Abstract:The problem of the gas-liquid heterophase fluctuations of a fluid within the critical and supercritical regions is revisited. To describe the thermodynamics and structure of the heterophase fluid, the mesoscopic equation of state is deduced. The mesoscopic scale is connected with the sizes of the mixed bubbles and droplets (g-fluctuons and l-fluctuons). The two-component order parameter of the heterophase fluid describes the gas-like and liquid-like fractions. Its interconnection with the van der Waals order parameter is ascertained. The non-symmetric Ising-type equation of state of the heterophase fluid is analyzed using the standard methods. The manifestations of the mesoscopic effects in the structural and thermodynamic properties of the fluid are investigated. The domain of applicability of a classical model is found using the mesoscopic Ornstein-Zernike equation. The asymmetry and non-analyticity of the diameter of the phase coexistence curve is researched. It is shown that that the critical non-analyticity of the diameter is induced by the mesoscopic heterophase fluctuations. The percolation thresholds of the droplets and bubbles in the critical and supercritical fluid are determined. On the phase diagrams they bound the domains of applicability of the droplet model.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the influence of heterophase fluctuations (HPF) on the thermodynamic and structural properties of fluids in the critical and supercritical regions during the gas - liquid phase transition. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Description of heterophase fluctuations**: The paper re - examines the gas - liquid heterophase fluctuation problem of fluids in the critical and supercritical regions and derives the mesoscopic equation of state for describing heterophase fluids. These fluctuations are related to the size of mixed bubbles and droplets (g - fluctuons and l - fluctuons). 2. **Two - component order parameter**: A two - component order parameter is introduced to describe the gaseous and liquid parts in heterophase fluids and its relationship with the van der Waals order parameter is determined. 3. **Asymmetric Ising - type equation of state**: The asymmetric Ising - type equation of state of heterophase fluids is analyzed, and the manifestation of mesoscopic effects in the fluid structure and thermodynamic properties is studied using standard methods. 4. **Applicable range of classical models**: The applicable range of classical models is determined through the mesoscopic Ornstein - Zernike equation. 5. **Asymmetry and non - analyticity of the diameter of the phase coexistence curve**: The asymmetry and non - analyticity of the diameter of the phase coexistence curve are studied, and it is pointed out that this non - analyticity is caused by mesoscopic heterophase fluctuations. 6. **Percolation threshold of bubbles and droplets in critical and supercritical fluids**: The percolation threshold of bubbles and droplets in critical and supercritical fluids is determined, and the applicable domain of the droplet model is demarcated on the phase diagram. ### Main contributions of the paper - **Development of theoretical models**: A theoretical model capable of describing the effect of heterophase fluctuations in the critical region is proposed, which goes beyond the traditional droplet model. - **Introduction of mesoscopic parameters**: Mesoscopic parameters are introduced to describe the "pseudo - correlation" phenomenon in van der Waals theory, and these parameters play an important role in the improved critical point theory. - **Description of heterophase states**: The heterophase states of fluids in the critical region are described in detail, emphasizing that the interaction between heterophase fluctuations cannot be ignored. - **Consistency with experimental data**: Inconsistencies in experimental data are explained through the theoretical model, especially the asymmetry and non - analyticity near the critical point. ### Conclusion Through in - depth research on heterophase fluctuations, the paper not only enriches the understanding of the gas - liquid critical point but also provides a theoretical basis for further research in related fields.
