A Comparison between Methods of Assessing Utility Values in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract:Objective:To assess the utility values of rheumatoid arthritis(RA) and compare the results obtained by different methods.Methods:We used direct methods including rating scale(RS),standard gamble(SG),time trade-off(TTO) and indirect method including EQ-5D to measure utilities in 92 RA patients.70 non-RA individuals estimated their utilities also by direct methods RS,SG and TTO but under hypothetical RA states.Results:The utility values obtained by the methods of RS,SG,TTO and EQ-5D among RA patients were 0.59±0.18,0.70±0.21,0.70±0.21 and 0.56±0.30.The RS,EQ-5D scores were lower than the SG,TTO scores and there were significant difference between the RS or EQ-5D and SG or TTO(P=0.002,P<0.001).The utility values obtained by the methods of RS,SG and TTO among non-RA individuals were 0.50±0.18,0.65±0.23 and 0.74±0.20.The RS score was lower than the SG,TTO scores and there was significant difference between the RS and SG or TTO(P<0.001).The non-RA individuals' RS scores were lower than the RA patients'(P=0.003).Conclusion:There was difference between the utility value of RA obtained by different methods and different people.The values obtained by EQ-5D and RS were lower,but the utilities obtained by SG and TTO in RA patients and non-RA individuals were similar.
