Abstract:Porous single crystals of Cr(2)O(3) and Co(3)O(4) templated by mesoporous silicas, SBA-15 and KIT-6, have been fabricated. Specimens at different stages of crystal growth were characterized by using XRD and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The final products of oxide porous single crystals were also characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption experiments. A multiseed formation mechanism can eventually be established. The present investigation revealed that the original mesostructures in SBA-15 and KIT-6 were negatively replicated by the crystals of oxides, and therefore, the dimension of the building blocks (nanorods or nanowires) in the porous crystals of oxides depends on the pore diameter of the silica. It was also found that a mesopore system, regarded as a nanoreactor, had a significant influence on the size and morphology of produced oxide particles and on the route and temperature of the crystallization.

Abstract:The nanocrystalline Co3O4 was prepared at 50 similar to 90 degreesC and pH = 9 similar to 11 using [Co(NH3)(6)](3+) and Co2+ ions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis indicated that the product was spinel-type with the space group Fd3m. The lattice constant is 0.80777(5) nm, and the oxygen parameter p = 0.3895(7). The shape of the crystallite is spheric and the size of that is about 4 similar to 30 rim. The effect of temperature on the microstructure of the crystallite, such as the crystallite size and the distribution, the shape and the crystallinity were investigated. The mechanism of the formation and the growth of the crystallite were also discussed.

Abstract:Metal oxides possessing a large surface area, pore volume and desirable pore size provide more varieties and active industrial potentials. Nevertheless, it is very challenging to produce crystal metal oxides while keeping satisfactory porosity features, especially for ternary compositions. High temperature is usually needed to produce crystal metal oxides, which readily leads to the collapse of the pore structure. Herein, by employing a 'soft' dispersant agent and a hard silica template, ZrO2, TiO2 and Zr-Ti solid solutions having a tetragonal crystal structure are produced and the silica-leached materials are characterized from macroscopic to atomistic scales. The micron-sized particulate powders are composed of nanoscale 'building blocks', with crystallite sizes between ~8 and 21 nm. These polycrystalline ceramic powders exhibit a high specific surface area (up to ~200 m2·g-1) and pore volume (up to 0.5 cm3·g-1), with a pore size range of ~5-20 nm. Importantly, the Zr/Ti-O-Si-OH chemical bonds exist on the particle surface, with about two-thirds of the surface covered by silica. The hydroxyl groups can further post-graft organic ligands or directly associate with species. Synthesized mesoporous metal oxides are highly homogenous and could potentially be used in various applications because of their tetragonal structure and porosity features.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures have been fabricated using colloidal zeolite silicalite nanocrystals as building blocks. Continuous, uniform, optically transparent and self-standing silicalite membranes with well-defined shapes and controlled mesoporosity were obtained by self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals followed by high-pressure compression and controlled secondary crystal growth via microwave treatment. The thickness of the compact self-standing membranes is tunable from 20 μm to several millimeters by simply using different surface weight densities. Controlled secondary growth via microwave treatment leads to a stronger self-standing membrane with controlled mesoporosity and has little effect on its thickness, crystallinity, micropore surface area and micropore volume.

Abstract:Three-dimensional macro/mesoporous tricobalt tetraoxide Co3O4 was prepared via a facile self-sustained decomposition using the complexes of metallic salts and organics (metal–organic complexes). Porous Co3O4 material was characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) to examine the morphology and microstructure to find out the cause. Co3O4 with the 3D hierarchical porous structure consisting of nanoparticles has a coral-like shape with a size of tens of micrometers and exhibits the hierarchically porous morphology, in which the walls of the macropores contain smaller mesopores. The catalytic performance of the porous Co3O4 for CO oxidation has been studied with a continuous flow fixed-bed quartz microreactor. The porous Co3O4 exhibits excellent catalytic activity for CO oxidation, the CO conversion rate reaches 100% at 140°C.

Abstract:A combination of colloidal crystal planarization, stabilization, and novel infiltration techniques is used to build a bimodal porous silica film showing order at both the micron and the nanometer length scale. An infiltration method based on the spin-coating of the mesophase precursor onto a three-dimensional polystyrene colloidal crystal film allows a nanometer control tuning of the filling fraction of the mesoporous phase while preserving the optical quality of the template. These materials combine a high specific surface arising from the nanopores with increased mass transport and photonic crystal properties provided by the order of the macropores. Optical Bragg diffraction from these type of hierarchically ordered oxides is observed, allowing performing of optical monitoring of the different processes involved in the formation of the bimodal silica structure.

Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous carbon FDU-16 rhombic dodecahedral single crystals with body-centered cubic structure (space group Im (3) over barm) have been successfully synthesized by employing an organic-organic assembly of triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 (EO106PO70EO106) and phenol/formaldehyde resol in basic aqueous solution. Synthetic factors (including reaction time, temperature, and stirring rate) are explored for controlling the formation of rhombic dodecahedral single crystals. The optimal stirring rate and the reaction temperature are 300 +/- 10 rpm and similar to 66 degrees C, respectively. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and ultramicrotomy are applied to study the fine structures of the carbon single crystals. The mesopores are arranged in body-centered cubic symmetry throughout the entire particle. Surface steps are clearly observed in the {110} surface, which suggests a layer-by-layer growth of the mesoporous carbon FDU-16 single crystals. Cryo-SEM results from the reactant solution confirm the formation of resol/F127 unit micelles, further supporting the layer-by-layer growth process. The mesoporous carbon FDU-16 single crystals grow up to the final size of 2-4 mu m within 2 days. These findings may have consequences for the growth mechanism of other carbon materials in aqueous solution; moreover, the high-quality single crystals also have potential applications in nanodevice technologies.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of ordered mesoporous single-crystal Cr2O3 samples were synthesized through a hard-templating pathway by using three-dimensional (3D) cubic mesoporous silica, KIT-6, as the template and chromium nitrate as the precursor. In the synthesis, the intermediate composites (chromium nitrate/KIT-6) were calcined in air for 4h at different temperatures (from 400 to 700°C, interval 100°C) to decompose the nitrate species. Then, the silica template was removed by dissolution in 10% HF solution twice. The resulting Cr2O3 samples were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, and N2-sorption analysis and their catalytic properties were also investigated in the oxidation of toluene. These results showed that the obtained ordered mesoporous Cr2O3 are exact reverse-replica of the template. It was also found that the catalytic activity was related to mesostructure and/or surface area as well as the calcination temperatures.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the synthesis of mesoporous nanocrystalline Co3O4 via a one-step, convenient and inexpensive method. The obtained Co3O4 powder samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption experiments and transmission electron microscopy. It is revealed that the molar ratio of the reactant and the calcination temperature had a significant influence on the morphology and the pore-sized distribution of the Co3O4 samples. A possible formation mechanism of mesoporous Co3O4 nanocrystalline is proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, we bring forward an effective strategy, solvothermal postsynthesis, to prepare ordered mesoporous silica materials with highly branched channels. Structural characterizations indicate that the titled mesoporous materials basically have the cubic double gyroidal (space group la-3d) structure with small fraction of distortions. The mesopore sizes and surface areas can be up to 8.8 nm and 540 m(2)/g, respectively, when microwave digestion is employed to remove the organic templates. A phase transition model is proposed, and possible explanations for the successful phase transition are elucidated. The results show that the flexible inorganic framework, high content of organic matrix, and nonpenetration of poly(ethylene oxide) segments may facilitate the structural evolution. This new synthetic strategy can also be extended to the preparation of other double gyroidal silica-based mesoporous materials, such as metal and nonmetal ions doped silica and organo-functionalized silica materials. The prepared 3D mesoporous silica can be further utilized to fabricate various ordered crystalline gyroidal metal oxide "negatives". The mesorelief "negatives" (Co3O4 and In2O3 are detailed here) prepared by impregnation and thermolysis procedures exhibit undisplaced, displaced, and uncoupled enantiomeric gyroidal subframeworks. It has been found that the amount of metal oxide precursors (hydrated metal nitrates) greatly influence the (sub)framework structure and single crystallinity of the mesorelief metal oxide particles. The single crystalline gyroidal metal oxides are ordered both at mesoscale and atomic scale. However, these orders are not commensurate with each other.

Abstract:Exploring the crystallization process of metal oxide mesocrystals has attracted enormous attention recently. However, due to the lack of insight into the behaviors of short-lived species at initial growth stages, there is currently a gap in understanding the underlying growth mechanism. Here, a combination of a preseeded hydrothermal method and transmission electron microscopy allows us to witness the rapid crystallization by particle attachement (CPA) in the early growth stage of capsule-shaped rutile titania mesocrystals. The presence of the embryonic form of nanocapsules, the slight misalignment of the primary particles, and, most importantly, the atomic interface between primary particles during attachment strongly indicate the existence of CPA mechanism. Furthermore, we rationalize our findings in terms of the free energy landscapes that govern nonclassical formation pathways. Our study provides a practical approach to explore the formation mechanism of fast-growing crystals at their initial growth stages.

Abstract:Porous ceramics are demanded in a wide range of high-temperature, biological and energy-related applications, but may show conflicting properties or suffer from poor mechanical properties. Introducing pores at different length scales has been shown to be a promising design strategy to combine antagonistic performance parameters and reach high porosity without severely compromising strength. Here, a cost-effective and simple process to create strong, highly porous ceramics via direct ink writing of suspensions of hollow microspheres into cellular architectures with pores at three hierarchical levels is reported. X-ray diffraction, rheological measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical tests are conducted to thoroughly study the processing steps and morphology of the printed hierarchical porous ceramics. The presence of pores at multiple length scales increases significantly the mechanical strength of the porous structure, providing a useful platform for the manufacturing of lightweight ceramics from inexpensive and widely available feedstock materials.

Abstract:Large-pore cubic (Im3m) mesoporous silica single crystals have been synthesized by using commercial nonionic block copolymers as templates and inorganic salts as additives. These single crystals possess exclusively uniform rhombdodecahedron shapes ( approximately 1 mum) with approximately 100% yield. The mesopore lattice array in each crystal face is solved by TEM, further confirming that these crystals are perfect single crystals.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous ZnAl2O4 spinel monolith derived from ionic precursors has been successfully prepared via the sol-gel route accompanied by phase separation in the presence of poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and propylene oxide (PO). Appropriate amounts of PEO as a phase-separation inducer and PO as a gelation mediator allow the formation of the xerogel with bicontinuous macrostructure and a monolithic shape. The macropore size of the resultant dried gel is mainly distributed in the range of 0.2-1 mu m, and the whole porosity is about 65%. The dried gel is constructed by crystalline Zn-Al hydrotalcite, becoming amorphous after heat-treated at 300-500 degrees C in air, and is further transformed into single phase ZnAl2O4 spinel with plate-like shape at 600 degrees C. The macroporous structure is well maintained while the porosity increases to 75% and the surface area rises to 109 m(2) g(-1) after heat-treatment. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Pure anorthite porous ceramics have been fabricated using -Al2O3, CaCO3, and SiO2 as raw materials through foam-gelcasting method. XRD, thermal analysis, SEM, and TEM were used to study the synthesis and grain growth of anorthite during the in situ process. The results indicated that the initiator (ammonium presulfate) took part in the chemical reaction to form CaSO4, which played an effective role during synthesis of anorthite. Besides, CaO and CaSiO2 were the other intermediate phase during synthesis. Anorthite first occurred at 1050 degrees C, and it was the only phase after it sintered over 1260 degrees C. With sintering temperature increasing from 1300 degrees C to 1450 degrees C, the large sphere pore wall got denser and the anorthite grains obviously showed platelike. It was deduced that the preferential growth of anorthite crystals was parallel to the (004) plane.

Abstract:Abstract Cr-doped mesoporous silicas with a two-dimensional hexagonal mesopore structure as well as with a cubic mesoporous framework have been synthesized by using 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride as structure directing agent template and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and Cr (NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O as precursors via hydrothermal synthesis method under alkaline conditions. The effects of the concentration of chromate on hexagonal mesophase and the reaction time on cubic mesophase were discussed in detail. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction andthermogravimetry (TG) techniques. The results show that the template has been completely removed when the sample is calcined at 550°C; the ordered long-range mesostructure with hexagonal and cubic phases can be obtained by adding appropriate amount of chromium salt.
