Abstract:The Hepu Han Tombs, located on the south coast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in southern China, bordering the Beibu Gulf, can date back to the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), when Hepu was an important international trade port of the maritime Silk Road, spreading strong and persistent cultural influence to neighboring countries from ancient China, and also connecting China with African, European and other Asian countries in national migration, religious communication, political, trade, technical and cultural exchanges, and so on. The research of the Hepu Han Tombs can offer opportunities to understand the burial customs and the Han culture in the Chinese Han Dynasty. With the aim of detecting the location, depth and geometry of two burial mounds at Jinjiling Site of Hepu Han Tombs, an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey was performed in cooperation with archaeological team to calibrate the results with detailed information from the limited drillings in the area. Besides, series of 2-D ERT sections, acquired above the larger mound, were combined into a “Pseudo 3-D” volume, and iso-resistivity surfaces were further calculated to emphasize the location and lateral variations within the data volume, expected towards a more detailed and quantitative interpretation. Both the 2-D and 3-D resistivity imaging gave a clear evidence of structural details of the burial mounds. The results have shown a general consistency between the geophysical work and traditional archaeological drilling explorations, improving our knowledge on the un-excavated mounds, and allowing detailed pre-excavation plan at the Hepu Han Tombs.

Abstract:The dense asphalt road and hardened cement floor bring much difficulty to the archaeological exploration of underground urban site,while the traditional high-density resistivity method need to interpose electrodes, so it cannot be used to the urban environment. The capacitively-coupled resistivity method don't have to invade in the earth,through the special electrode consist a capacitor with the earth so that produces current , therefore, it's suitable for the conditions of urban hard surface particularly.In order to test the effect of capacitively-coupled resistivity method in archaeological exploration of urban site, we conducted the capacitively-coupled resistivity exploration in Wuyue seawall which located in Hangzhou main cityarea, and collected the electrical data contain multiple transmitter and receiver distance, then use the data for the inversion processing,finally, compared and analyzed the results of inversion and archaeological excavations. Indicating that the inferred results of resistivity images are consistent with the archaeological excavation results. The capacitively-coupled resistivity method is effective for archaeological exploration of urban sites and has broad application prospects.

Abstract:This paper introduces the detection effect of high density resistivity method to high resistance objects in different buried depth and way of placement through laboratory experiment method. The results show that high density resistivity tomography method can get effective detection to high resistance objects,and obtain 3D information of the objects,but the detecting depth is lower compared with the low resistance object probing.

Abstract:In order to test the ability of geophysical technologies to detect buried structures made of mud brick and rammed earth, a geophysical survey was acquired at Qocho City site of China in 2012 using magnetic gradient and ground penetrating radar (GPR). Magnetic anomalies were interpreted as the response of house wall foundations, pits, and a temple base by reference to archaeological results from a neighbouring excavation area. The magnetic data were complemented by 2D ground penetrating radar profiles, which provided additional information on the depth of these causative structures. An archaeological survey dated 1913 reported the layout of three houses that have since been largely razed to the ground in the study area. Our geophysical survey confirmed the locations of two houses. This study shows that magnetic and ground penetrating radar methods are valuable tools to detect buried earthen archaeological remains in a dry environment.

In order to develop detailed subsurface images for archaeological prospection, a full 3-D ERT is indispensable, particularly when complex subsurface heterogeneity exists. In our study, the 3-D surveys with electrode configurations of pole-pole, pole-dipole, dipole-dipole and wenner were carried out with 128 electrodes in Ancient city Liangzhu site, Zhejiang Province, China, to evaluate the applicability and the effectiveness of full 3-D ERT with different arrays for archaeological purpose. Besides, the grid was arranged at 16 by 8 electrodes with a fix spacing of 0.5 m. The results show that the pole-dipole array is a good choice in the shallow 3-D EHT survey for archaeological prospection, as it can satisfy the characterize of water-filled ditches on the surface and the buried ancient wall. Application of Electrical Resistivity Tomography to Monitor the Dewatering of Vertical and Horizontal Wells in Municipal Solid Waste Landfills

Abstract:The performance of vertical and horizontal wells is usually evaluated using water level wells or piezometers in landfills. In this study, pumping tests in vertical and horizontal wells were performed at the Changan and Tianziling landfills, respectively. During the pumping tests, the leachate level drawdown around the wells and the resistivity of the surrounding waste were both measured to investigate the feasibility of applying electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) to monitor the dewatering in landfills. It was found that the resistivity rho of the waste samples drilled from the Tianziling landfill decreased as volumetric moisture content theta increased, and the relationship could be fitted with Archie's law (rho = rho(w)a theta(-m)). For waste samples with the same theta, rho tended to increase as the depth of the samples increased. It was because the waste at deeper layers experienced longer degradation and tended to have greater proportion of inert particles like cinder and dust. During a vertical well pumping test in the Changan landfill, the resistivity of waste on the right side of the well increased by 10% to 30%. The distribution of areas where resistivity increased was heterogeneous. During two horizontal well pumping tests in the Tianziling landfill, the areas where resistivity increased were distributed in an ellipse around one well and were horizontally distributed around another well. The resistivity of waste near the two wells increased by 4% to 18%. According to the ERT testing results, the influence radii of the two wells were estimated as 38.7 m and 33.2 m, respectively. These were close to the values (i.e., 42.1 m and 34.8 m, respectively) obtained through leachate level testing results. Artifacts produced by the inversion process were both found in the ERT images of vertical and horizontal well pumping tests. The combined use of ERT with other hydrogeological monitoring methods can improve the understanding of draining effects by vertical and horizontal wells in landfills.

Abstract:It was brooky and swampy in ancient Liangzhu city about 5 000 years ago.In order to rapidly investigate the distribution of palaeo-drainage system and the range of remains layer in Liangzhu city-site and further to reveal the background of the geographical environments,several geophysical methods,such as magnetic,electrical tomography,ground-penetrating radar(GPR) and radioactivity survey,were employed.Most of the geophysical methods showed obvious anormalies in palaeo-drainage systems and the remains layers,and the anormalies were consistent with the drilling results.The survey results show that palaeo-drainage system and the remains layer can be distinguished by these integrated surveys and interpretations All these indicate that geophysical methods are effective,feasible and cost-efficient for archeological exploration and the integrated geophysical methods are useful to identify and verify the archeological anomaly in some cases by comparison and validation.

Abstract:The appearance and structure of an ancient city wall made of earth might have been greatly changed beyond recognition through long exogenic or/and earth-leveling processes.It is therefore crucial to gain a clear idea of the original extension of the moat and the structure of the city wall in the protection of the city wall.The electric conductivity of a slacktip deposit is different from that of the original city wall,so is the filling in the moat course from the raw earth along the moat.Their difference in the resistivity is thus effective in distinguishing the structure of a city wall from the extension of a moat.This paper presents a successful case study of the wall and moat of Helv fortress,the result of which has been proved to be consistent with that obtained by an traditional archaeological method.

Abstract:The tomography is a new nondestructive detection technique developed in recent years; it has special advantages of rich information, accuracy and visibility. So it has been playing more and more important role in detecting hidden danger of earth-rock dams. Based on the discussion of the theory of electrical resistivity tomography, a series of resistivity tomography nondestructive detcction tests has been carried out in Longfengshan Reservoir Dam. The seepage channels in Longfengshan Reservoir Dam has been found out; meanwhile, it has been approved that this method is reliable via applied to nondestructive detection in earth dams. The local tests indicate that the resistivity tomography nondestructive detection technique may be applied to detecting hidden dangers of earth-rock dams.

Abstract:Goaf ground collapse has great constraints on people's lives, property safety, and social development within the influence scope because of its concealment and suddenly happening characteristics. The high-density resistivity method is used to explore the goaf of a quarry in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province. The surface subsidence of the goaf is analyzed using the apparent resistivity inversion section diagram and the comprehensive analysis results. The filling water or sediment in the goaf is reflected as a low-resistivity abnormal body, with a resistivity change that is significantly different from the resistivity change of the surrounding bedrock and the contour fluctuation. The morphological characteristics and geological conditions of the underground abnormal body in the goaf are deduced. Based on the geophysical prospecting method, geological disasters such as goaf ground collapse can be explored. From the combined analysis and processing of inversion data, the geological structure and stratum information of goaf can be inferred, which provides a theoretical basis for further disaster prevention.

Abstract:The article briefly introduced the characteristics of high-density resistivity method,and took the results of the south past of the Fourth Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge in a section of the roadbed detection as an example,obtained some two-dimensional images of the apparent resistivity.Through the analysis of anomaly patterns in the two-dimensional images of the apparent resistivity,inferred the depth of bedrock and the distribution,the size and the depth of karst cave in the experiment site.The drilling data confirmed that the inference were basically consistent with the actual situation.

Abstract:Abstract 3D high-density electrical method is a kind of artificial underground stable flow field established by setting electrodes on the ground, which is used to analyze the underground distribution of geological bodies, so as to predict or solve the problems in the planning, design and construction of projects. However, 3D high-density electrical method still has its limitations. In order to study the resolution ability of 3D high-density electrical method in actual underground cavity investigation, a comparative test of two-pole device and dipole device was established in this paper. The results show that the two-pole device can detect large depth but low resolution, while the dipole device is more affected by depth and has better effect in the measurement of low resistance abnormal body.

Abstract:Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) is questioned for possibly damaging the micro structure of cement-based materials (CBMs), but this theme still has a lack of quantitative evidence. By using X-ray computed tomography (XCT), this study reported an experimental investigation on probing the pore structure damages in paste and mortar samples after a standard MIP test. XCT scans were performed on the samples before and after mercury intrusion. Because of its very high mass attenuation coefficient, mercury can greatly enhance the contrast of XCT images, paving a path to probe the same pores with and without mercury fillings. The paste and mortar showed the different MIP pore size distributions but similar intrusion processes. A grey value inverse for the pores and material skeletons before and after MIP was found. With the features of excellent data reliability and robustness verified by a threshold analysis, the XCT results characterized the surface structure of voids, and diagnosed the pore structure damages in terms of pore volume and size of the paste and mortar samples. The findings of this study deepen the understandings in pore structure damages in CBMs by mercury intrusion, and provide methodological insights in the microstructure characterization of CBMs by XCT.

Abstract:This paper introduces the measuring principle,components and characteristics of high density resistivity method.In the grounding reconstruction project of 220 kV Lujiang substation,using CDEGS grounding analysis software,based on layered soil model from high density resistivity method and uniform soil model from four-probe method,the ground resistance before and after the reconstruction of Lujiang substation is simulated.The simulation result shows that the simulated &calculated value based on layered soil model from high density resistivity method is very close to measured value,but the simulated &calculated value based on uniform soil model from four-probe method has large difference with measured value,and the result has verified the accuracy of the layered soil model from high density resistivity method.

Abstract:The high-density resistivity method is an array exploration method, which is based on the difference of the electrical conductivity of rock, soil and water to study the distribution of conduction current in the ground under the action of artificially applied stable current field. Based on the high-density resistivity method, it is used in hidden trouble exploration of embankments and dams, combining the relevant geological conditions and structural characteristics of the dam body, the distribution range, the defect feature and the compactness of the dam body are found out. The high-density resistivity method would provide the reference for the treatment of the sewage dam seepage and safety evaluation.

Abstract:A modified non-contact electrical resistivity measurement is proposed to determine porosity and pore network connectivity of cement-based materials. The porosity of mortar with different water-to-cement ratios was tested by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and the tortuosity was calculated from pore entrapment volume fraction. The relationship between pore structure and resistivity was studied using the three most commonly used theories. It was observed that the multi-phase phenomenological model can indicate the effect of porosity and pore connectivity on the resistivity of cement-based materials. The parameter m in Archie's Law as an index of pore connectivity can be expressed as a variable that varies with the tortuosity. The parameters in the GEM model are closely related to the nature of the material: the parameter M should be related to the composition of the material and the degree of hydration of the cement, and the parameter t is a variable that varies with the pore connectivity. Based on these theories, equations are derived to correlate the porosity and pore network connectivity to the formation factor of cement based materials. The developed approach thus has a potential to be used as a simple and effective tool for pore structure investigation of cement based materials.

Abstract:This paper reports the investigation on both high and normal strength concrete using a non-contact electrical resistivity facility. The bulk resistivity development (ρ(t)-t curves) of the fresh concretes was evaluated from casting to 72h. The relationship between the electrical resistivity and the pore structure obtained from mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) method was analyzed. And the compressive strength evolution of fresh high- and normal- strength concrete was studied based on the bulk resistivity at early ages. The experiment results indicated a linear relationship between the fractional porosity and electrical resistivity. A further correlation between the compressive strength and electrical resistivity was analyzed with Archie’s law. Based on these studies, it appears that the electrical resistivity test could provide information for the design, quality control, quality assurance, and utilization of both high- and normal- strength concrete.

Abstract:Mercury entrapment in a porous material after mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) test is widely reported, yet the characterization of the entrapped mercury remains unclear. This study reported an experimental investigation on the entrapped mercury in a porous cement paste with/without surface-conformance control determined by X-ray computed tomography (X-CT). MIP tests were performed under three different maximum intrusion pressures. Results show that the surface-conformance control can substantially depress the first rise of throat size distributions and lower the threshold throat sizes. The entrapped mercury drops can be easily traced by X-CT due to the high mass attenuation coefficient of mercury. Both the entrapped and released mercury drops only occupy the limited volume fraction of the intruded pores. The surface conformance can decrease the mercury volume released from the pores. The findings of this study provide insights in better pore structure characterization of porous cement-based materials.
