Abstract:Effects of the isothermal crystallization temperatures of poly(vinylidene fluoride), T(IC,PVDF), on polymorphic crystalline structure, phase transition, fractional crystallization, and enzymatic degradation of poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) in crystalline/crystalline blends have been investigated. The crystal modifications of PBA can be regulated by T(IC,PVDF). Lower T(IC,PVDF) (e.g., 80 °C) facilitates the formation of PBA α crystals in both the isothermal and nonisothermal melt crystallizations and also favors the β-to-α phase transition of PBA upon annealing at elevated temperatures. This might be attributable to the decreased equilibrium melting temperature of PBA when T(IC,PVDF) is decreased. Higher T(IC,PVDF) is favorable for the fractional crystallization of PBA, which tends to segregate in the interlamellar regions of the PVDF matrix under these conditions. PBA shows faster enzymatic degradation in the blends with a lower T(IC,PVDF) than those with a higher T(IC,PVDF), attributable to the preferential formation of α crystals at a lower T(IC,PVDF). This study provides a new method to control the crystal modification and physical properties of polymorphic polymers in their blend systems.

Abstract:Polyvinylphenol forms strong hydrogen bonds with fluoride to an extent dependent on the solvent environment. Remarkable changes in the Fourier transform i.r. spectra and the thermal behaviour of the polymer are observed on formation of strongly hydrogen bonded complexes which can be used as highly nucleophilic forms of the polymer suitable for derivatization.

Abstract:The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in PVDF/dibutyl phthalate (DBP)/di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) blends via thermally induced phase separation were investigated through differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The Ozawa approach failed to describe the crystallization behavior of PVDF in PVDF/DBP/DEHP blends, whereas the modified Avrami equation successfully described the nonisothermal crystallization process of PVDF. Two stages of crystallization were observed in this analysis, including primary crystallization and secondary crystallization. The influence of the cooling rate and DBP ratio in the diluent mixture on the crystallization mechanism and crystal structure was determined by this method. The Mo approach well explained the kinetics of primary crystallization. An analysis of these two methods indicated that the increase in the DBP ratio in the diluent mixture caused a decrease in the crystallization rate at the primary crystallization stage. The activation energy was determined according to the Kissinger method and also decreased with the DBP ratio in the diluent mixture increasing. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The effects of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) component on the crystallization kinetics, crystalline structure, phase transition, and morphology of polymorphic poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) in their miscible PVDF/PBA binary blends have been investigated. The polymorphism of PBA can be regulated upon blending with PVDF. The incorporated PVDF faciliates the formation of PBA alpha-crystal, which is probably attributed to the thermodynamic and kinetic contributions. From the crystallization kinetics, it was found that a small amount of PVDF acts as a nucleating agent and can accelerate the crystallization of PBA, while a large amount of PVDF hinders the crystallization of PBA due to the confinement effect. In addition, the addition of PVDF greatly accelerates the beta- to alpha-form phase transition of PBA upon annealing the PBA beta-form at higher tmeperataure (48 degrees C). However, the large amount of PVDF decelerates the phase transition to a certain extent. The possible reasons for these phenomena were also proposed.

Abstract:This study evaluated the time scales and chemistry of thermal decomposition and combustion of highly fluorinated polymers. Three different compounds have been studied using resistive heating to initiate thermal decomposition or combustion and FT-IR to determine the concentration time traces of several different intermediates and products. The tests indicated that the compounds produced significantly different concentrations of hydrofluoric acid, HF, when heated in a dried air atmosphere at ambient pressure. Small differences in the degree of fluorination can produce an order of magnitude change of the maximum HF concentration attained and significantly affect the time to achieve maximum HF concentration.

Abstract:A group of high molecular weight graft stabilisers, both fluorinated and non-fluorinated, were synthesised by thermal ring-opening esterification of anhydride copolymers. These included poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) and poly(maleic anhydride-octadecene) and were reacted with alcohols, including 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctanol, 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluoro-dodecanol and 1-octanol. The stabilisers were fully characterised by 1H, 19F and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Their phase behaviour in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), vinylidene fluoride (VDF), and a mixture of scCO2/VDF was also studied using a variable volume view cell. Each stabiliser was tested for the dispersion polymerisation of VDF in scCO2. The effect of the stabiliser architecture on the molecular weight and morphology of the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer product was investigated. Steric stabilisation effects were observed. Gel permeation chromatography and scanning electron microscopy were used for the characterisation of the molecular weight and morphology of PVDF polymers.

Abstract:The mechanism of the thermal degradation of polytetrafluoroethylene is investigated. It is shown that the chain transfer reaction should not be ignored and that a reasonable explanation for the observation that monomer is almost the exclusive product of vacuum thermal degradation is the rate of diffusion and volatilization of larger fragments from the polymer. Diffusion of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene through polytetrafluoroethylene was studied. The diffusivities are 72 and 39 × 10−10 cm.2/sec. for C2F4 and C3F6, respectively, at 24°C. An apparatus for measuring the weight and temperature of degrading polymers under vacuum is also described.

Abstract:The present article describes the results of studies of the peculiarities of thermal behavior and degradation of low‐molecular fractions obtained by sublimation of the powder ultradispersed polytetrafluoroethylene under isothermal conditions at 50°C–100°C. The peculiarities of fractions transition into the gas phase at heating were studied with IR spectroscopy method and interpreted based on the quantum‐chemical calculations of the model fluorocarboned molecules. The calculation and spectroscopic data provide grounds to assume the presence of small molecules and radical structures in gas phase. The radical fragments formed in the gas phase as a result of the polymer chains thermal destruction provide the structure recovery during the subsequent condensation of the sample. Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene/hexafluoropropylene) terpolymers were synthesized by bulk polymerization process at ambient temperature based on alkyl borane/oxygen initiator. The ferroelectric and dielectric properties were investigated and compared with those of poly(vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene) copolymer. The DSC, X-ray and FT-IR results suggest that the third comonomer in the polymer chain breaks the large polar domains into smaller domain size and reduces the crystallinity of terpolymer. As a result, both the ferroelectric–paraelectric phase transition and melting process take place at lower temperature. The smaller domain makes the dipoles reversal at lower electric field and reduces the polarization hysteresis as well as polarization level. High electrostrictive strain (2.5%) was obtained at low electric field for terpolymer with small quantity of HFP. The polarization and dielectric behaviors imply that the terpolymer is a typical ferroelectric relaxor. The terpolymer also shows higher room temperature dielectric constant than that of copolymer due to the lower phase-transition temperature.

Abstract:Evaluation and understanding of the thermal behavior of polymers is crucial for many applications, e.g., polymer processing at relatively high temperatures, and for evaluating polymer-polymer miscibility. In this study, the differences in the thermal behavior of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) raw powder and physically crosslinked films were investigated using various methods, such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and derivative TGA (DTGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Various strategies were adopted, e.g., film casting from PVA solutions in H2O and D2O and heating of samples at carefully selected temperatures, in order to provide insights about the structure-properties relationship. It was found that the physically crosslinked PVA film presents an increased number of hydrogen bonds and increased thermal stability/slower decomposition rate compared to the PVA raw powder. This is also depicted in the estimated values of specific heat of thermochemical transition. The first thermochemical transition (glass transition) of PVA film, as for the raw powder, overlaps with mass loss from multiple origins. Evidence for minor decomposition that occurs along with impurities removal is presented. The overlapping of various effects (softening, decomposition, and evaporation of impurities) has led to confusion and apparent consistencies, e.g., from the XRD, it is derived that the film has decreased crystallinity, and apparently this is in agreement with the lower value of heat of fusion. However, the heat of fusion in this particular case has a questionable meaning.

Abstract:Poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a versatile polymer that shows polymorphism, and most of its applications are based on its piezoelectric properties given by its polar crystalline phases. Increasing the polymer's polar β-phase content has been a major pursuit in material science. We present the results on the evolution of induced polymorphic changes of PVDF through thermal treatment and the presence of the nano-ZnO with different morphologies. Three types of samples—a PVDF pure layer, PVDF:ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and PVDF:ZnO nanorods (NRs)—were subjected to stress by heating at different temperatures from 50 °C close to melting temperature, 170 °C. The changes in PVDF–ZnO composite layers were investigated in situ using an experimental setup consisting of a high-resolution micro-Raman spectrometer and a thermo-electric cell. The ZnO NPs and NRs added in PVDF lead to obtaining a PVDF nanocomposite in which the intensity of the β phase is much higher than that of the α phase: intensities ratio Iβ(840.6 cm−1)/Iα(798.9 cm−1) > 5.56. The phase is stable up to 150 °C, and with the increase in temperature to 170 °C, the β phase passes to a lower crystallinity α phase with a large amorphous content highlighted by the 400–700 cm−1 and 800–1000 cm−1 regions without Raman peaks.

Abstract:Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) alternating multilayered materials with different layer numbers (2,16 and 64) were fabricated through layer-multiplying coextrusion technology.The influence of layer numbers on the thermal decomposition and heat release behaviors of multilayered specimens was investigated through polarized light micrographs,vertical burning test,thermal gravity analysis,infrared analysis and micro calorimeter test.The results show that PVDF and PMMA layers are distributed alternatively along the thickness direction of the multilayered specimen.With increasing the layer numbers,the vertical burning behavior is nearly unchanged,but the thermal stability tends to be improved.It is considered that the enriched interfaces make more PVDF layers act as barriers to insulate heat transfer,so that the thermal decomposition of PMMA layers is significandy inhibited.

Abstract:The intrinsic and ambient‐induced thermal decomposition mechanisms in low dielectric‐constant (k) fluorocarbon films have been studied by interferometry for thermal stability. The fluorocarbon films were deposited by pulsed plasma chemical vapor deposition from tetrafluoroethylene. Pulsing the plasma allows films with various degrees of cross‐linking and free radicals to be produced. In situ annealing in fluorine and inert environments give small improvements in postanneal thermal stability. However, substantial network rearrangement and film loss must occur in order to improve the thermal stability of the resulting annealed material. The effect of various ambient gases on decomposition during ex situ heating was also studied. Oxygen incorporates into highly cross‐linked films, reducing thermal stability. However, oxygen is less detrimental to the thermal stability of films having more linear chain structure. Fluorine, while able to provide a small degree of free radical capping, predominately etches the films at high temperatures. Hydrogen slightly reduces stability in linear chain films by forming low molecular weight fragments. In highly cross‐linked films, hydrogen and nitrogen anneals give similar outcomes. In both in situ and ex situ cases, the degree of cross‐linking in the film plays a role in determining the mechanism of decomposition, with these moderately cross‐linked films falling in a minimum of stability. © 1999 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:Ab initio LCAO-MO-SCF calculations have been performed on the polyfluoride ions HnFn+1–, n= 1–4, and the hydrogen fluoride polymers (HF)m, m= 1–4, to determine their molecular configurations and the hydrogen-bond energies of the polyfluorides. All the polyfluorides are strongly hydrogen bonded and have structures in which a central fluorine acts as the acceptor to one to four HF molecules. The hydrogen fluoride polymers prefer open-chain arrangements. A safe and simple method of preparing K[HF2] in high yield is given.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is predominantly characterized by alternating CH2 and CF2 units in a polymer backbone, originating from the head-to-tail addition of monomers or regular propagation. Due, to a small extent, to inverse monomer addition, so-called defect structures occur which influence the macroscopic properties of PVDF significantly. The amount of defect structures in the material is determined by the polymerization conditions. Here, the temperature dependence of the fraction of defect structures in PVDF obtained from polymerizations between 45 and 90 °C is reported. We utilized 19F-NMR spectroscopy to determine the fraction of defect structures as a function of temperature. To derive kinetic data, the polymerization of VDF is considered a quasi-copolymerization described by the Terminal Model involving four different propagation reactions. Based on the experimentally determined temperature-dependent fractions of defect structures, the known overall propagation rate coefficient, and taking into account the self-healing behavior of the macroradical, the Arrhenius parameters of the individual propagation rate coefficients were determined using the Monte Carlo methods.

Abstract:Casting method was employed to prepare films of poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate-co-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate) (PVVH) terpolymer doped with different amounts of tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate ([TBA][BF 4 ]) electrolyte. The interaction between terpolymer and electrolyte was evident in the shift and reduction of the ATR-FTIR peak intensities of the C–Cl stretching vibrations at 613 cm −1 and 688 cm −1 with increasing electrolyte concentration. The effect of electrolyte was also visible in the reduction of DTG/DTA peak temperature ( T p ) of the second stage of the composites. The decrease of the DSC glass transition temperature ( T g ) from 344 K to 310 with increasing electrolyte content indicates the plasticization effect of the electrolyte that reduces the inter- and intramolecular interaction maintaining the flexibility of the PVVH terpolymer backbone to bend and slide more readily. The kinetics of thermal degradation of pure compounds and their composites were investigated and discussed in terms of the Coats–Redfern approach. The results revealed an increase in the activation energy of thermal degradation with increasing the electrolyte content. Linear and nonlinear optical parameters were calculated and discussed in terms of the single oscillator model and Miller's rule. The visible and UV transmittance of the investigated materials demonstrated values of 91% and 5%, respectively. Furthermore, they achieved reflectance of 3 and 58% in the visible and UV regions, respectively, making these composites an excellent candidate for optical applications. Besides, the optical conductivity ( σ op ) and dielectric constant of all samples were investigated.

Abstract:We report structural, caloric, and dielectric properties in the blends of relaxor poly(vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene–chlorofluoroethylene) terpolymer with small amount of poly(vinylidene fluoride–chlorotrifluoroethylene) copolymer, developed on aluminum surface. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry results indicate that the copolymer additive disturbs the crystallizing process of the terpolymer. Consequently, relatively high values of the dielectric constant of ≈80, detected in terpolymer films around room temperature, decrease to ≈60 in blends. We show that addition of the copolymer does not influence the relaxor dielectric dynamics of the terpolymer and we explain the detected dielectric response by calculations that take into account the fact that in these heterogeneous systems two similar dynamic processes superimpose in the same temperature range, i.e., relaxor dynamics in the crystalline regions and a glassy transition in the amorphous matrix.

Abstract:Hydrogenated bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PHBPA) was successfully synthesized from dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and hydrogenated bisphenol-A (HBPA) by the method of two-step polycondensation. The chemical structure and the molecular weight of PHBPA was identified by <sup>1</sup>H-NMR spectra and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), respectively. In order to analyze the thermal degradation mechanism of PHBPA, a non-isothermal pyrolysis process was conducted and the violate products were detected using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). There were some reactions occurred during the pyrolysis including decarboxylation, disproportionation of the C–H transfer and β–H transfer, and the Fries rearrangement. In addition, the well-known Flynne–Walle–Ozawa (FWO) and Coats–Redfern kinetic analysis methods were used to calculate the values of activation energy and pre-exponential factors. Furthermore, isothermal pyrolysis experiments were performed and revealed that the reaction of decarboxylation occurred at 225 °C. This decarboxylation suggests that the molecular chain of PHBPA does not easily grow to a high-molecular-weight polymer.

Abstract:This study reports the phase transformation of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in its miscible blends with poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P34HB) upon stretching. The original alpha-form of the PVDF component in the blends is converted into the beta-form by stretching, which is decreased with the increasing P34HB content. Moreover, alpha -> beta transformation of the PVDF component in the blends exhibits a sharp transition at the P34HB content of about 15 wt%. It is correlated with composition dependent dissolution and crystallization of the P34HB component in the amorphous phase of the PVDF component.

Abstract:The present work focused on the effect of the interactions between poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) chains and solvent molecules on the structure and crystallization behavior of PVDF in films obtained by solution casting. In a single solvent system, the film cast from the good solvent of N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF), showed dominantly β‐phase crystals with the highest PVDF crystallinity (50.6%) and the largest spherulite size, about 4 μm, at the top surface. The samples deposited from good swelling agents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF) and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), exhibited mainly the original α phase with some amount of β‐phase crystals; the crystallization behavior and the morphology of the surface were similar to the original PVDF resin, because of the only partially dissolved PVDF chains in these two solvents. In a mixed solvent system (THF/DMF), the β phase formation linearly increased as the DMF component increased, determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques, owing to increased interactions between PVDF chains and DMF molecules. The film surface consisted of β spherulites with average size of about 3 μm, which were smaller than those grown from pure DMF, because of the increased crystallization rate in the mixed solvent.
