Abstract:This paper focuses on exploring a quantitative approach to mapping street space. Characteristics of street space can hardly be described and explained using only the traditional architectural forms of street space. The difficulty arises because of the lack of relevance between these forms and people’s activities in them. This phenomenon presents a challenge to mapping methods. Expanding mapping elements is one viable and ongoing path. Which element could be an effective one and how it should be measured and mapped, are vital questions. Interface signs have been selected as the experimental elements, with an area of central Nanjing selected as the research sample. Database and statistics of interface signs and pedestrian flows have been established and inserted into the GIS (Geographical Information System) where a series of correlation analyses between basic mappings and pedestrian flows are carried out.

Abstract:The theory and methods of space syntax can help to rebalance the prevailing cultural perspective, which views maps as ideological representations, with an analytical approach that emphasizes maps as sources for understanding space and spatial relationships embedded in built forms. The quantitative descriptions of urban street networks produced by space syntax analyses can be used to formulate and test hypotheses about patterns of urban movement, encounter and socio-economic activity in the past that can help in the interpretation of other historical source materials to give an overall account of urban spatial culture. In this article, the authors explain how space syntax, a theory and method originally developed in the field of architectural research, is making a distinctive contribution to research in social and urban history. The key principles of the method are explained by clarifying the relationship of space syntax to HGIS (Historical Geographical Information Systems) and through a worked example of research undertaken into political meeting places. A survey of research into the urban history of the nineteenth-century city using space syntax is used to highlight a number of important methodological themes and also demonstrates the range of innovative contributions that this interdisciplinary approach is able to advance. A final, theoretical, section reflects on maps and the practice of 'mapping' from a space syntax perspective.

Abstract:With the rapid development of communication and transportation technologies, the urban area is increasingly becoming an ever more dynamic, comprehensive, and complex system. Meanwhile, functional polycentricity as a distinctive feature has been characterizing urban areas around the world. However, the spatial structure of the urban area has yet to be fully comprehended from a dynamic perspective, and understanding the spatial organization of polycentric urban regions (PUR) is crucial for issues related to urban planning, traffic control, and urban risk management. The analysis of polycentricity strongly depends on the spatial scale. In order to identify functional polycentricity at the intra-unban scale, this paper presents a traffic flow-embedded and topic modeling-based methodology framework. This framework was evaluated on real-world datasets from the Wujiang district, Suzhou, China, which contains 151,419 records of taxi trajectory data and 86,036 records of points of interest (POI) data. This paper provides a novel approach to examining urban functional polycentricity via combining urban function distribution and spatial interactions. This proposed methodology can help urban authorities better understand urban dynamics in terms of function distribution and internal connectedness and facilitate urban development in terms of urban planning and traffic control.

Abstract:In 1748, Giambattista Nolli published a large map of Rome, which accurately depicted the form and system of public space in the city. This graphic presentation has become a powerful tool for urban space research. However, given the increasingly abundant types of contemporary urban spaces and diverse functions of public buildings, the application of the drawing principle of the Nolli map to contemporary cities remains uncertain. Taking the Laochengnan area in Nanjing as an example, this study investigates the mapping of urban public spaces based on the Nolli map method. On the basis of a field survey, the public and private spaces in the blocks are identified. By comparing the graphic information of the Nolli map and that of the Nolli-type map in terms of public, private, and green spaces, this work also reveals the similarities and differences between traditional and modern urban spaces. Urban spatial mapping methods, including the figure-ground map, street map, and Nolli-type map, are explored and compared using complementary mapping techniques. The practicality and effectiveness of each technique are also discussed. Results show that the Nolli map method is effective in mapping contemporary urban public spaces and provides an effective tool for urban designers and architects to depict and analyze urban public spaces.

The Comparison Between Two Cognitive Map Externalization Methods:A Case Study of Beijing

Abstract:At present,there are two dominant methods,multidimensional scaling(MDS) and sketch map,to externalize human's internal cognitive map.In order to study the similarities and distinctions between MDS configuration and sketch map,the authors conducted an experiment on Beijing residents by requesting a sketch of the region within Three Ring and meanwhile extracting distance estimates between eight landmarks.With preprocessing to eliminate errors,both results are adjusted to the same geographic coordination.Employing the bidimensional regression along with standard deviational ellipse,the authors compared the local and global distortions between two kinds of cognitive maps.It implies that the sketch map is more consistent with the real map,while distortion orientations of sketch map are similar to those of MDS configuration.Additionally,the authors provide advices for future usage of two methods.

Abstract:As an emerging field, cognitive map kept playing a significant role in geography these decades. To date, there are two dominant methods to externalize human's internal cognitive map, namely, multidimensional scaling (MDS) and skech mapping. However, among most recent researches on cognitive map, the differences between both methods are always ignored. The usage of one method over another is still under scrutiny. In order to shed light on the similarity or distinctions of MDS configuration and sketch mapping, we conducted an experiment on Beijing residents by requesting a sketch of the region within 3rd Ring and meanwhile extracting distance estimates between 8 landmarks. Employing the Bidimensional regression along with standard deviational ellipse, we studied the global and local distortions among two kinds of cognitive maps and quantitatively measure the overall and local cognitive maps distortions. Besides, we use Monte Carlo simulation method to calculate the radius of distortion for the Distortion Index (DI). It shows that the average cognitive distortion of habitants in Beijing is 2km to 3km, and the distortion takes 2nd-ring road as a border, displaying a southwest-northeast diagonal stretch and an east-west contracted tendency. The distortion in the two methods is remarkably both correlated with factors, such as travel frequency and years of residence. Comparing two methods, it turned out that sketch map was more consistent with real map, while the distortion orientations of sketch map resembled MDS configuration. Finally, we gave possible reasons with regard to above conclusions and advices for future usage of two methods.

Abstract:Geographic information and the mapping analysis of scientific knowledge have proven to be effective for the management and monitoring of built heritage. To understand built heritage and the urban cultural space, this study incorporates the following integrated data: public surveys, researchers' knowledge graphs, and urban map information. Firstly, the urban map of Quanzhou is used to analyze the spatial distribution of cultural heritage points. Secondly, Citespace literature co-citation analysis technology is used to establish a preliminary evaluation index of urban culture governance. Thirdly, a questionnaire survey was conducted on the creative economy and urban culture space, and a theoretical model of the urban culture ecosystem was established using Amos software, which includes six dimensions of "cultural inclusiveness, cultural sustainability, cultural integrity, cultural creativity, and cultural vitality". Finally, a comparative analysis is conducted on the number of visitors to different types of cultural public spaces in Quanzhou City. The results show that exemplary local knowledge and deep historical memory are core elements for building an ideal cultural ecosystem and are necessary to promote cities toward a sustainable future.

Abstract:This paper examines the contributions of mapping research to critical qualitative research methodology. Mapping research is introduced, along with its history, the prevalence of geo- and socio-spatial theoretical frameworks used with the methodology, and the predominant framing of mapping research in the field of education. The main goal of this paper is to share some of the wide variety of approaches to mapping research to help scholars understand where the methodology comes from, where it is going, as well as its scope, strengths, limitations, and possibilities for critical qualitative research. Three diverse examples of mapping research are analysed in detail with attention given to their theoretical and methodological contexts, prompts and generated artefacts, as well as strengths and limitations.

Adaptation and Self-Organizing Systems

Abstract:Kevin Lynch proposed a theory of the image of the city identifying five elements that make the city legible or imageable. The resulting mental map of the city was conventionally derived through some qualitative processes, relying on interactions with city residents to ask them to recall city elements from their minds. This paper proposes a process by which the image of the city can be quantitatively derived automatically using computer technology and geospatial databases of the city. This method is substantially based on and inspired by Christopher Alexander's living structure and Nikos Salingaros' structural order, as a city with the living structure or structural order tends to be legible and imageable. With the increasing availability of geographic information of urban environments at very fine scales or resolutions (for example, trajectories data about human activities), the proposal or solution described in this paper is particularly timely and relevant for urban studies and architectural design. Keywords: Mental maps, head/tail division rule, legibility, imageability, power law, scaling, and hierarchy.

Abstract:Achieving the aim of Digital Urban Design relies on an established framework which integrated research and design methods. This paper presents an urban renewal project in Sanyanglu area in Wuhan. It focuses on the way space syntax model connecting multi-source data such as web-open data, drone video and fieldwork survey. This data-based spatial model is used at different scales ranging from city to neighborhood. It is also used at various stage of designing processes from concept design, option testing and optimization.

Abstract:Urban spatial perception critically influences human behavior and emotional reactions, emphasizing the necessity of aligning urban spaces with human needs for enhanced urban living. However, functionality-based categorization of urban architecture is prone to biases, stemming from disparities between objective mapping and subjective perception. These biases can result in urban planning and designs that fail to cater adequately to the needs and preferences of city residents, negatively impacting their quality of life and the city's overall functionality. This research scrutinizes the perceptual biases and disparities in architectural function distribution within urban spaces, with a particular focus on Shanghai's central urban district. The study employs machine learning to clarify these biases within urban spatial perception research, utilizing a tripartite methodology: objective mapping, subjective perception analysis, and perception deviation assessment. The study revealed significant discrepancies in the distribution centroids between commercial buildings and residential or public buildings. This result illuminates the spatial organization characteristics of urban architectural functions, serving as a valuable reference for urban planning and development. Furthermore, it uncovers the advantages and disadvantages of different data sources and techniques in interpreting urban spatial perception, paving the way for a more comprehensive understanding of the subject. Our findings underscore the need for urban planning strategies that align with human perceptual needs, thereby enhancing the quality of the urban environment and fostering a more habitable and sustainable urban space. The study's implications suggest that a deeper understanding of perceptual needs can optimize architectural function distribution, enhancing the urban environment's quality.

Abstract:The multidimensional iterative composition of urban landscapes and the formation mechanism of the aesthetic perception dimension are elucidated. The cognitive schema theory aims to reveal the intrinsic mechanism of urban landscape aesthetic activities. Using London as an empirical case to explore the representation and structure of urban landscape aesthetic, a cognitive schema, the cognitive map of its urban landscape, was constructed based on the qualitative analysis of the texts derived from travel notes. Eight aspects of urban landscapes, together with 21 representative concepts of cognitive schema closely related to aesthetic perception, indicate the structures and approaches people perceive in urban landscapes. This article provides experience and reference for urban landscape enhancement and related practices in China by studying the contemporary Western urban landscape.

Abstract:This paper examines the urban character of Chinatown districts around the world, as a key example of an urban ethnic enclave, focusing on four large Chinatowns in San Francisco, Yokohama, Melbourne and Sydney. It advances knowledge about the spatial elements that define urban districts, a concept pioneered by Kevin Lynch. Existing literature on Chinatowns primarily explores the historically changing relationships between their Chinese migrant communities and their host cities, or the visual and physical character of individual cases. This paper develops new insights into how the built forms of these urban districts are similar to or different from their surroundings and from each other. It employs a methodology that combines space syntax analysis of street networks, morphological analysis of built form, land-use analysis, and mapping of visual character from street level. It examines the Chinatown districts' spatial extents in terms of contrasts between their spatial attributes and their wider urban surroundings. The findings develop a new taxonomy of Chinatowns based on their urban spatial characteristics.

Abstract:With the new social background under the role of globalization and information, a new special form: space of flows produce. The article analyses the concept of the space of flows, in turn, discussed the idea of the space of flows in detail. We reveal the new idea of the space of flows that include the spatial development of the mobility, the network of spatial structure and duality of behavior pattern. Flows has always been the core driving force for social development, the space of flows is dominated by the information society, which show the flow characteristics of network, integrated physical space and virtual space characteristics of the space of flows for human action provides two different platforms. Then, the article researches the space of flows from the concept of triggering the urban planning support system, urban structure, function and so on. Research shows that the new context of urban support system should be based on the city to build a skeleton of flows mainly through the strengthening of support for the movement of high-speed transportation system, as well as non-material support to improve the flow of information infrastructure construction to achieve the rapid movement of urban space. Urban structure changes from the city center to the network. The functions of the city should be placed in the global urban system to be positioned and analyzed. The space of flows makes urban land use function change from a single function to the flexible features. The transformation of the planning requires broader flexibility.

Abstract:This study explores the relationship between spatial form and inner vitality, and discusses the impact of three morphological variables on spatial vitality and spatial cognition of residents and tourists. The purpose of this study is to investigate the internal relationship between spatial morphological characteristics, spatial vitality, and people's spatial cognition. In China, the over-commercialization of tourism has led to changes in the historical spaces of many traditional villages, and the problems of homogenization and commercialization have become increasingly obvious. To address this, this study will use a combination of space syntax and cognitive imagery to understand the historical street space. Space syntax theory quantifies the division of spatial scales and studies the relationship between spatial form and human behavior. The concept of cognitive imagery reproduces the user's spatial cognition through imagery, and explores the relationship between spatial elements and cognition. Combining these two theories can provide a better understanding of the laws of spatial form and behavioral cognition. This study investigates the historical streets in Hongcun village, a World Cultural Heritage Site located in China. The research sample consists of 51 tourists who have been traveled to Hongcun, and 49 villagers who still reside in the study area. Spatial analysis was performed using DepthmapX software. The results show that there is a positive correlation between the degree of integration, intelligibility, and optionality of traditional street space, the vitality of the space, and people's cognition. However, residents and tourists have different perceptions of the same traditional street space due to their different identities and awareness. When formulating protection and utilization plans, the needs of residents and tourists should be considered comprehensively to achieve a reasonable allocation of village spaces. The study's results provide a reference for policymakers to better understand the relationship between the spatial form and inner vitality of traditional villages.
