Abstract:The problem of stability analysis for a class of switched linear systems is studied in this paper based on the theory of matrix measure. The matrix measures of all subsystems are used to determine the stability of the switched linear systems. Based on this, sufficient conditions are reached, which can be used to determine the stability or instability of switched linear systems under arbitrary switching law. If a switching sequence satisfies some conditions, a theorem in this paper can be used to verify if it can stabilize the systems. The obtained conditions are simpler than the reported methods such as multi-Lyapunov functions and hence are easier to check. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate these conditions.

Recently, for two linear systems, Lou and Si gave a condition not only necessary but also sufficient to the distinguishability of linear systems. However, the condition is not easy enough to verify. Abstract:The problem of stability analysis for switched linear systems is studied based on the properties of the quadratic form. With the introduction of energy velocity matrix and negative definite space, sufficient conditions for asymptotical stability, instability under arbitrary switching sequence and asymptotical stability under special switching sequence are reached which can be applied to study some types of switched linear systems. These conditions can be applied not only to study the problem of stability analysis for switched linear systems, but also to design the stable switching sequence for a switched linear system. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methods.

On Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for Identifiability and Identification of Switching Dynamical Networks

Abstract:We consider the identifiability and identification problem of a dynamical network modeled by a switched linear dynamical system governed by a sequence of switchings. We aim at exactly reconstructing the network sequence along with the switching signal from the state trajectories of all nodes. The identification of a switching dynamical network is more challenging than that of a time-invariant dynamical network in that the data is generated by a number of different subsystems at different periods. By observability conditions, we first establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the identifiability of switching dynamical networks. Building on this, a sufficient identification condition is developed leveraging coupled Lyapunov-transpose matrix equations, which allows us to design a new algorithm that can exactly recover the whole network sequence, even if the switching signal is completely unknown a prior. Finally, a numerical example is provided to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:We study the controllability of switched linear systems. First, the concept of controllable state set is introduced as the basic tool for evaluating the controllability. We then prove that, for a switched linear system, there exists a basic switching sequence such that the controllable state set of this basic switching sequence is equal to the controllable state set of the system. Hence, the controllability can be realized by using only one switching sequence. This striking fact reveals some intrinsic properties of switched linear systems, and is the most fundamental starting point for further development. Based on this fact, a necessary and sufficient condition for controllability of switched linear systems is established. Furthermore, these results are extended to switched linear systems with time-delay. A geometric criterion for controllability of switched time-delay systems is established as well. Illustrative examples are provided.

Abstract:In this paper, the hybrid controllability and mode controllability of switched linear systems are investigated. It is proved that, for switched linear systems, the hybrid controllability is equivalent to the state controllability. Based on this fact, a sufficient and necessary condition for hybrid controllability of switched linear systems is established. Furthermore, the results are extended to switch linear systems with time-delay in control. Two examples are provided to illustrate our results.

Abstract:Many practical systems in physics, biology, engineering, and information science exhibit impulsive dynamical behaviors due to abrupt changes at certain instants during the dynamical processes. This note first introduces the impulsive behavior into switched linear systems and studies the controllability and observability of such systems. Necessary and sufficient criteria for reachability and controllability are established. It is proved that reachability is equivalent to controllability for such systems. Then, necessary and sufficient criteria for observability and determinability of such systems are established by duality. It is also proved that observability is equivalent to determinability. Our criteria are of geometric type, they can be transformed into algebraic form conveniently. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the utility of our criteria.
New Results On Controllability, Observability And Stabilization Of Switched Linear Systems

Abstract:A switched linear system is said to be controllable, if for any given initial state and terminal state, one call find a switching sequence and corresponding input such that the system call be driven from the initial state to the terminal state. Necessary and sufficient condition oil the controllability of switched linear systems has been established, and a single switching sequence call be constructed to realize the controllability. In this paper, the stabilizability problem for switched linear systems is formulated and we show that controllability implies stabilizability for switched linear systems. In our framework, we employ periodically switching signal and piecewise constant feedback controller. Two stabilization design methods, the pole assignment method and the linear matrix inequality method are proposed. Furthermore, if a switched linear system is both controllable and observable, ail observer-based Output feedback controller can be constructed when the system state is not available. In this case, the well-known Separation Principle is shown to still hold. All these results are built upon our previously established fundamental geometric properties of controllability realization as well as the important fact that both controllability and observability call be realized through a single switching sequence.

Abstract:The observability of nonlinear systems was considered in this note. First, we reviewed the definitions and relations of observable, locally observable, weakly observable, locally weakly observable, uniformly locally weakly observable and completely uniformly locally weakly observable. Then, a sufficient condition under which a multi-output nonlinear system is completely uniformly locally weakly observable was given. The sufficient condition becomes necessary and sufficient condition when the system is single-output. We also gave a canonical form of these multi-output systems. In the end, an example illustrated how to use the given sufficient conditions to determine whether a nonlinear system is completely uniformly locally weakly observable.

Abstract:Detectability plays an important role in the analysis of control engineering systems. This paper proposes two novel detectability conditions: weak detectability and L-2 detectability under the framework of the signal set. These conditions are generalizations of well-known concepts such as detectability and weakly zero-state detectability and they can be applied to large classes of systems or signals characterized by signal sets. Other than introducing these two detectability conditions, the contribution of this paper is three-fold. First of all, the relationships between these two detectability conditions are discussed. Secondly, several essential and important characterizations are explored. Lastly, these detectability conditions are further simplified and used in verifying uniform global asymptotic stability for switched systems. A simple example shows the effectiveness of the proposed results.

Abstract:In this paper, several different concepts of controllability are investigated for a class of linear singular systems which system parameters are piecewise constant. Necessary and sufficient geometric criteria for C-controllability and R-controllability of such systems are established, respectively. These conditions can be easily transformed into algebraic form. By applying the principle of duality, C-observability is discussed as well. Furthermore, the intrinsic relationship between these results and existing results are also discussed. Then, a novel necessary, and sufficient criterion for C-controllability of linear time-invariant singular systems is derived as a byproduct.

Necessary and sufficient criteria for reachability and controllability are established, respectively. Abstract:Reachability and controllability of positive discrete-time switched linear systems are firstly studied in this paper. First, a theoretic equivalent condition for reachability is addressed. A sufficient condition is also presented, but a counterexample shows that it is not necessary. A verifiable equivalent condition is given for a class of systems. Next, we show that reachability and null controllability is equivalent to complete controllability. A equivalent condition for null controllability is addressed and a verifiable one is given for a class of systems.

Abstract:This paper considers controllability and observability of switched multi-agent systems, which are composed of continuous-time and discrete-time subsystems. First, a controllability criterion is established in terms of the system matrices. Then, by virtue of the concepts of the invariant subspace and the controllable state set, a method is proposed to construct the switching sequence to ensure controllability of switched multi-agent systems, and a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for controllability. Moreover, a necessary controllability condition is derived in terms of eigenvectors of the Laplican matrix. With respect to observability, two necessary and sufficient algebraic conditions are obtained. Finally, simulation examples are provided to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:We study the solution theory of linear switched singular systems. In a recent paper by Anh et al. (2019), it was highlighted that the common assumption that each mode of the switched system is index-1 is not sufficient to guarantee existence and uniqueness of solutions of the corresponding switched system and the notion of “jointly index-1” was introduced. However, until now it was not clear what conditions are actually required to guarantee existence and uniqueness of solutions if the switching signal is not considered arbitrary. In particular, we study the two relevant situations where the mode sequence is fixed (and the switching times are arbitrary) and where the whole switching signal is fixed. In both cases, we provide conditions in terms of the original system matrices which ensure existence and uniqueness of solutions. We also extend the idea of the one-step map introduced by Anh et al. (2019) to these two cases. It turns out that in the case of a fixed switching signal, the index-1 condition for the individual modes is also not necessary (in addition to not being sufficient). Furthermore, we utilize the established solution theory to provide characterizations of observability and determinability of switched singular systems.
