Abstract:Colloidal matter exhibits unique collective behaviors beyond what occurs at single-nanoparticle and atomic scales. Treating colloidal particles as building blocks, researchers are exploiting new strategies to rationally organize colloidal particles into complex structures for new functions and devices. Despite tremendous progress in directed assembly and self-assembly, a truly versatile assembly technique without specific functionalization of the colloidal particles remains elusive. We develop a new strategy to assemble colloidal matter under a lightcontrolled temperature field, which can solve challenges in the existing assembly techniques. By adding an anionic surfactant (that is, cetyltrimethylammonium chloride), which serves as a surface charge source, a macro ion, and a micellar depletant, we generate a light-controlled thermoelectric field to manipulate colloidal atoms and a depletion attraction force to assemble the colloidal atoms into two-dimensional (2D) colloidal matter. The general applicability of this opto-thermophoretic assembly (OTA) strategy allows us to build colloidal matter of diverse colloidal sizes (from subwavelength scale to micrometer scale) and materials (polymeric, dielectric, and metallic colloids) with versatile configurations and tunable bonding strengths and lengths. We further demonstrate that the incorporation of the thermoelectric field into the optical radiation force can achieve 3D reconfiguration of the colloidal matter. The OTA strategy releases the rigorous design rules required in the existing assembly techniques and enriches the structural complexity in colloidal matter, which will open a new window of opportunities for basic research on matter organization, advanced material design, and applications.
A Conceptual Framework to Understand the Self-Assembly of Chemically Active Colloids.

Abstract:Colloids that generate chemicals, or "chemically active colloids", can interact with their neighbors and generate patterns via forces arising from such chemical gradients. Examples of such assemblies of chemically active colloids are abundant in the literature, but a unified theoretical framework is needed to rationalize the scattered results. Combining experiments, theory, Brownian dynamics, and finite element simulations, we present here a conceptual framework for understanding how immotile, yet chemically active, colloids assemble. This framework is based on the principle of ionic diffusiophoresis and diffusioosmosis and predicts that a chemically active colloid interacts with its neighbors through short- and long-range interactions that can be either repulsive or attractive, depending on the relative diffusivity of the released cations and anions, and the relative zeta potential of a colloidal particle and the planar surface on which it resides. As a result, 4 types of pairwise interactions arise, leading to 4 different types of colloidal assemblies with distinct patterns. Using short-range attraction and long-range attraction (SALR) systems as an example, we show quantitative agreement between the framework and experiments. The framework is then applied to rationalize a wide range of patterns assembled from chemically active colloids in the literature exhibiting other types of pairwise interactions. In addition, the framework can predict what the assembly looks like with minimal experimental information and help infer ionic diffusivity and zeta potential values in systems where these values are inaccessible. Our results represent a solid step toward building a complete theory for understanding and controlling chemically active colloids, from the molecular level to their mesoscopic superstructures and ultimately to the macroscopic properties of the assembled materials.
Catalytic-assembly of Programmable Atom Equivalents.

Abstract:Escape from metastable states in self-assembly of colloids is an intractable problem. Unlike the commonly adopted approach of thermal annealing, the recently developed enthalpy-mediated strategy provided a different option to address this dilemma in a dynamically controllable manner at room temperature. However, it required a complex catalytic-assembly DNA strand-displacement circuitry to mediate interaction between multiple components. In this work, we present a simple but effective way to achieve catalytic-assembly of DNA-functionalized colloidal nanoparticles, i.e., programmable atom equivalents, in a far-from-equilibrium system. A removable molecule named "catassembler" that acts as a catalyst was employed to rectify imperfect linkages and help the system escape from metastability without affecting the assembled framework. Notably, catalytic efficiency of the catassembler can be effectively improved by changing the seesaw catassembler in toehold length design or numbers of the repeat units. Leveraging this tractable catalytic-assembly approach, different ordered architectures were easily produced by directly mixing all reactants, as in chemical reactions. By switching bonding identities, solid-solid phase transformations between different colloidal crystals were achieved. This work opens up an avenue for programming colloid assembly in a far-from-equilibrium system.

Abstract:Most synthetic self-assemblies grow indefinitely into size-unlimited structures, whereas some biological self-assemblies autonomously regulate their size and shape. One mechanism of such self-regulation arises from the chirality of building blocks, inducing their mutual twisting that is incompatible with their long-range ordered packing and thus halts the assembly's growth at a certain stage. This self-regulation occurs robustly in thermodynamic equilibrium rather than kinetic trapping, and therefore is attractive yet elusive. Until now, studies of self-regulating assemblies have focused on non-responsive systems, whose equilibrium point and corresponding size and shape are hardly changeable. Here, we demonstrate a stimuli-responsive, self-regulating assembly. This assembly consists of chiral and magnetically orientable nanorods, where the effective chirality can be changed by balancing chirality-induced twisting and magnet-induced flattening between nanorods. Consequently, the strength of self-regulation in the assembly is modulable by magnetic field intensity, allowing robust, tunable, and reversible control of its size and shape. Our strategy would provide more biomimetic materials with precision and responsiveness.

Abstract:Realizing programmable assembly and reconfiguration of small objects holds promise for technologically-significant applications in such fields as micromechanical systems, biomedical devices, and metamaterials. Although capillary forces have been successfully explored to assemble objects with specific shapes into ordered structures on the liquid surface, reconfiguring these assembled structures on demand remains a challenge. Here we report a strategy, bioinspired by Anurida maritima, to actively reconfigure assembled structures with well-defined selectivity, directionality, robustness, and restorability. This approach, taking advantage of optocapillarity induced by photodeformation of floating liquid crystal polymer actuators, not only achieves programmable and reconfigurable two-dimensional assembly, but also uniquely enables the formation of three-dimensional structures with tunable architectures and topologies across multiple fluid interfaces. This work demonstrates a versatile approach to tailor capillary interaction by optics, as well as a straightforward bottom-up fabrication platform for a wide range of applications.
Transient Colloidal Crystals Fueled by Electrochemical Reaction Products

Abstract:Conventional directed colloidal assembly enables fabricating complex hierarchical structures using external stimuli like electric fields, but lacks control over the assembly state in time. Chemical reaction networks have been discovered that transiently assemble colloids; however, they have slow dynamics (hrs – days) and poor temporal tunability, utilize complex reagents, and produce kinetically trapped states. Here we demonstrate transient colloidal crystals that autonomously form, breakup, and reconstitute in response to an electrochemical reaction network driven by a time invariant electrical stimulus. Aqueous mixtures of micron sized colloids and para-benzoquinone (BQ) were subject to superimposed oscillatory and steady electric potentials, i.e., multimode potentials, that induced electrokinetic flows around colloids and proton-coupled BQ redox reactions. We demonstrate wide tunability of transient assembly state lifetimes over nearly two orders of magnitude from 1 - 500 s by modifying the steady component of the multimode potential and electrode separation. Transient assembly states coincided with electrochemically generated pH spikes near the cathode. An electrochemical transport model showed that interaction of advancing acidic and alkaline pH fronts from anodic BQ oxidation and cathodic BQ reduction caused pH transients. We present theoretical and experimental evidence that indicates transient colloidal crystals were mediated by competition between opposing colloidal scale electrohydrodynamic and electroosmotic flows, the latter of which is pH dependent.

Abstract:Colloidal systems find important applications ranging from fabrication of photonic crystals to direct probing of phenomena typically encountered in atomic crystals and glasses. New applications - such as nanoantennas, plasmonic sensors, and nanocircuits - pose a challenge of achieving sparse colloidal assemblies with tunable interparticle separations that can be controlled at will. We demonstrate reconfigurable multiscale interactions and assembly of colloids mediated by defects in cholesteric liquid crystals that are probed by means of laser manipulation and three-dimensional imaging. We find that colloids attract via distance-independent elastic interactions when pinned to the ends of cholesteric oily streaks, line defects at which one or more layers are interrupted. However, dislocations and oily streaks can also be optically manipulated to induce kinks, allowing one to lock them into the desired configurations that are stabilized by elastic energy barriers for structural transformation of the particle-connecting defects. Under the influence of elastic energy landscape due to these defects, sublamellar-sized colloids self-assemble into structures mimicking the cores of dislocations and oily streaks. Interactions between these defect embedded colloids can be varied from attractive to repulsive by optically introducing dislocation kinks. The reconfigurable nature of defect-particle interactions allows for patterning of defects by manipulation of colloids and, in turn, patterning of particles by these defects, thus achieving desired colloidal configurations on scales ranging from the size of defect core to the sample size. This defect-colloidal sculpturing may be extended to other lamellar media, providing the means for optically guided self-assembly of mesoscopic composites with predesigned properties.

Abstract:In this work, we propose and demonstrate a dynamic colloidal molecule that is capable of moving autonomously and performing swift, reversible, and in-place assembly dissociation in a high accuracy by manipulating a TiO2/Pt Janus micromotor with light irradiation. Due to the efficient motion of the TiO2/Pt Janus motor and the light-switchable electrostatic interactions between the micromotor and colloidal particles, the colloidal particles can be captured and assembled one by one on the fly, subsequently forming into swimming colloidal molecules by mimicking space-filling models of simple molecules with central atoms. The as-demonstrated dynamic colloidal molecules have a configuration accurately controlled and stabilized by regulating the time-dependent intensity of UV light, which controls the stop-and-go motion of the colloidal molecules. The dynamic colloidal molecules are dissociated when the light irradiation is turned off due to the disappearance of light-switchable electrostatic interaction between the motor and the colloidal particles. The strategy for the assembly of dynamic colloidal molecules is applicable to various charged colloidal particles. The simulated optical properties of a dynamic colloidal molecule imply that the results here may provide a novel approach for in-place building functional microdevices, such as microlens arrays, in a swift and reversible manner.
Dynamic Surfactants Drive Anisotropic Colloidal Assembly

Abstract:Colloidal building blocks with re-configurable shapes and dynamic interactions can exhibit unusual self-assembly behaviors and pathways. In this work, we consider the phase behavior of colloids coated with surface-mobile polymer brushes that behave as "dynamic surfactants." Unlike traditional polymer-grafted colloids, we show that colloids coated with dynamic surfactants can acquire anisotropic macroscopic assemblies, even for spherical colloids with isotropic attractive interactions. We use Brownian Dynamics simulations and dynamic density functional theory (DDFT) to demonstrate that time-dependent reorganization of the dynamic surfactants leads to phase diagrams with anisotropic assemblies. We observed that the microscopic polymer distributions impose unique geometric constraints between colloids that control their packing into lamellar, string, and vesicle phases. Our work may help discover versatile building blocks and provide extensive design freedom for assembly out of thermodynamic equilibrium.

Abstract:Light‐responsive and shape‐tunable hybrid colloids have been synthesized. When exposed to UV light, these colloids can self‐assemble into distinct lattices determined by their shapes. Additionally, the colloids can form chain‐like structures by increasing the interparticle attractions. This work presents a novel and effective strategy for controllable colloidal self‐assembly, which holds promise for the fabrication of hierarchical colloidal materials. The shape‐dictated self‐assembly of hybrid colloids induced by chemical concentration gradients generated by photocatalytic reactions of the colloids is studied. Different shapes enable the formation of assemblies with distinct lattice structures including hexagons, distorted hexagons, and squares, which are corroborated by computer simulations. Furthermore, assemblies change from lattices to chains when increasing the attraction between the colloids. The results show that photoresponsive hybrid colloids possess a unique capability for shape‐dependent self‐assembly, offering a practical and versatile approach to manipulate self‐assembly at the microscale.

Abstract:Magnetic colloidal chains are a microrobotic system with promising applications due to their versatility, biocompatibility, and ease of manipulation under magnetic fields. Their synthesis involves kinetic pathways that control chain quality, length, and flexibility, a process performed by first aligning superparamagnetic particles under a one-dimensional magnetic field and then chemically linking them using a four-armed maleimide-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol). Here, we systematically vary the concentration of the poly(ethylene glycol) linkers, the reaction temperature, and the magnetic field strength to study their impact on the physical properties of synthesized chains, including the chain length distribution, reaction temperature, and bending modulus. We find that this chain fabrication process resembles step-growth polymerization and can be accurately described by the Flory-Schulz model. Under optimized experimental conditions, we have successfully synthesized long flexible colloidal chains with a bending modulus, which is 4 orders of magnitude smaller than previous studies. Such flexible and long chains can be folded entirely into concentric rings and helices with multiple turns, demonstrating the potential for investigating the actuation, assembly, and folding behaviors of these colloidal polymer analogues.

Abstract:Dissipative self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles offers the prospect of creating reconfigurable artificial materials and systems, yet the phenomenon only occurs far from thermodynamic equilibrium. Therefore, it is usually difficult to predict and control. Here, a dissipative colloidal solution system, where anisotropic chains with different interparticle separations in two perpendicular directions transiently arise among largely disordered silver nanoparticles illuminated by a laser beam, is reported. The optical field creates a nonequilibrium dissipative state, where a disorder-to-order transition occurs driven by anisotropic electrodynamic interactions coupled with electrostatic interactions. Investigation of the temporal dynamics and spatial arrangements of the nanoparticle system shows that the optical binding strength and entropy of the system are two crucial parameters for the formation of the anisotropic chains and responsible for adaptive behaviors, such as self-replication of dimer units. Formation of anisotropic nanoparticle chains is also observed among colloidal nanoparticles made from other metal (e.g., Au), polymer (e.g., polystyrene), ceramic (e.g., CeO<sub>2</sub> ), and hybrid materials (e.g., SiO<sub>2</sub> @Au core-shell), suggesting that light-driven self-organization will provide a wide range of opportunities to discover new dissipative structures under thermal fluctuations and build novel anisotropic materials with nanoscale order.

Abstract:Colloidal molecules (CMs) assembled from plasmonic nanoparticles are an emerging class of building blocks for creating plasmonic materials and devices, but precise yet reversible assembly of plasmonic CMs remains a challenge. This communication describes the reversible self-assembly of binary plasmonic nanoparticles capped with complementary copolymer ligands into different CMs via halogen bonding interactions at high yield. The coordination number of the CMs is governed by the number ratio of complementary halogen donor and acceptor groups on the interacting nanoparticles. The reversibility of the halogen bonds allows for controlling the repeated formation and disassociation of the plasmonic CMs and hence their optical properties. Furthermore, the CMs can be designed to further self-assemble into complex structures in selective solvents. The precisely engineered reversible nanostructures may find applications in sensing, catalysis, and smart optoelectronic devices.
Active self-assembly of colloidal machines with passive rotational parts via coordination of phoresis and osmosis

Abstract:The organization of microscopic objects into specific structures with movable parts is a prerequisite for building sophisticated micromachines with complex functions, as exemplified by their macroscopic counterparts. Here we report the self-assembly of active and passive colloids into micromachinery with passive rotational parts. Depending on the attachment of the active colloid to a substrate, which varies the degrees of free freedom of the assembly, colloidal machines with rich internal rotational dynamics are realized. Energetic analysis reveals that the energy efficiency increases with the degrees of freedom of the machine. The experimental results can be rationalized by the cooperation of phoretic interaction and osmotic flow encoded in the shape of the active colloid, which site-specifically binds and exerts a torque to passive colloids, supported by finite element calculations and mesoscale simulations. Our work offers a new design principle that utilizes nonequilibrium interfacial phenomena for spontaneous construction of multiple-component reconfigurable micromachinery.

Abstract:We report that triangular gold nanoprisms in the presence of attractive depletion forces and repulsive electrostatic forces assemble into equilibrium one-dimensional lamellar crystals in solution with interparticle spacings greater than four times the thickness of the nanoprisms. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the anomalously large d spacings of the lamellar superlattices are due to a balance between depletion and electrostatic interactions, both of which arise from the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The effects of surfactant concentration, temperature, ionic strength of the solution, and prism edge length on the lattice parameters have been investigated and provide a variety of tools for in situ modulation of these colloidal superstructures. Additionally, we demonstrate a purification procedure based on our observations that can be used to efficiently separate triangular nanoprisms from spherical nanoparticles formed concomitantly during their synthesis.

Abstract:Abstract Controlled self-assembly of colloidal particles into predetermined organization facilitates the bottom-up manufacture of artificial materials with designated hierarchies and synergistically integrated functionalities. However, it remains a major challenge to assemble individual nanoparticles with minimal building instructions in a programmable fashion due to the lack of directional interactions. Here, we develop a general paradigm for controlled co-assembly of soft block copolymer micelles and simple unvarnished hard nanoparticles through variable noncovalent interactions, including hydrogen bonding and coordination interactions. Upon association, the hairy micelle corona binds with the hard nanoparticles with a specific valence depending exactly on their relative size and feeding ratio. This permits the integration of block copolymer micelles with a diverse array of hard nanoparticles with tunable chemistry into multidimensional colloidal molecules and polymers. Secondary co-assembly of the resulting colloidal molecules further leads to the formation of more complex hierarchical colloidal superstructures. Notably, such colloidal assembly is processible on surface either through initiating the alternating co-assembly from a micelle immobilized on a substrate or directly grafting a colloidal oligomer onto the micellar anchor.
