Abstract:Cadmium selenide hollow structures have been successfully synthesized in a polymer solvent system by γ-irradiation at room temperature. The product is characterized by electron diffraction (ED), transmission electron microscope (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and UV-Vis, respectively. It was found that CdSe hollow structures (with 25–180 nm in pore diameter, 3–7 nm in wall thickness) could be obtained directly in solution and the size of CdSe nanoparticles is about 3 nm. The influence on the size and morphology of the product was also studied.

Abstract:CdSe hollow spherical assemblies composed of 5 nm nanoparticles have been synthesized sonochemically. During the process, amorphous Cd(OH)(2), which acts as the in-situ template, directs the growth of primary CdSe nanoparticles on its surface and their assembly into hollow spherical structures. Abstract:Hollow sphere of CdSe with size of ≈100–200 nm can be templated from anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) vesicles induced by the ultrasonic irradiation. The successful vesicle templating indicated that the outer leaflet of the bilayer is the receptive surface in the controlled growth of CdSe nanoparticles, which provide the unique reactor for the nucleation and mineralization growth of CdSe nanoparticles. The products were characterized by XRD, TEM, and HRTEM techniques. UV–vis spectrum recorded the optical properties of CdSe hollow spheres (2.01 eV), which showed an obvious blue shift relative to the bulk cubic CdSe (1.73 eV). Surfactant molecules (SDS) passivated in the CdSe hollow spheres were completely extracted, as determined by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Systematic studies found that the ultrasound irradiation and concentration of surfactant (SDS) in the system were important factors on the controlled synthesis desired hollow sphere morphologies, and also the temperance have an importance influence on the mineralization and crystallization of the CdSe hollow spheres. Based on the observation on morphological difference of CdSe in different systems, the possible mechanism for the formation of CdSe hollow spheres was discussed.

Abstract:Submicrometer hollow spheres of CdSare produced here (see Figure) in a one-pot in-situ source–template–interface reaction (ISTIR)—thus named because CS2 plays both the role of sulfur source and template and the main reaction region is at the CS2–water interface. Examination of the photoluminescence spectrum of these spheres indicates quantum confinement.

Abstract:Cadmium selenide (CdSe) hollow nanospheres (approximately 40–50 nm) have been successfully synthesized by γ-irradiating polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel template which contains CdCl2 and Na2SeO3 aqueous solution at room temperature. The nanospheres were characterized by energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), field emission scanning electron micrograph (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron micrograph (HRTEM), respectively. EDS showed that nanospheres were composed of Cd and Se (atomic ratio, 1.15:1). A possible formation mechanism of CdSe hollow nanospheres through two-steps was presented.

Abstract:CdS/polystyrene nanocomposite hollow spheres with diameters between 240 and 500 nm were synthesized under ambient conditions by a novel microemulsion method in which the polymerization of styrene and the formation of CdS nanoparticles were initiated by gamma-irradiation. The product was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which show the walls of the hollow spheres are porous and composed of polystyrene containing homogeneously dispersed CdS nanoparticles. The quantum-confined effect of the CdS/polystyrene nanocomposite hollow spheres is confirmed by the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and photoluminescent (PL) spectra. We propose that the walls of these nanocomposite hollow spheres originate from the simultaneous synthesis of polystyrene and CdS nanoparticles at the interface of microemulsion droplets. This novel method is expected to produce various inorganic/polymer nanocomposite hollow spheres with potential applications in the fields of materials science and biotechnology.

Abstract:A facile and efficient ultrasonic-template method has been developed for the fabrication of CdS hollow nanoparticle chains. The structures and morphologies of products were characterized by XRD and TEM. UV–Vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectra recorded the optical properties of CdS hollow nanoparticle chains, which showed obvious blue shift relative to the CdS bulk materials. Abstract:Uniform CdS hollow spheres were synthesized via thiourea reacting with Cd2+ through self-template route. When these spheres adsorbed silver nitrate solution, they in situ transformed to sulfide and formed CdS/Ag2S composite materials. Abstract:CdTe/PEDOT-PSS microspheres were fabricated by seed polymerization.The morphology,structure,optical absorption and emission properties were characterized by using SEM,FT-IR,XPS,UV-Vis and fluorescent spectra.The results suggest that:the CdTe/ PEDOT-PSS hybrids synthesized by seed polymerization exhibit uniform microsphere structure.The absorption spectrum for hybrids is the sum of the two components,and the peak at 550nm in emission spectrum is a result of charge transfer,which indicates the potential application of the microspheres optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Hollow CuInS2 microspheres have been successfully prepared via a simple solution-based route without employing templates and surfactants. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images clearly show the hollow nature of the as-obtained products. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images reveal that the shells of as-prepared CuInS2 microspheres were constructed by nanoparticles or nanoflakes. The specific surface area and pore-size distribution of the obtained product as determined by gas-sorption measurements show that the CuInS2 hollow microspheres exhibit high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and porosity properties. TEM observations of intermediate products at different reaction stages indicate that these hollow CuInS2 microspheres are formed mainly via Ostwald ripening.

Abstract:CdS nanocrystals with a wide variety of shapes including spheres, tetrahedra, and branched and flower-like structures have been conveniently tuned by only changing the amount of trioctylphosphine ( TOP) used in a noninjection synthetic approach, in which CdO and S powder were directly used as reactants in paraffin media. The noninjection approach could be facilely scaled up to tens of grams scale in one batch reaction. The shape-controlled growth mechanism could be explained by the TOP-concentration-dependent nuclei structure and monomer concentration. This is further confirmed by the effects of the amount of oleic acid and the Cd/S ratio on the morphology of the obtained CdS nanocrystals. All the CdS nanocrystal samples with different morphologies exhibit good photocatalytic activity for degradation of dyes. The observed lower photocatalytic activity of the sphere-shaped CdS nanocrystals could be ascribed to the higher PL emission efficiency relative to those with other morphologies, which results in low electron-hole separation efficiency. Our reported preparation approach can satisfy the requirements of industrial production bearing the advantage of low-cost, reproducibility and scalability.

Abstract:A simple approach for the preparation of fluorescent ZnSe nanoparticles directly in the polymer matrix by in-situ synthesis was reported. Highly dispersed small ZnSe quantum dots was prepared by hydrothermal reaction of hyperbranched poly(arylene ether ketone)-Zn(Ac) 2 H 2 O and selenourea in DMF. The hexagonal structures of the ZnSe nanoparticles were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Highly dispersed small spherical ZnSe nanoparticles (1.5–5.5 nm) in the synthesized nanocomposite were imaged by a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. The optical characterization of the nanocomposite was measured using the UV–vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Heat resistance properties of the obtained nanocomposite were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The 5% weight loss temperature of the nanocomposite material reached to 415 °C, which showed the composite material had good thermal properties. These results indicated that the prepared ZnSe-poly(arylene ether ketone) nanocomposite would be a potential candidate for advanced photoelectric device.

Abstract:Formation of solid solutions is a good strategy to acquire materials with special properties and bring forth new type of applications or enhance the performance of currently existing devices. In this study, hollow ZnxCd1-xS nanospheres with different molar ratios were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The products were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It was found that the photocatalysis performance of the as-prepared samples could be enhanced by formation of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. In addition, their photocatalytic activities are dependent on the Zn/Cd molar ratios and nanostructures of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. Hollow Zn0.2Cd0.8S spheres exhibit extremely high photocatalytic activity and good re-usability, and the photocatalytic conversion of RhB reaches as high as 96% after 50 min of irradiation.

Abstract:This paper reports the synthesis of semiconductor ZnSe microspheres composed of nanoparticles via a solvothermal route between the organic molecule selenophene (C4H4 Se) and ZnCl2 without adding any surfactant. The ZnSe microspheres were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), specific surface area measurement, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. A strong and broad blue PL emission at 443 nm in wavelength (similar to 2.79 eV in photon energy) is attributed to the near-band-edge (NBE) emission of ZnSe, while the 530 nm peak is a defect-related (DL) emission. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared ZnSe microspheres was evaluated by photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) dye under ultraviolet (UV) light and visible light irradiation. The degradations of MO reach 94% or 95.1%, close to 100%, in the presence of the as-synthesized ZnSe microspheres or commercial ZnSe powder after 7 or 10 h under UV irradiation, respectively. Meanwhile the degradations of MO reach 94.3% or 60.6% in the presence of the as-synthesized ZnSe microspheres or commercial ZnSe powder after 12 h, respectively. The degradation rate of ZnSe microspheres is twice that of ZnSe commercial powder under UV light irradiation, and three times under visible light irradiation. The degradation process of MO dye on ZnSe microspheres under UV or visible light is also discussed.

Abstract:Without using any templates or surfactants, hierarchical ZnS-In2S3-CuS nanospheres with nanoporous structure are successfully synthesized via a simple and convenient process. The nanospheres are aggregations of densely packed nanoparticles and nanorods. Different to the oriented attachment (OA) mechanism reported in the literature, the formation of these nanorods is believed to follow a lateral OA mechanism (nanoparticles attach along the direction perpendicular to the crystallographic axes with lateral planes as the juncture) based on the experimental data. This process could be a general phenomenon and would provide a new insight into the OA mechanism. A detailed time-resolved TEM kinetic study of the formation of the complex structure is shown. The dipole mechanism and electric field-induced growth are found to be responsible for the final architecture. Photocatalytic activities for water splitting are investigated under visible-light irradiation (lambda>400 nm) and an especially high photocatalytic activity (apparent yield of 22.6% at 420 nm) is achieved by unloaded ZnIn0.25Cu0.02S1.395 prepared at 180 degrees C for 18 h because of their high crystallinity, large pore volume, and the presence of nanorods with special microstructures.

Abstract:Semiconductor CuS hollow spheres by self-assembly coupled with bubble templating through a facile one-step solvothermal route has been demonstrated. An energy-minimizing-driven self-assembly of CuS nanoparticles on the base of H2S bubbles is responsible for the formation of the hollow structure. The as-obtained CuS products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and UV–vis–NIR spectrophotometer. Due to the unique optical property, these hollow structures are envisaged to be used in applications such as novel building blocks for the advanced materials, catalysis, solar cell devices, and drug delivery system.

Abstract:Photoluminescent CdS-CdSe nanocomposites with core-shell structures were obtained via a novel two-step gamma-irradiation process followed by a simple ion-exchange reaction at room temperature and under ambient pressure. To fully characterize CdS-CdSe nanocomposites, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectra, and photoluminescence spectra were recorded, as well as powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution electron microscopy, to confirm the presence of the core-shell nanostructure.

Abstract:Hollow Cu2ZnSnS4 spheres were synthesized by a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) assisted solvothermal route, employing copper chloride, zinc nitrate, stannous chloride, and thiourea as precursors. The polyethylene glycol (PEG) acting as the template coordination agent plays an important role in the formation of the final product. The formation mechanism of the hollow Cu2ZnSnS4 spheres was also discussed. The microstructure and optical properties of the hollow spheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometer, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), selected area electron diffraction spectroscopy (SAED), and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The results reveal that the hollow Cu2ZnSnS4 spheres are crystallized in the tetragonal structure with about 600 nm in size. The optical absorption data show band-gap energy (E-g) of 1.52 eV which is optimal for photovoltaic applications.
