Abstract:When synthetic materials are submerged in marine environments, dissolved matter and marine organisms attach to their surfaces by a process known as marine fouling. This phenomenon may lead to diminished material performance with detrimental consequences. Bioinspired surface patterning and chemical surface modifications present promising approaches to the design of novel functional surfaces that can prevent biofouling phenomena. In this study, we report the synergistic effects of surface patterns, inspired by the marine decapod crab Myomenippe hardwickii in combination with chemical surface modifications toward suppressing marine fouling. M. hardwickii is known to maintain a relatively clean carapace although the species occurs in biofouling communities of tropical shallow subtidal coastal waters. Following the surface analysis of selected specimens, we designed hierarchical surface microtopographies that replicate the critical features observed on the crustacean surface. The micropatterned surfaces were modified with zwitterionic polymer brushes or with layer-by-layer deposited polyelectrolyte multilayers to enhance their antifouling and/or fouling-release potential. Chemically modified and unmodified micropatterned surfaces were subjected to extensive fouling tests, including laboratory assays against barnacle settlement and algae adhesion, and field static immersion tests. The results show a statistically significant reduction in settlement on the micropatterned surfaces as well as a synergistic effect when the microtopographies are combined with grafted polymer chains.

Abstract:<p>Marine biofouling is a ubiquitous and longstanding challenge that causes both economic and environmental problems. To address this, several antifouling strategies have been proposed, such as the release of biocidal compounds or surface chemical/physical design. Here we report a coating with surface structures (chemical heterogeneity) triggered by phase segregation, which endues the good antifouling properties, alongside robust mechanical properties, low underwater oil adhesion, and excellent optical transparency. This is achieved by arranging the hydrophobic and hydrophilic components to control the assembly and phase separation under the cross-linking and localized swelling process. The structure designs are based on the poly(ethylene glycols) (PEG), zwitterions, and hydrophobic components, which may lower the entropic and enthalpic driving forces for the adsorption of the marine organisms. Our approach could provide an effective way of manufacturing novel coating with amphiphilic micro/nanodomains structure, particularly for the marine industry. And we also showed that the coatings were stable under different temperatures and shear environments. To illustrate the applicability of such a robust coating in marine biofouling, we demonstrated significantly reduced algal adhesion and barnacle attachment in the sea (p<0.01). We envision that this work will provide great potential for the application in antifouling marine coatings.</p>

Abstract:We prepared hybrid antifouling coatings with a self-generated topographical microgel surface by mixing small surface-functionalized microgels with a self-peeling resin and a poly-functional cross-linking agent (axiridine). The microgels were prepared by copolymerizing acrylamide (AAm) and methacrylic acid (MAA). The resin is a random terpolymer made of methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylic acid (AA) and triisopropylsilyl methacrylate (TIPSM). During the coating process, the microgels and terpolymer chains are cross-linked together to form a hard thin film. After it is immersed into sea water, the microgels dispersed and embedded on the film surface are swollen, generating small and soft bumps, and at the same time, the hydrolysis of TIPSM makes the surface layer hydrophilic, forming a thin layer of soft hydrogel. A combination of these two effects leads to a soft and dynamic topographical surface layer with many well-structured microgel bumps. Such a soft and dynamic surface is self-generating; namely, the hydrolysis of TIPSM eventually makes the terpolymer chains on the surface soluble so that a thin layer of them is gradually dissolved and washed away and the inner layer is further exposed to sea water. Here, both the self-peeling and topographically structured surface by small microgel bumps lead to antifouling properties. To test such a novel idea, we prepared a set of coatings with different microgel and TIPSM contents and evaluated their antifouling properties in a real marine environment. We found some optimal composition at which the coatings showed excellent antifouling properties in the field tests. Moreover, adding the microgels reduces the amount of expensive TIPSM required so that the coatings become more cost-effective, which is vitally important for industrial applications.

Abstract:There are a large number of fouling organisms in the ocean, which easily attach to the surface of ships, oil platforms and breeding facilities, corrode the surface of equipment, accelerate the aging of equipment, affect the stability and safety of marine facilities and cause serious economic losses. Antifouling coating is an effective method to prevent marine biological fouling. Traditional organic tin and copper oxide coatings are toxic and will contaminate seawater and destroy marine ecology and have been banned or restricted. Environmentally friendly antifouling coatings have become a research hotspot. Among them, the use of natural biological products with antifouling activity as antifouling agents is an important research direction. In addition, some fouling release coatings without antifoulants, biomimetic coatings, photocatalytic coatings and other novel antifouling coatings have also developed rapidly. On the basis of revealing the mechanism of marine biofouling, this paper reviews the latest research strategies to develop environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings. The composition, antifouling characteristics, antifouling mechanism and effects of various coatings were analyzed emphatically. Finally, the development prospects and future development directions of marine antifouling coatings are forecasted.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industries, the issue of pollution on Earth has become increasingly severe. This has led to the deterioration of various surfaces, rendering them ineffective for their intended purposes. Examples of such surfaces include oil rigs, seawater intakes, and more. A variety of functional surface techniques have been created to address these issues, including superwetting surfaces, antifouling coatings, nano-polymer composite materials, etc. They primarily exploit the membrane's surface properties and hydration layer to improve the antifouling property. In recent years, biomimetic superwetting surfaces with non-toxic and environmental characteristics have garnered massive attention, greatly aiding in solving the problem of pollution. In this work, a detailed presentation of antifouling superwetting materials was made, including superhydrophobic surface, superhydrophilic surface, and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surface, along with the antifouling mechanisms. Then, the applications of the superwetting antifouling materials in antifouling domain were addressed in depth.

Abstract:With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, it is necessary to develop natural product extracts as antifouling (AF) agents for alternatives to toxic biocides or metal-based AF paints to control biofouling. This paper briefly summarizes the latest developments in the natural product extracts and their derivatives or analogues from marine microorganisms to terrestrial plants as AF agents in the last five years. Moreover, this paper discusses the structures–activity relationship of these AF compounds and expands their AF mechanisms. Inspired by the molecular structure of natural products, some derivatives or analogues of natural product extracts and some novel strategies for improving the AF activity of protective coatings have been proposed as guidance for the development of a new generation of environmentally friendly AF agents.

Abstract:The shipping industry is vital to global trade. Unfortunately, this industry is negatively impacted on a large scale by biofouling, a process whereby unwanted organisms accumulate on submerged surfaces, massively affecting traveling speed and fuel consumption. Fortunately, antifouling coatings have been developed to combat this problem. This review summarizes the process of biofouling and briefly discusses the history of antifouling coating development. Moreover, eight major antifouling coatings are reviewed, including bionic microstructure, self-polishing, fouling and desorption, zwitterionic polymer, self-assembled thin-layer, liquid-smooth surface, conductive, and photocatalytic antifouling coatings. The technical principles, innovation, and advancement of each coating are expounded, and the relevant research progress is discussed. Finally, the remaining issues and challenges in antifouling coatings are discussed, along with their prospects.

Abstract:A kind of highefficient,low surface energy and nontoxic antifouling coating is summarized,and capsaicin and PTFE are used as main antifouling composition.Maritime space test began with April of 2002.Antifouling materials are hung up between net cases in the test maritime space of Zhoushan in Zhejiang province.The depth of antifouling materials is lower than the sea by 2-3 meters.Interval distance is about 1.5 meters.Once a month antifouling materials are checked on the degree of adhesion,weighed and taken pictures.The result of test proves that the kind of antifouling paint has made the satisfactory antifouling result.

Abstract:Marine biofouling has negatively affected human sailing since ancient times. Traditional antifouling coatings were banned worldwide in 2003 due to their toxicity towards nontarget marine organisms. Consequently, the development of sustainable nontoxic antifouling coatings is urgent. Novel and exciting discoveries from nature have inspired us to design high-efficiency, environmentally compatible, and cost-effective antifouling coatings. This review focuses on six major bioinspired antifouling strategies: micro/nanostructured surfaces, natural antifoulants, bioinspired hydrogels, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces, bioinspired dynamic surfaces, and zwitterionic coatings. This review provides insight into antifouling mechanisms, fabrication methods, and critical issues in the development of the six bioinspired antifouling strategies. This review also discusses current problems and future trends of bioinspired antifouling coatings. In practical applications, no single bioinspired antifouling approach can be identified as a universal antifouling strategy. This review introduces the multifunctional bioinspired antifouling strategy—a recent development that may address the existing problems in the single bioinspired strategy. The multifunctional strategy combines the synergistic strengths of multiple antifouling strategies, potentially enhancing the antifouling capabilities and lifespan of the coatings. This review may open a new horizon for the future development of bioinspired marine antifouling coatings.

Abstract:Abstract Marine fouling is a worldwide problem, which is harmful to the global marine ecological environment and economic benefits. The traditional antifouling strategy usually uses toxic antifouling agents, which gradually exposes a serious environmental problem. Therefore, green, long-term, broad-spectrum and eco-friendly antifouling technologies have been the main target of engineers and researchers. In recent years, many eco-friendly antifouling technologies with broad application prospects have been developed based on the low toxicity and non-toxicity antifouling agents and materials. In this review, contemporary eco-friendly antifouling technologies and materials are summarized into bionic antifouling and non-bionic antifouling strategies (2000–2020). Non-bionic antifouling technologies mainly include protein resistant polymers, antifoulant releasing coatings, foul release coatings, conductive antifouling coatings and photodynamic antifouling technology. Bionic antifouling technologies mainly include the simulated shark skin, whale skin, dolphin skin, coral tentacles, lotus leaves and other biology structures. Brief future research directions and challenges are also discussed in the end, and we expect that this review would boost the development of marine antifouling technologies.

Abstract:The surfaces of marine engineering equipment immersed in the sea are inevitably inhabited by various marine organisms, which causes severe economic and environmental problems. Therefore, it is extremely critical to take effective measures to prevent surface biofouling. Using antifouling coatings is the most effective and promising method for their convenience and low cost compared with others. Since 17th century, marine antifouling coatings were designed to kill or repel organisms by releasing toxic metal ions, causing serious hazards to marine environment. As a result, it is of significant need to develop environmentally friendly coatings. Intelligent coatings, triggered from their surrounding environment, has garnered increasing attention due to releasing little pollutants. Among the available external stimuli such as temperature, light, pH, and others, light has excellent characteristics such as environmental protection, great controllability, and immediacy. Hence, photo-responsive coatings have become a current research hotspot. This work summarized the fabrications, mechanisms and developments of photo-responsive coatings in marine antifouling based on organic, inorganic and organic/inorganic coatings, providing a systematic, innovative and enlightening toolkit for readers.
Preparation and Study of Antifouling and Fouling-Release Surface Materials from Copolymers with Anchoring Functional Groups

Abstract:Marine biofouling is a worldwide problem in marine systems. Nowadays, innovative non-toxic antifouling and fouling-release materials are highly desirable. In this study, a strategy for preparing antifouling and fouling-release materials via one-step dip coating is reported. Copolymers were synthesized via the polymerization of a monomer with catechol sticky functional groups and four monomers with antifouling- or fouling-release functional groups, respectively. The copolymers could assemble onto different material surfaces, such as metals and plastics, using biomimetic catechol groups via multivalent complex bonding. The catechol groups were helpful for adhesion onto the surfaces, while the other functional groups endowed the coatings with antifouling or fouling-release properties. The effects of modifying the substrates using these copolymer coatings were verified via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; images of Chlorella cell and Ulva zoospore settlement were taken using a microscope and scanning electron microscope. The copolymer-coated surfaces, especially the surface modified by DOPA–PSPMA, displayed the best antifouling activity, and surface modification via DOPA–PTMETH was shown to be the most effective for producing the fouling-release property in the settlement assay.

Abstract:Organic coatings for marine applications must have great corrosion protection and antifouling performance. This review presents an overview of recent investigations into coating microstructure, corrosion protection performance, antifouling behavior, and evaluation methods, particularly the substrate effect and environmental influence on coating protectiveness, aiming to improve operational practice in the coating industry. The review indicates that the presence of defects in an organic coating is the root cause of the corrosion damage of the coating. The protection performance of a coating system can be enhanced by proper treatment of the substrate and physical modification of the coating. Environmental factors may synergistically accelerate the coating degradation. The long-term protection performance of a coating system is extremely difficult to predict without coating defect information. Non-fouling coating and self-repairing coatings may be promising antifouling approaches. Based on the review, some important research topics are suggested, such as the exploration of rapid evaluation methods, the development of long-term cost-effective antifouling coatings in real marine environments.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the mainstay of therapy for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). However, compliance with CPAP has been less than ideal. There are many different CPAP interfaces now available for the treatment of OSA. The type of CPAP delivery interface is likely to influence a patient's acceptance of CPAP therapy and long term compliance. OBJECTIVES This review aims to compare the efficacy of the various CPAP delivery interfaces available for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea. SEARCH STRATEGY Searches were carried out on the Cochrane Airways Group Specialised Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE & CINAHL up to January 2006. SELECTION CRITERIA All randomised, controlled trials comparing different forms of CPAP delivery interface for the treatment of OSA were considered for inclusion. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two reviewers independently assessed studies for inclusion into the review and extracted data. Attempts were made to contact study authors to obtain additional, unpublished data. MAIN RESULTS A total of four studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Two studies compared nasal mask with the Oracle oral mask and showed no significant difference in compliance at one month (mean difference [95%CI]: 0.17 hours per night [-0.54 to 0.87]). There were also no significant differences in any of the physiological parameters (e.g. AHI, arousal index, minimum oxygen saturation), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), or symptoms of OSA. A single study comparing nasal mask with nasal pillows showed a significant difference in compliance when expressed as the percentage of days used in favour of nasal pillows (nasal pillows mean+/-SD 94.1+/-8.3%; nasal mask 85.7+/-23.5%, P=0.02), however there were no significant differences in the mean daily use for all days or when use was greater than 0 minutes per day. Nasal pillows were also associated with fewer overall adverse effects (P<0.001) and greater interface satisfaction (P=0.001). No significant differences in AHI, ESS or quality of life scores were seen. One study comparing nasal mask with face mask showed that compliance was significantly greater with use of a nasal mask (mean difference 1.0 hour per night [95%CI 0.3-1.8]). Nasal mask was also associated with significantly lower ESS scores and was the preferred interface in almost all patients. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Due to the limited number of studies available comparing various interface types, the optimum form of CPAP delivery interface remains unclear. The results of our review suggest that nasal pillows or the Oracle oral mask may be useful alternatives when a patient is unable to tolerate conventional nasal masks. The face mask can not be recommended as a first line interface, but may be considered if nasal obstruction or dryness limits the use of a nasal mask. Further randomised studies comparing the different forms of CPAP delivery interface now available for the treatment of OSA, in larger groups of patients and for longer durations, are required.

Abstract:The adhesion of marine organisms to marine facilities negatively impacts human productivity. This phenomenon, known as marine fouling, constitutes a serious issue in the marine equipment industry. It increases resistance for ships and their structures, which, in turn, raises fuel consumption and reduces ship speed. To date, numerous antifouling strategies have been researched to combat marine biofouling. However, a multitude of these resources face long-term usability issues due to various limitations, such as low adhesion quality, elevated costs, and inefficacy. Hydrogels, exhibiting properties akin to the slime layer on the skin of many aquatic creatures, possess a low frictional coefficient and a high rate of water absorbency and are extensively utilized in the marine antifouling field. This review discusses the recent progress regarding the application of hydrogels as an important marine antifouling material in recent years. It introduces the structure, properties, and classification of hydrogels; summarizes the current research status of improved hydrogels in detail; and analyzes the improvement in their antifouling properties and the prospects for their application in marine antifouling.

Study on a New Silicone Marine Anti-fouling Coatings

Abstract:The silicone resin marine anti-fouling coating was prepared by using NaPT as the marine anti-fouling agents and silicone resin as the basic material.The morphological structure of silicone resin coating was investigated under SEM,and its static water contact angle of the coatings was tested.The result proved that the static water contact angle of coatings did not change too much when NaPT was added.This indicated that NaPT molecules were entrapped inside the bulk of the polymer matrix rather than aggregating on the surface,with little effects on the low surface energy properties.The estimated cumulative NaPT was obtained by measuring the electrical conductivity of the solution by standard curve method.It was found that there was no sudden release happened.Anti-fouling nets were hung between net cases in the test maritime space according to GB/T 5370-1985,test methods for anti-fouling paints model in shallow water.Month by month observation on the type,quantity and the propagation of marine fouling organisms were recorded and compared with a blank sample at the same time.It was observed the area ratio of fishnet coated with anti-adhesion coating was lower significantly than the comparison sample,showing excellent anti-fouling properties;and not barnacles and other large attachment of fouling organisms was found as well on the anti-fouling coated nets.

Abstract:Inspired by the "Lotus Leaf Effect" in nature, the phenomenon of superhydrophobia has attracted tremendous attention from researchers. Due to their special surface wettability, the superhydrophobic surfaces have been found to have broad potential applications in the fields of marine engineering, medical equipment, and aerospace. Based on the introduction of the principles of wettability, the advantages and disadvantages of various preparation methods for superhydrophobic surfaces were studied and summarized in this paper. The research progress on superhydrophobic surfaces in marine engineering applications was analyzed according to their self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, heat transfer, drag reduction, anti-fouling, ant-icing, and oil/water separation properties. Abstract:The corrosion caused by marine organisms adhering to the wall surface is one of the main reasons for the failure of ships and equipment, and leads to shortened life and increased maintenance costs, and this has seriously affected the development of the national economy. Therefore, it is very important to develop a new composite material to protect the metal substrate from biological corrosion. In this article, a superhydrophobic surface was prepared by simply spraying silicone rubber emulsion containing hydrophobic SiO 2 nanoparticles onto a graphene silicone rubber (GSR) pre-coated substrate (SiO 2 -GSR). The antifouling ability was investigated under laboratory conditions and real marine environments, and the results show that the SiO 2 -GSR coating has good antiadhesion effect and longer antifouling ability. The anticorrosion performance was evaluated by electrochemistry methods, and the SiO 2 -GSR has good corrosion resistance ability. Additionally, the SiO 2 -GSR film still exhibited a strong antifouling and anticorrosion ability after immersed in marine environment for 6 months. Therefore, SiO 2 -GSR can be applied to the maritime field as an effective antifouling and anticorrosion coating.
