Abstract:Vanadia-containing mesoporous SBA-15 catalysts were prepared and characterized for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane. It is demonstrated that the vanadia-supported SBA-15 catalysts exhibit a much higher catalytic activity than those reported in the literature obtained over vanadium-supported mesoporous MCM-41 catalysts in the ODH of propane. The high catalytic performance of the mesoporous SBA-15 catalysts is attributed to the particularly large pore diameters and low surface acidity.

Abstract:The state and reactivity of surface oxygen species of mesoporous silica-supported vanadium oxide catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane have been investigated by microreactor tests combined with in-situ electron spin resonance, temperature-programmed surface reaction, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The pore diameter of the SBA-15, MCM-41, and silica gel supports exert great influences on the dispersion state of VOx species and the catalytic properties of the supported vanadium oxide catalysts. The SBA-15-supported vanadium oxide catalyst has the highest selectivity for propylene because of its larger pore diameter and higher surface area. Surface lattice oxygen species of the VOx/SBA-15 catalyst are main active species for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propylene. Highly dispersed VOx species have high catalytic reactivity for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane. CO2 can regenerate the lattice oxygen species of supported vanadium oxide catalysts. The high propylene selectivity for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane by CO2 on supported vanadium oxide catalysts is related to weaker oxidizing effect of CO2, which inhibits the direct C3H8 oxidation and the consecutive oxidation of C3H6 to COx.
Vanadium Oxide Supported on Mesoporous SBA-15 As Highly Selective Catalysts in the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane

Abstract:The combination of different techniques (DR UV–vis, 51V NMR, UV-Raman, FTIR, and H2-TPR) in the characterization of vanadia supported on mesoporous SBA-15 catalysts shows that the dispersity and the nature of the vanadium species depend strongly on the V loading. In dehydrated catalysts with V contents lower than 2.8 wt%, vanadium is mainly in a tetrahedral environment. Higher V contents in the catalyst lead to the formation of polymeric V2O5-like species. Textural, SEM/TEM, and XRD results indicate that the ordered hexagonal mesoporous structure with large pore diameters of the support is retained upon the vanadium incorporation, and therefore high surface areas were obtained on the final catalysts. Vanadium species anchored to the surface show structural properties similar to those on mesoporous V-MCM and conventional VSiO2 catalysts, but a higher surface concentration of isolated or low polymeric VOx species could be achieved on the V-SBA samples. The number and nature of the acid sites also change with the vanadium loading. The superior performance of the present mesoporous SBA-15 catalysts in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane has been attributed to a higher dispersion of V species achieved on the SBA-15 support with large pore diameters as well as the low surface acidity of the catalyst.

Abstract:Mesoporous SBA-15(H2O2) material synthesized via a controlled H2O2-based detemplation at mild conditions has been employed as new type of support to load vanadia. The ordered mesostructure of the SBA-15 host is retained as indicated by XRD and nitrogen adsorption measurements, and the surface areas of the V-SBA-15(H2O2) materials are in the range of 464–667m2g−1 comparable to 772m2g−1 for the parent SBA-15(H2O2) material. The characterization results also indicate the presence of a high abundance of surface silanol groups inside the silica pores, which can allow controlled vanadia loading up to 4.5wt% or V coverage up to 1.01Vnm−2. In contrast to conventional calcination-derived SBA-15(C) sample the high population of the surface hydroxyl groups as well as high structural stability of the SBA-15(H2O2) material allowed a very good dispersion of the vanadia on its surface leading to high productivities of propylene during the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane.

Abstract:A series of vanadium containing mesocellular silica foams (MCF) featuring a well-defined three-dimensional (3D) mesoporosity with ultralarge mesopores were studied with regard to their performance in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane. Catalysts supported on two-dimensional hexagonally ordered siliceous SBA-15 and MCM-41, as well as conventional amorphous silica, were also examined. The dispersity and the nature of the vanadium oxide species were characterized by means of DRIFTS, Raman spectroscopy, DR UV–vis, and H2-TPR. Textural, SAXS, and TEM results indicate that the characteristic mesocellular structural features of MCFs are preserved after the vanadium incorporation. Spectroscopic measurements show that vanadium exists mainly in a tetrahedral environment in dehydrated V-MCF catalysts with V content <4.2 wt%, indicating that a very high surface concentration of isolated or low-polymeric VOx species could be achieved on the present V-MCF systems. The MCF-supported vanadia catalysts exhibit much higher propane conversion and propylene productivity than their conventional V-SBA, V-MCM, and V–SiO2 counterparts in the ODH of propane, demonstrating that apart from the active redox sites, internal molecular transport in mesopores of the catalyst also plays an important role in the gas-phase selective oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Boron-based metal-free catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) have drawn great attention in both academia and industry due to their impressive activity and olefin selectivity. Herein, the SiO2 and B2O3 sequentially coated honeycomb cordierite catalyst is designed by a two-step wash-coat method with different B2O3 loadings (0.1%–10%) and calcination temperatures (600, 700, 800 °C). SiO2 obtained by TEOS hydrolysis acts as a media layer to bridge the cordierite substrate and boron oxide via abundant SiOH groups. The well-developed straight channels of honeycomb cordierite make it possible to carry out the reactor under high gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) and the thin wash-coated B2O3 layer can effectively facilitate the pore diffusion on the catalyst. The prepared B2O3/SiO2@HC monolithic catalyst exhibits good catalytic performance at low boron oxide loading and achieves excellent propylene selectivity (86.0%), olefin selectivity (97.6%, propylene and ethylene) and negligible CO2 (0.1%) at 16.9% propane conversion under high GHSV of 345,600 ml·(g B2O3)−1·h−1, leading to a high propylene space time yield of 15.7 g C3H6·(g B2O3)−1·h−1 by suppressing the overoxidation. The obtained results strongly indicate that the boron-based monolithic catalyst can be properly fabricated to warrant the high activity and high throughput with its high gas/surface ratio and straight channels.

Abstract:The structural characteristics and the performance of vanadia catalysts supported on Silica-gel, SBA-15, MCM-41, fumed-SiO(2), Nano-SiO(2) in oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane have been investigated. Vanadia dispersion on supports and reactivities of the lattice oxygens have been studied using TG-DSC-MS of temperature-programmed surface reaction(TPSR) and in-situ ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS) techniques. It has been shown that the reactivities of supported vanadia catalysts for ODH of propane are mainly attributed to the high degree of vanadia dispersion, high dispersed isolated tetrahedred V(5+) species are the active sites for ODH of propane. The selectivities of C(3)H(6) are relative to the average pore diameter of catalysts, The small pore diameter causes the deep oxidation of C(3)H(6) easily. The bond strength between vadadium and the lattice oxygen on different silica supports influences on the selectivity of C(3)H(6). The weak lattice oxygens of V-O-Si are the combustion site, and the combustion temperature decreases with the reducing of the bond strength. However, the strong bound lattice oxygens of V=O and V-O-V are the site of the selective oxydehydrogenation of propane. The differences of shape and structure on silica supports give rise to the different activities and selectivities for ODH of propane over supported vanadia catalysts.
Synthesis of Novel Cage-Like Mesoporous Vanadosilicate and Its Efficient Performance for Oxidation Dehydrogenation of Propane

Abstract:Ordered vanadosilicate mesoporous material with large (similar to 15 nm), uniform, novel cage-like mesopores was synthesized under acidic aqueous conditions from tetraethyl orthosilicate in the presence of ammonia vanadiate, using P(123) with CTAB as cotemplate and TMB as a swelling agent. The catalysts were extensively characterized by a combination of different techniques (N(2) adsorption, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV Raman, and UV vis spectra) in relation to their performance for oxidation dehydrogenation of propane. SAXS and TEM analysis showed that the as-synthesized vanadosilicate samples have a uniform, well-defined cage-like mesostructure. UV Raman and UV vis spectra revealed that the vanadium species was isolated and presented as a highly dispersed state in the framework of the vanadosilicate samples. Significantly enhanced catalytic activity was observed for the vanadosilicate catalysts, as compared with the 1.0 V-SBA-15 prepared by conventional impregnation. The enhanced catalytic activity of the vanadosilicate catalyst was attributed to the beneficial presence of a larger amount of isolated and highly dispersed V-species, as well as the cage-like mesoporous structure.
Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane over Mg-V-O Oxides Supported on MgO-coated Silica: Structural Evolution and Catalytic Consequence

Abstract:Supported Mg-V-O oxides were prepared by co-impregnation of magnesium and vanadium citrates with MgOcoated mesoporous silica (SBA-15). Their structures were characterized by complementary techniques including powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance UV vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. These catalysts were examined in oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane to propylene, and the reaction kinetic parameters of k(1)/k(2) and kilki were analyzed, which represent the ratios of the rate constants for primary propane ODH (k(1)) to propane combustion (k(2)) and that for secondary propylene combustion (k(5)) to kb respectively. Characterization results show the structural evolution of the vanadium species from isolated VO4 monovanadates to Mg3V2O5 crystallites, without formation of crystalline V205, with increasing the vanadium content from 1.7 wt% to 25.6 wt%. Dispersed monovanadates exhibited higher propane ODH rates than Mg3V2O5 crystallites, in line with their higher reducibility probed by temperature-programed reduction in H2, but they were less selective to propylene due to the favorable propylene combustion over its formation, as reflected by the higher kilki ratios. The supported Mg3V2O5 crystallites with sizes of about 15-30 nm, relative to those of above 30 nm, were found to be intrinsically more selective for the propane ODH, consistent with their higher ki/k2 and lower kilki ratios. Consequently, they offered the superior selectivities and yields of propylene at higher propane conversions. Such understanding on the intrinsic catalytic properties of the Mg-V-O oxides and particularly Mg3V2O5 crystallites provides new insights into the structural requirement for the propane ODH reaction, beneficial to design of more efficient Mg-V-O-based catalysts for the production of propylene.

Abstract:Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) is a promising process for producing propene. Recently, some boron-based catalysts have exhibited excellent olefin selectivity in ODHP. However, their complex synthetic routes and poor stability under high-temperature reaction conditions have hindered their practical application. Herein, we report a self-evolution method rather than conventional assembly approaches to acquire structures with excellent stability under a high propane conversion, from a single precursor-MgB2. The catalyst feasibly prepared and optimized exhibited a striking performance: 60% propane con-version with a 43.2% olefin yield at 535 degrees C. The BOx corona pinned by the strong interaction with the borate enabled zero loss of the high conversion (around 40%) and olefins selectivity (above 80%) for over 100 h at 520 degrees C. This all-in-one strategy of deriving all the necessary components from just one raw chemical provides a new way to synthesize effective and economic catalysts for potential industrial implementation.

Abstract:The structure and catalytic properties based on Chromium Oxide supported on mesoporous SBA-15 for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane by CO2 have been studied by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS), electron spin resonance (ESR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and propane pulsing experiments in the absence of gas-phase O-2. It has been shown that propane conversion and propene yield increase with Cr loadings. The propane conversion and propene yield on CrOx, (Cr: 10wt%) /SBA-15 catalyst for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane by CO2 at 550 degrees C reach 24.8% and 21.8%, respectively.The results of ESR, UV-Vis DRS and propane pulsing experiments indicate that Cr-III in the CrOx/SBA-15 catalyst is the main active species in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane by CO2 and Cr-VI, Cr-V is inactive in dehydrogenation.

Abstract:The present study investigated the influence of silica support texture on the catalytic performance of VO x /silica catalysts in the selective oxidation of propane. Two- and three-dimensional mesoporous materials, SBA-15 and MCF, were synthesized using hydrothermal methods to create different pore structures. Vanadium (approximately 5 wt%) was incorporated into the silica matrices (MCF, SBA-15) and SiO 2 (used as a reference system) through impregnation. The surface composition, valence state, and reducibility of the VO x species accommodated in VO x /silica catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (H 2 -TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. The catalytic properties of the catalysts were evaluated in the propane selective oxidation conducted at 470 °C, utilizing a mixture of oxidants (N 2 O and O 2 ). Propane oxidation resulted in propane conversion of 34 %, propene selectivity of 49 %, and propene oxide selectivity of 20 %, corresponding to space–time yield of propene reaching 37 g C3H6 kg cat -1 ·h -1 and propene oxide equal to 20 g PO kg cat -1 h −1 The textural properties of the support materials noticeably influenced the stability of the catalysts. The vanadium catalysts supported on three-dimensional mesocellular silica foams (MCF) demonstrated superior activity, achieving turnover frequency (TOF) values of 9.0 × 10 −4 s −1 for propene and 6.67 × 10 −4 s −1 for propene oxide (PO). The unique three-dimensional ultra-large pores of the MCF material facilitated the generation of significant amounts of propene oxide, along with propene, while minimizing the formation of CO, CO 2 , and other oxygen-bearing by-products. Operando UV–vis studies supported by two-dimensional correlation analysis (2D COS) were employed to explain the diversity in the catalytic performance of VO x /silica catalysts. It has been found that the oligomeric vanadium species are the active sites in propane oxidative dehydrogenation, whereas the monomeric forms participate in propene oxide formation. Moreover, the reduction of V 5+ to V 4+ and even V 3+ was identified as a crucial step in the reaction. A reaction scheme has been proposed based on catalytic experiments and spectroscopic insights.

Synthesis of Ordered Mesoporous Molecular Sieve-Supported Cobalt Catalyst via Organometallic Complexation for Propane Non-Oxidative Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Co-based catalysts have shown great promise for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reactions due to their merits of environmental friendliness and low cost. In this study, ordered mesoporous molecular sieve-supported CoOx species (CoOx/Al-SBA-15 catalyst) were prepared by one-step organometallic complexation. The catalysts show worm-like morphology with regular straight-through mesoporous pores and high external specific surface area. These typical features can substantially enhance the dispersion of CoOx species and mass transfer of reactants and products. Compared with the conventional impregnation method, the 10CSOC (10 wt.% Co/Al-SBA-15 prepared by the organometallic complexation method) sample presents a smaller CoOx size and higher Co2+/Co3+ ratio. When applied to PDH reaction, the 10CSOC delivers higher propane conversion and propylene selectivity. Under the optimal conditions (625 °C and 4500 h-1), 10CSOC achieves high propane conversion (43%) and propylene selectivity (83%). This is attributed to the smaller and better dispersion of CoOx nanoparticles, more suitable acid properties, and higher content of Co2+ species. This work paves the way for the rational design of high-performance catalysts for industrially important reactions.

Abstract:Mesoporous VOx/SBA-15 catalysts with different V contents were evaluated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane and characterized by N2 adsorption, XRD, HRTEM, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, XPS, and EPR techniques. Abstract:The catalytic selectivity of supported catalysts can be tuned by the appropriate design of synthesis strategies and catalyst structures. We provide a persuasive strategy to turn manganese oxide from a combustion catalyst into a selective catalyst for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP). This success is achieved by anchoring amorphous manganese oxide with thin-layer morphology on a ceria support <i>via</i> constructing strong oxide–support interactions (SOSIs). Multiple structure and mechanism investigations demonstrate that the SOSI forms active interfacial oxygen sites for propane activation and oxygen-deficient manganese oxide to stabilize propene and hinder overoxidation under the ODHP conditions. These features boost the ODHP to exhibit simultaneously high activity and propene selectivity, outperforming the general manganese oxide catalysts and even the practically promising vanadium catalysts. Synthesis of V-SBA-15 Catalysts Employed for Selective Oxidation of Propane

Abstract:V-SBA-15 catalysts with different content of vanadium were prepared through a "pH-adjusting" co-synthesis method. The catalysts were characterized with XRD, Nz sorption, TEM, Raman, slV NMR, NHz-TPD, and Hz-TPR techniques and their catalytic activity in selective oxidation of propane was investigated. The results indicated that the V-SBA-15 catalysts exhibited the ordered hexagonal structure similar to SBA-15. For the low V-loading catalysts with high catalytic activity the vanadium species were highly dispersed and mainly 4-coordinated. With increase of the loading, the appearance of octahedral vanadium species was observed which accounted for the decrease of catalytic activity.
Preparation of SBA-15-Supported Β-Mg2v2o7 Catalysts and Their Properties in Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane

Abstract:β-Mg2V2O7 catalysts supported on MgO-modified SBA-15 with V surface density of 4.1-8.5 nm-2 were synthesized by impregnation of the support with a pre-prepared aqueous solution of ammonium metavanadate,citric acid,and magnesium nitrate.The structure and reducibility of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction,Raman spectroscopy,diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy,and temperature-programmed reduction in H2.For oxidative dehydrogenation(ODH) of propane,bulk β-Mg2V2O7 phase was much less active and selective than α-Mg2V2O7 although they have the same dimeric tetrahedral VO4 units connected by bridging V-O-V bonds.Compared to the bulk phase,the greater accessibility of V sites on the supported β-Mg2V2O7 catalysts led to an increase in not only the initial propane ODH rates by about 20 times but also the initial propene selectivity from 88.3 to 94.1%,as high as that for α-Mg2V2O7(94.6%) that has been considered as the most selective Mg-V-O phase for propane ODH reactions.The selectivity results are consistent with those reflected by the two kinetic parameters,k1/k2 and k3/k1,which represent the ratios of the rate constants for primary propane ODH(k1) to propane combustion(k2) and that for secondary propene combustion(k3) to k1.Such understanding on the intrinsic catalytic properties of the bulk and supported Mg2V2O7 catalyst provides useful information for design of new Mg-V-O-based catalysts,for example,dispersed α-Mg2V2O7 catalyst with high activity and selectivity for propane ODH reactions under mild conditions.
