Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:After the Dec.9th Movement,the students in Beijing were split into two groups: the Old Students' Federation and the New Students' Federation.A bloody conflict broke out between the two groups at the Enlarged May Fourth Movement Commemoration Meeting held in Beijing Normal University on May 4th,1937,which led to a dispute in the Beijing cultural circle.Through the mediation of various forces,quarrels ceased and there emerged the unity of student movement.This event shows that the split or the unity of the Beijing students in 1937 was closely linked to the political struggles between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang.

Abstract:Tsinghua College joined the May Fourth Movement on the next day and then rapidly became an important power of the movement. The actions of the students of Tsinghua were influenced by the Research Clique and the British-American force in China. The students of Tsinghua showed their unique team spirit and organization ability in the movement. The thought of the students greatly changed after the movement and Tsinghua entered a new period since then.

Abstract:"Ever since the May Fourth Movement" has been a settled narrative pattern for a long time;the trope of "reading La Jeunesse and participating in the May Fourth Movement," as constructed by various "memoirs," also reflects the influence of "May Fourth." If we locate specific reading experiences within a broader field of view by asking how the New Culture Movement was "read," we may get different perspectives on this problem.Through looking at individual cases,including recent graduates and students still in school,we find that individuals in different regions with different identities had different "readings" of La Jeunesse and the New Culture Movement.This demonstrates the variety of the New Culture Movement and the diversity of Chinese society.Additionally,distinguishing between "center" and "periphery" can help later generations to better understand the New Culture Movement’s mechanisms of "influence." The "center" permeated into the "periphery," and at the same time the "periphery" identified with the "center."

Abstract:Abstract The beginning of the 20th century brought great economic, political and cultural challenges to China after the collapse of the Qing dynasty. A crucial moment was the May Fourth Revolution, a cultural and anti-imperialist movement initiated by Beijing university students who challenged the poor representation of China’s national interests at the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. This treaty ceded Shandong province, which had been under German control, to Japan. This research aims to analyse the characteristics, stages and evolution of this movement in the national and international context of the time, as well as its influence on Confucian philosophy in modern China.

Abstract:As many historians who have studied the May Fourth have recognized, science was an important part of both the May Fourth, with Mr. Democracy and Mr. Science as its two banners, and its impact. Yet, besides valuable studies by Fan Hongye (樊洪业) and others on the close connections between the May Fourth and the Science Society of China and Charlotte Furth on the geologist Ding Wenjiang, little has been done on the relationship between Chinese scientists and the May Fourth, especially in the late twentieth century. In an attempt to explore this critical dimension of the May Fourth history, I have chosen to examine the lives and careers of two prominent practicing scientists and their connections with the May Fourth: the meteorologist Zhu Kezhen (竺可桢1890--1974) and the astrophysicist Fang Lizhi (方励之1936--2012). Both identified primarily as scientists even as they carried out administrative duties and political activism (in Fang's case), their evolving and differentiated views of the May Fourth and its legacy indicated possibly generational and disciplinary dynamics at work.

Abstract:The dispute over “problems and -isms” triggered the initial conflict between Marxism and experimentalism. Although Li Dazhao and Hu Shi expressed their respective philosophical, social and political ideas in their polemic there were elements in Li Dazhao's “radical solution” and Hu Shi's “incremental reform”that could communicate with one another, which also served as an ideological source for Li Dazhao to devote himself to the promotion of the democratic united front.

Abstract:Object of the study is the image of the May 4th Movement of 1919 in the official interpretation of history of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in PRC. The goal is to trace changes in the interpretation of the Movement in speeches of Chinese Communist Party's leaders on the occasion of its anniversary. To do this, author conducts qualitative and quantitative content analysis of the relevant speeches of 1979, 1989, 1999, 2009 and 2019. There are five main conceptual blocks present in every speech: attitude towards tradition, assessment of past mistakes of CCP and role of Mao Zedong, "spirit of May 4th Movement", development goals and youth policy. In the course of analysis, changes in content of these blocks are traced. Thus, ideological transformation of PRC is viewed in the context of changes in official interpretation of a significant historical event. Memory of this event in China is filled with various meanings, including themes of democracy and youth rebellion, inconvenient for the ruling Communist Party. Author comes to the conclusion that at least since late 1990s CCP has begun to rely on nationalism as a new source of legitimization of its power. In the analyzed speeches it can be seen how, with a greater emphasis on the patriotic component of the "Movement", other meanings associated with it, primarily democracy and science, have fallen by the wayside. At the same time, there has been a transition from rejection of traditional culture to its acceptance.

Abstract:The Studies of the Great Series of the Chinese New Literature is the joint work of new literature authority and modern media.It is not only a works collection,but also has features of literary history.The Great Series influences literary orientation of May Fourth Movement authors in the following three aspects: editorial staff;the evaluation of modern writers and their works;the number of works selected.Because compiling time of The Great Series was very close to the New Literature,the compilers found it very difficult to eliminate personal factors when they were compiling works and evaluating writers and works.With the time passing by,The Great Series will face more tests and challenges in terms of the literary orientation of May Fourth Movement authors.

Abstract:The May Fourth New Culture Movement was a "convergent historical movement," as well as a movement with a central purport and an intrinsic wholeness. The image of a homogeneous May Fourth formed unintentionally, and was also constructed by contemporaries and later generations. By examining the connections between the 1911 Revolution and the New Culture Movement from a more macroscopic perspective, exploring whether the latter was in fact a response to external impact or a self-awakening, observing how the debate over new versus old in the early Republican era developed to the point of a "culture" war, how the two-sided efforts for radical reforms reconciled destruction and construction, the interaction between the student movement and the New Culture Movement, and other aspects, thus examining the legacy of the New Culture Movement via perceptions in the post–May Fourth era, we can see that May Fourth has become a symbol of the New Culture Movement.

Abstract:In 1939, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leaders designated May 4 "National Youth Day," emphasizing its patriotic legacy. Subsequently, the CCP adapted May Fourth spirit to its political agenda and to historical changes. This article examines how the CCP's May Fourth public commemorations constructed a linkage between May Fourth and youth as historical and political agents in CCP discourse and discusses meanings of youth articulated in commemorative articles and editorials from 1939 to the early People's Republic. May Fourth commemoration became a site for articulation of a youth discourse that inherited the spirit of national salvation/rejuvenation and of concrete political action and evolved in response to changing sociohistorical circumstances. In 1939, youth received attention as a new force against Japan. With the creation of the socialist state, youth assumed unprecedented significance as children of New China, symbols of a new beginning, and privileged agents of socialist transformation and modernity.

Abstract:Tsinghua College devoted great attention to the teaching of western culture while looked down on the teaching of Chinese before the May Fourth Movement.What's more,it boycotted the New Literature in the teaching of Chinese.The reform of the teaching of Chinese focused on teaching method but not contents,which showed a conservative stand.After the May Fourth Movement,Tsinghua College began to lay equal stress on western culture courses and Chinese culture courses.Its attitude to the New Literature also changed from repulsion to assimilation even acceptance.The guiding ideology of the reform of the teaching of Chinese changed from reform for use to reform for culture.Being neither running after the New Literature nor sticking to old ways,Tsinghua College walked between the Chinese and Western cultures as well as the old and new,which led to a new road of fusing Chinese and Western cultures.The reform of the teaching of Chinese around the May Fourth Movement showed a unique cultural and educational idea differentiated from that of the new culture advocates.

Abstract:The year before the May Fourth Movement was politically uneventful.To many it was a year of hope,with optimism arising from the triumph of justice,as well as the prospect of“civi- lized rule”and peace.Students were encouraged to participate in extra-campus activities.The large-scale celebrations for the end of the World WarⅠforeshadowed the form taken by the May Fourth Movement.Domestic political and intellectual developments were obviously intertwined with international politics and thought.Many anticipated the beginning of a new era for man- kind.They hoped that the wind blowing eastward from the European War would serve as an ex- ternal force that would solve all China's problems at a single stroke,ushering in an era of univer- sal harmony across the world.Both the peace conference in Paris and peace negotiations between the northern and southern regimes in China indicated efforts to find solutions to dilemmas through non-violent negotiation.The failure of the two showed the difficulties of the moderate approach in both thought and action.Disappointment came as unexpectedly as hope.The nation- wide sense of disappointment only made the literati even more radical.

Abstract:Scholars today have been considering how to carry forth the "May Fourth heritage." However,our understanding of "May Fourth"—both in the broad sense and in the narrow sense—is not sufficient to make a final judgment.Indeed,even some basic historical facts have not been clarified,and the field is filled with contending voices.However,if we look at "May Fourth" through the contemporary observations and after-the-fact reflections of contemporary faculty members as published in New Education,we can see that "students"—the social products of new education in modern times—gradually rose to prominence and came to express a collective awareness;they were entrusted with the important task of saving the nation and the people,but they also became more and more disengaged from education itself and from scholarship.This also suggests how rich and multifaceted "May Fourth" was,both in and of itself and in the eyes of later generations.

Abstract:Abstract: In "The Xueheng School (), Babbitt’s New Humanism, and the May Fourth Movement ()" Li Yi discusses modern Chinese literary history. On the one hand, it is known that scholars have been discussing key figures of the May Fourth Movement by positioning the Xueheng School to the opposite side of the former. Hence in scholarship and criticism the location of the Xueheng School as a restoration group of feudalism resulted in understanding the School as hindering the development of modern culture. However, since the 1990s the Xueheng School inspired interest in the concept of restoring ancient Chinese thought. Some scholars even repeat the ideas of the Xueheng School and regard the efforts of Xueheng scholars as overall and profound cultural pursuits which would diminish some of the extreme ideas of the May Fourth Movement. Li argues that neither of the two views on the Xueheng School are accurate and discusses the Xueheng School’s achievements in view of Irving Babbitt’s idea of "New Humanism."
