanowires. A rolling-up mechanism of metal chalcogenide film is used to illustrate the growth of these nanostructures. UV–vis spectrum of Cu2S nanowires reveals obvious absorption below the wavelength of 900nm. The calculated band gap of Cu2S nanowires (1.5eV) shows obvious blue shift because of the quantum size effect.

Abstract:A facile, ionic liquid-assisted route was developed to synthesize hierarchical CuS flower-like submicrospheres at 80°C for 24 h. The method was based on a reaction between CuCl2 and thioacetamide (TAA) in aqueous solution with using ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) as an assisted agent. The chemical composition, morphology and size of CuS product were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. The result shows that the as-prepared CuS consists of flowery spheres with a diameter of 0·6 ∼ 1·0 μm, and these submicrospheres are, in fact, built by numerous nanoflakes with a thickness of 10 ∼ 20 nm. The optical property of CuS product was examined by UV-Vis. In general, we suggested an ecologically and environmentally friendly route for the syntheses of hierarchical metal chalcogenides structures in this paper.

Abstract:Antimony sulfide tetragonal (rectangular) prismatic tubular crystals with dimenions of 6-10 mm in length, 50-60 mum in width, and 5-15 mum in thickness were successfully synthesized for the first time via a hydrothermal reaction route from antimony trichloride and sodium thiosulfate in the presence of ammonium chloride at 198 degreesC.

Abstract:A solution route has been developed to synthesize covellite (CuS) nanostructures through the precitation reaction of CuCl2 · 2H2O, thiourea (Tu), and NaHCO3 in distilled water at room temperature. By regulating the concentration of Tu, CuS nanotubes and hollow nanospheres with diameters of 100–200 nm have been selectively prepared. Structural characterizations indicate that both nanotubes and hollow spheres are composed of CuS nanoparticles with diameters of about 5–10 nm. UV-Vis absorption and room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra display different morphology-related absorption phenomena for nanotubes and hollow nanospheres. A systematic investigation has been carried out to understand the factors influencing the CuS morphology. Two different routes are identified to explain the formation of the nanotubes and hollow nanospheres herein.
Growth of Cu2s Ultrathin Nanowires in A Binary Surfactant Solvent

Abstract:We demonstrate a facile solution-phase method for the synthesis of single-crystal, high aspect ratio, and ultrathin nanowires of hexagonal-phase Cu2S by thermal decomposition Of CuS2CNEt2 in a mixed surfactant solvent of dodecanethiol and oleic acid at 160 degrees C. Cu2S nanowires can be controllably synthesized with a diameter as thin as 1.7 nm and length up to tens of micrometers; they are usually aligned in the form of bundles with a thickness of hundreds of nanometers. Based on the experimental results, the formation mechanism of the ultrathin nanowires has been properly proposed. Some key synthetic parameters, which have a significant effect on the sizes and shapes of the products, have also been investigated in detail. UV-vis spectroscopy measurement reveals that the resultant ultrathin nanowires show a strong quantum size effect.
Phase-Selective Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Monodisperse Copper Sulfide Nanocrystals

Abstract:Single-crystalline, monodisperse copper sulfide nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes. and phases were successfully synthesized via a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly chemical reaction of CuCl, and S in oleylamine at 100-180 degrees C. It was found that the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] played the critical role for the control of the sizes, shapes, and phases of copper sulfide nanocrystals. The hexagonal CuS nanodisks, hexagonal CuS nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks, and monoclinic Cu1.75S nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks were obtained when the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] were 1:1, 2:3, and 2:1, respectively. It was believed that the van der Waals force and dipole-dipole interaction were responsible for the self-assembly of copper sulfide nanodisks. Finally, the copper sulfide nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron micrscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared, and its growth mechanism was primarily discussed.
Solvothermal Synthesis and Characterization of Uniform CdS Nanowires in High Yield

Abstract:Large-scale CdS nanowires with uniform diameter and high aspect ratios were synthesized using a simple solvothermal route that employed CdCl2 and S powder as starting materials, ethylenediamine (en) as the solvent. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that the products are hexagonal structure CdS nanowires with diameter of 40nm and length up to 10μm. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM) studies indicate the single-crystalline nature of CdS nanowires with an oriented growth along the c-axis direction. The optical properties of the products were characterized by optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. Based on the results of contrastive experiments, it is found that the sulfur source and the solvent play significant roles in the formation of uniform nanowires. A possible formation mechanism of nanowires is discussed.

Abstract:Pb5S2I6 meso-scale tubular crystals were grown from a hydrothermal reaction among PbCl2, (NH2)2CS and I2 at 155°C. The tubular crystals were arranged from 5 to 7mm in length and 10–30μm in cross section. A possible growth mechanism for Pb5S2I6 tubular crystals is proposed.

Abstract:Novel copper sulfide (CuS) hollow spheres composed of nanoflakes were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by treating copper (II)–thiourea complex from CuSO4·5H2O and thiourea at 180°C for 24h. When increasing the reaction temperature, much smaller hexagonal CuS nanoflakes generated from copper (II)–thiourea complex formed and self-assembled into hollow spheres. The products were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction scanning electron microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. It is found that the reaction temperature and copper (II)–thiourea complex are of importance to form hollow spherical superstructures. A possible mechanism is also discussed.

Abstract:Zinc sulfide powders were synthesized by hydrothermal salt solution under high pressure. It was found that the powders obtained grow according to a certain regulation forming a dendrite-like shape, such as leaf or saw-tooth. X-ray diffraction results show that the product has a cubic phase structure. However, the selected area’s electron diffraction shows that it has both cubic and hexagonal phase structures corresponding to different shapes. This is attributed to the isomeric state of ZnS. The orientation adhesion of nano-crystallites and the dendrite-like crystals formed by connecting crystallites were discussed by the growth unit model of anionic coordination polyhedrons. The mechanism for this formation is the growth direction of the dendrite-like crystals, which is along the stable direction of connecting anionic coordination polyhedrons, the fastest growth direction of the crystals. The symmetrical characteristic of the geometric distribution of the dendrite-like crystals corresponds to the symmetry of the crystal structure.

Abstract:Cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanorods have been prepared by a novel thioglycolic acid assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction shows that the nanorods are of hexagonal structure, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy further identifies that the CdS nanorods are single crystalline in nature. The optical properties of CdS nanorods were characterized by ultraviolet–vis and photoluminescence spectra. Furthermore, the mechanism for the TGA assisted hydrothermal synthesis of CdS nanorods has been preliminary presented.

Abstract:Micron-sized rod-like crystals of Cu2−xSe were successfully grown for the first time by a hydrothermal reaction from CuCl2·2H2O and Se powder at 60°C for 2h. X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images show that the product is cubic Cu2−xSe rod-like crystal and well crystallized. Hydrazine hydrate was used as solvent in the process and played an important role in the formation of rod-like Cu2−xSe crystals. The optical properties of Cu2−xSe, such as absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and Raman spectrum are also reported for the first time.

Abstract:Uniform CuS nanotubes of 30-90 nm in inner diameter and 20-50 nm in thickness, can be synthesized in large quantities by a facile solution reaction at 80 degrees C in ethylene glycol using Cu nanowires as sacrificial templates and choosing suitable sulfur sources for the sulfuration reaction, where suitable sulfur sources and solvent played crucial roles in the formation of well-defined CuS nanotubes. The results demonstrated that suitable sulfur sources such as thiourea and thiacetamide which release ionic sulfur rather than molecular sulfur at their decomposition temperature are favorable for the formation of CuS nanotubes, in contrast to sulfur powders. Further treatment of the product at higher temperature (140 degrees C) can improve the crystallinity but results in a slight shrinking of the nanotubes toward the inner side. In addition, the similar reaction in water media cannot produce such nanotubes. The shape evolution process and the formation mechanism of CuS nanotubes as well as the thermal stability of these nanotubes were studied.

Abstract:Uniform CuInS2 porous microspheres were synthesized on a large scale using CuCl2·2H2O, InCl3·4H2O and KSCN as starting reagents in ethylene glycol at 200 °C for 12 h. XRD result reveals that the obtained products are well crystallized. FESEM observation reveals that the prepared microspheres are composed of sheet-like nanocrystals. The possible formation mechanism was simply discussed.

Abstract:An acetic acid-assisted solution reaction at 80 °C has been developed to synthesize complex CuS microtubes with a diameter about 800 nm and length up to 16 μm, which were constructed by hexagonal copper sulfide nanoflakes. The formation process of complex microtube-like structures suggested that one-dimensional microrods of the initial precursor [Cu−(TAA)2]Cl2 complex acted as sacrificial templates for the self-aggregation and oriented growth of CuS nanoflakes on their backbones.

Abstract:CuS microcrystals were successfully prepared through a mild solvothermal reaction in ethylene glycol (EG) with the assistance of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). An interesting morphology evolution from flower-like microspheres to hollow microspheres, and finally to smooth nanoflakes was observed when increasing the amount of CTAB. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UVevis spectroscopy. It was found that the amount of CTAB played an important role in determining the morphology of the CuS microcrystals. Electrical measurement reveals that the as - prepared CuS microspheres were of high conductivity, which might favor their device applications. It is expected that CuS microcrystals with controlled morphologies and structures will have important applications in solar cells. This simple but effective method could also be extended to the controlled growth of other inorganic microcrystals.

Abstract:Mesoscale octaantimony decaoxide dihydroxide iodide (Sb8O10(OH)2I2) tubular crystals have been successfully synthesized for the first time through a hydrothermal route from Sb2S3, NaI and NaOH at 200°C. In the process, the Sb2S3 prismatic crystals serve as templates and play an important role in the formation of the Sb8O10(OH)2I2 tubular crystals in alkali aqueous solution. The products are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The sample has tubular prismatic structure. A typical tubule is 6–8mm in length, 30–50μm in diameter, and 5μm in thickness.
