Abstract:We formed grating-like patterns of hydrogen adatom density on Cu(111) by using complementary patterns of xenon adatom density as the template. The template was pre-formed by laser-induced thermal desorption of a Xe monolayer on Cu(111) using the interference pattern of two coherent laser pulses. By following the evolution of hydrogen density gratings on Cu(111) from 153 to 183 K with linear optical diffraction, we found that the diffusion of hydrogen atoms on Cu(111) in this temperature range is the classical over-barrier hopping characterized by an activation energy barrier Ediff = 6.4 Kcal/mol (or 279 meV) and a pre-exponential factor D0 = 2.0 × 10−3 cm2/s. Based on the potential model proposed by Basdescu and coworkers for hydrogen on Ni(111), the WKB tunneling coefficient between the first vibrational excited states of a hydrogen adatom on Cu(111) is expected to be at least one order of magnitude smaller than that on Ni(111), indicating that the classical over-barrier hopping of hydrogen atoms could directly cross over to under-barrier tunneling between ground states on Cu(111).
Quantum Tunneling in the Surface Diffusion of Single Hydrogen Atoms on Cu(001)

Abstract:The adsorption and diffusion of hydrogen atoms on Cu(001) are studied using first-principles calculations. By taking into account the contribution of zero-point energy (ZPE), the originally identical barriers are shown to be different for H and D, which are respectively calculated to be ~ 158 meV and ~ 139 meV in height. Using the transfer matrix method (TMM), we are able to calculate the accurate probability of transmission across the barriers. The crucial role of quantum tunneling is clearly demonstrated at low-temperature region. By introducing a temperature-dependent attempting frequency prefactor, the rate constants and diffusion coefficients are calculated. The results are in agreement with the experimental measurements at temperatures from ~ 50 K to 80 K.

Abstract:In this work the total energy calculations on the atomic geometry and chemisorption properties of Co(0001)/H surface are performed by using the density-functional theory in the approach of the projector-augmented wave (PAW) method. For a clean Co(0001) surface the atomic relaxations of the top three Co(0001) layers are obtained. The adsorptions of atomic Hydrogen have been investigated in the surface periodicities of p(1×1), p(1×2), p(2×2), and (√3 ×√3)R30° combined with hcp hollow and fcc hollow sites. For the cases studied in this work, the atomic hydrogen occupies fcc hollow site preferably drawn from the total energies. In these surface structures the perpendicular distances between the adsorbate and the first layer of substrate (DH-Co) range from 0.93 Å to 0.99 Å. The calculations on the surface vibrational modes proved the frequencies of atomic hydrogen along substrate surface displayed strong dependence on the adsorption geometries. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Abstract:The adsorption and diffusion of carbon atom on Cu (111) and (100) surfaces have been investigated based on first-principles density-functional theory. For Cu (111) surface, the hexagonal close-packed and face-centered cubic sites are the most stable sites with little energy difference in the adsorption energy. For Cu (100) surface, the hollow site is the most stable. There is charge transfer from Cu surface to the adsorbed carbon atom. Moreover, the diffusions of carbon atom on Cu surfaces have been investigated, and the results show that the diffusion of carbon atom prefers to happen on Cu (111) surface.

Abstract:Using polarization-modulated ellipsometry to monitor adsorbate coverage in-situ, we studied the activated adsorption of filament-heated molecular hydrogen on Cu(111) and subsequent isothermal desorption of hydrogen adatoms. The adsorption is characterized by a zeroth-order kinetic with a constant sticking probability of S0=0.0062 up to θ=0.25, followed by a Langmuir kinetic until the saturation coverage θs=0.5 is reached. The desorption follows a second-order kinetic with an activation energy of 0.63 eV and a pre-exponential factor of 1×109 /s. A pre-adsorbed monolayer of Xe atoms on Cu(111), with a desorption activation energy of 0.25 eV and a pre-exponential factor of 8×1014 /s, efficiently blocks the subsequent adsorption of hot molecular hydrogen, making physisorbedXe useful as templates for spatial patterning of hydrogen adatom density on Cu(111).
Quantum effects in the diffusion of hydrogen on Ru(0001)

Abstract:An understanding of hydrogen diffusion on metal surfaces is important, not just for its role in heterogeneous catalysis and hydrogen fuel cell technology, but also because it provides model systems where tunneling can be studied under well-defined conditions. Here we report helium spin-echo measurements of the atomic-scale motion of hydrogen on the Ru(0001) surface between 75 and 250 K. Quantum effects are evident at temperatures as high as 200 K, while below 120 K we observe a tunneling-dominated temperature independent jump rate of 1.9$\times$10$^9$ s$^{-1}$, many orders of magnitude faster than previously seen. Quantum transition state theory calculations based on ab initio path-integral simulations reproduce the temperature dependence of the rate at higher temperatures and predict a crossover to tunneling-dominated diffusion at low temperatures, although the tunneling rate is under-estimated, highlighting the need for future experimental and theoretical studies of hydrogen diffusion on well-defined surfaces.

Abstract:Spin-polarized density functional theory calculations have been performed to characterize the hydrogen adsorption and diffusion on the Fe(111) surface at 2/3-, 1-, and 2-monolayer (ML) coverages. It is found that the most favored adsorption site for atomic hydrogen (H) is the top-shallow bridge site (tsb), followed by the quasi 4-fold site (qff) with the energy difference of about 0.1 eV, while the top site (t) is not competitive. Furthermore, the adsorbed atomic hydrogen (H) has a high mobility, as indicated by the small diffusion barriers. The local density of state (LDOS) analysis reveals that the Fe-H (tsb or qff) bond involves mainly the Fe 4s and 4p and H 1s orbitals with less contribution of the Fe 3d orbital, while the Fe 4s, 4p, and 3d orbitals all participate in the Fe-H (top) bond. In addition, the coverage effects on the adsorption configurations and adsorption energies are addressed.

Abstract:Diffusions of small cluster Pt6 on Pt(111) surface and Cu6 on Cu(111) are studied by molecular dynamics simulation, respectively. The atomic interaction is modeled by the semiempirical potential. The results show that the diffusion processes in the two systems are far different. For example, on Pt(111) surface, the hopping of single atom and the shearing of two atoms of hexamer only occur on the adatom(s) adsorbed at B-step, while on Cu(111) surface they can appear on the adatom(s) either at A-step or B-step. To the concerted translation of the parallelogram hexamer, the anisotropy in the diffusion path is observed in the two systems, the mechanisms and then the preferential paths, however, are completely different. The reasons for these diffusion characteristics and differences are discussed.
Diffusion of Cu adatoms and dimers on Cu(111) and Ag(111) surfaces

Abstract:Diffusion of Cu adatoms and dimers on Cu(111) and Ag(111) surfaces is analyzed basing on ab-initio surface potentials. As compared to the simple single adatom jumps that alternate between two states, dimers undergo more complex diffusion process that combines translational and rotational moves. Diffusion coefficients for these processes on both surfaces are calculated and compared with diffusion of single particle. The main parameters of diffusion coefficient: energy barrier and prefactor become temperature dependent when dimer moves jumping between many positions of different values of energy. Small difference in the surface lattice constant for Cu and Ag crystal results in completely different energy landscape for dimer jumps and as an effect different diffusion process. At the same time single adatom diffusion does not change so much.

Abstract:Based on the discrete variational method with the local-density-functional approximation (DV-LDA), we propose molecular cluster models to simulate the physical surface with and without an adsorbed atom respectively. Our DV-LDA calculations favor the atomic exchange process along the [100] direction for Al self-diffusion on Al fcc (001) surfaces and the atomic bridge hopping process along the [110] direction for Cu self-diffusion on Cu fcc (001) surfaces. Based on all available experimental and theoretical results, there is an interesting parameter which can correlate the favored self-diffusion mechanism on metallic fcc {001} surfaces. Abstract:The self-diffusion dynamics of Cu adatoms on Cu(100) surface has been studied based on the calculation of the energy barriers for various hopping events using lattice-gas based approach and a modified model. To simplify the description of the interactions and the calculation of the energy barrier, a three-tier hierarchy of description of atomic configurations was conceived in which the active adatom and its nearest atoms were chosen to constitute basic configuration and taken as a whole to study many-body interactions of the atoms in various atomic configurations, whereas the impacts of the next nearest atoms on the diffusion of the active adatom were considered as multi-site interactions. Besides the simple hopping of single adatoms, the movements of dimers and trimers as the results of multiple hopping events have also been examined. Taking into account the hopping events of all adatoms, the stability of atomic configurations has been examined and the evolution of atomic configurations has also been analyzed.

Abstract:We study the self-diffusion of adatoms on metal fcc(100) surfaces by molecular dynamics with Pt and Ag as examples. The metals are modeled by surface embedded-atom potentials. Besides the well-known exchange diffusion mechanism, another one that appears as the diffusion of an ad-dimer is also observed, and it can be explained by the ``concerted motion'' model owing to the strong bonds formed in the transition state. The important point is that this mechanism could appear frequently even at room temperature and makes adatoms more movable on fcc(100) surfaces.
Diffusion rates of Cu adatoms on Cu(111) in the presence of an adisland nucleated at FCC or HCP sites

Abstract:The surface diffusion of Cu adatoms in the presence of an adisland at FCC or HCP sites on Cu(111) is studied using the EAM potential derived by Mishin {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 63} 224106 (2001)]. The diffusion rates along straight (with close-packed edges) steps with (100) and (111)-type microfacets (resp. step A and step B) are first investigated using the transition state theory in the harmonic approximation. It is found that the classical limit beyond which the diffusion rates follow an Arrhenius law is reached above the Debye temperature. The Vineyard attempt frequencies and the (static) energy barriers are reported. Then a comparison is made with the results of more realistic classical molecular dynamic simulations which also exhibit an Arrhenius-like behavior. It is concluded that the corresponding energy barriers are completely consistent with the static ones within the statistical errors and that the diffusion barrier along step B is significantly larger than along step A. In contrast the prefactors are very different from the Vineyard frequencies. They increase with the static energy barrier in agreement with the Meyer-Neldel compensation rule and this increase is well approximated by the law proposed by Boisvert {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 75} 469 (1995)]. As a consequence, the remaining part of this work is devoted to the determination of static energy barriers for a large number of diffusion events that can occur in the presence of an adisland. In particular, it is found that the corner crossing diffusion process for triangular adislands is markedly different for the two types of borders (A or B). From this set of results the diffusion rates of the most important atomic displacements can be predicted and used as input in Kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations.

Abstract:We have developed a novel technique to study surface diffusion of adsorbed atoms or molecules on substrates. By using laser-induced thermal desorption with two interfering laser pulses overlapping on the Ni(111) surface covered by a monolayer of CO, a 2-D surface grating of CO was formed. The optical second harmonic generation diffracted from the grating was then used to follow the evolution and disappearance of this monolayer grating as the CO molecules diffuse on the surface. The method should allow us to measure the anisotropy of the surface diffusion process. Experimental details and results are presented.
Ab initio study of subsurface diffusion of Cu on the H-passivated Si(001) surface

Abstract:In this paper we use density-functional theory calculations to analyze both the stability and diffusion of Cu adatoms near and on the H-passivated Si(001) surface. Two different Cu sources are considered: depositing Cu from vacuum, and contaminating Cu outdiffusing from bulk Si. Deposited Cu from vacuum quickly moves subsurface to an interstitial site in the third Si layer (T2). Once there, Cu adatoms enter a subsurface zigzag migration route between T2 and another subsurface site, T2->HSL->T2, along the dimer row direction. Contaminating Cu outdiffusing from bulk is found to be a fast diffuser along both parallel and perpendicular directions to the dimer row when far from the surface. It is attracted to the layers close to the surface and becomes trapped at an interstitial site located at the sixth Si layer (T3). As the outdiffusing Cu atoms get closer to the surface, a channeling zigzag diffusion along the dimer row direction, similar to that one followed by deposited Cu from vacuum, is favoured over diffusion along the perpendicular direction. These results are consistent with previous experimental work done on similar systems and will motivate further experiments on the interesting interaction between Cu and Si surfaces.

Abstract:On a series of fcc(lll) surfaces modeled by the embedded atom method, adatom diffusion mechanisms are studied systematically by molecular dynamics. On most surfaces, as expected, the diffusion mechanism is only hopping. For some other surfaces, however, we find that the exchange mechanism is possible besides the well-known hopping mechanism. More interesting is that the hcp and fee sites are now different for adatom diffusion: the exchange diffusion process only occurs between the hcp sites. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract:The surface structure, relaxation, and oxygen adsorbed (2×22)R45° Cu(100) surf ace are studied by ab initio total energy calculation. The calculated atomic str ucture for the Cu(100) (2×22)R45°-O surface is quite close to the experiments except the positions of surface layer Cu atoms. The adsorbed O atoms is lying ap proximately 0.02 nm above the outermost Cu layer and produces a hybridized band and yields some localized surface states around 6.4 eV below EF. The calculated work function for studied oxygen adsorbed surface phase is 4.58 eV, w hich is close to that of clear Cu(100) surface (～4.53 eV). It is concluded that the bonding between adsorbate and substrate copper atoms is approximately limit ed to the first surface layer.

Abstract:Some metallic adsorbed atoms on fee metal surfaces can exchange with substrate atoms well below the room temperature. For homogeneous systems, the atomic exchange is a mechanism for self-diffusion. For heterogeneous systems, it is a mechanism for point alloy formation of only the top surface layer but it will also induce self-diffusion. We present experimental evidence found from FIM, HREELS and LEIS studies. These experiments and their relations to available theories and molecular dynamic simulations of this phenomenon are also mentioned. In addition, we present evidence for the ascending motion of step edge atoms to the upper terrace for the Ir (111) surface, and the result of a measurement of the potential barrier height of the ascending motion and the dissociation energy of step edge atoms to the lower terrace.
