Abstract:Zeolite, for its high specific surface area, powerful absorption capacity and good exchange prosperities has been widely applied to environmental protection industry and feed industry. The study and application situation of zeolite in purifying aquaculture water body and wastewater treatments were reviewed in this paper. The prospects of the researching and development of zeolite as molecular sieve to culture predominant beneficial bacteria group to improve the sediment property were put forward. Existent problems and further development directions were also pointed out.

Abstract:The generation of solids by aquaculture activities has led to many problems in animal welfare, environmental quality, water treatment effects and public health, such as gill and intestinal damage, water eutrophication, system components blockages and antibiotics transfers through the food chain to human; thus, effective solid wastes management is very important. The purpose of this review is to summarize the sources, characterization methods, harmfulness, removal technologies and reutilization of solids in aquaculture water, including (i) different sources of solids, such as uneaten feed, feces and debris; (ii) solids characterization based on the general parameters, particle size distribution and chemical composition; (iii) the toxicity and detriment of solids to cultured species, the environment, aquaculture system components and human health; (iv) Solids removal, effluents solids thickening and source control techniques for better solids management; and (v) various methods for the reutilization of aquacultural solid wastes for resource value‐adding. In addition to these five specific objectives, the merits and drawbacks of each method or technology and future research priorities are discussed. The present review provides an understanding of the role played by solids in aquaculture water and provides guidance for aquacultural solid wastes precision management, aquaculture practices and technological developments. Thus, solids management can be carried out based on this guidance to improve animal welfare and the stability of water treatment systems, reduce harm to the environment and public health, and enable the development of aquaculture in a sustainable way.

Abstract:Heavy metals and organic pollutants could pose long-term threats to the ecosystem and human health, so it is urgent for us to find a friendly and efficient material to remove pollutants in environment. Since tourmaline is widely distributed in natural environment and has many excellent physical and chemical properties including radiating far infrared energy, permanently releasing negative ions, producing an electrostatic field, releasing rare microelements, and stimulating the growth and metabolism of microorganisms and plants, tourmaline had been conducted to alleviate environmental pollution. This review summarizes the application of tourmaline in aqueous solutions and soil polluted by heavy metals and organic pollutants, the factors that affect the removal of pollutants by tourmaline and the removal mechanisms. In addition, to ensure the safe use of tourmaline, this review also elaborates the environment risks of tourmaline through its toxicity indexes to soil and plant.

Abstract:Natural zeolites and composites containing zeolites, with their distinctive physicochemical properties, show great promise and have been applied across various industries, including agriculture, aquaculture, water and wastewater treatment, air purification, and petrochemicals. Recent years have witnessed significant advancements in the use of these inorganic adsorbents. The growing environmental concerns related to heavy metal contamination in water sources underscore the need for effective remediation strategies to protect ecosystems and human health. This review explores the diverse applications of natural zeolites and zeolite composites in the context of removing heavy metals from polluted water. A special focus is also given to the structural attributes, composition, and effectiveness of zeolites and zeolite composites. The review delves into their extensive utilization, with insights into their adsorption capabilities and mechanisms influencing performance. In addition, the review highlights the potential significance of these materials in aquaculture systems, particularly their role in mitigating waterborne heavy metal contaminants and enhancing environmental sustainability. Abstract:Water pollution and eutrophication as a bottleneck became serious with the development of aquaculture.Zeolite enhanced activated sludge process as an enhanced,which can efficiently remove chemical oxygen demand(COD) and NH4-N,was applied in a pond of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus culturing for 100 d.It was found that the effluent quality was improved compared with that of the affluent.The fish increased from 30.34 g to 120.08 g of body weight with the average growth rate of 0.89 g/d and survival rate of 85.6%.

Abstract:Among all natural minerals, the natural clay mineral has been widely used for environmental pollution treatment both in water and soil, especially heavy metal (HM) pollution in recent years. In this review, modified methods for clay minerals and their application for the remediation of HM contaminated water and soil are summarized. The remediation mechanisms of HMs in water and in soil by modified clay minerals were discussed. Moreover, the existing problems and development of clay minerals are also discussed.

Abstract:The investigation of environmental property of mineral i.e. environmental mineralogy is a branch of science dealing with interactions between natural minerals and spheres of the Earth surface as well as reflection of global change, prevention of ecological destroy, remediation of environmental pollution and participation in biomineralogy. Natural minerals actually become information carriers of recording global changes. There is negative effect to human hearth and living environment by destroy and decomposition of minerals derived from human life and production activities. Meanwhile, environmental properties of preventable decomposition of minerals can be used to decrease or avoid the negative effect. It is a vivid intersect research on interaction of biomineralization, especially on mechanisms of the interaction at nano scale. Pollutant treatment by natural minerals is based on the law of nature and reflects natural self-purification function in the inorganic world, similar to that of the organic world- biological treatment. Mineralogical method and biological method are well matched in pollutants disposal and jointly constitute a natural system of self-purification in terms of pollution treatment and environmental remediation in the spheres of interaction between mankind and the earth surface. The purification function of natural minerals for reducing pollutants is reflected mainly in the basic properties of environmental mineral materials. A series of case studies related to the natural self-purification, which were mostly completed by our group, are discussed in the paper. They are embodied by some natural minerals of pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, goethite, cryptomelane, rutile, vermiculite, montmorillonite and jarosite and so on to disposal contaminants of heavy metals of Cr, Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Co and Ni etc. or to degrade volatile organic compounds in water, air and soil. Further research should be to reveal the subtle process of interaction on the interface of contaminants and minerals on the atomic level, to make the law to deal with the defects of crystal structure dominating the surface adsorption of contaminants, to discuss the microporous effect of the crystals connected with filtrating contaminants and to establish the mechanism that the effect of mineral chemical activity can purify contaminants as well as to bring forward the theory to disposal heavy metal ions by the interaction between minerals and bacteria.

Abstract:Zeolite is a kind of aqueous silicoaluminate mineral with excellent adsorption function. In this paper, the crystal structure of zeolite, its characteristics of adsorption and ion exchange were described. The progress of research and application of zeolite in wastewater treatment, soil improvement and waste gas treatment at home and abroad in recent years were commented. Suggestions for the exploitation and application of the zeolite in multiple environments had been put forward. As a functional loading material, zeolite should be popularized in environmental pollution control.

Abstract:A series of case studies related to environmental mineralogical materials, which have mostly been accomplished by our group over the last ten years, are described in the paper. It is new to put forward the basic properties of purification function of environmental mineralogical materials, including surface adsorption, porous filtration, defects of crystal structure, ionic exchange, crystallography, dissolution, hydration, redox, semiconductor effect, nanomineralogy and mineralogical-biological interactions. The prospective investigation and utilization of environmental mineralogical materials have been dealt with in more detail. Cr(VI)-bearing wastewater can be treated by natural iron sulphides which are used as reductant to reduce Cr(VI) and as precipitant to precipitate Cr(III) simultaneously. The cryptomelane may be the real mineral of the active octahedral molecular sieve in nature to degrade phenol sewage and to decolorize dye. Natural rutile TiO_2 shows photocatalysis on degrading trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene. Expansion of vermiculite develops loose interior structures inside the briquette, and thus brings enough oxygen for combustion and sulphation reaction. Effective combustion of the original carbon reduces amounts of dust in the fly ash. Batch experiments were conducted using the CTMAB-Montmorillonite as sorbent to adsorb aromatic contaminants that are detected frequently in the leaching water from municipal waste deposits. The CTMAB modification proves very effective in enhancing the sorption capacity of the sorbent. Porous feldspar from tuff and granite can immobilize nuclides and therefore it can be used as natural barrier to prevent nuclide migration in the rocks that are wall rocks of nuclide waste landfill. Acid-eroded derivative of natural chrysotile is non-crystalline silicon dioxide shaped as nano-fibriform. The property of dimethylsilyl derivative of the non-crystalline silicon dioxide changes from hydrophile to hydrophobe. The colloid characteristics of jarosite can be used to insulate metal minerals from air and surface water to prevent contamination of acid mining drainage in metal ore mines. More emphasis is put on the research on the mineralogical photocatalysis in natural self-purification of inorganic minerals. The systematic research is very important to realize redox of organic contaminants, especially the permanent organic contaminants that cannot be degraded by themselves. The new advances are of significance in finding the natural self-purification in inorganic world and show that the mineralogical method (Natural Mineralogical Technology, NMT) for pollution treatment and environmental remediation, can act as the fourth category of pollution treatment methods following the physical, chemical and especially biological methods.

Abstract:Mycotoxins, bacteria, heavy metals and other toxic contaminants in feed have adverse effects on the health of animal. The decontamination of feed to reduce the content of harmful substances before feeding is inevitably needed. Clay minerals are a promising effective feed additive due to their cost-effectiveness and nearly without side effects. Montmorillonite (Mt) has high adsorption for mycotoxins, bacteria, heavy metals in animal feed and body. This review made a comprehensive and critical review of how Mt as an ingredient in animal feed functions. It covers the recent understanding of removing mycotoxins, bacteria and heavy metals onto Mt and the relevant influences of Mt on animal intestinal health, growth performance and product quality. Mt as feed additive can remove mycotoxins and bacteria in feed and gastrointestinal tract of the animal by surface adsorption, electrostatic adsorption and intermolecular force. In addition, Mt can adsorb heavy metals effectively in feed by the exchangeability of interlayer cations and by the swellability due to cation hydration. Modification of Mt by metal ions, metal oxides, and organic cations can improve the adsorption efficiency of mycotoxins, bacteria, heavy metals in vitro and in vivo. Mt and its modified products as feed additive can remarkably enhance the intestinal health and growth performance of livestock, aquatic and poultry. Utilization of Mt as feed additive can effectively improve the quality of milk, egg and meat.

Abstract:In recent decades, natural mineral materials (NMMs) and NMMs-based materials as the emerging catalysts for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have progressively become a rising field of environmental research. Compared with chemically synthesized catalysts, NMMs are inexpensive and abundant, which makes them suitable to realize large-scale applications in practical production. This critical review classifies NMMs into five categories including Fe-based materials, Cu-based materials, Ti-based materials, other common metal materials and silicate mineral materials, whose crystallographic characteristics and applications in the field of AOPs for wastewater purification are systemically summarized. In addition, the catalytic degradation performance, catalytic mechanism and reusability of NMMs or NMMs-based materials are also briefly reviewed. We anticipate this review would highlight the strategy of using low-cost and abundant mineral resources as green materials for wastewater decontamination, and therefore broaden the application perspectives and values of NMMs.

Abstract:Heavy metals released into the environment could accumulate in living organisms, thus causing various diseases and disorders. Diatomite, an eco-environmental functional material, has been proved to be a very promising and effective adsorbent in heavy metal-contaminated water treatment because of its high porosity, low density, high specific surface area, and surface silanol groups. This review (i) describes the characteristics, advantages, and limitations of diatomite; (ii) presents the capability of heavy metals adsorption onto diatomite-based functional materials; and (iii) discusses main adsorption mechanisms involved (ion-exchange, electrostatic interaction, chelation, and complexation) as well. Future studies about enhancing adsorption capacity and regeneration of diatomite-based functional materials are suggested.

Abstract:With rapid industrial development and population growth, the pollution of soil and groundwater has become a critical concern all over the world. Yet, remediation of contaminated soil and water remains a major challenge. In recent years, apatite has gained a surging interest in environmental remediation because of its high treatment efficiency, low cost, and environmental benignity. This review summarizes recent advances in: (1) natural apatite of phosphate ores and biological source; (2) synthesis of engineered apatite particles (including stabilized or surface-modified apatite nanoparticles); (3) treatment effectiveness of apatite towards various environmental pollutants in soil and groundwater, including heavy metals (e.g., Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Ni), inorganic anions (e.g., As oxyanions and F − ), radionuclides (e.g., thorium (Th), strontium (Sr), and uranium (U)), and organic pollutants (e.g., antibiotics, dyes, and pesticides); and (4) the removal and/or interaction mechanisms of apatite towards the different contaminants. Lastly, the knowledge or technology gaps are identified and future research needs are proposed.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has a serious negative impact on the ecological environment and human health due to its toxicity, persistence, and non-biodegradable properties. Among the technologies applied in heavy metals removal, adsorption has been widely used as the most promising method because of its simple operation, high removal efficiency, strong applicability, and low cost. Iron-manganese oxide nanomaterials, as an effective absorbent, have attracted wide attention due to their simple preparation, wide material sources, and lower ecological impact. So far, no quantitative investigation has been conducted on the preparation and application of iron-manganese oxide nanomaterials in heavy metals removal. This review discussed the preparation methods and characteristics of iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials over the past decade and provided some basic information for the improvement of preparation methods. The physicochemical properties of iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials and environmental conditions are regarded as important factors that affect the removal efficiency of heavy metals. In addition, the removal mechanisms of heavy metals in aqueous solution with iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials were mainly included redox, complex precipitation, electrostatic attraction, and ion exchange. The reusability and practicability in actual wastewater treatment of 3nganese oxide nanomaterials were further discussed. Several key problems still need to be solved in the existing progress, such as improving the ability and stability of the iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials to remove heavy metals from actual wastewater. In conclusion, this review provides a future direction for the application of iron‑manganese oxide nanomaterials for heavy metals removal and even in the large-scale treatment of actual wastewater.

Purification Effect of the Aquaculture Wastewater and Sediment by Microbial Nanospheres with Different Material Ratios and Dosing Methods

Abstract:Nanospheres were prepared by different materials of nano-bamboo charcoal powder, zeolite powder, and aquaculture pond sediment in different ratios. It was then fermented with effective microorganisms (EM) active calcium liquid to synthesize the bioactive microbial nanospheres. These nanospheres were used to compare the purification effect of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) pollutants in aquaculture wastewater. The indoor simulation experiment was also conducted to compare the different dosage methods (one-time dosing without aeration, multiple dosing without aeration, and multiple dosing with aeration) of microbial nanospheres on the removal of organic matter (OM) and effect of the biodegradability (G value) in aquaculture sediment. The results obtained indicated that the purification effect was most remarkable when the mass ratio of nano-bamboo charcoal powder: zeolite powder: pond sediment was 10%: 15%: 75%, in which the maximum removal rate of NH4+-N, TN, and TP reached up to 84.86%, 52.15%, and 50.35%, respectively. Under the same microbial nanospheres amount, the effect of one-time addition on the removing of OM in sediment was not as effective as that of multiple dosing. After the 20th day, the removal rate of OM reached 25.99% in multiple dosing treatment and it was 35.58% higher than one-time dosing treatment. The OM content in sediment was reduced by 32.38% under the multiple dosing with aeration treatment. Multiple dosing of microbial nanospheres with aeration increased the G value of sediment about 337.0%. In situ experiment further indicated that the microbial nanospheres dosage with aeration had a good sediment bio-remediation effect, which is applicable to solve the problem of endogenous pollution in aquaculture ponds.

Abstract:With the fast development of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, environmental nanotechnology has attracted increasing concerns in the past decades. In the field of water treatment, nanotechnology exhibited great potential in improving the performance and efficiency of water decontamination as well as providing a sustainable approach to secure water supply. In this review, the current applications of nanomaterials in water and wastewater treatment were briefly discussed. The synthesis and physiochemical properties of diverse free nanomaterials, including carbon based nanomaterial, metal and metal oxides nanoparticles as well as noble metal nanoparticles, were focused on, and their performance and mechanisms towards removal of various contaminants were discussed. When concerning the large-scale application in water treatment, nanoparticles have to face some inherent technical bottlenecks such as aggregation, difficult separation, leakage into the contact water, as well as potential adverse effect imposed on ecosystem and human health. The emerging nanocomposite materials integrate the merits of functional nanoparticles and varying solid hosts of large size, and exhibit great advantages in scaled-up application. This review particularly covered the topic of environmental nanocomposites, such as those of organic and inorganic supports, nanocomposite membranes and magnetic nanocomposites. The advantages and perspectives of various nanocomposites are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The formation of minerals such as calcite and struvite through the hydrolysis of urea catalyzed by ureolytic bacteria is a simple and easy way to control mechanisms, which has been extensively explored with promising applications in various areas such as the improvement of cement and sandy materials. This review presents the detailed mechanism of the biominerals production by ureolytic bacteria and its applications to the wastewater, groundwater and seawater treatment. In addition, an interesting application is the use of these ureolytic bacteria in the removal of heavy metals and rare earths from groundwater, the removal of calcium and recovery of phosphate from wastewater, and its potential use as a tool for partial biodesalination of seawater and saline aquifers. Finally, we discuss the benefits of using biomineralization processes in water treatment as well as the challenges to be solved in order to reach a successful commercialization of this technology.
