The May Fourth As a Social Movement

Abstract:The May 4th movement in 90 years ago was not just a"patriotic movement"but also,even more importantly,a social movement in which intellectuals and other social groups were mobilized under the flag of citizen's obligation.The enlightened intellectuals who had a victory in the initial stage of the May 4th movement shifted their goal from self-liberalization to the project of social reform,to the social movement extended to whole citizenry.The climax of the movement after the May 4th 1919 was not focusing on"saving the nation from extinction"but rather on social reform with idealistic spirit.The consensus among intellectuals in the early 1920 was"to create a society out of nothing", that is,to create self-motivated,autonomous,organized society outside the state.The social movement expresses the spirit of citizenship and social responsibility,behind which is not the narrow-minded conception of national state but a broad sense of humanity and an idea of cosmopolitanism.
