Abstract:The paper presents the new activities and developments of reference services in Tsinghua University library,which include the reference platform,teamwork,blog system,responsible librarian,and real time reference as well. Some hot topics in this field,such as Library 2.0 and its application in reference,the future of real time reference,are discussed. The authors insist that libraries should be active and rational when using new technologies in reference services. At last,some questions are put forward which need more experiment and research. This paper will be useful for libraries to improve reference services.

Abstract:Abstract This study aims to elucidate the relationship between user demand and library virtual reference services, as well as to explore the development of such services across fifteen colleges and universities in China. Leveraging user research data, we established goals for virtual reference services. We introduced the VCRA-CP (Virtual Consultation Resource Allocation-Customer Profile) model for resource scheduling to better align with user needs. User clustering techniques were utilized to categorize users, and a hybrid push information service combining clustering service and collaborative filtering was adopted. This approach was further enhanced by integrating a “user-service evaluation model” to score and deliver services. The operational dynamics of the virtual reference consultation service were meticulously analyzed, particularly focusing on the real-time consulting function module. We proposed evaluating the effectiveness of virtual reference services based on three dimensions: consulting system performance, service impact, and information control. The evaluation metrics included average acceptance value, average perceived value, and average expected value from users. A critical finding concerning the “timeliness and accuracy of responses in virtual reference consultations” revealed a discrepancy, with the average perceived value minus the average acceptance value equaling −0.15, indicating a significant area for improvement in response timeliness and accuracy. User satisfaction was quantified at 65.86%, with a dissatisfaction rate of 6.93%. Although the overall satisfaction with the virtual reference consulting service was high, there remains a need to enhance the standardization of these services to better meet user expectations.

An Investigation of the Academic Information Finding and Re-finding Behavior on the Web

Abstract:Academic researchers often need and re-use relevant information found after a period of time. This preliminary study used various methods, including experiments, interviews, search log analysis, sequential analysis, and observation to investigate characteristics of academic information finding and re-finding behavior. Overall, the participants in this study entered short queries either in finding or re-finding phases. Comparatively speaking, the participants entered greater number of queries, modified more queries, browsed more web pages, and stayed longer on web pages in the finding phase. On the other hand, in the re-finding phase, they utilized personal information management tools to re-find instead of finding again using search engine, such as checking browsing history; moreover, they tend to input less number of queries and stayed shorter on web pages. In short, the participants interacted more with the retrieval system during the finding phase, while they increased the use of personal information management tools in the re-finding phase. As to the contextual clues used in re-finding phase, the participants used less clues from the target itself, instead, they used indirect clues more often, especially location-related information. Based on the results of sequential analysis, the transition states in the re-finding phase was found to be more complex than those in the finding phase. Web information finding and re-finding behavior is an important and novel area of research. The preliminary results would benefit research on Web information re-finding behavior, and provide useful suggestions for developing personal academic information management systems. Abstract:[Purpose/significance] The advent of the big data era has driven the transformation and upgrading of library reference service model.How to build a smart reference service model from the perspective of “multi-source data-driven” is crucial to the realization of smart library services.[Method/process] The article identifies the similarities and differences between traditional reference advisory services, digital reference advisory services and intelligent reference advisory services.The value of data-driven for reference advisory services is elaborated.The smart reference service model is discussed as consisting of 3 stages: smart perception of user needs, smart advisory service and intelligent push service for users.The optimization of the smart reference service process is realized.The feasibility of this service model is verified by the application example of Nanjing University Library.[Result/conclusion] Strategies and recommendations for the implementation of the smart reference service model are presented.By effectively integrating data, technology and services, this model helps to improve the level and quality of smart reference services in libraries, with a view to providing new ideas and methods for the transformation and upgrading of library reference services.

Abstract:Academic libraries are experiencing significant changes and making efforts to deliver their service in the digital environment. Libraries are transforming from being places for reading to extensions of the classroom and learning spaces. Due to the globalized digital environment and intense competition, libraries are trying to improve their service quality through various evaluations. As reference service is crucial to users, this study explores user satisfaction towards the reference service through WhatsApp, a social media instant messenger, at a major university in Hong Kong and discusses the correlation between the satisfaction rating and three variables. Suggestions and recommendations are raised for future improvements. The study also sheds light on the usage of reference services through instant messaging in other academic libraries.

Abstract:Since 1996 Tsinghua University Library has subscribed to more than 300 content databases. Through 70 platforms students and faculties gained access to 34,000 serial titles, in full text, including 22,000 English titles and 12,000 Chinese titles. In 2004, within the Tsinghua campus, there were total 1,700,000 searches to A&I databases and 2,800,000 downloads of full text articles and ebook chapters. To better understand the needs of the library patrons we conducted a survey whit focus in service satisfaction, e-resource value, usage of the information, and problems and issues in accessing databases. The responses and the results of the survey were overwhelmingly encouraging. With the positive feedbacks and constructive comments the library now can position itself to adjust the e-resource and provide better services with better information effectively.

Abstract:This paper discusses the significance of quality evaluation on virtual reference service, and introduces the current status on quality evaluation of the service. Then it introduces two important quality evaluation standards: the one is the VRD digital reference service's quality evaluation standard, the other is 'statistics, measures, and quality standards for assessing digital reference library services' , which is a project by Florida State University and Syracuse University. Abstract:In this paper,the elements of 51 Chinese and English academic information retrieval systems are investigated and analyzed,respectively from aspects of update cycle,peer review,service types,service mode,help,personalized service,stimulation,retrieval methods,browsing/navigation,search fields,search techniques,recall/precision,relevance feedback,sorting/grouping,format/display,output of result,item identification/mark,classification/subject description,hyperlinks,and meta retrieval etc.The results reveal that ① the elements of Chinese and English academic information retrieval systems are similar,but Chinese database need to do more;② improving the analysis and design of output of retrieval systems;③ expanding the application of meta retrieval;④ extending the depth and breadth of personalized service;⑤ providing value-added services.
