Review on urban poverty concentration in European and American cities and its revelations to China

Abstract:Based on the perspectives of urban geography,urban planning and urban sociology,this article reviews the phenomenon of poverty concentration in European and American cities,analyses the results which include the decline of residential income and the opportunity of employment,the exacerbation of social segregation and discrimination,the worsening of public security environment,the suffered adverse effects of children and the shortage of public infrastructure.The factors which affect poverty concentration are also explored,such as market,government,special human factors and the transformation of industrial structure.The experiences of European and American cities provide valuable suggestions to the development policies of China,and to reduce poverty concentration and its triggered social problems.They also argues that the government should positively make some regulations to lower the excessive income gap,avoid the concentration of affordable housing and low-cost housing,build mixed and diverse communities,change the public housing policies from the supply-oriented guide to the need-oriented guide.
