Abstract:CF4 is one of the representative and environmentally hazardous perfluorinated compounds. Even though their decomposition via a catalytic thermal process is an effective process for dissociating C-F bonds by employing catalysts with Lewis acid sites, the related mechanisms are unclear. Herein, we report a theoretical mechanism for the hydrolysis of tetrafluoromethane (CF4) on an gamma-alumina surface via density functional theory calculations. The overall reaction mechanism was divided into two steps: CF2O formation and CO2 formation. After the dissociative adsorption of CF4 to the strongest Lewis acid site on the surface of the catalyst, several pathways of defluorination reaction were investigated considering the presence of water and the order of reaction steps. Regardless of the reaction pathway considered, the rate-determining step of the overall reaction was found to be the first dissociation of the C-F bond in CF4, which has the highest energy barrier of 42.31 kcal/mol. Interestingly, oxygen vacancies were readily formed on the catalyst surface during several reaction pathways following its interaction with the reaction intermediate, and these sites could be replaced by fluorine atoms detached from CF4. Our findings suggest that facile desorption of HF, in addition to the presence of strong acidic sites on the catalyst surface for C-F bond dissociation, is critical for improving the CF4 hydrolysis.

Abstract:Fluorine-containing medicinal compounds frequently allow modulation of physical-chemical properties. Here, we address the effect of fluorine, near the ethylamino side chain, on conformational flexibility and noncovalent interactions (NCIs) of the selected jet-cooled monohydrated cluster of 2-(2-fluoro-phenyl)-ethylamine (2-FPEA) by mass-selected resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization and ionization-loss stimulated Raman spectroscopies. Our results show that Raman spectral signatures of the 2-FPEA-H2O cluster match the scaled harmonic vibrational Raman frequencies, resulting from density functional theory calculations of the most stable 2-FPEA gauche conformer hydrogen-bonded (HB) to water, confirming the three-dimensional cluster structure. This predicted electronic structure, together with NCI analysis, allows visualization and assessment of the attractive and repulsive interactions. The comparison of the NCIs and revealed red (O-H and N-H stretches) and blue shifts (C-H stretches and CH2 out-of-plane bends) of the cluster to other class members confirm O-H···N, N-H···π, C-H···O, and C-H···F HB formation and their contribution to structure stabilization, uncovering the potential of the approach.

Abstract:Solutions of alkali metal fluorides in aliphatic diols or carboxylic acids have been investigated by 19F n.m.r. at concentrations of ca. 0.5 mol kg–1 and greater. Heats of association of potassium fluoride with ethane-1,2-diol and methanoic acid are obtained from variable-temperature n.m.r. studies. The nature of the strong hydrogen bond and its influence on the n.m.r. spectra are discussed.

Strong Hydrogen-Bonding in Aliphatic Diol Solutions of Alkali-Metal Fluorides

Abstract:Heavy alkali-metal fluorides are soluble in low-molecular-weight liquid aliphatic diols. Low-field shifts in the proton magnetic resonances of selected fluoride–diol solutions may be interpreted as being due largely to strong hydrogen bonding between the fluoride anion and the diol hydroxyls, although cation effects are also evident. Variable-temperature 1H n.m.r. studies on KF–1,2-ethanediol, CH3CN–1,2-ethanediol, and neat 1,2-ethanediol have been carried out and values of –(50 ± 10) kJ mol–1 for ΔH⊖ and –(130 ± 25) J K–1 mol–1 for ΔS⊖ have been determined for the (F ⋯ HO)– hydrogen bond.

Abstract:The direct observation of pre-formed hydrogen bonded fluoride complexes by mass spectrometry has been achieved for the first time by fast atom bombardment of the solid and liquid samples. For a series of substituted phenols hydrogen bonded to fluoride it has been found that the substituents affect the apparent stability of the complexes as measured by the relative intensities of the ion peaks.

Abstract:Fluorination mechanism of 2-hydroxyl-3-phenylcarboxylate with diethylaminosulfur trifluoride (DAST) was investigated by using ab initio MO calculations. This reaction gave two products, 2-fluoro-3-phenylpropiolate and 2-fluoro-3-phenylpropionate, depending on the substituent on the phenyl ring (NO2, H, OCH3). Therefore, two possible mechanisms, the SN2 mechanism and that via the phenonium intermediate, were examined. As the activation energies for the SN2 reaction of the three compounds are almost same each other and very low, the substituent effects on the phenyl ring is too small to distinguish the product distribution observed for the compounds. The stabilization energy of phenonium ions, which are feasible intermediates for the SN1 reaction, are large difference between the three intermediates. As a result, the fluorination is considered to be proceeded on SN1 mechanism. Additionally, it is shown that the ability of leaving group for an intermediate generated from the reaction of alcohol with DAST is as large as mesyl and tosyl groups.

Abstract:Reagent loading and drying conditions have been compared for alkali metal fluride (MF)–alumina supported reagents, by reaction studies and a series of analytical techniques. The reaction studies indicate that whereas a combination of low MF loadings and highly efficient drying procedures give the best reagents for catalytic reactions, somewhat higher loadings and more moderate drying conditions give the best reagents for non-catalytic reactions. The analytical studies enable some rationalisation of the reaction results as well as providing important clues concerning the nature of the active-basic species. The formation of OH– on the reagent surface cannot be entirely responsible for the high basicity of the reagents and it seems that co-ordinately unsaturated F– ions on the reagent surface play an important role in the behaviour of the reagents. High MF loadings and high drying temperatures result in significant structural damage to the reagents with resulting loss in activity.

Abstract:The hydrofluorination of alkenes represents an attractive strategy for the synthesis of aliphatic fluorides. This approach provides a direct means to form C(sp(3))-F bonds selectively from readily available alkenes. Nonetheless, conducting hydrofluorination using nucleophilic fluorine sources poses significant challenges due to the low acidity and high toxicity associated with HF and the poor nucleophilicity of fluoride. In this study, we present a new Co(salen)-catalyzed hydrofluorination of simple alkenes utilizing Et3N3HF as the sole source of both hydrogen and fluorine. This process operates via a photoredox-mediated polar-radical-polar crossover mechanism. We also demonstrated the versatility of this method by effectively converting a diverse array of simple and activated alkenes with varying degrees of substitution into hydrofluorinated products. Furthermore, we successfully applied this methodology to F-18-hydrofluorination reactions, enabling the introduction of F-18 into potential radiopharmaceuticals. Our mechanistic investigations, conducted using rotating disk electrode voltammetry and DFT calculations, unveiled the involvement of both carbocation and Co-IV-alkyl species as viable intermediates during the fluorination step, and the contribution of each pathway depends on the structure of the starting alkene.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculation is carried out to investigate the structures, (19)F and (27)Al NMR chemical shifts of aqueous Al-F complexes and their water-exchange reactions. The following investigations are performed in this paper: (1) the microscopic properties of typical aqueous Al-F complexes are obtained at the level of B3LYP/6-311+G**. Al-OH(2) bond lengths increase with F(-) replacing inner-sphere H(2)O progressively, indicating labilizing effect of F(-) ligand. The Al-OH(2) distance trans to fluoride is longer than other Al-OH(2) distance, accounting for trans effect of F(-) ligand. (19)F and (27)Al NMR chemical shifts are calculated using GIAO method at the HF/6-311+G** level relative to F(H(2)O)(6)(-) and Al(H(2)O)(6)(3+) references, respectively. The results are consistent with available experimental values; (2) the dissociative (D) activated mechanism is observed by modeling water-exchange reaction for [Al(H(2)O)(6-i)F(i)]((3-i)+) (i = 1-4). The activation energy barriers are found to decrease with increasing F(-) substitution, which is in line with experimental rate constants (k(ex)). The log k(ex) of AlF(3)(H(2)O)(3)(0) and AlF(4)(H(2)O)(2)(-) are predicted by three ways. The results indicate that the correlation between log k(ex) and Al-O bond length as well as the given transmission coefficient allows experimental rate constants to be predicted, whereas the correlation between log k(ex) and activation free energy is poor; (3) the environmental significance of this work is elucidated by the extension toward three fields, that is, polyaluminum system, monomer Al-organic system and other metal ions system with high charge-to-radius ratio.
