Abstract:This paper employed quantitative methods to explore the trends of audience research in Mainland China by analyzing research articles in three major journalism and communication academic journals. The author analyzed research approaches, research methods, medium of focus and theoretical frameworks in these audience research articles from 1985 to 2002. Unlike findings derived from the analyses of mass communication research articles in major international journals, most of the research articles in Mainland China used qualitative methods. Chinese scholars tend to adopt behaviorist and structural approaches towards the study of audience. The number of research articles that dealt with broadcast and print media exceeded any other media, while more and more studies on Internet users are being conducted. Chinese scholars began to develop theories in recent years. The future study will continue based on analysis of other research materials and comparison with audience research articles in leading international journals.

Abstract:Communication Studies in Chinese mainland start from the most practical spheres of audience research,media management and environmental studies.Introductory articles about Western communication theories and methods also account for a high proportion.Studies on the media literacy and public communication appear until relatively recent years,and the number of organizational communication and interpersonal communication research is still fairly small. The number of studies based on the cases of Chinese mainland is in exponential increase.Moreover,with the increase of international exchanges and the expansion of researcher's academic view in communication,there are more research findings in the communication mechanisms of European countries and the United States,especially in public communication, of which China showed an obvious lack.

Abstract:Television documentaries in China, especially on the largest national television channel China Central Television (CCTV), is a unique object of research reflecting a wide range of socio-cultural, political and technological aspects of the development of Chinese society. CCTV is not only an important information and entertainment source, but also a powerful tool for influencing public opinion, forming national identity and promoting public policy. The analysis of the history of the development of television documentaries in China reflects the influence of political events and socio-cultural changes on its evolution. Starting from the early stages of the development of Chinese television, when it served as a tool of state propaganda, and up to the present, when new topics and genres appeared, the study will help to understand how television documentaries have become an important element of cultural heritage and a means of public communication. The organizational structure of CCTV, as a key player in the Chinese media space, plays a significant role in shaping content and influencing public opinion. The method or methodology of the study. The methodology of this study is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of television documentaries in China with an in-depth examination of the example of China Central Television (CCTV). This methodology is based on a comprehensive study of historical, cultural, political and technological aspects of the development of television documentaries in China. The study of television documentaries in China, with a focus on the example of China Central Television (CCTV), provides a significant contribution to understanding the diverse aspects of the formation and impact of this media format in the context of Chinese culture and society. The scientific novelty of this study is manifested in several key aspects. Firstly, an extensive historical analysis reveals the evolution of television documentaries in China over various periods, emphasizing the influence of political changes and socio-cultural factors on its development. Secondly, the structural analysis of CCTV reveals the organizational mechanisms that form documentary projects. Considering the interaction between the structure of the channel and the content of programs makes it possible to understand what factors influence the formation and implementation of documentary initiatives, as well as how these factors are related to public policy. The third important achievement is the thematic analysis, which highlights the main themes and directions of documentary on CCTV.

Abstract:Research access to mainland China, once severely circumscribed, has expanded tremendously during the post-Mao reform period, with important implications for the study of Chinese mass communication. Fieldwork possibilities mean that scholars are privy to a great deal more of the media circuit – not only to voluminous content that can be systematically sampled, but also to structures, contexts, practices, processes, places, and people involved in production and reception. Abstract:Besides being the most influential television news program with the largest viewership in China, Xinwen Lianbo (Television News Simulcast) also boasts of unique political value in the Chinese media landscape. Each and every change in form the program has adopted since its first broadcast in 1978, has been a reflection of a certain aspect or element of the arch of political reform in the country, and has been widely interpreted as such, thus making it ‘the toughest nut to crack’ in news reform. Throughout its 35 years of history, by striving to represent, maintain, adapt and disseminate the established ideological framework, thus ensuring political reform has progressed at a cautious and gradual pace acceptable to the ruling party, Xinwen Lianbo has proven to be a great example of the construction of political reality by journalistic text on the symbolic level. This article adopts the methodology of new social history with semi-participatory observation as it combs through the evolution of Xinwen Lianbo over 35 years, in an attempt to explore the patterns and paths of Chinese journalistic reform and the factors that have come to shape this journey in the broader context of political reform in China.

Abstract:Studies of mass communication in China since the year 1978 have undergone three important stages of development.Despite all the criticisms and doubts therein,remarkable progress has been made.At the same time,there are quite a few problems that are worthy of attention: measure-based researches outweigh basic ones,there exists a remarkable rupture inside the discipline which calls for better communication,the right of speaking and power of influence at major issues are weak,and the academic system in the field under discussion is far from sound.To usher in better development in the future,we should further strengthen theoretical construction on the basis of the present empirical studies,pay more attention to rewriting the history of mass communication thoughts,make more in-depth case studies from the angle of anthropology and sociology,and make critical and interpretive studies on media culture.

Abstract:This paper ponders on the academic development of college journalism and communication in China during the past 3 decades from the perspective of experience,problems and outlook.There are 5 experiences: the support of the funda-mental policies of opening and reform,emancipating the mind and moving steadily,opening to outside and attracting overseas intellectuals,hanging on both fundamental and applicative research,and earnestly improving research methods.The problems include less understanding to the concepts and categories,less learning consciousness and courage and less symbolized achievement.In future,it is necessary to make planning,to conquer key problems and to provide condition for yielding sym-bolized achievement.

Abstract:We conclude that journalism is not an entirely mature profession.Journalism professionalism is being shaped.In fact,affected by culture,social system and personal education,Chinese journalists today are hard to be called a professional staff.Journalism education has not acquired enough dignity and high evaluation from journalists.Some people think there is a long distance between education and practice;others feel a lack of things to be compared with students in other professions.Talking with interviewees,we notice that there is a wrong idea that indicated journalism education is of no use.Some media even consider refusing students of journalism major.In our opinion,it does not match the international trend and is to some extend a denial of Chinese journalism education.We find benefits from professional journalism education as follows:Firstly,it can advance journalists' sense of responsibility;secondly,it can cultivate their professional ethics;thirdly,it can teach journalists advanced writing and management skills;fourthly,it can offer journalists wide a global outlook;fifthly,it can offer them a profound background of humanism and social sciences.There are some obvious problems in the Chinese journalism education.Firstly,training of professional skills has to be strengthened.The current training education cannot prepare students to handle the practical work in a short time.Secondly,the journalism education lacks hardware,which means that it is difficult for students to command the professional skills.Thirdly,education of theory and practice is somehow disjointed.In order to solve these problems,universities have to collaborate with the media,while the media can participate in journalism education,too.If allowed,universities can even cultivate journalists for the media with certain direction.
