Abstract:Objective To study the visual areas of human cortex by functional MRI(fMRI) retinotopic mapping.Methods Six normal volunteers were examined with 1.5 T MRI scanner,and stimulated with the pattern of phase-encoded polar angle with clockwise or counterclockwise rotating wedges, and the pattern of eccentricity with concentric expanding or contracting rings.After the data preprocessing with realignment,register,the functional data with phase-encoded of visual cortex were analyzed with fourier transform to obtain phase delay of each voxel.Visual field sign(VFS)was calculated based on the coding information of eccentricity gradient and polar angle gradient.Visual field representations were determined by VFS.The visualizations were performed with 2-dimension and 3-dimensions methods.Results In all subjects,the visual areas of V1,V2,V3/VP,V3A/V4v and the higher visual areas of V7 and V8 were delineated clearly.The visual areas were distributed on the occipital cortex as topological frame.Conclusion The technique of functional MRI retinotopic mapping can measure the retinotopic organization of human visual cortex non-invasively and precisely.
[Retinotopic Representations of Human Visual Cortex Revealed by Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To establish a set of methodological standard of retinotopic mapping using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to discuss anatomical features of functionally delineated V1/V2 boundary based on retinotopic criteria.METHODS:Three adults aged 25-30 (1 male and 2 females), right-handed, without contraindications of MRI were studied. Visual acuity was 20/20 or corrected to 20/20. Visual stimuli subtended a field of view of approximately 12 degrees, consisted of high contrast, achromatic and drifting checkerboards. Two types of stimuli were used: the rotating wedge, either clockwise or counterclockwise, to map the polar angle and the annular ring, either contracting or expanding, to map eccentricity. MRI parameters: GE signa VH/i 3.0T scanner. Functional data: GRE-EPI sequence, 20 slices lay perpendicular to the calcarine sulcus, TR: 2 s, TE: 40 ms, FA: 90 degrees, Phase: 128, FOV: 19 cm, matrix: 64x64, slice: 3 mm, gap: 0, resolution: 2.9 mmx2.9 mmx3.0 mm. Anatomical data was obtained using 3D-SPGR sequence to acquire high resolution. Data was analyzed using AFNI. In order to avoid the disadvantages of restricted view due to highly convoluted occipital cortex, cortical surface was unfolded and then cut and flattened. Functional data was presented to this flattened surface and subsequently analyzed.RESULTS:By using the phase-encoded visual stimuli, retinotopic organizations were exactly revealed both in the eccentricity and polar angle dimensions. Eccentricity maps showed that foveal representation lay in the occipital poles and the representation appeared further anterior as eccentricity increased. Polar angle maps showed that early retinotopically organized areas had either a mirror or non-mirror image representation of visual field. Boundaries of different visual areas were manually delineated based on retinotopic criteria called visual field sign, and the functionally delineated V1/V2 boundary located on the crests of gyrus.CONCLUSIONS:Phase-encoded stimuli is validated to be an efficient way to reveal retinotopic representation of visual cortex, promising a solid foundation for the future research under pathological conditions. Anatomical features of functionally delineated V1/V2 boundary support the wiring optimization principle.

Abstract:In humans, visual information in the peripheral visual field is processed differently from such information in the central visual field. For example, peripheral vision prefers coarser information, while central vision prefers finer details. Recent advances in neuroimaging allowed us to non-invasively explore the neural substrates underlying the distinctiveness of peripheral and central vision. In the human visual cortex, there is a mosaic of orderly representations of the visual field, and this organization is called a visual field map. In this review, we summarize the various strands of research on visual field maps, which are crucial to understand human peripheral vision. We first describe the techniques that are used to measure visual field maps by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We then review several studies that have tried to locate human visual areas using these techniques. We focused particularly on the findings of retinotopic organization for “far” peripheral visual field and tried to find the cortical regions that are crucial for peripheral vision. Topological Receptive Field Model for Human Retinotopic Mapping

Abstract:The mapping between visual inputs on the retina and neuronal activations in the visual cortex, i.e., retinotopic map, is an essential topic in vision science and neuroscience. Human retinotopic maps can be revealed by analyzing the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal responses to designed visual stimuli in vivo. Neurophysiology studies summarized that visual areas are topological (i.e., nearby neurons have receptive fields at nearby locations in the image). However, conventional fMRI-based analyses frequently generate non-topological results because they process fMRI signals on a voxel-wise basis, without considering the neighbor relations on the surface. Here we propose a topological receptive field (tRF) model which imposes the topological condition when decoding retinotopic fMRI signals. More specifically, we parametrized the cortical surface to a unit disk, characterized the topological condition by tRF, and employed an efficient scheme to solve the tRF model. We tested our framework on both synthetic and human fMRI data. Experimental results showed that the tRF model could remove the topological violations, improve model explaining power, and generate biologically plausible retinotopic maps. The proposed framework is general and can be applied to other sensory maps.

Abstract:Recent advances on functional magnetic resonance technology have greatly broadened its application in many disciplines including ophthalmic research area. Functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI), which combines the anatomical and functional features of the neural system, is a non-invasive,objective and orienting method. Among so many sub-methods, blood oxygenation level dependent MRI reflects the neural activities of visual cortex; diffusion tensor imaging traces nerve fibers; gadolinium enhanced MRI could access blood-ocular barrier function; manganese enhanced MRI reveals axoplasmic transport and retinotopic projection to sub-cortical nucleus; blood volume MRI could evaluate lamina-specific hemodynamics of ocular wall; while magnetic resonance spectroscopy investigates the molecular metabolism in nerve system. Glaucoma may damage the whole visual pathway, and fMRI would helps us estimate the in vivo fiber integrity and visual functional status quo in glaucoma patients. Here we first review the basic principles of several fMRI techniques and then discuss the applications in research related to glaucoma.

Abstract:Retinotopic mapping is a key property of organization in the human occipital cortex. The retinotopic organization of the central visual field of visual areas V1, V2, and V3 has been well established. We used fMRI to measure the retinotopic map of the peripheral visual field (eccentricity up to 60°). We estimated the sizes of the visual areas between 0° and 60° and obtained results consistent with anatomical studies. We also estimated the cortical distances and magnification factors for reconstruction of the retinotopic map using the peripheral wedge dipole model. By comparing the retinotopic map with the flattened surface, we analyzed the datasets used to reconstruct the map. We found that: (1) the percentage of the striate cortex devoted to peripheral vision in humans is significantly larger than that in the macaque, (2) the estimate of the scaling factor in linear magnification is larger than that found in previous studies focusing on central vision, and (3) the estimate of the peripheral factor in the dipolar model is too large to make the curve direction of the dipolar map in the periphery equivalent to that in the center. On the basis of our results, we revised the dipolar map to fit our conditions. The revised map in humans has a similar elliptical shape to that of macaques, and the central parts of the two species are the same. The different parts of the map are the peripheral regions, for which the peripheral wedge dipole model in humans is reversed compared to that of macaques.
Retinotopy Mapping for Face Stimuli and Attention in the Fusiform Face Area

Abstract:Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been used for over a decade to study early cortical retinotopic maps in the peripheral visual areas in the human brain. However, few data were about the higher visual area, especially the object selected activation area. Novel mapping stimuli composed of face figures were used to study the extent and layout of multiple retinotopic regions in the fusiform face area and to examine the independent manipulation of retinotopic responses by stimuli of face and by attention of face. In the face defining task, a region of the fusiform face area (FFA) was exhibited face activated. Similar as the in the peripheral visual areas, FFA aslo had retinotopic esponsive to face stimuli and attention. The present results show that the attention+stimuli task, stimuli task, and attention task, the FFA has significant activities for the both left and right filed face wedge. The FFA both also had a phase change along the Fusiform gyrus, especial in the attention+stimuli task, stimuli task. This result reflected the topographic character derived by attention and stimuli. Moreover, the perception is modulated by attention.

Abstract:Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we have researched the variation in response magnitude, in each visual areas (V1-V3), as a function of visual retintotopic areas (V1-V3) and temporal frequency (TF). Each visual area was identified in each subject using a combination of retinotopic mapping IMRI and cortical flattening techniques. A checkerboard was used as the stimulus in the study in which we TF was 2, 4, 8, 16Hz. It was hypothesized the peripheral stimulation would lead to faster onset latencies, as well as preferentially activae doral stream visual areas relative to central field stimulation. For the experiment we constructed fIVIRI amplitude tuning curves, averaged across subjects, for each visual area. The tuning curves that resulted are consistent with the known physiological properties of cells in the corresponding macaque visual areas, previous functional imaging studies, and in the case of V1, the psychophysically determined contrast sensitivity functions for temporal frequency. And retinotopic mapping is a key property of organization of human occipital cortex. The retinotopic organization of the central visual field of visual areas V1/V2/V3 has been well estimated. We also used functional magnetic resonance Imaging (fMR1) to measure the retinotopic mapping of the peripheral visual field (eccentricity up to 60deg). We estimate the locations of the visual areas in 0 similar to 60deg and the result is coincident with the anatomical studies. Visual areas V1, V2, V3 showed more direction sensitivity at low temporal frequencies in the central visual area, while there was the same signal change in the peripheral visual areas.

Abstract:In this review focusing primarily on the work conducted in my group at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, I will first briefly summarize what we have achieved in mapping columnar organizations in human primary visual cortex using blood oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), including ocular dominance columns, temporal frequency dependent domains, and orientation selective columns. I will then touch upon a couple of recent successful attempts in the field in mapping functional architectures in human extrastriate cortices, including human middle temporal complex and secondary and tertiary visual areas (V2 and V3), and discuss what we have learned regarding the spatial specificity of BOLD fMRI. Finally, I will offer some of my personal thoughts on how functional architectures may be organized in relation to underlying microvasculature and how such functional architectures may be experimentally explored.

Abstract:Optical imaging based on intrinsic signals is a newly emerged technique to detect the functional signals in the brain.Since it has no toxic effect and could provide a high spatial resolution it has been widely used in the functional architecture study of the visual,auditory and somatosensory cortex.In this paper,we introduced the recent progress on the vision research using this technique,and compared it with other brain functional imaging technique and single unit recording.We established the first optical imaging system in China.Using this system,the orientation map has been successfully recorded in the primary visual cortex in the cat at different depths,By now,a lot of work has been done with the system recently.

Abstract:Purpose: To develop and validate the functionality of a novel wide-view visual presentation system with a horizontal and vertical eccentricity angle of 60 degrees for retinotopic mapping by functional MRI (fMRI). Materials and Methods: The wide-view presentation system consisted of a 52-mm diameter optical fiber, an entrance apparatus and a presentation apparatus. The terminal edge of the optical fiber at the entrance is fiat, while the terminal edge on the presentation apparatus is a sphere of 60 mm in diameter. The subjects wore contact lenses with +20, +22, or +25 magnification to focus on the stimulus, and the visual field eccentricity angle could reach 60 degrees. The signal to noise ratio valuation experiment was performed to evaluate the clarity and quality of the MRI picture image. Checkerboard and random dot stimuli were used to prove that this system could be applied to retinotopic mapping by fMRI. Results: The results of the experiment demonstrated that the system is safe in the MRI environment with minimal distortion and can be used for visual retinotopic mapping studies. Wide-field mapping areas (V6, MST) were found in the human visual cortex. Compared with previous studies, the VI and MT+ surface area approaches but does not fully cover the anatomical area. Nonetheless, the area achieved using the new system is larger than those achievable in previous fMRI studies. Conclusion: We developed a versatile, low-cost system for presenting wide-view visual stimuli in the MRI environment. The fMRI retinotopic mapping results proved the viability of this system.

Abstract:Visual field defects (VFDs) represent a prevalent complication stemming from neurological and ophthalmic conditions. A range of factors, including tumors, brain surgery, glaucoma, and other disorders, can induce varying degrees of VFDs, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Over recent decades, functional imaging has emerged as a pivotal field, employing imaging technology to illustrate functional changes within tissues and organs. As functional imaging continues to advance, its integration into various clinical aspects of VFDs has substantially enhanced the diagnostic, therapeutic, and management capabilities of healthcare professionals. Notably, prominent imaging techniques such as DTI, OCT, and MRI have garnered widespread adoption, yet they possess unique applications and considerations. Abstract:Introduction: The wide-field visual cortex, known as MT+/V5 and V6 plays a major role in the visual processing of motion in the brain. In the current study, we located the MT+/V5 complex, which was divided into three sub-regions: the middle temporal (MT) area for central stimuli and the medial superior temporal (MST) area and V6 for peripheral stimuli. Previous studies of these areas were typically limited to the central (eccentricity is from 8° to 30°) visual fields. Methods: Using a wide-view presentation system, we presented a horizontal and vertical visual angle up to 120° in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) environment. Result: Our results suggest that the MT+ area is significantly larger than indicated by previous studies on wide-field stimuli. The MST and V6 areas responded strongly to peripheral stimulation, and the MST responded strongly to ipsilateral stimulation, while MST also responded to central stimulation. Conclusion: Furthermore, we also used retinotopic mapping with stimuli consisting of motion dots to localize the MT+ and the wide-field motion area V6. The retinotopic maps divided the composition of the visual field maps into four segments within a functionally subdivided MT+. Abstract:Visual search is ubiquitous in daily life and has attracted substantial research interest over the past decades. Although accumulating evidence has suggested complex neurocognitive processes underlying visual search, the neural communication across the brain regions remains poorly understood. The present work aimed to fill this gap by investigating functional networks of fixation-related potential (FRP) during the visual search task. Multi-frequency electroencephalogram (EEG) networks were constructed from 70 university students (male/female = 35/35) using FRPs time-locked to target and non-target fixation onsets, which were determined by concurrent eye-tracking data. Then graph theoretical analysis (GTA) and a data-driven classification framework were employed to quantitatively reveal the divergent reorganization between target and non-target FRPs. We found distinct network architectures between target and non-target mainly in the delta and theta bands. More importantly, we achieved a classification accuracy of 92.74% for target and non-target discrimination using both global and nodal network features. In line with the results of GTA, we found that the integration corresponding to target and non-target FRPs significantly differed, while the nodal features contributing most to classification performance primarily resided in the occipital and parietal-temporal areas. Interestingly, we revealed that females exhibited significantly higher local efficiency in delta band when focusing on the search task. In summary, these results provide some of the first quantitative insights into the underlying brain interaction patterns during the visual search process.
