Abstract:A coherent combining scheme for two solid state lasers was proposed by using Michelson cavity technique.Based on constructive interference and destructive interference properties of two beam interferences,this scheme implemented the passive coherent combination of two lasers in consideration of the gain loss of a cavity.The phase-locking principle was analyzed in detail and the phase-lockings of two individual pulsed solid state lasers were experimentally demonstrated.Finally,the coherent combination output energy of 300 mJ/pulse was obtained,and its combination efficiency was 80%.These results show that the coherent combining technique proposed in this paper is characterized by self-choosing and self-adjusting and can offer a high combination efficiency.The technique can also be used in multi-beam solid laser coherence combination,for it solves the problem on the duty ra-tio in coherent combination.

Abstract:With the rapid development of laser applications, single elements of diode lasers are not able to meet the increasing requirements on power and beam quality in the material processing and defense filed, whether are used as pumping sources or directly laser sources. The coupling source with high power and high beam quality, multiplexed by many single elements, has been proven to be a promising technical solution. In this paper, the authors review the development tendency of efficiency, power, and lifetime of laser elements firstly, and then introduce the progress of laser beam combining technology. The authors also present their recent progress on the high power diode laser sources developed by beam combining technology, including the 2600W beam combining direct laser source, 1000W fiber coupled semiconductor lasers and the 1000W continuous wave (CW) semiconductor laser sources with beam quality of 12.5×14[mm. mrad]2.

Abstract:The performance of fiber laser systems has drastically increased over recent decades, which has opened up new industrial and scientific applications for this technology. However, currently a number of physical effects prevents further power scaling. Coherent combination of beams from multiple emitters has been established as a power scaling technique beyond these limitations. It is possible to increase the average power, and for pulsed laser systems, also parameters such as the pulse energy and the peak power. To realize such laser systems, various aspects have to be taken into account that include beam combination elements, stabilization systems, and the output parameters of the individual amplifiers. After an introduction to the topic, various ways of implementing coherent beam combination for ultrashort pulses are explored. Besides the spatial combination of beams, the combination of pulses in time will also be discussed. Recent experimental results will be presented, including multidimensional (i.e., spatial and temporal) combination. Finally, an outlook on possible further developments is given, focused on scaling the number of combinable beams and pulses.

Abstract:We present a novel approach for effective combining high-power lasers based on refraction-displacement-pulsed-combining and polarization combing. This approach allows combining of linearly polarization pulsed lasers with various repetition rates, pulse duration, and wavelength. In the experiment, three solid-state pulsed lasers is successfully realized a coaxial beam combining. The combining efficiency is 98.4%, and the diffraction limited times β keeps in about 4. This approach provides a feasible way to combine a large number of high average power lasers while keeping high beam quality.

Abstract:The far-field intensity distribution of 6 circular arranged coherent fiber lasers is simulated numerically and its power convergence is estimated based on Fraunhofer diffraction theory.The results show that the intensity distribution at far-field is equivalent to the product of a Gaussian envelop and the interference distribution of several planar waves.When the diameter of the arranging circle is less than 5 times of the radius of a unit laser,over 90%of the power will drop into the 86.5%power circle of the unit laser. The calculation leads to the conclusion that power convergence of the combined beam can be optimized by adjusting the arrangement,where the convergence can even exceed that of a single unit laser beam.

Abstract:High-power fiber lasers have seen astonishingly rapid progress over the last decade.All-fiber laser systems are preferred for simplicity,compactness,robustness and reliability.Characterized by intrinsically low transmission loss,fused components are referred to the optimum choices.Losses can lead to catastrophic component failure due to localized heating at high power levels.The most meaningful benchmark,when considering the power handling of the component,is the capability of the component to handle optical power loss,rather than transmitted power.Design criterions of low transmission loss are described both in single-mode components and multi-mode components.Some advices about package design are proposed.

Abstract:The fiber laser coherent combining system with tiled aperture structure is an effective method to obtain a high-brightness laser. To realize the high-efficiency combining effect, we develop a 19 fiber laser coherent combining system with a filling factor of 0.903. Then the adaptive gain coefficient is added to improve the SPGD algorithm to speed up the convergence. When the phase controller and tilt controller are in closed loop, the power in the bucket (PIB) is as high as 0.48 with the residual phase error σp ∼ λ/21, and the contrast of the far-field intensity pattern is as high as 0.9851, which indicates the system achieving a superior coherent combining effect.

Abstract:We develop a scalable multi-stage beam combining system based on the superposition of four tapered diode laser amplifiers using the coherent polarization beam combining. By employing the combination of master oscillator power amplification and active phase control of each amplifier, a stable output power of 6.9 W is obtained with a nearly diffraction-limited beam quality. The combining efficiency is 72%, and the brightness is improved by a factor of 3.3 compared to that of a single amplifier. Our system provides a new solution to obtain a high-coherence and high-brightness diode laser beam.

Abstract:The output power of the fiber laser can be increased by synthesizing the output beam, but the problem of low output power is caused by the poor ability of controlling bandwidth in the current synthesis research. Therefore, a coherent synthesis method of ultrashort pulse fiber laser based on balanced difference method is proposed. The balance difference of fiber combiner is divided into different modules, including data exchange and acquisition, circuit balancing, phase compensation, etc. Select appropriate ad conversion chip, use Ethernet chip W5300, design data exchange, ensure the normal use of data acquisition function, in the signal preprocessing module, use band-pass filter to filter out unnecessary frequency components, use AD603 to design front-end balancing circuit, design signal separation circuit, separate AC and DC signals, use active phase lock. The phase compensation of each laser is realized by the fixed technology, and the coherent synthesis of ultrashort pulse fiber laser is realized by the fiber combiner. The experimental results show that, compared with the traditional coherent synthesis method, the output power of the coherent combination method based on balanced difference method is about 900 kW, which has higher output power and better control bandwidth. It provides a theoretical basis for practical application.

Abstract:The laser source with high peak power and high beam quality has important application in laser processing and other fields. A fiber laser with repetition of 50 kHz, pulse width of 3.9 ps, and average power of 10.9 mW is used as the seed source. After double-passing two-stage amplifiers, the average output power of 27.65 W with a peak power of 65 MW is obtained. The first stage is an end pumped Nd: YVO4 amplifier, and the second stage is a side pumped Nd: YAG amplifier. The beam quality is well preserved with M2 factor of 1.3 based on the method of spherical-aberration compensation and the optimizing of the beam filling factor.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a high-robustness good-beam-quality 3×1 signal combiner that performs very well under high power. We use three 3.5kW fiber lasers to inject into the three ports of the combiner to achieve a high power output of 10.4kW, and the power transmission efficiency is 98.2%.The output beam quality M2 4; and factor are tested when the power reached the highest, which are (5.465,5.2) and 2.69 respectively. The temperature rising rate of housing is 0.9 C/kW, is effectively controlled by water cooling package of the combiner. This 3×1 signal combiner has been used in 10-kW fiber laser product and it works well in harsh environment, demonstrating high robustness against unconventional conditions.

Abstract:The 3 x 1 fused tapered fiber bundle (FTFB) signal combiner consisting of three signal fibers and a multi-mode output fiber was studied. The simulation results indicate that the transfer efficiency and output beam quality are getting better with longer taper length. Moreover, transfer efficiency for low-order mode launching is higher than that for high-order mode launching. A 3 x 1 signal combiner with taper length of 10 mm was fabricated in experiment. The input beam with high beam quality results in high transfer efficiency, which agrees with the simulation results. The transfer efficiency of 96.6%, total output power of 602 W and output beam quality of M-x(2) =10.5, M-y(2) =9. 7 were achieved as two fiber lasers with 258 W and 365 W were combined by the FTFB signal combiner.

Abstract:Fiber tapering technology has been used to realize low-loss coupling from solid-core fibers to antiresonant hollow-core fibers (AR-HCFs) at low-power level, by inserting the tapered solid-core fibers into the hollow-core of AR-HCFs. Here, we have demonstrated the high-power coupling capacity of this way. For ice-cream type AR-HCF, a transmission efficiency of ~47% is achieved with injected 1080 nm laser power of ~90 W in a ~2 m HCF; for nodeless type AR-HCF, a transmission efficiency of ~40% is achieved with injected 1550 nm laser power of ~32 W in a ~2 m HCF. The output mode field with good beam quality shows the mode filtering characteristics of AR-HCFs.

Abstract:An all-fiber structure that obtains an adjustable-ring mode (ARM) beam with a uniformly distributed central beam is put forward for the first time based on the beam combining technology. This structure is all-fiber cascaded combiners consisting of a 3 × 1 combiner and a (6 + 1) × 1 combiner in series. A multi-mode fiber with core diameter of 50 μm acts as the connective fiber, transmitting the combined laser of the first 3 × 1 combiner into the center guide core of the output fiber by the well-designed (6 + 1) × 1 combiner. Through the independent transmission of the center and ring beams, an 8.8 kW uniformly distributed central output laser with a transmission efficiency of 96.2 % and M2 of 5.24 is obtained by the cascaded combiners. The feasibility of ARM laser beam with a 10 kW-level flattop central beam provides a new approach for high-power laser welding.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a 3 × 1 signal combiner using hydrofluoric acid etched optical fibers and a low index capillary tube to fabricate tapered fused bundle(TFB). The diameter of the output fiber is chosen to be 50 μm to control the beam quality. A high output power of 6015 W is obtained with a power of 6140 W launched into the combiner by three self-made Yb-doped fiber lasers(YDFLs) operating at wavelength of 1064 nm. The total transmission efficiency reaches 98%. The beam quality factor, M2, is measured to be about 3.6, which is the best beam quality compared with the presented results to the best of our knowledge.
