Abstract:Objective To investigate the beneficial effects of whole-body low-magnitude high-frequency vibration (LMHFV) on endochondral bone formation during fracture healing. Methods Closed femoral shaft fracture was established in 72 SD rats. After 1,2 and 4 weeks of treatment, effects of vibration (35Hz,<0.3 g) on fracture healing were assessed through comparison with sham-treated controls. Histological character was monitored with type I and II collagens located immunochemically. Besides,mRNA expressions of type I and II collagens and several key growth factors were quantified. Results Augmented cartilage formation with increased type II collagen expression was observed after 1 week of vibration treatment. Afterward, type II collagen decreased more quickly, accompanied with a significant increase of type I collagen expression in treatment group. Besides, bone morphogenic protein-2,transforming growth factor-β1 and vascular endothelial growth factor was upregulated by vibration treatment at different time points. Conclusion LMHFV stimulates the formation of matrix collagens and growth factors there are closely related to endochondral bone formation, and hence promotes fracture healing.
