Abstract:Blood-oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is an important tool for localizing brain functions in vivo. However, the ability of BOLD fMRI to map cortical columnar structures is highly controversial, as the ultimate functional specificity of BOLD remains unknown. Here we report a biphasic BOLD response to visual stimulation in the primary visual cortex of cats. In functional imaging, the initial BOLD signal decrease accurately labeled individual iso-orientation columns. In contrast, the delayed positive BOLD changes indicated the pattern of overall activation in the visual cortex, but were less suited to discriminate active from inactive columns.
Chondrolysis of the hip complicating slipped capital femoral epiphysis: long-term follow-up of nine patients.

Abstract:Nine patients with chondrolysis secondary to slipped capital femoral epiphysis of the hip were followed up from a minimum of 7 to a maximum of 19 years (average, 13.7 years) after the onset of the disease. The degree of slipping of the proximal epiphysis of the femur was severe in five patients and moderately severe in four patients. The nine patients were treated with non-weight bearing, antiinflammatory drugs, and physical therapy. The disease had a good resolution, with gradual regression of pain, and radiographs showed restoration of the joint space in an average of 10 months. At follow-up, mild coxalgia after prolonged activity was present in five patients, whereas in the one patient with concomitant avascular necrosis, pain was much more intense. All patients had some limitation of range of motion of the hip. It was most restricted in two patients, one with associated avascular necrosis and one with a severe slip. In all patients, radiographs showed restoration of the joint space. In the group with severe degrees of slipping, there were marginal osteophytes of the femoral head and the acetabulum. Significant arthrosis was present in the patient treated conservatively and in the patient with associated ischemic necrosis. In this long-term study of chondrolysis secondary to slipped capital femoral epiphysis, the overall prognosis was benign and was determined by the degree of slipping of the proximal epiphysis of the femur and concomitant aseptic necrosis. However, the authors believe that the patients with radiographic signs of degenerative joint disease may have a poor long-term prognosis.
The Benefits and Detriments of Macrophages/Microglia in Models of Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract:The central nervous system (CNS) is immune privileged with access to leukocytes being limited. In several neurological diseases, however, infiltration of immune cells from the periphery into the CNS is largely observed and accounts for the increased representation of macrophages within the CNS. In addition to extensive leukocyte infiltration, the activation of microglia is frequently observed. The functions of activated macrophages/microglia within the CNS are complex. In three animal models of multiple sclerosis (MS), namely, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and cuprizone- and lysolecithin-induced demyelination, there have been many reported detrimental roles associated with the involvement of macrophages and microglia. Such detriments include toxicity to neurons and oligodendrocyte precursor cells, release of proteases, release of inflammatory cytokines and free radicals, and recruitment and reactivation of T lymphocytes in the CNS. Many studies, however, have also reported beneficial roles of macrophages/microglia, including axon regenerative roles, assistance in promoting remyelination, clearance of inhibitory myelin debris, and the release of neurotrophic factors. This review will discuss the evidence supporting the detrimental and beneficial aspects of macrophages/microglia in models of MS, provide a discussion of the mechanisms underlying the dichotomous roles, and describe a few therapies in clinical use in MS that impinge on the activity of macrophages/microglia.
High-Resolution Fmri Maps of Cortical Activation in Nonhuman Primates: Correlation with Intrinsic Signal Optical Images

Abstract:One of the most widely used functional brain mapping tools is blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This method has contributed to new understandings of the functional roles of different areas in the human brain. However, its ability to map cerebral cortex at high spatial (submillimeter) resolution is still unknown. Other methods such as single-and multiunit electrophysiology and intrinsic signal optical imaging have revealed submillimeter resolution of sensory topography and cortical columnar activations. However, they are limited either by spatial scale (electrophysiology characterizes only local groups of neurons) or by the inability to monitor deep structures in the brain (i.e., cortical regions buried in sulci or subcortical structures). A method that could monitor all regions of the brain at high spatial resolution would be ideal. This capacity would open the doors to investigating, for example, how networks of cerebral cortical columns relate to or produce behavior. In this article we demonstrate that, without benefit of contrast agents, at a magnetic field strength of 9.4 tesla, BOLD fMRI can reveal millimeter-sized topographic maps of digit representation in the somatosensory cortex of the anesthetized squirrel monkey. Furthermore, by mapping the "funneling illusion," it is possible to detect even submillimeter shifts in activation in the cortex. Our data suggest that at high magnetic field strength, the positive BOLD signal can be used to reveal high spatial resolution maps of brain activity, a finding that weakens previous notions about the ultimate spatial specificity of the positive BOLD signal.
High-Resolution Maps of Real and Illusory Tactile Activation in Primary Somatosensory Cortex in Individual Monkeys with Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Optical Imaging

Abstract:Although blood oxygenation level-dependent ( BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging ( fMRI) has been widely used to explore human brain function, questions remain regarding the ultimate spatial resolution of positive BOLD fMRI, and indeed the extent to which functional maps revealed by positive BOLD correlate spatially with maps obtained with other high-spatial-resolution mapping techniques commonly used in animals, such as optical imaging of intrinsic signal (OIS) and single-unit electrophysiology. Here, we demonstrate that the positive BOLD signal at 9.4T can reveal the fine topography of individual fingerpads in single-condition activation maps in nonhuman primates. These digit maps are similar to maps obtained from the same animal using intrinsic optical imaging. Furthermore, BOLD fMRI reliably resolved submillimeter spatial shifts in activation in area 3b previously identified with OIS ( Chen et al., 2003) as neural correlates of the "funneling illusion." These data demonstrate that at high field, high-spatial-resolution topographic maps can be achieved using the positive BOLD signal, weakening previous notions regarding the spatial specificity of the positive BOLD signal.
High-field fMRI unveils orientation columns in humans

Abstract:Functional (f)MRI has revolutionized the field of human brain research. fMRI can noninvasively map the spatial architecture of brain function via localized increases in blood flow after sensory or cognitive stimulation. Recent advances in fMRI have led to enhanced sensitivity and spatial accuracy of the measured signals, indicating the possibility of detecting small neuronal ensembles that constitute fundamental computational units in the brain, such as cortical columns. Orientation columns in visual cortex are perhaps the best known example of such a functional organization in the brain. They cannot be discerned via anatomical characteristics, as with ocular dominance columns. Instead, the elucidation of their organization requires functional imaging methods. However, because of insufficient sensitivity, spatial accuracy, and image resolution of the available mapping techniques, thus far, they have not been detected in humans. Here, we demonstrate, by using high-field (7-T) fMRI, the existence and spatial features of orientation- selective columns in humans. Striking similarities were found with the known spatial features of these columns in monkeys. In addition, we found that a larger number of orientation columns are devoted to processing orientations around 90 degrees (vertical stimuli with horizontal motion), whereas relatively similar fMRI signal changes were observed across any given active column. With the current proliferation of high-field MRI systems and constant evolution of fMRI techniques, this study heralds the exciting prospect of exploring unmapped and/or unknown columnar level functional organizations in the human brain.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To establish a set of methodological standard of retinotopic mapping using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to discuss anatomical features of functionally delineated V1/V2 boundary based on retinotopic criteria.METHODS:Three adults aged 25-30 (1 male and 2 females), right-handed, without contraindications of MRI were studied. Visual acuity was 20/20 or corrected to 20/20. Visual stimuli subtended a field of view of approximately 12 degrees, consisted of high contrast, achromatic and drifting checkerboards. Two types of stimuli were used: the rotating wedge, either clockwise or counterclockwise, to map the polar angle and the annular ring, either contracting or expanding, to map eccentricity. MRI parameters: GE signa VH/i 3.0T scanner. Functional data: GRE-EPI sequence, 20 slices lay perpendicular to the calcarine sulcus, TR: 2 s, TE: 40 ms, FA: 90 degrees, Phase: 128, FOV: 19 cm, matrix: 64x64, slice: 3 mm, gap: 0, resolution: 2.9 mmx2.9 mmx3.0 mm. Anatomical data was obtained using 3D-SPGR sequence to acquire high resolution. Data was analyzed using AFNI. In order to avoid the disadvantages of restricted view due to highly convoluted occipital cortex, cortical surface was unfolded and then cut and flattened. Functional data was presented to this flattened surface and subsequently analyzed.RESULTS:By using the phase-encoded visual stimuli, retinotopic organizations were exactly revealed both in the eccentricity and polar angle dimensions. Eccentricity maps showed that foveal representation lay in the occipital poles and the representation appeared further anterior as eccentricity increased. Polar angle maps showed that early retinotopically organized areas had either a mirror or non-mirror image representation of visual field. Boundaries of different visual areas were manually delineated based on retinotopic criteria called visual field sign, and the functionally delineated V1/V2 boundary located on the crests of gyrus.CONCLUSIONS:Phase-encoded stimuli is validated to be an efficient way to reveal retinotopic representation of visual cortex, promising a solid foundation for the future research under pathological conditions. Anatomical features of functionally delineated V1/V2 boundary support the wiring optimization principle.

Abstract:In human and nonhuman primate brains, columnar (mesoscale) organization has been demonstrated to underlie both lower and higher order aspects of visual information processing. Previous studies have focused on identifying functional preferences of mesoscale domains in specific areas; but there has been little understanding of how mesoscale domains may cooperatively respond to single visual stimuli across dorsal and ventral pathways. Here, we have developed ultrahigh-field 7 T fMRI methods to enable simultaneous mapping, in individual macaque monkeys, of response in both dorsal and ventral pathways to single simple color and motion stimuli. We provide the first evidence that anatomical V2 cytochrome oxidase-stained stripes are well aligned with fMRI maps of V2 stripes, settling a long-standing controversy. In the ventral pathway, a systematic array of paired color and luminance processing domains across V4 was revealed, suggesting a novel organization for surface information processing. In the dorsal pathway, in addition to high quality motion direction maps of MT, MST and V3A, alternating color and motion direction domains in V3 are revealed. As well, submillimeter motion domains were observed in peripheral LIPd and LIPv. In sum, our study provides a novel global snapshot of how mesoscale networks in the ventral and dorsal visual pathways form the organizational basis of visual objection recognition and vision for action.

Abstract:Objective To investigate functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) of visual cortex of blood oxygenation level dependent(BOLD).Methods Eighteen healthy volunteers were included in this experiment.The echo planar images of the visual cortex were acquired by signal of visual stimulation phases compared with signal of non visual stimulation phases.t-test analysis was used to statistically generate the activation map of brain cortex.Results Images of fMRI showed that the activation areas of brain cortex were found at the bilateral visual cortex when visual stimulation occured.Conclusion fMRI cold be used to study the functional areas action of human brain cortex.A preliminary location of the visual cortex could be acquired through fMRI of visual stimulation.

Abstract:There are currently largescale efforts to understand the brain as a connection machine. However, there has been little emphasis on understanding connection patterns between functionally specific cortical columns. Here, we review development and application of focal electrical and optical stimulation methods combined with optical imaging and fMRI mapping in the non-human primate. These new approaches, when applied systematically on a large scale, will elucidate functionally specific intra-areal and inter-areal network connection patterns. Such functionally specific network data can provide accurate views of brain network topology.
Are Export Support Programs Effective? Evidence from Tunisia #

Abstract:The paper combines firm-level datasets from Tunisia‘s customs, National Statistical Institute, and the FAMEX matching grant program to evaluate the effect of export promotion on the export performance of beneficiary firms. Propensity-score matching difference-in-difference and weighted least squares estimates suggest that beneficiaries expand at the intensive and the extensive margin (markets and products). However, this expansion does not translate into higher exports for beneficiaries beyond the program enrolment year. We show that existing exporters coming to FAMEX to expand into new markets or to develop new export products seem to have benefited more and that very small and relatively large grants have no significant effect on export performance. Our evidence suggests that although treated firms significantly diversified, they failed to transform this diversification into reduced exposure to price risk on their portfolio of export markets. We also show weak evidence of negative spillovers from treated to control firms.
Columnar Specificity of Microvascular Oxygenation and Blood Flow Response in Primary Visual Cortex: Evaluation by Local Field Potential and Spiking Activity.

Abstract:The relation of cortical microcirculation, oxygen metabolism, and underlying neuronal network activity remains poorly understood. Anatomical distribution of cortical microvasculature and its relationship to cortical functional domains suggests that functional organizations may be revealed by mapping cerebral blood flow responses. However, there is little direct experimental evidence and a lack of electrophysiological evaluation. In this study, we mapped ocular-dominance columns in primary visual cortex (V1) of anesthetized macaques with capillary flow-based laser speckle contrast imaging and deoxyhemoglobin-based intrinsic optical imaging. In parallel, the local field potentials (LFPs) and spikes were recorded from a linear array of eight microelectrodes, carefully positioned into left and right eye columns in V1. We found differential activation maps of blood flow, after masking large superficial draining vessels, exhibited a column-like pattern similar as the oximetric maps. Both the activated spikes and γ-band LFP demonstrated corresponding eye preference, consistent with the imaging maps. Our results present direct support in favor of previous proposals that the regulation of microcirculation can be as fine as the submillimeter scale, suggesting that cortical vasculature is functionally organized at the columnar level in a manner appropriate for supplying energy demands of functionally specific neuronal populations.

Abstract:Objective To study the visual areas of human cortex by functional MRI(fMRI) retinotopic mapping.Methods Six normal volunteers were examined with 1.5 T MRI scanner,and stimulated with the pattern of phase-encoded polar angle with clockwise or counterclockwise rotating wedges, and the pattern of eccentricity with concentric expanding or contracting rings.After the data preprocessing with realignment,register,the functional data with phase-encoded of visual cortex were analyzed with fourier transform to obtain phase delay of each voxel.Visual field sign(VFS)was calculated based on the coding information of eccentricity gradient and polar angle gradient.Visual field representations were determined by VFS.The visualizations were performed with 2-dimension and 3-dimensions methods.Results In all subjects,the visual areas of V1,V2,V3/VP,V3A/V4v and the higher visual areas of V7 and V8 were delineated clearly.The visual areas were distributed on the occipital cortex as topological frame.Conclusion The technique of functional MRI retinotopic mapping can measure the retinotopic organization of human visual cortex non-invasively and precisely.
Functional Architecture of the Foveal Confluence in Macaque Visual Cortex

Abstract:Visual behavior in primates is dominated by moving the eyes (more specifically the fovea) to objects of interest. Representing the most central part of visual space, the fovea is crucial for providing high spatial acuity needed for tasks such as reading, form identification, face recognition, and is key to natural visual attentional behavior. In early visual cortex, cortical representation disproportionately represents the fovea. However, beyond this, surprisingly little is known about its cortical representation (e.g. neurophysiological data comes primarily from extra-foveal cortex). We hypothesize that, given the known specialized functions performed by the fovea, there should be differences in foveal vs extra-foveal cortical organization. This thinking is based on studies which suggest that the unique functional organizations present in V1, V2, and V4 enable different integrative capabilities within those areas, thereby resulting in area-specific functionalities. To examine this hypothesis, we have conducted optical imaging in the region of the foveal confluence in awake and anesthetized macaque monkeys. We predict differences in the organization (either qualitative or quantitative) of ocular dominance, orientation, color, disparity, and motion in foveal vs extra-foveal cortex. We consider the possibility that at the foveal confluence there are no clear borders (i.e. retintopic reversals) between cortical areas and that the foveal confluence is structured as a single specialized cortical region shared by V1, V2, and V4. Also, given the lack of blue cone representation in the foveal retina, we examine whether there is blue color representation in foveal V1, V2, and V4. It may also be possible to address the question of whether V3 extends to the foveal confluence. Thus far, our preliminary data suggest that ocular dominance columns may be less regularly organized and wider in foveal regions of V1 and that there may be a lack of strong representation of blue in the foveal confluence. Abstract:There is a tendency for malunion to occur in fractures of the knee region in children because the growth plates are often affected. Leg length discrepancies are reported in more than 50% of the children and axis deviations in 20-40%. The prognostic significance of epiphyseal lesions is described (not always accurately) by the classifications of Salter and Harris or Aitken. Treatment is mostly directed at leg-length discrepancies and axis deviations by resection of callus formations, epiphysiodeses and osteotomies. A complete bone growth history is necessary to plan the operative procedure.
Selective Functional Connectivity between Ocular Dominance Columns in the Primary Visual Cortex

Abstract:The primary visual cortex (V1) in humans and many animals is comprised of fine-scale neuronal ensembles that respond preferentially to the stimulation of one eye over the other, also known as the ocular dominance columns (ODCs). Despite its importance in shaping our perception, to date, the nature of the functional interactions between ODCs has remained poorly understood. In this work, we aimed to improve our understanding of the interaction mechanisms between fine-scale neuronal structures distributed within V1. To that end, we applied high-resolution functional MRI to study mechanisms of functional connectivity between ODCs. Using this technique, we quantified the level of functional connectivity between ODCs as a function of the ocular preference of ODCs, showing that alike ODCs are functionally more connected compared to unalike ones. Through these experiments, we aspired to contribute to filling the gap in our knowledge of the functional connectivity of ODCs in humans as compared to animals.

Abstract:The primate cerebral cortex is organized into specialized areas representing different functional modalities (e.g., vision, audition, touch) and their associations along a continuous surface. The functional maps of these areas, however, are often investigated in a single modality at a time. Here, we developed and applied to awake primates a polarization-enhanced wide-field optical imaging method for measuring cortical hemodynamics through the intact skull. Adjacent somatosensory, auditory, and visual cortices were noninvasively localized and rapidly parcellated in awake marmosets ( Callithrix jacchus ), a primate model featuring a smooth cortex. Detailed somatotopy, tonotopy, and retinotopy were also mapped out on an individual-subject basis, with a new pure-tone-responsive tonotopic gradient discovered outside the auditory core. Moreover, the motion-sensitive extent surrounding the primate-specific MT/V5 and the location of a face-sensitive patch were both revealed with respect to retinotopy. This approach provides a powerful tool for mapping the functional landscape across modalities in a single non-human primate subject, and thus opens new opportunities for probing how primate cortical system is organized to enable real-world behaviors. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

Abstract:The largest visual area, known as the primary visual cortex or V1, has greatly contributed to the current understanding of mammalian and human visual pathways and their role in visual perception. The initial discovery of orientation-sensitive neurons in V1, arranged according to a retinotopic mapping, suggested an analogy to its function as a low-level feature analyzer. Subsequent discoveries of phase, spatial frequency, color, ocular origin, and direction-of-motion-sensitive neurons, arranged into overlapping maps, further lent support to the view that it performs a rich decomposition, similar to signal processing transforms, of the retinal output. Like the other cortical areas, V1 has a laminar organization with specialization for input from the relayed retinal afferents, output to the higher visual areas, and the segregation of the magno (motion) and parvo (form) pathways. Spatially lateral connections that exist between neurons of similar and varying properties have also been proposed to give rise to a computation of a bottom-up saliency map in V1. We provide a review of the selectivity of neurons in V1, laminar specialization and analogies to signal processing techniques, a model of V1 saliency computation, and higher-area feedback that may mediate perception.
Mesoscale functional organization and connectivity of color, disparity, and naturalistic texture in human second visual area

Abstract:Although parallel processing has been extensively studied in the low-level geniculostriate pathway and the high-level dorsal and ventral visual streams, less is known at the intermediate-level visual areas. In this study, we employed high-resolution fMRI at 7 Tesla to investigate the columnar and laminar organizations for color, disparity, and naturalistic texture in the human secondary visual cortex (V2), and their informational connectivity with lower and higher order visual areas. Although fMRI activations in V2 showed reproducible interdigitated color-selective thin and disparity-selective thick "stripe" columns, we found no clear evidence of columnar organization for naturalistic textures. Cortical depth-dependent analyses revealed the strongest color-selectivity in the superficial layers of V2, along with both feedforward and feedback informational connectivity with V1 and V4. Disparity selectivity was similar across different cortical depths of V2, which showed significant feedforward and feedback connectivity with V1 and V3ab. Interestingly, the selectivity for naturalistic texture was strongest in the deep layers of V2, with significant feedback connectivity from V4. Thus, while local circuitry within cortical columns is crucial for processing color and disparity information, feedback modulations from V4 play a dominant role in processing naturalistic textures in area V2.
