Abstract:We consider the liquid-vapor type phase transition for fluids confined within spatially periodic external fields. For a fluid in d=3 dimensions, the periodic field induces an additional phase, characterized by large density modulations along the field direction. At the triple point, all three phases (modulated, vapor, and liquid) coexist. At temperatures slightly above the triple point and for low (high) values of the chemical potential, two-phase coexistence between the modulated phase and the vapor (liquid) is observed. We study this phenomenon using computer simulations and mean-field theory for the Ising model. The theory shows that, in order for the modulated phase to arise, the field wavelength must exceed a threshold value. We also find an extremely low tension of the interface between the modulated phase and the vapor/liquid phases. The tension is of the order 10^{-4} kB T per squared lattice spacing, where kB is the Boltzmann constant, and T the temperature. In order to detect such low tensions, a new simulation method is proposed. We also consider the case of d=2 dimensions. The modulated phase then does not survive, leading to a radically different phase diagram.

Abstract:The determination of phase behavior and, in particular, the nature of phase transitions in two-dimensional systems is often clouded by finite size effects and by access to the appropriate thermodynamic regime. We address these issues using an alternative route to deriving the equation of state of a two-dimensional hard-core particle system, based on kinetic arguments and the Gibbs adsorption isotherm, by use of the random sequential adsorption with surface diffusion (RSAD) model. Insight into coexistence regions and phase transitions is obtained through direct visualization of the system at any fractional surface coverage via local bond orientation order. The analysis of the bond orientation correlation function for each individual configuration confirms that first-order phase transition occurs in a two-step liquid-hexatic-solid transition at high surface coverage.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are phases of matter intermediate between crystals and liquids. Whereas classical liquid crystals have been known for a long time and are used in electro-optical displays, much less is known about their quantum counterparts. There is growing evidence that quantum liquid crystals play a central role in many electron systems including high temperature superconductors, but a quantitative understanding is lacking due to disorder and other complications. Here, we analyse the quantum phase diagram of a two-dimensional dipolar gas, which exhibits stripe, nematic and supersolid phases. We calculate the stiffness constants determining the stability of the nematic and stripe phases, and the melting of the stripes set by the proliferation of topological defects is analysed microscopically. Our results for the critical temperatures of these phases demonstrate that a controlled study of the interplay between quantum liquid and superfluid phases is within experimental reach for the first time, using dipolar gases.

Two-dimension to three-dimension transition of chiral spin liquid and fractional quantum Hall phases

Abstract:There have been lots of interest in two-dimensional (2D) fractional phases with an emergent U (1) gauge field. However, many experimental realizations are actually in three-dimensional (3D) systems with infinitely stacked 2D layers. Then a natural question arises: starting from the decoupling limit with 2+1d U (1) gauge field in each layer, how does the gauge field become 3+1d when increasing inter-layer coupling? Here we propose a 2D to 3D transition through condensing inter-layer exciton. The Goldstone mode of the condensation becomes the missing az component in the 3D phase. As a simple example, we construct a 3D chiral spin liquid (CSL) from infinitely stacked 2D CSL. The 3D CSL has a gapless photon mode with dispersion $\omega \sim q_z^2$ in the z-direction. The same theory also applies to the fractional quantum Hall phase. At the 2D to the 3D transition point, there are gapless modes at each $q_z$ along a line $q = (0,0,q_z)$ in momentum space, in contrast to a conventional critical point with gapless mode only at one momentum. Meanwhile, the scaling dimension $\Delta (q_z)$ has $q_z$ dependence, indicating a more non-trivial structure than a simple decoupled fixed point. Our theory can also be generalized to a critical point between a generic infinite component Chern-Simons-Maxwell theory (iCSM) with both intra-layer and inter-layer Chern Simons term and a 3D gapless phase. Certain iCSM theories have recently been shown to describe gapped non-foliated fracton orders. Therefore we have a continuous transition between a gapped fracton order and a 3D gapless phase.

Abstract:Thermodynamic properties and mechanisms of phase transitions in the two-dimensional Lennard-Jones System are studied by Monte Carlo method. Canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulations are performed for a wide range of thermodynamic equilibrium states. Simulation results along the sub-critical isotherm show characteristics of a smooth small system loop in the gas/liquid phase transition region, which is similar to the known loop-like isotherm in the solid/liquid phase transition region. A first-order gas/liquid phase transition is strongly suggested, similar to the first-order solid/liquid phase transition. Therefore, both the gas/liquid transition and the solid/liquid transition can be described by a self-consistent first-order phase transition.

Abstract:Quantum liquid, in the form of a self-bound droplet, is stabilized by a subtle balance between the mean-field contribution and quantum fluctuations. While a liquid-gas transition is expected when such a balance is broken, it remains elusive whether liquid-gas critical points exist in the quantum regime. Here, we study the quantum criticality in a binary Bose mixture undergoing the liquid-gas transition. We show that, beyond a narrow stability window of the self-bound liquid, a liquid-gas coexistence persists, which eventually transits into a homogeneous mixture. Importantly, we identify two distinct critical points where the liquid-gas coexistence terminates. These critical points are characterized by rich critical behaviors in their vicinity, including divergent susceptibility, unique phonon-mode softening, and enhanced density correlations. The liquid-gas transition and the critical points can be readily explored in ultracold atoms confined to a box potential. Our work highlights the thermodynamic approach as a powerful tool in revealing the quantum liquid-gas criticality, and paves the way for further studies of critical phenomena in quantum liquids.

Abstract:To study the possibility of a fluid-fluid phase transition, we analyze a three-dimensional soft-core isotropic potential for a one-component system. We utilize two independent numerical approaches, (i) integral equation in the hypernetted-chain approximation and (ii) molecular dynamics simulations, and find for both approaches a fluid-fluid phase transition as well as the conventional gas-liquid critical point. We also study the possible existence of a triple point in the supercooled fluid phase at which three phases---gas, high-density fluid, and low-density fluid---coexist.

Heterophase fluctuations at the gas-liquid phase transition

Abstract:The problem of the gas-liquid heterophase fluctuations of a fluid within the critical and supercritical regions is revisited. To describe the thermodynamics and structure of the heterophase fluid, the mesoscopic equation of state is deduced. The mesoscopic scale is connected with the sizes of the mixed bubbles and droplets (g-fluctuons and l-fluctuons). The two-component order parameter of the heterophase fluid describes the gas-like and liquid-like fractions. Its interconnection with the van der Waals order parameter is ascertained. The non-symmetric Ising-type equation of state of the heterophase fluid is analyzed using the standard methods. The manifestations of the mesoscopic effects in the structural and thermodynamic properties of the fluid are investigated. The domain of applicability of a classical model is found using the mesoscopic Ornstein-Zernike equation. The asymmetry and non-analyticity of the diameter of the phase coexistence curve is researched. It is shown that that the critical non-analyticity of the diameter is induced by the mesoscopic heterophase fluctuations. The percolation thresholds of the droplets and bubbles in the critical and supercritical fluid are determined. On the phase diagrams they bound the domains of applicability of the droplet model.

Liquid-Gas Phase Transitions and $\mathcal{CK}$ Symmetry in Quantum Field Theories

Abstract:A general field-theoretic framework for the treatment of liquid-gas phase transitions is developed. Starting from a fundamental four-dimensional field theory at nonzero temperature and density, an effective three-dimensional field theory with a sign problem is derived. Although charge conjugation $\mathcal{C}$ is broken at finite density, there remains a symmetry under $\mathcal{CK}$, where $\mathcal{K}$ is complex conjugation. We consider four models: relativistic fermions, nonrelativistic fermions, static fermions and classical particles. The thermodynamic behavior is extracted from $\mathcal{CK}$-symmetric complex saddle points of the effective field theory at tree level. The relativistic and static fermions show a liquid-gas transition, manifesting as a first-order line at low temperature and high density, terminated by a critical end point. In the cases of nonrelativistic fermions and classical particles, we find no first-order liquid-gas transitions at tree level. The mass matrix controlling the behavior of correlation functions is obtained from fluctuations around the saddle points. Due to the $\mathcal{CK}$ symmetry of the models, the eigenvalues of the mass matrix can be complex. This leads to the existence of disorder lines, which mark the boundaries where the eigenvalues go from purely real to complex. The regions where the mass matrix eigenvalues are complex are associated with the critical line. In the case of static fermions, a powerful duality between particles and holes allows for the analytic determination of both the critical line and the disorder lines. Depending on the values of the parameters, either zero, one or two disorder lines are found. Numerical results for relativistic fermions give a very similar picture.

Generalized Sine-Gordon Model for Coupled Condensates and Phase Transition

Abstract:Motivated by the realization of coupled Luttinger liquids in a split condensate for quantum sine-Gordon (SG) model [Haller et al., Nature 466, 597 (2010); Schweiglet et al., Nature 545, 323 (2017); Nat. Phys. 17, 559 (2021)], here we study the phase transition in coupled condensates using the bosonization method. We show that when these condensates have different velocities ui and Luttinger parameters Ki, the physics is described by a generalized SG model, which is also exactly solvable. We use various approaches, including the Wilson renormalization group, correlation function, variational wave function, and the equivalent Coulomb gas methods, demonstrating the phase transition at 2 = 1/(4K1) + 1/(4K2). The physical meaning of this boundary is explained by the density-phase uncertainty principle, showing how the many-body interactions drive the coupled condensates from two gapless phases to one gapless phase. The relative phase between the condensates may fundamentally affect the band structure, yet it will not affect this boundary. Furthermore, we also discuss the relevance of our result in the two-dimensional models for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, from which the physical meaning of this boundary is self-evident. Our results can be used to study the phase transitions in one-dimensional coupled models with Fermions and Bosons, and even the Kane-Fisher model with impurities, and study their phase transitions, non-Gaussian dynamics, and thermalization, which may be of great interest in quantum simulation.

Abstract:The study of liquid-liquid phase transitions has attracted considerable attention. One interesting example of this phenomenon is phosphorus, for which the existence of a first-order phase transition between a low density insulating molecular phase and a conducting polymeric phase has been experimentally established. In this Letter, we model this transition by an ab initio quality molecular dynamics simulation and explore a large portion of the liquid section of the phase diagram. We draw the liquid-liquid coexistence curve and determine that it terminates into a second-order critical point. Close to the critical point, large coupled structure and electronic structure fluctuations are observed.

Abstract:The quantum Hall liquid-Wigner solid phase boundary as a function of filling factor, density (Landau-level mixing) and temperature displays a rich variety of phenomena. More importantly the density and temperature range where these phenomena could take place are in an experimentally accessible regime. This is particularly true because of the availability of hole samples.We will present results of variational Monte Carlo calculations on the ground-state energy of the liquid and solid. Assuming the transition is first-order, we predict the density-dependent phase boundary at T = 0 for the basic filling factors nu = 1/3, 1/5, 1/7, and 1/9. At finite temperatures, treating the excitation spectrum as phonons for the solid and magnetorotons for the liquid, we can calculate the low-temperature properties of the phase boundary. Because the entropy of the solid coming from the low-lying shear modes is large compared to the entropy of the liquid, i.e. there is a gap in the excitation spectrum, we find an interesting regime where the liquid freezes as the temperature is raised. This quantum freezing is analogous to the behavior near the minimum in the melting of the solid helium-superfluid helium boundary.

Abstract:We study the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition on the basis of a two-component lattice gas model. A Metropolis type of sampling method is used to generate microscopic states in the canonical ensemble. The effective equation of state and fragment mass distributions are evaluated in a wide range of temperatures and densities. A definition of the phase coexistence region appropriate for mesoscopic systems is proposed. The caloric curve resulting from different types of freeze-out conditions are presented.

Abstract:Liquids with quasi - chemical bonding between molecules are described in terms of vertex model. It is shown that this bonding results in liquid - liquid phase transition, which occurs between phases with different mean density of intermolecular bonds. The transition may be suggested to be a universal phenomena for those liquids.

Abstract:Atomic many-body phase transitions and quantum criticality have recently attracted much attention in non-standard optical lattices. Here we perform an experimental study of finite temperature superfluid transition of bosonic atoms confined in a three dimensional triangular lattice, whose structure can be continuously deformed to dimensional crossover regions including quasi-one and two dimensions. This non-standard lattice system provides a versatile platform to investigate many-body correlated phases. For the three dimensional case, we find that the finite temperature superfluid transition agrees quantitatively with the Gutzwiller mean field theory prediction, whereas tuning towards reduced dimensional cases, both quantum and thermal fluctuation effects are more dramatic, and the experimental measurement for the critical point becomes strongly deviated from the mean field theory. We characterize the fluctuation effects in the whole dimension crossover process. Our experimental results imply strong many-body correlations in the system beyond mean field description, paving a way to study quantum criticality near Mott-superfluid transition in finite temperature dimension-crossover lattices.

Abstract:We investigate the ground-state properties of the quasi-one-dimensional dipolar gases using continuous matrix product states techniques. Making use of the first- and second-order correlation functions, we find that the system supports the superfluid, super-Tonks-Girardeau, and quasicrystal phases according to the Luttinger liquid theory. We also map out the phase diagram on the parameter plane consisting the contact and dipolar interaction strengths. Furthermore, we compute the Luttinger parameter, the structure factor, and the momentum distribution of the system. Finally, we show that the predicted dipolar effect can potentially be observed in quasi-one-dimensional gases of polar molecules.

Critical properties of metallic and deconfined quantum phase transitions in Dirac systems

Abstract:We characterize, by means of large-scale fermion quantum Monte Carlo simulations, metallic and deconfined quantum phase transitions in a bilayer honeycomb model in terms of their quantum critical and finite-temperature properties.The model features three different phases at zero temperature as function of interaction strength. At weak interaction, a fully symmetric Dirac semimetal state is realized. At intermediate and strong interaction, respectively, two long-range-ordered phases that break different symmetries are stabilized. The ordered phases feature partial and full, respectively, gap openings in the fermion spectrum. The first transition between the disordered and long-range-ordered semimetallic phases has previously been argued to be described by the $(2+1)$-dimensional Gross-Neveu-SO(3) field theory. By performing simulations with an improved symmetric Trotter decomposition, we further substantiate this claim by computing the critical exponents $1/\nu$, $\eta_\phi$, and $\eta_\psi$, which turn out to be consistent with the field-theoretical expectation within numerical and analytical uncertainties. The second transition between the two long-range-ordered phases has previously been proposed as a possible instance of a metallic deconfined quantum critical point. We further develop this scenario by analyzing the spectral functions in the single-particle, particle-hole, and particle-particle channels. Our results indicate gapless excitations with a unique velocity, supporting the emergence of Lorentz symmetry at criticality. We also compute the finite-temperature phase boundaries of the ordered states above the fully gapped state at large interaction. The phase boundaries vanishes smoothly in the vicinity of the putative metallic deconfined quantum critical point, in agreement with the expectation for a continuous or weakly-first-order transition.
