Abstract:Purpose: This paper aims to illustrate, integrate, and assess current research on sustainable marketing strategy/management, unveil tendencies and suggest further research directions. Specifically, the paper focuses on (1) describing the time evolution of research on the subject, (2) acknowledging the most impactful journals and leading authors; (3) clarifying predominant thematic areas and their sub-themes to highlight the main perspectives and explore the current sustainability marketing trend through bibliographic coupling analysis and compare research categories in China and other regions as well as to predict the direction of future research.Design/methodology/approach: Articles collected from the Web of Science (WOS) were identified using both automatic and manual bibliographic analysis. Then, 316 articles from the WOS were accessed from 569 academic journals published between 1900 and 2021. Next, the co-word method was applied over a dataset of 252 peer-reviewed articles published from 1900 to 2021. Thereafter, a systematic literature review was compiled from 252 papers, found to be interconnected based on the VOS viewer algorithm.Findings: The main themes explored comprise document distribution among the most highly cited publications, indicating their quality and identifying which scholars are the most influential. The study further highlights the results of bibliographic coupling analysis forming seven clusters related to the following topics: corporate environmentalism and market orientation, holistic concept of sustainability disclosure and performance, environmental sustainability concept, antecedents and outcomes of social sustainability, holistic concept of strategic CSR and sustainable practices, reframing sustainable marketing strategy from the institution, system perspective and the economic performance impacts of environmental and social sustainability. Research limitations/implications: Limitations of data from Web of Science journals from 1900 to 2021.Originality/value: This is the first study to utilize co-citation and co-word analysis for articles concerning the sustainability marketing field from a firm perspective.
