Abstract:Rosin is one of natural recycled resource which is rich in our country. Its mainly elements is tricyclic diterpenoid resin acid, rosin and disporportionated, hydrogenated rosin via esterification to overcome rosin itself existed many shortages,such as easy to suffer from oxidation,colour and buster unsteadiness,brittle,low softening point and expand rosin in many industry application scope. The research on rosin catalysis,esterification turning nature and the application of esterified products in the preparations of hot melt adhesives were reviewed in this paper based on the analyzing the studies in the field during the last decade, and has a prospect to the study.
A novel acid catalyst based on super/subcritical CO2-enriched water for the efficient esterification of rosin

Abstract:Rosin esters are widely applied as masticatory substances and beverage stabilizers, while classical acid-catalysed processes will lead to metal residue or environmental issues. Super/subcritical CO2-enriched high temperature liquid water (HTLW) as a green acid catalyst in the esterification reaction of rosin with glycerol was investigated. The pH of CO2-H2O binary system, as calculated based on gas-liquid equilibrium, charge balance and chemical equilibrium equations, ranged from 3.49 to 3.70 depending on the reaction conditions, indicating effective acid catalysis. Response surface methodology experiments showed the optimum conditions were 3.5 h, 3.9 MPa CO2 pressure, a rosin-to-glycerol molar ratio of 1.32 and 269°C, and an enhanced esterification yield of 94.74% was achieved, which was superior to that obtained using a ZnO catalyst. It was found that the esterification kinetics was a pseudo first-order reaction, and the enthalpy and entropy of activation were calculated using the Arrhenius-Polanyi equation. The presence of super/subcritical CO2-enriched HTLW catalyst can decrease the activation energy and significantly accelerate the reaction rate.

Abstract:Polymer latexes have been widely used in paints, adhesives, binders, paper coatings, textile finishes, pharmaceuticals, floor polishes, printing inks, etc. because of the reduced volatile organic compound emissions afforded by these water-based systems. Rosin has excellent properties of corrosion, moisture, insulation, emulsifying and thickening. The rosin is introduced into polymer latexes to produce polymer latex modified with rosin via blending or copolymerization methods, which not only broadens the use of deep-processing of rosin, but also widens the scope of application of polymer latexes. The research progress of polymer latexes including water dispersible polymers modified with rosin was reviewed. The tendency of polymer latexes modified with rosin is brought forward.

Abstract:Gum rosin is an important agricultural commodity which is widely used as a raw material for various industries. However, gum rosin has low stability, crystallizes easily, and tends to oxidize. This is due to carboxyl groups and conjugated double bonds in gum rosin’s structure. Therefore, to reduce these weaknesses, it is necessary to modify the rosin compound to achieve better stability via the esterification process. This paper surveys esterification agents such as glycerol, pentaerythritol, methanol, ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol (PEG), allyl group, and starch Rosin ester. The product is used in the manufacture of pressure-sensitive adhesives, drug delivery, solder flux for electronic devices, as a plasticizer, and as a coating agent in fertilizers. In general, the esterification reaction between alcohols and carboxylic acids is very slow without a catalyst. Heterogeneous catalysts have the advantage of controlling size, structure, spatial distribution, surface composition, thermal-chemical stability, and selectivity. Among the catalysts for gum rosin esterification are ZSM-5, Fe3O4, ZnO, Calcium, TiO2, Kaolin, and Al2O3, among others. Different catalysts and esterification agents can produce various physical and chemical properties of rosin ester and will result in specific rosin ester products, such as glycerol ester, pentaerythritol ester, methyl ester, glycol ester, allyl ester, and acid starch-based rosin.

Abstract:A class of tunable Lewis acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were prepared easily by self-assembly of different Lewis acids as hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) with hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), and their catalytic activity were investigated in the rosin polymerization reaction. The optimized DES [InCl3]4[ChCl] was further investigated owing to its excellent catalytic property in the reaction. The formation of hydrogen bonding in the structure of [InCl3]4[ChCl] was confirmed by FT-IR and 1H NMR characterization. The factors affecting the rosin polymerization were explored, and the optimum reaction conditions were rosin 15 g, toluene 5.4 mL, n-octane 12.6 mL, DES 5 g, 110 oC for 10 h. The softening point of the polymerized rosin could reach 149.9 oC, and the acid value was 124.5 mg KOH/g. Meanwhile, the DES catalyst could be recovered and reused for six-runs without post-processing. The characterization of the polymerized product showed that the product was mainly rosin dimer. The new catalytic system exhibits the advantages of low energy consumption, high efficiency and environmental friendliness, and provides a promising and sustainable approach for the preparation of polymerized rosin.

Abstract:Amphiphilic Ni–W–B nanocatalysts supported on hollow N-doped carbon@silica double-framework nanoshperes were prepared and characterized. The aqueous phase hydrogenation of rosin and α-pinene was used to test the catalytic activity of the Ni–W–B nanocatalyst. The developed Ni–W–B alloy catalyst exhibited a very high catalytic hydrogenation activity not only for small α-pinene molecules but also for large, stubborn rosin molecules. Notably, the experimental conditions are by far the mildest for rosin hydrogenation. The ability of both W and B in providing weaker acid centers made it easier for the substrate molecules to bind to the catalyst and enhanced the electron-rich state of Ni, thus promoting the catalytic hydrogenation. The hollow structure of the carrier and its hydrophobic inner shell were deemed beneficial for substrate enrichment. The Ni–W–B alloy was stably attached to the N-doped inner carbon skeleton, preventing the aggregation, leaching, and oxidation of the nanocatalyst. The nanocatalyst exhibited good reusability.

Abstract:Based on long-term accumulated technology and customer demand,a series of high efficiency catalysts for resid hydrotreating were developed and commercialized.The commercial results demonstrated that the new catalysts possessed higher activity and selectivity for HDS,HDM and HDCCR as well as high asphaltene and resin conversion,and high hydrogen content in hydrotreated resid.The activity and stability of new catalysts were much higher than that of reference catalysts.At the same time,due to the decrease of production cost,new catalysts were more competitive in market.

Abstract:Dehydroabietane-type bifunctional organocatalysts derived from rosane-type diterpenes of dehydroabietic acid (DHAA) and dehydroabietylamine (DA) have been utilized in a wide variety of highly enantioselective reactions. Since one well-documented review exclusively reported on the development of terpene-derived bifunctional thioureas in asymmetric organocatalysis in 2013, fragmentary progress on the dehydroabietane-type bifunctional thioureas and squaramides has been mentioned in other reviews. In this mini-review, we systematically analyze and reorganize the published literature on dehydroabietane-type bifunctional organocatalysts in the recent decade according to the type of catalysts. Our aim is for this review to provide helpful research information and serve as a foundation for further design and application of rosin-based organocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Supported molecular catalysts consist of nanomaterials immobilized on a solid support. Important factors that control catalyst properties (reactivity, product selectivity, and stability) include the structure and compositions of both nanomaterials and supports. This review focuses on recent studies of supported molecular catalysts with controlled activity and selectivity in our group. We will first introduce the development of previously unexplored supported molecular catalysts. We will demonstrate the controllable selectivity of catalysts based on acidified mesoporous silica, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), hydrogen‐activated tungsten oxides, and noble metal doped Mn x O y /Na 2 WO 4 catalyst supported on mesoporous silica. We will then discuss advanced characterization techniques under reaction conditions, which offer mechanistic explanations of activity and selectivity of supported molecular catalysts. The applications of chemical transient kinetics (CTK) analysis, ambient pressure X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), and sum‐frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG‐VS) are discussed. Next, we will describe new insights into catalysis at the nanoparticle‐support interfaces, which are catalytic environments unique to supported molecular catalysts. Examples include reactions at oxide‐metal interfaces and alcohol oxidation reactions at solid–gas and solid–liquid interfaces. Lastly, we will discuss heterogenized homogeneous catalysts and heterogenized enzyme catalysts as future directions of supported molecular catalysts.

Abstract:Pd/C catalysts were prepared by an incipient-wetness impregnation and their catalytic performance in disproportionation of rosin was investigated. The texture structure, groups on the activated carbon surfaces, and acidity were characterized by N-2 physisorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The Pd/AC3 (treated at 443 K) had the highest Pd dispersion (23.60%) with the highest specific surface area of activated carbon (1057 m(2)/g). Nevertheless, the Pd/AC0 (original carbon black) had the lowest Pd dispersion (13.07%) with a lower specific surface area of original activated carbon (994 m(2)/g). Pd/AC3 presented a considerable catalytic activity in the rosin disproportionation reaction, with 64.15% dehydroabietic acid and without abietic acid in product. However, Pd/AC0 (Pd supported on the original carbon) showed a much lower catalytic activity in the rosin disproportionation reaction, with 42.64% dehydroabietic acid and 3.59% abietic acid in product. Abstract:Deep removal of olefins in aromatic hydrocarbons was investigated using various molecular sieve catalysts,and mesoporous material catalyst was found to be the best one among them.The mesoporous material was modified to adjust its acidity, and said materials prior and post to modification was characterized by XRD and FT-IR.Test results showed that the Lewis acidity of mesoporous material post to modification increased significantly,thus its catalytic activity of removing olefins in aromatic hydrocarbons was enhanced and service life was prolonged.

Abstract:Lignin as the most abundant source of aromatic chemicals in nature has attracted a great deal of attention in both academia and industry. Solvolysis is one of the promising methods to convert lignin to a number of petroleum-based aromatic chemicals. The process involving the depolymerization of the lignin macromolecule and repolymerization of fragments is complicated influenced by heating methods, reaction conditions, presence of a catalyst and solvent systems. Recently, numerous investigations attempted unveiling the inherent mechanism of this process in order to promote the production of valuable aromatics. Oxidative solvolysis of lignin can produce a number of the functionalized monomeric or oligomeric chemicals. A number of research groups should be greatly appreciated with regard to their contributions on the following two concerns: (1) the cracking mechanism of inter-unit linkages during the oxidative solvolysis of lignin; and (2) the development of novel catalysts for oxidative solvolysis of lignin and their performance. Investigations on lignin oxidative solvolysis are extensively overviewed in this work, concerning the above issues and the way-forward for lignin refinery.

Abstract:C9 petroleum resin is a thermoplastic polymer produced by polymerization of C9 fraction obtaining from the steam cracking unit, and could be catalytic hydrogenated to remove the ethylenic C=C bond, aromatic ring with improved physical properties. The research progress in the efficiency supported nickel or/and palladium catalysts for C9 petroleum resin hydrogenation was illustrated and reviewed, further development was discussed.

The optimal processing conditions such as temperature, pressure, solvent content (based on solution weight) and catalyst content(based on rosin weight) are 150 ℃,5.0 MPa,50% and 0.14% respectively,have been gained.

Abstract:Rosin is natural and renewable resources and is very rich and cheap in china. The three-ring phenanthrene skeleton in molecules of rosin is hydrophobic as the long-chain alkyl group in higher fatty acids,and hydrophilic groups can introduced through the carboxyl groups in the resin acid of rosinso rosin. It can be used as raw material to synthesize non-ionic surfactant. It meets the need of green chemistry and sustainable development. Progress on the study of the non-ionic surfactant based on rosin was reviewed in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of non-ionic surfactant for the applications were discussed respectively.
Efficient catalytic hydrogenation of acrylic rosin over high-activity Pd/C catalyst under mild conditions

Abstract:In the present work, efficient catalytic hydrogenation of acrylic rosin (AR) were extensively investigated. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of AR and hydrogenated acrylic rosin (HAR) were carried out by GC and GC–MS, and the reaction pathway network about catalytic hydrogenation of AR was constructed. In addition, a Pd/C catalyst with well-dispersed ultrafine nano-palladium was prepared by impregnation method using Pd(NO3)2·2H2O precursor and put into use for the catalytic hydrogenation of AR. The structural properties of the catalyst were measured via XRD, TEM, ICP-OES, XPS, and BET. The characterizations showed that the ultrafine Pd nanoparticles (NPs) with an average Pd NPs size of 2.29 nm and consisting of 3.1% Pd were equably loaded on the surface of activated carbon. Benefiting from well-dispersed ultrafine Pd NPs, the catalyst exhibits outstanding activity in the hydrogenation of AR at 180 °C and 5 MPa, which shows 1.9 times superior activity than a commercial 10% Pd/C. The quality of prepared HAR is similar to the commercial HAR (Gardner color < 1, acid value of 235 mg KOH/g, softening point of 129 °C, 35% conversion rate of acrylpimaric acids).Graphical abstract
