Abstract:In accordance with Kuhn's paradigm theory,four main evaluation paradigms of land carrying capacity were explored and combed,namely,the evaluation paradigms based on limiting factors,comprehensive multi-factors,reference areas,and ecological footprints.The four evaluation paradigms were compared from the perspective of history background and spatial scale.It is found that the paradigm based on limiting factors had the longest history and was fully developed,while the paradigms based on comprehensive multi-factors,reference areas,and ecological footprints were all based on the former but developed along separate paths.The reason for the paradigm shifting is that the realistic questions which need to be explained and solved were always changing with time and space.There is no good or bad paradigms,but each one has its specific adaptability.To evaluate the land carrying capacity on the scales of global and country,the paradigm based on limiting factors or on ecological footprints may be better choice,while the paradigm based on comprehensive multi-factors or on reference areas is more appropriate for land carrying capacity evaluation at city and county levels.However,the research of the latter two paradigms is relatively weak,the outcome of which,namely,the rating of carrying capacity,or the relative value of carrying capacity has limit value in guiding land management.Therefore,it is urgent to strengthen the research of land carrying capacity at the city and county scales and to improve the effectiveness and maneuverability of guiding practice.

Abstract:According to different levels of economic growth and guarantee rates(P),carrying states of water resources in the base year and the planning year are studied based on an analysis of the supply-demand condition of the water resources in the Qiantang River basin.The results show that the value of water resources carrying-pressing index in base year(2003) is 1.369,which indicates that the carrying capacity of water resources is beyond its carrying capacity.Meanwhile,carrying capacity is in a light load condition under three schemes(when P=10%,P=50%);however,when P=90%,carrying capacity is overloaded.Evaluation method of the basin's sustainable development on the basis of carrying capacity of water resources is proposed.In order to find the best balance between carrying capacity and sustainable social and economic development,water for life,agriculture,ecology and industry need to be arranged properly according to the principle of supply determining demand.

Abstract:The ecological footprint method was initially proposed by Rees in the early 1990s, and Wackernagel and Niccolucci subsequently developed this method into two⁃and three⁃dimensional models. Ecological footprint models, as tools to estimate the appropriation of natural resources by humans, are important to evaluate the land carrying capacity. Using the three⁃dimension model, this paper expanded the footprint depth value range from ≥1 to ≥0, and the ecological deficit and remainder were then analyzed. Using a modified three⁃dimensional model, the ecological footprint, footprint depth, and ecological deficit (remainder) in Wenzhou City were calculated from 2000 to 2012. On this basis, the food pressure, water pressure, carbon sink pressure, construction pressure, and land comprehensive load indexes were introduced to the indicator system of land carrying capacity, and the condition of load carrying of Wenzhou City was determined. The results showed that from 2006 to 2012, the ecological footprint per capita increased annually, and since the biologically productive land remained unchanged, the ecological deficit worsened and a greater load was imposed on the land in Wenzhou City. The footprint depth value ranged from 4 to 6, which meant that natural resource flows could not meet the demand of everyday residential consumption, and natural resource stocks were extensively depleted. Abstract:Urban development based on the “carrying capacity” of its resources and environment is a key principle for China’s green development stated in its 13th Five-Year Plan (2016–2020). It is, however, difficult to understand the carrying capacity especially in coastal and marine areas. A Pressure–Support (PS) framework was designed to illustrate the relationships of pressures and support and the integrated carrying capacity of a given coastal and marine area. A PS index was then developed based on the framework to apply to a case study in the coastal and marine areas of Guangxi Province, China. The evaluation results showed a decreasing marine carrying capacity trend and indicate major pressures from land reclamation, fishing, coastal industry, port construction and tourism activities. This case study demonstrates a practical approach to disentangling complex information around the carrying capacity of coastal areas, which could be an effective tool for facilitating related policy making in sustainable coastal and marine development.

Abstract:Land carrying capacity is an important indicator to quantitatively assess and judge the extents of sustainable economic developing and coexistent harmonizing between human and nature. The significance of land carrying capacity has been highlighted recently by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, which set clear requirements for arable, construction, and ecological lands. Theories and models of land carrying capacity, however, are suffering from the interference of artificial parameter setting and poor applicability. This paper attempts to overcome these limitations and propose a single factor assessment of the carrying capacity of cultivated land, construction land, and ecological land in terms of the relative carrying capacity from the perspective of a single factor assessment. Through mutual comparison, we found that the deviation caused by simulated parameter setting has been eliminated, and the relative status of each province and/or region in China has been obtained, which could provide a reference for the management and utilization of land resources. We argue that China can achieve basic self-sufficiency in both space capacity and food production without placing pressure on the global sustainable development. The results also indicate that carrying capacity state of the advanced development areas such as the eastern coastal region is relatively poor, while the carrying capacity state of the western region is relatively good.

Abstract:As an important part of resource and environment carrying capacity (RECC), land resource carrying capacity (LRCC) has focused on the limiting factors on regional development from the scale of land resources for more than two hundred years. After a brief review of the origin and early development of LRCC, the progress of LRCC is summarized as a progression from land resource population carrying capacity (LPCC) to land resource comprehensive carrying capacity (LCCC), and the hot issues of LRCC have changed from the simple humangrain relationship to more complex social and economic activitiesland resources relationships. The corresponding research methods also evolved, from static research to dynamic research, and the assessment factor have evolved from a single factor to a comprehensive index system. Agro-ecological zoning (AEZ), system dynamics (SD), ecological footprint (EF), and comprehensive evaluation methods have come to be viewed as the most representative methods of LRCC in recent years. As a focus of conventional LRCC research, the humangrain relationship still plays a significant role in LRCC evaluation because grain remains the top limiting factor of land resources and is the most significant criterion in the balance between regional population and land resources, especially for very populous countries. More attention should be paid to the accurate calculation of arable land and average food consumption levels to improve the scientific basis of LRCC evaluation. The development of science and technology and the variation of lifestyle are also important factors that influence regional LRCC. As a new topic of LRCC, LCCC has expanded the research field of LRCC in an attempt to reveal the limiting effects of land resource under open systems, but some issues such as carrying mechanism research and the combination of theoretical and applied research are needed in future studies to promote the further development of LCCC.

Abstract:After a period of rapid development, the process of urbanization in China has gradually shifted from "scale expansion" to "enhanced quality". The scarcity of urban land resources has created constraints on resources and economic development. This paper examines the carrying capacity of urban land resources from the perspective of urban renewal. A conceptual model of the driving mechanism of land comprehensive carrying capacity is constructed, incorporating six dimensions and 22 indicators, including urban renewal and urban ecology. Through questionnaire surveys and structural equation modeling, feedback data are analyzed, and measurement models, structural models, and mediation effects are examined to analyze the causal paths of factors in different dimensions on the comprehensive carrying capacity of urban land. The research results indicate that all six dimensions in the conceptual model have a direct positive impact on the land carrying capacity. In terms of direct effects, the influencing factors are ranked in descending order of magnitude as follows: urban development, urban disaster prevention and mitigation capacity, infrastructure development, urban renewal, social economy, and urban ecology. In terms of overall effects, factors are ranked in descending order of magnitude as follows: urban development, social economy, urban ecology, urban renewal, urban disaster prevention and mitigation capacity, and infrastructure development.

Abstract:Determining the carrying capacity of ecological resources is the key to finding contradictions between human activities and the environment, as well as the links between economic growth, environmental protection and social development. In recent years, the carrying capacity of the ecological environment has been extensively studied at home and abroad. Through extensive literature research and analysis, this paper discusses the current status and main problems of recent research on the carrying capacity of the ecological environment in China. For example, two of the main problems are that: 1) the concepts and connotations are not clear enough, and 2) the research content is not systematic enough. This is followed by a summary of the evaluation index system and main calculation methods. Finally, according to the research status and development trends at home and abroad, the possible direction for the development of this research field in the future is proposed.

Abstract:Urban carrying capacity (UCC) concept is an important barometer and yardstick of sustainable urban development. There are a substantial number of studies dedicated to the broadest sense of the carrying capacity concept, and a plethora of underlying theories and evaluation methods have been reported. However, UCC, i.e. study at the urban setting, is a largely different research theme due to the varied meanings, principles, emphasis, and implications. Studies focused on UCC are still in its nascent period, existing in a limited volume of literature, a loosely knitted theoretical basis, with a lack of credible assessment methods and limited applications. Against this background, this research is aimed at analyzing and summarizing related studies on UCC. Through an extensive literature review, this paper integrates the existing concepts of UCC, reviews current research status, compares the pros and cons of related research methods, summarize knowledge gaps, and makes suggestions for planners and urban managers to ameliorate UCC. It contributes to a better understanding of the UCC concept. The research findings will inspire researchers to advance from the current status, and also provide clues to city managers and urban planners for developing appropriate strategies and actions to improve urban planning and management.

Abstract:More and more countries have implemented the principle of “sustainable development” into their own development agenda. The key to “sustainable development” is to keep a perfect balance among economic development, resource conservation and environment protection. As the estimations of the magnitudes of the economic development and human population that can be supported by the resource and environment in an area, resource and environment carrying capacities is the foundation of any actions implementing “sustainable development”. Only with the accurate measurements on the resource and environment carrying capacities, will we be able to device developmental plans that take into account of the limiting resources or the worsening environmental conditions, so that “sustainable development” can be realized. In this review, we summarized the importance of four types of resource carrying capacities (i.e. land, water, energy and biotic resource capacities) and two types of environment carrying capacities (i.e. air and water quality). In addition, the means to evaluate these carrying capacities were also demonstrated by referring to numerous national standards and related literatures. Finally, we made suggestions on future studies on resource and environment carrying capacities and how to apply these measurements to the future development agenda implementing “sustainable development”.

Abstract:The study of ecological carrying capacity is an important basis for the settlement of resource shortage and environment deterioration and the realization of regional sustainable development,and also,one of the hot spots in geography,ecology,and economics.After reviewing the related research achievements,this paper elucidated the connotation of ecological carrying capacity,i.e.,a representation of the supporting function and compressive stress of complex ecosystem,introduced the universal measuring methods of ecological carrying capacity,e.g.,net primary productivity(NPP),ecological footprint(EF),balance of supply and demand,evaluation with comprehensive indices,and systematic modeling,and presented the research progress in the ecological carrying capacity of the regions being more concerned,including watersheds,ecological fragile areas,cities,agricultural areas,and tourism areas.The deficiencies in current studies,such as the shortage of complete scientific research system,the ambiguity of threshold value's ecological meaning,the lack of time series study,and the absence of spatial pattern analysis,were summarized,and accordingly,the development trends in action mechanisms,model construction,and practical application were prospected.

Abstract:Evaluations of resources and environmental carrying capacities (GRECC) are the premise of land space planning and use control. Resource allocations and environmental capacity are the basic conditions that restrict development in a region. In this paper, based on a systematic review of China’s geological environment, groundwater resources, mineral resources, other geological resources and the environmental carrying capacity research status, the relationship between the natural resource environmental system and the socio-economic system is studied. Then a “coordination theory of resources and environmental carrying” is proposed. Next, on the basis of an evaluation experiment performed at different scales and for different types of regions, the technical methods for an evaluation of the geological resources and environmental carrying capacity at the regional (inter-provincial) and provincial scales in China are established for the first time. This paper presents a standardized method based on technical ideas, evaluation methods, and index systems for geological resource and environmental carrying capacity evaluation. Finally, an evaluation of the groundwater resource carrying capacity in China is used as an example for the demonstration of the groundwater resource background and use of state evaluation methods.

Abstract:Study of carrying capacity of water resources is very popular in recent years. Based on the researches of different scholars,the now theory system of carrying capacity of water resources coupled with quantity and quality is issued in this paper,which includes the definition,connotation and computable model. Expressed by a formula with clearly physical meanings,the new computable model involving water quantity and quality is very practical and easy for understanding. With a case study of Shiyang river basin,the current and future carrying capacity of the river basin is calculated by the model and the approaches to improve the carrying capacity of water resources are presented.

Abstract:The concept and origin of carrying capacity (CC) and ecological carrying capacity (ECC), and its theories and approaches to measure sustainable development were briefly presented and reviewed in this article. The quantitative measurements for ecological carrying capacity, i. e. the net primary productivity of natural vegetation, the dispersion of resource to requirement, the model of sustainable environmental CC, the integrative assessment for ECC and the state space, were discussed respectively. The possibilities and applicabilities of ECC to measure regional sustainable development were also pointed out.

Abstract:With the urgent increasing of the demands of urban transportation, the environment problems are getting worse and the usage efficiency of traffic resources has been reduced. Based on the traditional urban transportation planning theory, the traffic environmental carrying capacity is adopted as the constrained condition to control and optimize the development scale and modes structure of urban transportation. After a thorough study and comparison of the main urban developmental modes, the paper points out that the ideal urban developmental mode is the eco-city. By using the traffic environmental carrying capacity as the constrained condition, the theoretical frame of the urban eco - transportation planning is formed. According to the related theories of the transportation engineering and the environment engineering, the different phases of the urban transportation planning are researched, the calculation contents and models are formed, and all the parameters in the models are defined. The model can be applied in the planning and management of transportation network, and feasibility research of highway project. Copyright ASCE 2007.

Abstract:From the perspective of human survival and development ,the regional land sustainable development e‐valuation model was established based on land carrying capacity and relative land carrying capacity .Then the land car‐rying capacity status and changing trend in Shaanxi province during 1978-2013 was analyzed .At the same time ,the land carrying capacity was compared with the whole country based on an improved relative land carrying capacity .The results showed that the land carrying capacity of Shaanxi province could be divided into four stages .They were accu‐mulation period ,wave period ,trough period and growth period .Its land carrying capacity was lower than the national average level during 1978-2010 ,and then higher than the national average .The land carrying capacity of Shaanxi province was significantly influenced by the number of rural residents and the average life consumption of rural families at present .The average grain expenditure of urban residents and the total population of the region might be the main factors in the future .Future studies should focus on the combination of independence and openness of the region ,to e‐valuate the sustainable development of land resources ,advance urbanization reasonably ,improve the level of land car‐rying capacity ,and achieve coordination of people and land without reducing the quality and quantity of agricultural land .
