Abstract:With the advocating of “Green ship”, hybrid CRP podded propulsion system is increasingly becoming a hot topic. This new propulsion system inherits merits of contra-rotating propellers and podded propeller. Firstly it matains good maneuverability of podded propeller and decreases carbon emission since its rear podded propeller is driven by electricity. Secondly the rear podded propeller can drastically recover energy wasted by the front propeller in its wake flow field, thus will obtain superior propulsion efficiency and diminish carbon emission again. Thirdly the pressure magnitude suffered by the front propeller which works as the main propeller decreases dramatically, therefore, the hybrid CRP podded propulsion system can relieve undesired cavitating and vibrating level compared with sole propeller . In this paper, the hybrid system is composed of a contra-rotating propellers (CRPs) which was developed by David W Taylor Naval Ship R&D Center, and a streamlined pod. The front propeller is named DTMB3686 and the rear named DTMB3687. Beside detailed experimental data, this type of CRPs has also been investigated numerically all over the word. Based on CFD method with RANS function, k-omega sst turbulence model and sliding mesh method, the hybrid CRP podded propulsion system is simulated at different inlet velocity coefficients. Results show that hybrid CRP podded propulsion system has quite different open water performance compared with sole propeller and podded propeller. Wake flow field information such as velocity distribution and vorticity structure reflect complex interactions among front propeller, rear propeller and pod. Furthermore some crucial design parameters such as distance and power ratio between front and rear propellers are also investigated in order to find the energy saving mechanism which will help us increase propulsion efficiency of hybrid CRP podded propulsion system.
