Abstract:The Yangtze River Economic Belt is a vital ecological security barrier and a focus of China’s economic development. Promoting the construction of urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Basin is of great significance for accelerating the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Using the five urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt as the research object, we evaluate their environmental carrying capacities and explore the coupling relationship between urban agglomeration development and environmental carrying capacity using a four-quadrant analysis method. We categorize these urban agglomerations into three types. The results show that the urban agglomeration in the Yangtze River Delta belongs to a mature–environmental overload type, the urban agglomerations in Chengdu–Chongqing and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River belong to the high-speed development–environmental overload type, and the urban agglomerations in central Guizhou and central Yunnan belong to the cultivation–environmental non-overload type. Furthermore, we propose strategic suggestions for the development of urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from the aspects of ecological space control, optimization of land spatial pattern, green development of urban agglomerations, and improvement of human settlement environment. These aim to strengthen the guiding role of environmental carrying capacity in the development of urban agglomerations and provide basic support for promoting the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

Abstract:Environmental carrying capacity is an important topic in the research of the coordinated development of population, resources and environment. It must be carefully considered when efforts are given to coordinating the economic development and environmental protection. This paper attempts to give a definition of the environmental carrying capacity and discusses its descriptive methods. By describing the relationship between the development variable and the constraint variable, a case study is made on Meizhouwan of Fujian province, an emerging economic development region. On the basis of analysis of its carrying capacity of environment, some proposals for regional planning are made in an attempt of providing a scientific basis for the coordinated development of population, resources and enviornment in the region.

Abstract:Determining the carrying capacity of ecological resources is the key to finding contradictions between human activities and the environment, as well as the links between economic growth, environmental protection and social development. In recent years, the carrying capacity of the ecological environment has been extensively studied at home and abroad. Through extensive literature research and analysis, this paper discusses the current status and main problems of recent research on the carrying capacity of the ecological environment in China. For example, two of the main problems are that: 1) the concepts and connotations are not clear enough, and 2) the research content is not systematic enough. This is followed by a summary of the evaluation index system and main calculation methods. Finally, according to the research status and development trends at home and abroad, the possible direction for the development of this research field in the future is proposed.

Abstract:Urban carrying capacity (UCC) concept is an important barometer and yardstick of sustainable urban development. There are a substantial number of studies dedicated to the broadest sense of the carrying capacity concept, and a plethora of underlying theories and evaluation methods have been reported. However, UCC, i.e. study at the urban setting, is a largely different research theme due to the varied meanings, principles, emphasis, and implications. Studies focused on UCC are still in its nascent period, existing in a limited volume of literature, a loosely knitted theoretical basis, with a lack of credible assessment methods and limited applications. Against this background, this research is aimed at analyzing and summarizing related studies on UCC. Through an extensive literature review, this paper integrates the existing concepts of UCC, reviews current research status, compares the pros and cons of related research methods, summarize knowledge gaps, and makes suggestions for planners and urban managers to ameliorate UCC. It contributes to a better understanding of the UCC concept. The research findings will inspire researchers to advance from the current status, and also provide clues to city managers and urban planners for developing appropriate strategies and actions to improve urban planning and management.

Abstract:With the urgent increasing of the demands of urban transportation, the environment problems are getting worse and the usage efficiency of traffic resources has been reduced. Based on the traditional urban transportation planning theory, the traffic environmental carrying capacity is adopted as the constrained condition to control and optimize the development scale and modes structure of urban transportation. After a thorough study and comparison of the main urban developmental modes, the paper points out that the ideal urban developmental mode is the eco-city. By using the traffic environmental carrying capacity as the constrained condition, the theoretical frame of the urban eco - transportation planning is formed. According to the related theories of the transportation engineering and the environment engineering, the different phases of the urban transportation planning are researched, the calculation contents and models are formed, and all the parameters in the models are defined. The model can be applied in the planning and management of transportation network, and feasibility research of highway project. Copyright ASCE 2007.

Abstract:In recent years, rapid global urbanization accompanied by rapid economic growth has resulted in increasingly serious eco-environmental problems such as land degradation and pollution. As a society, we are gradually realizing the role of environmental protection and ecologically-focused construction in promoting sustainable development. As an important method for assessing sustainable development, ecological carrying capacity (ECC) has become a powerful tool for investigating sustainable development and assessing eco-environmental problems. Based on results from a large number of previous studies in this discipline, we summarized and generalized the implications, main assessment methods, and key research domains of ECC. Deficiencies and future trends in ECC research are identified. In terms of implications, ECC can be roughly defined into the perspectives of environmental change, human effects on ecological systems, and holistic ecological systems. The primary assessment methods and models can be classified in accordance with these three perspectives, including ecological footprint method, ecosystem-services-based method, net primary productivity method, situation space method, energetic ecological footprint model, system dynamics model, and coupling model. We compared the advantages and disadvantage of different methods and analyzed their applicable conditions. As ECC research has advanced, related studies have gradually extend to land systems, watershed systems, ecologically vulnerable areas, tourism systems, and urban comprehensive systems, which have solved relevant eco-environmental problems based on ECC assessments. Currently, ECC research lacks a standard definition for the ECC index threshold, research related to dynamic monitoring and early warning, sufficient consideration of scientific and technological drivers, and spatial pattern analyses. Future trends in ECC-related research should provide a large-scale assessment of cross-border areas and ecological vulnerable areas, construct an ecological warning platform, and consistently analyze ECC and regional leading industries.

Abstract:Though considered a significant barometer of urban sustainable development, urban carrying capacity (UCC) has yet to be clearly defined and the concepts it comprises have not received adequate scholarly attention in relation to their empirical applicability. This article, by introducing the concept of human well-being and redefining it in the context of UCC, presents a novel framework for UCC assessment. The proposed framework discards the pursuit of "limits of growth," but instead focuses on whether the human well-being has been (or will be) compromised through monitoring the status of the associated UCC indicators. This framework is further applied to China's four first-tier cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, to assess their UCC in empirical terms. The results show that all of them are generally able to meet the survival-related well-being, while the prospect of meeting challenges of varying magnitude in order to realize higher-level goals. We developed this UCC assessment framework to provide a rational way for the implementation of UCC monitoring and forewarning, and in turn, to guide sustainable development of urban areas according their urban carrying status.

Abstract:After a period of rapid development, the process of urbanization in China has gradually shifted from "scale expansion" to "enhanced quality". The scarcity of urban land resources has created constraints on resources and economic development. This paper examines the carrying capacity of urban land resources from the perspective of urban renewal. A conceptual model of the driving mechanism of land comprehensive carrying capacity is constructed, incorporating six dimensions and 22 indicators, including urban renewal and urban ecology. Through questionnaire surveys and structural equation modeling, feedback data are analyzed, and measurement models, structural models, and mediation effects are examined to analyze the causal paths of factors in different dimensions on the comprehensive carrying capacity of urban land. The research results indicate that all six dimensions in the conceptual model have a direct positive impact on the land carrying capacity. In terms of direct effects, the influencing factors are ranked in descending order of magnitude as follows: urban development, urban disaster prevention and mitigation capacity, infrastructure development, urban renewal, social economy, and urban ecology. In terms of overall effects, factors are ranked in descending order of magnitude as follows: urban development, social economy, urban ecology, urban renewal, urban disaster prevention and mitigation capacity, and infrastructure development.

Abstract:Sustainable urban development has been receiving growing concerns from both city managers and urban residents across the world. As a yardstick of sustainability, urban carrying capacity (UCC) is an important conceptual underpinning that guides local governments in promoting sustainable urban development. However, existing studies still lack consensus not only on the theoretical aspects, but also on the methodological issues for UCC monitoring and evaluation. A knowledge gap exists, which this paper fills. This study aims to develop a practical UCC assessment framework to guide urban development towards achieving sustainability. The quantitative-based assessment framework provides a set of measurable indicators and benchmarks for city managers to conduct routine monitoring on progress toward urban sustainability, and helps identify deficient areas, which urgently need resource allocation to improve UCC. Focusing on a case study of Beijing, this study demonstrates that the framework is useful in promoting urban sustainability. This framework provides rich implications for other city prototypes in China as the nation marches into the next phase of development.

Abstract:Urbanization has prompted a dramatic social and economic development during the past decades in China. As a long-term national strategy, urbanization can only be implemented effectively with sufficient and sustainable ecological environment resources. By appreciating that the ecological environment carrying capacity (EECC) is a yardstick for guiding the practice of sustainable urban development, it is therefore pressing to examine the change of EECC adequately, so that the sustainable urbanization can be addressed appropriately. This paper develops a new method from load-carrier perspective to explore the change of EECC performance in the rapid urbanizing China. The EECC performance on water, land, atmosphere and overall perspectives were measured for 30 provinces in China based on the established method. The results show that most provinces in China are experiencing an improving EECC performance during the urbanization process, particularly with an obvious progress in land dimension. In referring to the spatial difference of overall EECC performance, the gap between 30 provinces has been narrowing during surveyed years. However, few provinces including Chongqing, Shandong and Jiangxi have undergone a degradation in overall EECC performance. The EECC performance in atmosphere dimension is still considered as a challenge faced by most provinces, evidenced by high level of PM2.5 concentration. These research findings provide valuable references not only for Chinese governments to formulate effective policy instruments and strategy measures for improving ecological environmental carrying status, but also for researchers to further study in the ecological environment carrying capacity in the context of other countries.

Abstract:The study of ecological carrying capacity is an important basis for the settlement of resource shortage and environment deterioration and the realization of regional sustainable development,and also,one of the hot spots in geography,ecology,and economics.After reviewing the related research achievements,this paper elucidated the connotation of ecological carrying capacity,i.e.,a representation of the supporting function and compressive stress of complex ecosystem,introduced the universal measuring methods of ecological carrying capacity,e.g.,net primary productivity(NPP),ecological footprint(EF),balance of supply and demand,evaluation with comprehensive indices,and systematic modeling,and presented the research progress in the ecological carrying capacity of the regions being more concerned,including watersheds,ecological fragile areas,cities,agricultural areas,and tourism areas.The deficiencies in current studies,such as the shortage of complete scientific research system,the ambiguity of threshold value's ecological meaning,the lack of time series study,and the absence of spatial pattern analysis,were summarized,and accordingly,the development trends in action mechanisms,model construction,and practical application were prospected.

Abstract:As the most concentrated area of human activities, cities consume many natural resources and discharge a large amount of waste into the natural environment, which has a huge environmental impact. Most of the ecological and environmental problems, such as environmental pollution, global climate change, and loss of biodiversity, are related to urban systems. How to coordinate urban development with the urban ecological carrying capacity is related to the destiny of the city itself, and also to whether its surrounding areas can successfully achieve the goal of high environmental quality and sustainable development. At present, the theory and methods of urban ecological carrying capacity research are relatively new, which has caused problems for policy makers in practical applications. This paper proposes a theoretical framework for urban ecological carrying capacity assessment based on the analysis of ecosystem services supply and demand. Combined with multi-source spatial data and spatial model methods, the supply and demand of ecosystem services were spatially quantified. The capital city of China, Beijing, was the case study area for this research. The spatial differentiation of the supply–demand relationship of ecosystem services is formed. The priority areas for ecological carrying capacity improvement at pixel scale and at the administrative level are obtained, respectively. The results show that the first priority area is concentrated in the center of the urban area, accounting for 31.11% of the total area of Beijing. According to the secondary zone and the specific ecosystem service type, the ecological carrying capacity improvement strategy of different zones is proposed. This study provides a new perspective for investigating urban ecological carrying capacity and for identifying the priority areas for ecological carrying capacity improvement, and helps the policy-makers to design tailored policy actions.

Abstract:Extant studies have presented various indexes for evaluating urban carrying capacity (UCC), but there is no consistent perspective on UCC. This paper presents a guiding index framework from a holistic perspective as a reference guidance for evaluating urban carrying capacity (UCC). The framework is developed based upon the theory of sustainable urban development by addressing the fundamental question of what carrying capacities are needed to enable sustainable urban development. The framework is composed of three-layer elements, namely, top-layer pillars, intermediate-layer carriers, and bottom-layer indexes. At top-layer, there are three pillars of UCC, namely, economic carrying capacity, social carrying capacity, and environmental carrying capacity. The intermediate-layer carriers are identified based upon production factors theory, Maslow’s need-hierarchy theory, and environmental factors theory. The bottom-layer presents guiding indexes which are established through comprehensive literature review, references to criteria and expert validation. The three pillars of UCC carry on different functions. Economic capacity is to maintain economic growth, which is generated by utilising effectively economic carriers, such as natural materials, human resources, and capital resources. Socially, a city should have the capacity to meet human needs through providing effective social carriers, such as food, housing, transportation, education, and medical services. Environmentally, a city should be capable to provide quality environment including land, water, and atmosphere. Each carrier is underpinned by several measurable indexes to examine the level of urban carrying capacity. The guidance and rationale of how to apply the proposed UCC guiding index framework are provided across three pillars of urban carrying capacity.

Abstract:To control the urban transportation development scale and optimize the structure of traffic modes, the traffic environmental carrying capacity (TECC) was taken as constraint condition in this paper. Through analysis of theories on the transportation planning and the environment capacity, the integrated definition of TECC was composed by four components which were Traffic Environmental Resource Carrying Capacity (TERCC), Traffic Environmental Pollution Carrying Capacity (TEPCC), Traffic Environmental Mentality Carrying Capacity (TEMCC) and Traffic Environmental Economy Carrying Capacity (TEECC).The models of TERCC and TEPCC were put forward and the proper value range of some relative parameters was assessed. If the results of TECC calculation exceed the limitation, we can adjust the proportion of all traffic modes, or introduced into new traffic mode, or make some measures to improve TECC value. By the application to compute TECC of Xipsilaan city, these models got verification. Furthermore, the theories and the models of TECC also can provide solid support for the proper transportation planning and management of network, and offer effective reference for the appropriate feasibility research of highway project.

Abstract:In the context of the construction of ecological civilization, the evaluation of resource and environmental carrying capacity has been elevated to the starting point of the preparation of Territorial Spatial Planning, therefore it needs to provide support and guidance for the follow-up work. However, the traditional cognition and evaluation framework of carrying capacity failed to provide effective support for the preparation of Territorial Spatial Planning. Meanwhile, provincial level is at the core of the scale connection of Territorial Spatial Planning. From this, this article chooses the resource and environment carrying capacity at provincial level as object, combing and summarizing the main content of Territorial Spatial Planning, deriving its two major requirements for provincial resource and environment carrying capacity evaluation. Based on this, explore and build a brand-new cognition of carrying capacity for Territorial Spatial Planning at the provincial level. Finally, the above framework is applied to the case study of Zhejiang Province to provide ideas and reference for the development of relevant evaluation practices.
