Abstract:We report an unprecedented assembling performance of amide-containing, homo-structured poly(N-alkylacrylamide)s, through which they can assemble into discrete spherical particles with size ranging from tens of nanometres to several micrometres. For a specific polymer, a facile control over topology and scale of assembled structures can be accomplished via solvent conditions. Assembling using appropriate solvent gives rise to capsule-like assemblies. The molecular structure of polymers, such as the side chain chemistry and topology display striking impact on the size and morphology of resulting assemblies. These polymers might function as novel model systems for investigating complex functions performed by amide moieties in proteins, while this assembling offers a simple, facile but powerful and cost-effective manufacturing route for nano- or microstructured materials that may find great potential in diverse applications varying from cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, to biotechnology.

Abstract:A multi-responsive supramolecular polymer, beta-CD-(PNIPAAm)(4)-Azo-(PMAA)(7), is demonstrated here. This amphiphilic polymer can be achieved by altering the pH or temperature of a solution of the supramolecular polymer system. Absorption and emission spectroscopy, solution transmittance, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied. It was found that beta-CD-(PNIPAAm)(4)-Azo-(PMAA)(7) can self-assemble into inverse spherical polymeric nanoaggregates and can then disassemble reversibly under the irradiation of UV light due to the trans-to-cis isomerization of the azo groups. The resulting supramolecular polymer is demonstrated to have useful properties, including self-aggregation, supramolecular gelation and stimulus-responsive behavior.

Abstract:In this study, we report a facile and versatile strategy for preparing a type of pH-responsive superparamagnetic hybrid coassemblies featuring a series of controls over the morphology and multi-functionalization simultaneously and efficiently. Via the entanglement interactions, the combine of fixed PEG-b-P4VP modified Fe3O4 NPs (D-Fe3O4@mPEG-b-P4VP) and different well-designed free PEG-b-P4VP, which are analogous to two amphiphiles, contributes these hybrid superstructures with multiple, well-defined morphologies and targeted fluorescent properties. In contrast to other studies, our work overcame several defects (e.g., interior NPs' randomness, cumbersome assembly parameter adjustment and functionalization) of the conventional assembly of modified inorganic NPs and demonstrated that this coassembly strategy can be used as a versatile tool for the controllable assembly of other NPs or polymers. Finally, taking the coassembly C1 as a desirable drug delivery carrier, good biocompatibility and pH-triggered drug release were successfully verified. The current study indicated that these magnetic coassemblies are promising as multifunctional and multipurpose carriers in biological, medical, catalytic, and coating applications.

Abstract:Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS) are hybrid organic-inorganic nanoparticles with a 3D cage structure, i. e. , by a polyhedral Si--O--Si nanostruetured skeleton, surrounded by several organic groups linked to silicon atoms by covalent bonds which have high designability and high reactivity. Variety of POSS-Polymer hybrid materials can be prepared by selecting specific optical, electrical,magnetic and other characteristics of the unit through living polymerization method. Long range ordered nanometer structure materials are obtained by "combing" structure of molecular chain through solvents, heat, electricity, and the nanoprinting methods, obtaining the expected sequence, structural and functional polymers. This article introduces the self assembly of amphiphilic POSS hybrid polymer materials, analyzes the latest advances in research of the biological medical polymer, intelligent polymers and electro-active polymer materials ,forecasts and prospects the development in the future.
New Approaches to Stimuli-Responsive Polymeric Micelles and Hollow Spheres

Abstract:This article briefly describes some new approaches to stimuli-sensitive polymeric micelles and hollow spheres, which were developed in the authors’ laboratory in recent years. (1) Self-assembly of component polymers to non-covalently connected micelles (NCCM) driven by specific interactions. For example, in water, PCL and PAA formed core-shell nanospheres due to interpolymer hydrogen bonding. After crosslinking the PAA shell and removing the PCL core, “nanocages” made of PAA network were obtained. This hollow structure shows perfect reversible size-pH dependence. (2) Simultaneous in-situ polymerization of monomers and self-assembly of the polymers. In this approach, PNIPAM network was formed by radical polymerization covering PCL particles. Hollow spheres of PNIPAM network were then obtained by biodegradation of the PCL core. Both the core-shell spheres and hollow spheres show reversible size dependence on temperature change because of the phase transition of PNIPAM around 32°C. (3) Complexation-induced micellization and transition between the micelles and hollow spheres. Graft copolymers of hydroxylethyl cellulose (HEC) and PAA were prepared by free radical polymerization. The copolymers showed pH dependent micellization, i.e., micelles formed when pH of the graft copolymer solution decreased to around 3. The micellar structure could be locked by crosslinking the PAA grafts. The resultant cross-linked micelles undergo pH-dependent transition between the micelles and hollow spheres, which accompanies a remarkable particle size change. Both the micellization and the structure transition were found to be reversible and associated with H-bonding complexation between the main chain and grafts.
Hierarchically Responsive Alternating Nano‐Copolymers with Tailored Interparticle Bonds

Abstract:Self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) is an essential tool for constructing structured materials with a wide range of applications. However, achieving ordered assembly structures with externally programmable properties in binary NP systems remains challenging. In this work, we assemble binary inorganic NPs into hierarchically pH-responsive alternating copolymer-like nanostructures in an aqueous medium by engineering the interparticle electrostatic interactions. The polymer-grafted NPs bearing opposite charges are viewed as nanoscale monomers ("nanomers"), and copolymerized into alternating nano-copolymers (ANCPs) driven by the formation of interparticle "bonds" between nanomers. The resulting ANCPs exhibit reversibly responsive "bond" length (i.e., the distance between nanomers) in response to the variation of pH in a range of ~7-10, allowing precise control over the surface plasmon resonance of ANCPs. Moreover, specific interparticle "bonds" can break up at pH ≥ 11, leading to the dis-assembly of ANCPs into molecule-like dimers and trimers. These dimeric and trimeric structures can reassemble to form ANCPs owing to the resuming of interparticle "bonds", when the pH value of the solution changes from 11 to 7. The hierarchically responsive nanostructures may find applications in such as biosensing, optical waveguide, and electronic devices.

Abstract:Nanoscale assemblies with stimuli-sensitive features have attracted significant attention due to implications in a variety of areas ranging from materials to biology. Recently, there have been excellent developments in obtaining nanoscale structures that are concurrently sensitive to multiple stimuli. Such nanostructures are primarily focused on a single nanostructure containing an appropriate combination of functional groups within the nanostructure. In this work, we outline a simple approach to bring together two disparate supramolecular assemblies that exhibit very different stimuli-sensitive characteristics. These composite nanostructures comprise a block copolymer micelle core and nanogel shell, both of which can preserve their respective morphology and stimulus sensitivities. The block copolymer is based on poly(2-(diisopropylamino) ethylmethacrylate-b-2-aminoethylmethacrylate hydrochloride), which contains a pH-sensitive hydrophobic block. Similarly, the redox-sensitive nanogel is derived from a poly(oligoethyleneglycolmonomethylethermethacrylate-co-glycidylmethacrylate-co-pyridyldisulfide ethylmethacrylate) based random copolymer. In addition to the independent pH-response of the micellar core and redox-sensitivity of the nanogel shell in the composite nanostructures, the synergy between the micelles and the nanogels have been demonstrated through a robust charge generation in the nanogels during the disassembly of the micelles. The supramolecular assembly and disassembly have been characterized using transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurements, fluorescence spectroscopy and cellular uptake.
A novel hybrid random copolymer poly(MAPOSS- co -NIPAM- co -OEGMA- co -2VP): Synthesis, characterization, self-assembly behaviors and multiple responsive properties

Abstract:A novel organic/inorganic hybrid amphiphilic random copolymer poly(methacrylate isobutyl POSS- co -N-isopropylacrylamide- co -oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate- co -2-vinylpyridine), poly(MAPOSS- co -NIPAM- co -OEGMA- co -2VP), was synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The self-assembly behavior of random copolymers in aqueous solution was investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicate the novel random copolymer in water could self-assemble into spherical aggregates and the self-aggregate size displays a remarkable dependence on pH. The stimuli-responsive characteristics of these assembles were tested by means of UV-vis spectra, DLS and TEM. There is a critic Zn 2+ concentration over which the aggregates can be coordinated into well-define spherical aggregate clusters. The critic Zn 2+ concentration can be tuned finely through adjusting solution concentration or 2VP amount. Results from UV-vis and DLS reveal that the copolymer solutions exhibit a sharp and intensive lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Some factors such as the solution concentration, molecular weight, pH and copolymer generation, which could affect the cloud point, were studied systematically. The essentially predetermined LCST can be achieved by altering the content of 2VP or pH. In addition, these novel hybrid aggregates can undergo an association/disassociation cycle with the heating and cooling of solution and the degree of reversibility shows a strong concentration dependence. As a novel organic-inorganic hybrid material which can respond to multiple external stimuli including temperature, pH, metal ions with sharp stimuli-responsive behaviors, it is potentially used for biomedicine, catalysis, diagnostics, bioseparations, biosensors and for fundamental investigation.

Abstract:This work describes the design and preparation of a simple but novel hybrid amphiphile containing a pH-responsive DNA sequence. The formation of a bimolecular i-motif structure allows the control of reversible switching of the hybrid amphiphile between the dimer and unimer by pH. Thus, spherical aggregates with distinct self-assembly pathways, sizes and structures are obtained at pH 4.5 and pH 9.0, and the structures can be switched by the change of pH and thermal annealing. This work reports different self-assembled nanostructures and their transitions that give this amphiphile potential for the design of controllable drug delivery systems.

Abstract:Thermo-responsive hybrid nanoparticles composed of silica-core and poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) P(DMAEMA-co-NIPAM) copolymer-shell were prepared through a one-pot surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique. The well-defined core-shell hybrid nanoparticles with copolymer shell of uniform thickness were revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thermo-responsive behavior of the hybrid nanoparticles in aqueous solutions was evaluated through combined techniques, including ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis. Interestingly, pH-modulated LCST behavior with diverse aggregation processes can be observed. Specifically, the random copolymer grafted nanoparticles presented an LCST behavior with one-step transition process of shrink in acidic solution, a double LCST behavior with three-step transition process of shrink-shrink-aggregation in neutral solution, and a double LCST behavior with two-step transition process of assembly-shrink/aggregation in basic solution. The difference was attributed to the pH-modulated imbalances of electrostatic repulsion and hydrophobic interaction of the attached copolymer chains. Overall, these results disclose that pH and temperature can act as efficient modulators for the programmable control and fine-tuning of the morphology and aggregate size of the core-shell functionalized nanoparticles.

Abstract:Responsive polymeric micelles have been widely studied because of their potential use in nanocontainers and nanocarriers. In this study, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) end-capped poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (POSS-PDMAEMA), a stimuli-responsive organic-inorganic hybrid polymer, was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using POSS-Br as a macroinitiator. The self-assembly behaviors of POSS-PDMAEMA in aqueous solution were studied by fluorescence probe, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed two self-assembly processes of POSS-PDMAEMA. First they self-assembled into a single micelle with the POSS molecules forming a crystal core and the PDMAEMA chains stretching as a corona. Then the single micelles, as building blocks, were able to reversibly form a hierarchical micelle-on-micelle structure (complex micelle) under external stimuli.
Physiological Ph-Triggered Morphological Transition of Amphiphilic Block Copolymer Self-Assembly

Abstract:In order to develop polymeric self-assembly with an intelligent morphological transition property under appropriate stimuli, a series of pH-sensitive amphiphilic block copolymers have been prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Due to the delicately designed macromolecular structure, poly(ethylene glycol) 44 - b -poly(2-diisopropylaminoethyl methacrylate) 15 (PEG 44 - b -PDPA 15 ) could form self-assemblies with a controllable morphological transition in response to the physiological pH changes. As demonstrated by the results of dynamic light scattering (DLS) records and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs, PEG 44 - b -PDPA 15 could self-assemble into toruloid aggregates arranged by several single micelles at pH 7.4, but the morphology changed into uniform single micelles at pH 6.5. With a further decrease of pH value to 5.5, PEG- b -PDPA became double hydrophilic and could not self-assemble into any nanostructure. Therefore, this block copolymer provides a feasible approach to construct a nanoscale smart self-assembly with adjustable morphologies, which exhibits its potential for biomedical applications with specific physiological pH stimuli, such as intracellular delivery and tumor therapy.

Abstract:A novel POSS-containing methacrylate monomer (HEMAPOSS) was fabricated by extending the side chain between polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) unit and methacrylate group, which can efficiently decrease the steric hindrance in free-radical polymerization of POSS-methacrylate monomer. POSS-containing homopolymers (PHEMAPOSS) with a higher degree of polymerization (DP) can be prepared using HEMAPOSS monomer via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. PHEMAPOSS was further used as the macro-RAFT agent to construct a series of amphiphilic POSS-containing poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers, PHEMAPOSS-b-PDMAEMA. PHEMAPOSS-b-PDMAEMA block copolymers can self-assemble into a plethora of morphologies ranging from irregular assembled aggregates to core-shell spheres and further from complex spheres (pearl-necklace-liked structure) to large compound vesicles. The thermo-and pH-responsive behaviors of the micelles were also investigated by dynamic laser scattering, UV spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM. The results reveal the reversible transition of the assembled morphologies from spherical micelles to complex micelles was realized through acid-base control. (C) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Self-assembly and associated dynamic and reversible non-covalent interactions are the basis of protein biochemistry (e.g., protein folding) and development of sophisticated nanomaterial systems that can respond to and amplify biological signals. In this study, we report a systematic investigation of non-covalent interactions that affect the pH responsive behaviors and resulting supramolecular self-assembly of a series of ultra-pH sensitive (UPS) block copolymers. Increase of hydrophobic and π-π stacking interactions led to the decrease of pKa values. In contrast, enhancement of direct ionic binding between cationic ammonium groups and anionic counter ions gave rise to increased pKa. Moreover, hydration of hydrophobic surfaces and hydrogen bonding interactions may also play a role in the self-assembly process. The key parameters capable of controlling the subtle interplay of different non-covalent bonds in pH-triggered self-assembly of UPS copolymers are likely to offer molecular insights to understand other stimuli-responsive nanosystems. Selective and precise implementation of non-covalent interactions in stimuli-responsive self-assembly processes will provide powerful and versatile tools for the development of dynamic, complex nanostructures with predictable and tunable transitions.

Dynamic Self-Assembly of Coordination Polymers in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:The construction of supramolecular polymers has been intensively pursued because the nanostructures formed through weak non-covalent interactions can be triggered by external stimuli leading to smart materials and sensors. Self-assemblies of coordination polymers consisting of metal ions and organic ligands in aqueous solution also provide particular contributions in this area. The main motivation for developing those coordination polymers originates from the value-added combination between metal ions and ligands. This review highlights the recent progress of the dynamic self-assembly of coordination polymers that result from the sophisticated molecular design, towards fabricating stimuli-responsive systems and bio-related materials. Dynamic structural changes and switchable physical properties triggered by various stimuli are summarized. Finally, the outlook for aqueous nanostructures originated from the dynamic self-assembly of coordination polymers is also presented.

Abstract:This work demonstrates the formation of micrometer-sized supramolecular assemblies with tunable morphologies using a homopolymer, poly( 4-vinylpyridine), and a small organic acid, 5,7-dodecadiynedioic acid, as the building molecules. Three different morphologies ( hollow spheres, solid spheres, and rods) were obtained, depending on the molar ratio of the building molecules. It is proposed that hydrogen bonding between P4VP and DCDA and the pi-pi stacking of the diacetylenic moieties are responsible for the formation of these assemblies. Interestingly, ordered hexagonal and lamellar mesostructures were also formed within the microstructure during the co-assembly process. As a result, UV irradiation of the supramolecular assemblies polymerized the diacetylenic moieties, resulting in cross-linked and responsive blue polydiacetylenic assemblies that can change color to red upon external stimuli ( e. g., thermal stimuli). This work provides a novel concept of the synthesis of responsive supramolecular assemblies from a homopolymer and small organic molecules.

Abstract:The coassembly behavior of thermoresponsive statistical copolymers and a double hydrophilic block copolymer having a permanently hydrophilic block and a thermoresponsive block is investigated. By adjusting the hydrophilicity of the thermoresponsive statistical copolymers, hybrid nanoparticles are obtained with various ratios of the two species. Importantly, the size of these nanoparticles can be controlled in between 40 and 250 nm dependent on the To, and the amount of statistical copolymers in the solution. Simultaneous analysis of static and dynamic light scattering data indicates that the possible structure of nanoparticles varies from hard sphere to less compact architecture and most probably depends on a difference between cloud point temperatures of individual components. This developed coassembly method provides a simple platform for the preparation of defined polymeric nanoparticles.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive smart supramolecular self-assembly with controllable morphology and adjustable rheological property has attracted widespread concern of scientists in recent years due to the great potential application in microfluidics, controlled release, biosensors and so on. In this study, a pH and UV light dual stimuli-responsive system was constructed by combining Gemini surfactant 2-hydroxyl-propanediyl-α,ω-bis(dimethyldodecyl ammonium bromide) (12-3(OH)-12·2Br-) with trans-ortho-hydroxyl cinnamic acid (trans-OHCA) in aqueous solution. The phase behavior and stimuli-responsive behavior of the system including the microstructural transition, rheological property, intermolecular interaction, and isomerization reaction were explored by various experiment techniques such as rheometer, UV-vis spectrum, polarized optical microscopy (POM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) as well as theoretical calculation. The system displays abundant phase behaviors that supramolecular self-assemblies of different morphologies in different states such as spherical micelle, wormlike micelle, lamellar liquid crystal, and aqueous two phase system (ATPS) were observed even at lower concentration, which provide the research basis on the abundant stimuli-responsiveness of the system. The results prove that the multiple ionization and the photo-isomerization of trans-OHCA endow the system with plentiful responses to pH and UV light stimuli. It is expected that this study on the dual stimuli-responsive system with abundant self-assembly behaviors and adjustable rheological behaviors would be of theoretical and practical importance, which would provide essential guidance in designing and constructing smart materials with multiple stimuli-responses.
