Abstract:The synthesis of hierarchical nanosized zeolite materials without growth modifiers and mesoporogens remains a substantial challenge. Herein, we report a general synthetic approach to produce hierarchical nanosized single-crystal aluminophosphate molecular sieves by preparing highly homogeneous and concentrated precursors and heating at elevated temperatures. Accordingly, aluminophosphate zeotypes of LTA (8-rings), AEL (10-rings), AFI (12-rings), and -CLO (20-rings) topologies, ranging from small to extra-large pores, were synthesized. These materials show exceptional properties, including small crystallites (30-150 nm), good monodispersity, abundant mesopores, and excellent thermal stability. A time-dependent study revealed a non-classical crystallization pathway by particle attachment. This work opens a new avenue for the development of hierarchical nanosized zeolite materials and understanding their crystallization mechanism.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures have been fabricated using colloidal zeolite silicalite nanocrystals as building blocks. Continuous, uniform, optically transparent and self-standing silicalite membranes with well-defined shapes and controlled mesoporosity were obtained by self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals followed by high-pressure compression and controlled secondary crystal growth via microwave treatment. The thickness of the compact self-standing membranes is tunable from 20 μm to several millimeters by simply using different surface weight densities. Controlled secondary growth via microwave treatment leads to a stronger self-standing membrane with controlled mesoporosity and has little effect on its thickness, crystallinity, micropore surface area and micropore volume.

Abstract:Slow crystallization and growth rate at room temperature in the presence of surfactant micelles is a new strategy used to synthesize hierarchical Na–A zeolites. The observed structure of the hierarchical materials was consistent with a two stage growth mechanism. During the early stage of the gel evolution, miniature zeolite gel particles were formed and assembled around surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide – CTAB) micelles. In a second stage, the slow mass transformation into crystalline phase and the low growth rate of the formed crystallites retained the CTAB micelles within the crystallization domain. After the removal of CTAB templates, the products showed large mesopores which were attributed to the interstitial voids between the aggregated zeolite nanocrystallites. The size of the mesopores can be further expanded by using linear hydrocarbons as swelling agents. The influences of the added amount of the hydrocarbons and the length of the hydrocarbon chains on the mesopore size were examined. The effects of the aging period and the concentration of CTAB in the synthesis mixture on the pore size distribution were also investigated. The colloidal suspension of the synthesized zeolite showed negative zeta potential throughout the entire range of pH. The mesoporous Na–A zeolite synthesized in this work showed higher ethylene adsorption capacity as compared to the conventional microporous Na–A zeolite. XRD, DLS, SEM, N2 adsorption–desorption at 77K, TEM, 29Si NMR and FTIR techniques were used to characterize the hierarchical Na–A zeolite.

Abstract:A series of hierarchically porous SAPO-34 zeolites with tunable crystal sizes varying from 40 to 200 nm were synthesized with different morphologies from well-dispersed ultra-small nanocrystals to compact spherical-like polycrystalline aggregates by only changing the Si/TEAOH (TEAOH: tetraethylammonium hydroxide) molar ratios in the gel precursors without using any meso-templates. The hierarchical samples were systematically characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XRF, 29Si MAS NMR spectra and N2 adsorption–desorption. It reveals that hierarchical SAPO-34 nanocrystals with high crystallinities, larger external surface areas (61 – 125 m2/g) and mesopore volumes (0.15 – 0.29 cm3/g) were obtained under current synthesis condition.

Abstract:Hierarchical zeolites have attracted significant attention from both academic and industrial communities due to their exceptional mass transport and accessibility to active sites while maintaining the shape selectivity of the zeolite. However, creating a hierarchical structure over small-pore zeolites remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we propose a novel approach that utilizes the methanol-mediated NH 4 F etching method to fabricate hierarchical SSZ-13 zeolite with well-distributed mesopores. Unlike the conventional aqueous NH 4 F etching process, the utilization of methanol as a solvent allows for the effective suppression of NH 4 F reactivity during its transport into the zeolite channels. NH 4 F remains inactive until exposed to resident water molecules in zeolite, and the subsequent hydrolysis process in situ activates the release of etching species, effectively eliminating the framework Si and Al species and allowing for uniform and controllable etching. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy provides in-depth insight into the etchant interactions with the framework defect sites and the evolution of aluminate and silicate species from framework to extra-framework, elucidating the structural and chemical changes occurring during the process. Our work presents an efficient strategy for the preparation of hierarchical zeolites with well-dispersed mesopores, offering opportunities for tailored pore engineering and holding potential for various applications such as catalysis, adsorption, and separation.

Abstract:This work reports that sub-micron sized hierarchical porous ZSM-5 particles with controllable mesoporous structures can be facilely synthesized in a seed-assisted system without using any secondary templates or organic additives. The results showed that typical samples so-obtained display relative uniform ellipsoidal sub-micron sized particles consisting of loosely packed primary nanocrystals. The mesoporous structures of ZSM-5 zeolite particles can be effectively introduced and adjusted by solely changing the quantity of NaOH in the initial synthesis mixture. The NaOH dosages significantly affect not only hierarchical mesoporosity but also the ratio of Si/Al and thus acidity of the final ZSM-5 product. Moreover, the effect of synthesis hydrothermal procedure was also investigated. The typical sample Z5-0.12 possesses high crystallinity, BET surface area, well-developed mesoporosity and improved catalytic performance in LDPE cracking. This approach constitutes a facile and cost-effective pathway to prepare sub-micron sized hierarchical porous ZSM-5 particles and might promote their application in industry.

Abstract:Hierarchical zeolites attract people’s attention due to their enhanced mass transfer properties in catalytic reactions. The research over obtaining these zeolites in green and efficient methods is of great significance for the current post-treatments and templating strategies tend to be costly for hierarchical zeolite synthesis. In this research, nanosized mesoporous ZSM-5 (SN-ZSM-5) zeolites have been synthesized without the addition of mesoscale templates under highly concentrated conditions. The physicochemical characteristics were systematically investigated by XRD, SEM, N2 sorption, TEM, and NMR. The SEM images showed ZSM-5 crystals with sizes between 50–110 nm were obtained. N2 sorption and high-resolution TEM images gave direct evidence for the hierarchical structure of SN-ZSM-5. The forming mechanism for the hierarchical structure was proposed that the etching effect of the highly alkaline environment for the starting gels played a critical role in the formation of hierarchical structure. Catalytic tests in methanol-to-olefins (MTO) showed the SN-ZSM-5 performed a longer catalyst lifetime and higher propylene selectivity than the conventional ZSM-5 zeolites (C-ZSM-5) obtained from a traditional hydrothermal method. The features of hierarchical structure in the SN-ZSM-5 crystals and the sustainability for synthesis method could show a promising choice for wide applications of these SN-ZSM-5 zeolites in the future.

Abstract:The synthesis of a hierarchical SSZ-13 zeolite with mesopores and micropores is one of the most effective strategies to overcome the diffusion limitation imposed by the micropores of SSZ-13 in reactions involving bulky reactants or intermediates. A zeolite with nanosheet morphology possesses the advantages of large inter-sheet mesopore volume, more accessible acid sites and short diffusion path lengths. Nevertheless, only a few works focused on the synthesis of the nanosheet-assembled SSZ-13 zeolite. In this work, a nanosheet-assembled hierarchical SSZ-13-TP 0.03 (thickness of 20 nm) zeolite was synthesized in a seed-assisted synthesis system by coupling a small amount of N , N , N -trimethyl-1-adamantylammonium hydroxide (TMAdaOH) with octadecyl-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)-ammonium chloride (TPOAC). In this strategy, the Si/Al ratio of the initial gel, seed, TPOAC and TMAdaOH amount in the synthesis system and the synergistic effects among them lead to the synthesis of SSZ-13 samples with various textural properties and morphologies. The distinct textural properties and morphologies of SSZ-13 result in the preparation of Pt/SSZ-13 catalysts with varied Pt dispersions. The catalyst, Pt supported on the nanosheet-assembled hierarchical SSZ-13 (Pt/SSZ-13-TP 0.03 ), exhibits higher hydrogenation ability than its corresponding catalyst, Pt supported on microporous or hierarchical SSZ-13 in the hydrogenation of naphthalene.

Abstract:ZSM-5 zeolites with hierarchical porosity have been an increasing attention due to their improvement in diffusion limitation issue. This work here reports that hierarchical porous ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized using fumed silica and as-synthesized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as dual-silica source for the first time with the aid of silicate-1 seed. The effects of the amounts of silicate-1 seed and as-synthesized MSNs on crystallinity, morphology, mesoporous structure and acidity of the prepared ZSM-5 zeolites were systematically investigated by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption and NH 3 -TPD techniques. The results showed that mesopores can be incorporated by introducing an appropriate amount of as-synthesized MSNs which also promote the crystallization of aluminosilicate at the same time. Moreover, the mesoporous structures of ZSM-5 zeolites can be flexibly regulated within a certain range via varying the dosage of as-synthesized MSNs. The obtained optimal sample Z-0.02ã0.2 with high crystallinity and bi-modal mesopores centered at 2.1ô nm and 3.4ô nm exhibits significantly improved catalytic performance in LDPE cracking on a TG apparatus, compared with the conventional mono-modal microporous ZSM-5 zeolite. This approach constitutes a simple and low-cost pathway to synthesize ZSM-5 zeolites with controllable hierarchical porous architecture and might facilitate their industrial application.

Abstract:Zeolites have been widely used in various fields in industry, such as catalysis, separation, and adsorption, etc. The small pore size of the micropores in the zeolite could lead to severe diffusion resistance in mass transfer. Numerous efforts have been dedicated to imposing hierarchical pore systems into zeolites by using templates or leaching methods. Here, we report the synthesis of single-crystalline hierarchical shell-like ZSM-5 by utilizing a dissolution-recrystallization post-treatment on mesoporous ZSM-5. Tetrapropylammonium hydroxide solution was used in the post-treatment. The hierarchical porosity in the crystalline shell can be controlled by adding sodium cations into the synthesis system. The hierarchical shell-like ZSM-5 reported here shows higher catalytic activity in acetalization reactions containing bulky molecules.

Abstract:Desilication in alkaline medium has been widely used in construction of hierarchical zeolites for industrially relevant catalytic processes. The built of hierarchy in zeolites, especially with low aluminum stability or high Si/Al ratio, often suffers from uncontrolled destruction of zeolitic framework, accompanied by a significant loss of microporous domains and intrinsic acidity after desilication. Here, we report a novel and simple methodology for preparation of hierarchical zeolites with highly complete framework and minimum sacrifice of microporosity and acidity. The pre-impregnated amines in zeolite micropores act as inner pore-directing agents (iPDAs), largely protecting the zeolitic framework and moderating the silicon extraction during the alkaline treatment. The resulting hierarchical zeolites exhibit high crystallinity, tunable hierarchy, stable framework, and well-preserved acidity, endowing them with significantly improved mass transport properties and enhanced activities in catalytic conversion of methanol or furfural.

Abstract:The preparation of zeolites has long been viewed as an empirical practice in which the impact of numerous synthesis parameters on complex pathways of crystallization remains unresolved. Efforts to achieve predictive control in zeolite crystal engineering are often motivated by the benefits of producing materials with nanosized dimensions for improved mass transport properties. In the past decade there has been substantial progress in the synthesis of zeolites and zeotypes with nanosized and hierarchical structures that have been shown to outperform conventional analogues in various applications. The ability to synthesize state-of-the-art nanoporous materials has socioeconomic advantages in processes that are critical to addressing twenty-first-century problems. Here we summarize synthetic methods used to prepare different classes of zeolitic materials and we highlight the diversity of nucleation and growth mechanisms, approaches to control these pathways through experimental design, and the advantages of infusing computational and big data analyses to transition zeolite synthesis away from trial-and-error methodologies.

Abstract:Unit-cell-thin zeolitic nanosheets have emerged as fascinating materials for catalysis and separation. The controllability of nanosheet stacking is extremely challenging in the chemistry of two-dimensional zeolitic materials. To date, the organization of zeolitic nanosheets in hydrothermal synthesis has been limited by the lack of tunable control over the guest-host interactions between organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) and zeolitic nanosheets. A direct synthetic methodology is reported that enables systematic manipulation of the aluminosilicate MWW-type nanosheet stacking. Variable control of guest-host interactions is rationally achieved by synergistically altering the charge density of OSDAs and synthetic silica-to-alumina composition. These finely controlled interactions allow successful preparation of a series of three-dimensional (3D) zeolites, with MWW-layer stacking in wide ranges from variably disorder to fully ordered, leading to tunable catalytic activity in the cracking reaction. These results highlight unprecedented opportunities to modulate zeolitic nanosheets arrangement in 3D zeolites whose structure can be tailored for catalysis and separation.

Abstract:We report a new strategy to synthesize the hierarchical mesoporous zeolite through design of mesoscale cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelle with cosolvent tertbutyl alcohol (TBA) and the 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) additive, by which the formation of hierarchical mesostructure arose from the condensing of zeolite fragments on the mesoscale surfactant micelles. The hierarchical mesoporous silica with zeolite Y or socialite fragment is synthesized for the first time, which exhibited both the mesostructure and the typical diffraction of zeolite. XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption, Al-27 MAS NMR, FTIR, and NH3-TPD techniques were employed to characterize the resulting samples, and the adsorption of NPYR (N-nitrosopyrrolidine) and NNN (N-nitrosonornicotine) were performed to assess the adsorptive capability of the zeolitic mesoporous materials. The MS3-4t-5b sample synthesized by assembling zeolite gel exhibited the adsorptive capacity comparable to NaY zeolite for trapping NPYR in airflow but four times superior to NaY for adsorbing bulky nitrosamine NNN in solution because of its hierarchical mesostructure

Abstract:Hierarchical zeolites combine the intrinsic catalytic properties of microporous zeolites and the enhanced access and transport of the additional meso- and/or macroporous system. These materials are the most desirable catalysts and sorbents for industry and become a highly evolving field of important current interests. In addition to the enhanced mass transfer leading to high activity, selectivity, and cycle time, another essential merit of the hierarchical structure in zeolite materials is that it can significantly improve the utilization effectiveness of zeolite materials resulting in the minimum energy, time, and raw materials consumption. Substantial progress has been made in the synthesis, characterization, and application of hierarchical zeolites. Herein, we provide an overview of recent achievements in the field, highlighting the significant progress in the past decade on the development of novel and remarkable strategies to create an additional pore system in zeolites. The most innovative synthesis approaches are reviewed according to the principle, versatility, effectiveness, and degree of reality while establishing a firm link between the preparation route and the resultant hierarchical pore quality in zeolites. Zeolites with different hierarchically porous structures, i.e., micro-mesoporous structure, micro-macroporous structure, and micro-meso-macroporous structure, are then analyzed in detail with concrete examples to illustrate their benefits and their fabrications. The significantly improved performances in catalytic, environmental, and biological applications resulting from enhanced mass transport properties are discussed through a series of representative cases. In the concluding part, we envision the emergence of "material-properties-by-quantitative and real rational design" based on the "generalized Murray's Law" that enables the predictable and controlled productions of bioinspired hierarchically structured zeolites. This Review is expected to attract important interests from catalysis, separation, environment, advanced materials, and chemical engineering fields as well as biomedicine for artificial organ and drug delivery systems.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Hierarchically structured materials are considered to be one of the important options to enhance the mass transportation efficiency in microporous zeolites. Herein, we reported a highly efficient steam-assisted crystallization strategy for the synthesis of a hierarchical TS-1 zeolite with a tunable macropore size. The amorphous SiO 2 –TiO 2 precursor dissolved gradually and acted as both a nutrient supplier and macropore template in situ . The framework Ti content of the synthesized TS-1 zeolites could be tuned over a wide range (Ti wt% = 0.70–1.39) by varying the Ti content of the SiO 2 –TiO 2 precursor. Moreover, the pore size of the macropores could be modulated according to the particle size of the precursor based on the investigation of the formation mechanism of the macropores in the hierarchical TS-1 zeolite. The hierarchical TS-1 zeolite exhibited better catalytic activity in the epoxidation reaction of 1-hexene and hydroxylation of phenol compared to the typical microporous zeolites. The improved performance of the hierarchical TS-1 zeolite was probably caused by the improved diffusion performance of the hierarchical structure.

Abstract:Columned ZSM-5 zeolite monoliths with hierarchical structure and excellent mechanical strength were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal transformation method. The pre-formed extrudates of aluminosilicate embedded with β zeolite were subjected to a hydrothermal synthesis system and the hierarchical porous ZSM-5 zeolite monoliths with the same columned shape were obtained after the hydrothermal treatment. The intra-particle hollow structure formed during hydrothermal synthesis was attributed to the digestion of inner β zeolite accompanying with the growth of ZSM-5 zeolite shell. The related data of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis, N2-sorption experiment and mercury intrusion prosimetry (MIP), showed ZSM-5 zeolite monolith had enriched multi-porosity and excellent mechanical stability, which contribute to its further application in field of catalysis and separation. The obtained hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite monoliths showed superior catalytic performance in α-pinene isomerization for their proper acidity and good diffusion, compared with the ZSM-5 zeolite sample prepared from the precursor without β zeolite.
