Abstract:In his article 'A New View of Language, Emotion and the Brain,' Dan Shanahan claims that the post-war Cognitive Turn focused mainly on information processing and that little attention was paid to the dramatic role played by emotion in human cognition. One key argument in his defence of a more comprehensive view of human cognition rests upon the idea that the process of symbolization--a unique capacity only developed by humans--combines, right from the start, information processing and feelings. The author argues that any theory ignoring this fact would miss the whole point, just as mainstream cognitive science has done since Noam Chomsky published Syntactic Structures, exactly 50 years ago.

Abstract:The theoretical and methodological underpinnings of the cognitive paradigm have traditionally been discussed against the background of generative grammar, its immediate predecessor. A significantly less researched yet no less interesting relationship is the one between the cognitive and structuralist paradigm. This article focuses on the in part converging, in part diverging semiotic assumptions underlying European structural linguistics and Cognitive Grammar. A comparison of important concepts of both theories (isomorphism, the sign concept, compositionality, and case marking) shows that, although Cognitive Grammar arrives at a more realistic understanding of how language works in discourse, the theory fails to offer a coherent theory of the linguistic sign.

Abstract:Cognitive linguists are increasingly extending their paradigm to include the study of gestures. The bottom-up, usage-based approach in cognitive linguistics has advanced the methods for identifying gesture functions, starting from a detailed analysis of gesture forms. Theoretical notions from cognitive linguistics also help explain the means by which the forms of gestures can be interpreted as meaningful functions. Principles of conceptual metonymy explain how gestures indicate referents through the partial representation of their features that are relevant in the context of use. Conceptual metaphor theory sheds light on how abstract notions can be represented in gesture via comparison with physical source domains. Furthermore, every gestural representation inherently requires the gesturing speaker to employ a specific viewpoint for their depiction-something which is normally not expressed verbally. These aspects of gesture provide insights into processes of thinking for speaking that can be exploited in various fields of cognitive science research. Referential gestures also normally combine pragmatic and interactive functions (showing stance-taking, for example) with representational or deictic functions. The multiple functions of gesture combined with those of speech raise questions for further research about how viewing-listeners interpret and combine information from the multiple semiotic systems employed by gesturing-speakers. Finally, gesture use has been shown to correlate not only with lexical concepts but also in some ways with grammatical constructions. This gives rise to fundamental questions about what constitutes the grammar of a language. Gesture analysis thus raises issues for consideration in any research in cognitive science that concerns spoken language. Blind Spots of Cognitive Grammar:Starting from Metaphorical Conventions of Different Ethnic Languages

Abstract:Based on LaKoff & Johnson’s metaphor,this paper argues that metaphor is merely a means of decoding and encoding concepts,but also a means of new linguistic forms. Metaphor can be divided into conventional and non-conventional metaphor,the for-mer yielding“non -prototype effects”while the latter“prototype effects”. It seems that cognitive science does not offer appropriate explanations for“prototype effects”. If the formation of“prototype effects”in language cannot be explained,it means that it is necessary to distinguish“prototype effects”from“non-prototype effects”in grammar study;in other words,it is necessary to distinguish conventional utterance from non-conventional utterance. It is due to a lacK of distinction between conventional and non-conventional utterances that problems occur in the construction of grammar system cog-nitive grammar( Construction Grammar).

Abstract:The ability to use symbols is the pinnacle of human intelligence, but has yet to be fully replicated in machines. Here we argue that the path towards symbolically fluent artificial intelligence (AI) begins with a reinterpretation of what symbols are, how they come to exist, and how a system behaves when it uses them. We begin by offering an interpretation of symbols as entities whose meaning is established by convention. But crucially, something is a symbol only for those who demonstrably and actively participate in this convention. We then outline how this interpretation thematically unifies the behavioural traits humans exhibit when they use symbols. This motivates our proposal that the field place a greater emphasis on symbolic behaviour rather than particular computational mechanisms inspired by more restrictive interpretations of symbols. Finally, we suggest that AI research explore social and cultural engagement as a tool to develop the cognitive machinery necessary for symbolic behaviour to emerge. This approach will allow for AI to interpret something as symbolic on its own rather than simply manipulate things that are only symbols to human onlookers, and thus will ultimately lead to AI with more human-like symbolic fluency.

Abstract:Chinese accompanying gestures are a common phenomenon in life, and native speakers of Chinese use gesture modality to express metaphors. This study analyzes metaphors in Chinese accompanying gesture modality from the perspective of cognitive linguistics and cognitive neuroscience rather than the multimodal metaphor theory. Both spoken language and accompanying gesture modalities of metaphors are integrated into discourse, indicating that metaphor creation is based on general cognitive rather than linguistic features. The case study of Chinese accompanying gestures shows that conceptual metaphors can be cognitively activated when they are not expressed in oral modality. The close interaction between modality and language indicates that metaphors are a dynamic attribute rather than a static in the physical and interactive context. The study of metaphors in accompanying gesture modality provides a specific case for further studies on metaphors and offers support for creating a non-literal language cognitive model.

Abstract:Syntax and semantics are two important aspects of grammar.As for their relationship,researchers share the view that the semantic structure shapes the syntactic one.However,a key problem seems to have been neglected:where does the semantic structure come from?With a few illustrative cases,this paper aims to resolve some semantic and syntactic problems on the basis of the cognitive scene.It comes to a conclusion that the semantic structure is actually based on the cognitive scene.But cognitive scene is inadequate to explain the variations of sentence.Other theories need to be introduced to understand the relevant phenomena.

Abstract:This paper investigates the function of perceptual representation and semantic representation in language cognition. The materials are "black characters" of Dongba manuscript. The results showed that in the course of language cognition, perceptual representation and semantic representation are both active, but do not share the same mechanism. The strength of perceptual representation activation depends on the nature of the materials and the require ments of experiment tasks.

Abstract:Cultural stereotypes are widely studied in cross-cultural communication and their relation to prejudice and discrimi-nation makes them an enduring object of study. The present paper aims to apply functional linguistic analysis to stereotypical statements and their license in cross-cultural comparative discourse. The concepts of nominalization, appraisal, and transitivity system especially the relational and mental processes are analyzed in the hope of shedding more light on the understanding of the syntactic features of cultural stereotypes.

Abstract:This chapter discusses how syntax is handled in Langacker’s Cognitive Grammar (CG). It first of all points out that CG rejects the notion of autonomy of language in general and syntax in particular in that various general cognitive abilities and cognitive models are appealed to in order to make sense of linguistic organization and no clear-cut boundaries are assumed to exist between syntax and lexicon. More generally, CG argues that much in language is a matter of degree. The chapter then discusses syntactic functions, which are not regarded as primitives, and constituency. In particular, it highlights that “classical constituency”, traditionally represented by means of syntactic trees in formal approaches, is just one possible level of grammatical organization and description: attention to dynamicity or processing and discourse reveals that grammatical structure may be flat and serial, rather than hierarchical.

Abstract:Research in Cognitive Linguistics has argued extensively for the pervasive role played by space in structuring the concepts and conceptualisations associated with linguistic items and language usages. Space is a fundamental area of human experience. It is therefore not surprising to find that spatial cognition is exploited in the architecture of other cognitive systems like language. A key claim of Cognitive Linguistics has been that many of the meanings encoded by language are represented in the mind in the form of image schemas – spatially laid out representations of the recurrent structural properties of scenes and events (Lakoff 1987; Langacker 1987, 1991, 2008; Talmy 2000). Many of these schemas emerge from our bodily location in and interaction with space (Johnson 1987). This embodied view of language is developed in opposition to amodal or symbol-manipulation approaches to representation (Fodor 1975; May 1985). The motivation for a modal rather than an amodal account of meaning stems partly from commonalities perceived between language and the visual ‘parsing’ of a scene (Landau and Jackendoff 1993) and partly from the nuanced meaningful distinctions that a spatial representational format is able to capture between alternative linguistic structures (Langacker 1987: Talmy 2000). A further finding from Cognitive Linguistics has been that these experientially derived image schemas frequently serve as models for understanding more complex and abstract areas of experience in a system of conceptual metaphors (Lakoff and Johnson 1980, 1999). In this way, much of the conceptual system, as reflected in repeated patterns of language use, is grounded metaphorically in our knowledge and understanding of space.

Abstract:Abstract Given its usage-oriented character, Cognitive Grammar (CG) can be expected to be consonant with a multimodal, rather than text-only, perspective on language. Whereas several scholars have acknowledged this potential, the question as to how speakers’ gestures can be incorporated in CG-based grammatical analysis has not been conclusively addressed. In this paper, we aim to advance the CG-gesture relationship. We first elaborate on three important points of convergence between CG and gesture research: (1) CG’s conception of grammar as a prototype category, with central and more peripheral structures, aligns with the variable degrees to which speakers’ gestures are conventionalized in human communication. (2) Conceptualization, which lies at the basis of grammatical organization according to CG, is known to be of central importance for gestural expression. In fact, all of the main dimensions of construal postulated in CG (specificity, perspective, profile-base relationship, conceptual archetypes) receive potential gestural expression. (3) CG’s intensive use of diagrammatic notation allows for the incorporation of spatial features of gestures. Subsequently, we demonstrate how CG can be applied to analyze the structure of multimodal, spoken-gestured utterances. These analyses suggest that the constructs and tools developed by CG can be employed to analyze the compositionality that exists within a single gesture (between conventional and more idiosyncratic components) as well as in the grammatical relations that may exist between gesture and speech. Finally, we raise a number of theoretical and empirical challenges.

Abstract:Humans use signs, e.g., sentences in a spoken language, for communication and thought. Hence, symbol systems like language are crucial for our communication with other agents and adaptation to our real-world environment. The symbol systems we use in our human society adaptively and dynamically change over time. In the context of artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive systems, the symbol grounding problem has been regarded as one of the central problems related to symbols. However, the symbol grounding problem was originally posed to connect symbolic AI and sensorimotor information and did not consider many interdisciplinary phenomena in human communication and dynamic symbol systems in our society, which semiotics considered. In this paper, we focus on the symbol emergence problem, addressing not only cognitive dynamics but also the dynamics of symbol systems in society, rather than the symbol grounding problem. We first introduce the notion of a symbol in semiotics from the humanities, to leave the very narrow idea of symbols in symbolic AI. Furthermore, over the years, it became more and more clear that symbol emergence has to be regarded as a multifaceted problem. Therefore, second, we review the history of the symbol emergence problem in different fields, including both biological and artificial systems, showing their mutual relations. We summarize the discussion and provide an integrative viewpoint and comprehensive overview of symbol emergence in cognitive systems. Additionally, we describe the challenges facing the creation of cognitive systems that can be part of symbol emergence systems.

Abstract:Abstract Unlike alphabetic letters, Chinese characters, as orthographic symbols, can represent the meaning of a word. According to Peirce’s triadic division of signs, we believe that a Chinese character is an iconic sign for the referent that its meaning denotes; that is to say, there is something perceptually in common between the character and its denotatum; however, we could be misled by the simple definition of this “similarity” because perceptual experience is not naive but something conventional. Based on the degree of conventionality among iconic signs, we distinguish their iconic nature (i.e., iconicity) into primary and secondary kinds - the former having an obvious similarity between the sign and its referent and the latter showing a sophisticated reflection of an analogical relationship. The construction of the Chinese character system has resulted from the superposition of different iconic relationships, while their differentiation has led to the classification of Chinese characters playing an important role in the recognition of their meanings.

Sentence Schema——A Way of Interpretation Based on Frege

Abstract:The sentence schema given in this paper provides an approach to analysis of language based on Frege. It shows that the language is different from what it expresses. A sentence is a basic unit of linguistic expressions and what it corresponds to is thought on the one hand and truthvalue on the other. A sentence is a whole with component parts, so that as the reference of a sentence the true value relies on the references of its components. A sentence has a sense, that is,what it usually expresses. This level, though different from that of reference, is also helpful for determine the truth-value of a sentence, especially when involved in intensional contexts. Taking the discussion of proper names among Frege, Kripke and others as an example, the author shows how the sentence schema help to understand their ideas, to analyse their differences, and to point out the reasons of their debates.

Abstract:Abstract Formalist approaches traditionally define word classes in distributional terms. By contrast, Cognitive Grammar advocates a semantic basis: nouns profile THINGS; verbs highlight PROCESSES. There is psycholinguistic support for the importance of semantics in lexical categorisation, but also for (language-particular) distributional and phonological properties. This paper focuses on phonology, whose importance is further underlined by data from language change and typology. Following a review of the psycholinguistic, historical linguistic and typological evidence, a gap in the literature is filled, i.e. an experiment involving the production of nonce nouns and verbs is conducted, providing further converging evidence for phonology. I then show how this evidence, although not currently recognised in Cognitive Grammar, can be straightforwardly accommodated as phonological sub-schemas. These sub-schemas are probably more important than the super-schemas proposed in Cognitive Grammar (which may actually be non-existent, and anyway fail to yield clear predictions vis-à-vis empirical data). I conclude that in developing the model further, a higher degree of responsibility to all the available empirical data is called for.

Abstract:According to Peirce,the founder of American semiotics,signs can be divided into three categories: icon,index and symbol.Symbol is built up on the basis of social customs and traditions so that it can not be inferred or deduced directly.Language is a kind of typical symbol which has no indispensable relationship with the object it represents or suggests.This kind of relationship is arbitrary and occasional instead of being inevitable.Different nationalities may have different customs and traditions so that they may develop different language sign systems.People can use some symbols to express some abstract notions and feelings which are difficult to emulate and can not be directly referred to.Human beings get accustomed to using their familiar things to explain the implication of some cultural phenomena.Different cultural atmosphere and natural ecological environments make people have different association.Plants are the symbol of the natural world and the representative of the beautiful natural surroundings and they are closely related to human existence.Many idiomatic usages and symbols about plants came into being,and so did such culture.Generally speaking,people take interest in those beautiful or vigorous plants,which arouse their deep feeling.For example,the Westerners like to use ″rose″,for they take it as a love token.But in Chinese culture,the plants ″pine,bamboo and plum″ remind people of the spirit of being vigorous,tall and straight,the symbol of long life and exemplary conduct and nobility of character and branches and flowers that withstand the frost and defy the snow.The identical colors like red,blue,black,white,green,gray,yellow may be used most frequently by the world people,but they bring them different associative meaning.The color ″red″ in English symbolizes ″violence,deficit″,while it symbolizes ″happy,a festival day,revolution″ in Chinese.Influenced by experience,cultural traditions and social institutions,people have gradually formed their own values,aesthetic standards,moral standards and religious tradition.According to their experience,speeches which human beings use animals as vehicles to speak highly of noble human behavior or spirit or belittle undue human behavior have been produced.In western culture,″owl″ symbolizes wisdom,calmness,while in Chinese culture,″owl″ is described as the phantom of the devil and the symbol of ill omen.So once people establish relationship between some language signs and objects,which is acknowledged by a particular society,certain symbols may come into being.Different symbols derive from different cultures.Language sign system is the symbolic representation of a people and comprises their outlooks on life,their values,their customs,their ways of living and thinking as well as their historic and cultural backgrounds.Therefore,during the development language sign system and its profound cultural connotations have been deeply ingrained with traces of social life,reflecting the unique cultural tradition of a particular society.Symbols with rich and colorful feelings may lead to great differences due to the different cultural backgrounds of the coders.It is a meaningful effort to probe into implied meanings of symbols based on the analysis of denotations and profound cultural connotations as well as discuss the intercultural differences in different cultural backgrounds.
