Abstract:Humanoid robot has been one of the most active research topics in the field of robotics. Their human-like form and configuration gives it advantages in working in human-interactive environment. The bipedal walking capability makes them possible to step over and onto obstacles, providing accessibility and mobility in cluttered space. The multi-DOF design of arms and legs enables them assist or replace humans in their normal tasks, making human life easier and safer. Abstract:This paper presents the development of the bipedal robot platform, HTY, which is designed for operation in dangerous and unknown environments, with the ability to move in complex environments. The robot is equipped with a simple joint and structure layout to ensure a wide range of joint movements and has the ability to perceive the status of its foot. The modular design and scalability requirements are also met. The HTY bipedal robot has a total of 12 degrees of freedom, a height of 119 cm, and a weight of 54 kg. The developed motion planning and control framework is tested on both the Gazebo simulation platform and the physical robot, achieving stable walking. This paper mainly introduces the design concept and basic specifications of the robot.

Abstract:Our team TsinghuaHephaestus was established in 2003 as a part of the Lab for Robot Intelligent Control, Department of Automation, Tsinghua University. With the research interests on robotics and artificial intelligence, our software for robot soccer was developed on Aibo ERS-210A, in which many basic skills were learned from other teams. In November 2004, we bought Aibo ERS-7 and started to work on the new version of our software. The whole system was restructured and most of the modules were rewritten. We participated in RoboCup 2005 in Osaka, Japan. As a new team, we have got many things during our first entrance to the international arena, including state-of-the-art of various technical fields, management skills for a successful team and the understanding of the game itself. The rest of this report describes the approaches we used in the 2005 competition in detail, which is organized as follows. Section 2 illustrates the structure of the system. Section 3, 4 and 5 focuses on the implementation of vision, localization and motion modules. Section 6 introduces the routine and basic behaviors used to make decisions. The last section gives a summary of our experiences in Osaka and discusses the future development of our team.

Abstract:In order to launch a soccer game between human and robots, one of the crucial problems for robots is to effectively identify human and their actions. In this paper, based on human skeleton tracking information from Kinect, GR (Gesture Recognition), FVGR (Front View Gait Recognition) and NNVGR (Non-Normative View Gait Recognition) are carried out to develop the HRI (Human Robot Interaction) systems for a middle size league soccer robot. This method is used to identify the human body language and obtain information of body movements, so that the HRI system can generate different command to control the movements of the middle size league soccer robot. The performances of the proposed HRI systems are verified by different experiments. The experimental results show that this method can quickly and safely identify human and their movements. This research can provide a practical solution for Mid-Sized League competition between human and robots in the future.

Abstract:This paper presents HUBOT - a modeling and simulation platform specialized for multi-link robots. We use PhysX as the dynamics solver so that we can manipulate various physics parameters of the robot directly. Visualization is also supported based on OpenGL rendering environment. HUBOT solves kinematics and dynamics among the robot and the environment, sensor data simulation is also implemented to help evaluate robot status and test control algorithms. A biped walking simulation of a humanoid robot is presented as a demonstration of our simulation platform.

Abstract:To solve technical problems in miniaturization and integration of humanoid robot,and apply humanoid robot in unstructured human life environment,a new kid-size humanoid robot THBIP-Ⅱ is developed,and its system configuration is introduced,including mechanical structure,control system and sensing system.THBIP-Ⅱ has a height of 700 mm,a weight of 18 kg and 24 degrees of freedom.To fulfill its miniaturization,modularized joints and transmission structures with synchronous belt and harmonic reducer are adopted,and a typical distributed control is adopted in its control system.Meanwhile,a 3D simulation platform is established,and a flat locomotion of 15 cm/step,0.075 m/s and a stable penalty kick are achieved successfully based on 3D parametric gait planning of torque optimization.

Abstract:This is the first publication presenting the minihumanoid robot THBIP-2, the second-generation biped of Tsinghua University. It is 70 cm in height and 18 kg in weight with 24 degrees of freedom. This paper mainly addresses its mechatronics system realization, including the conceptual design, actuation system, sensing system, and control system. In addition, a walking stability controller based on zero moment point criterion and the walking simulation are presented. Finally, experiments validate and confirm the efficiency of the design.

Abstract:The infant-size humanoid robot THBIP-II, Tsinghua University biped robot II, is the second generation prototype of Tsinghua biped robots. THBIP-II is 75 cm tall, weighs 18 Kg, and has 24 degrees of freedom (DOF). This paper addresses the design, mechanical modeling, gait planning method, and global footstep planning method of the robot. First the humanoid mechatronics system and its kinematics and dynamics modeling are prescribed. Second, the gait planning algorithm developed for human-like walking is presented. Third, a footstep planning method for global navigation is addressed. Finally, the walking experiments are given to verify the validity of the above aspects.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the newly formed New Zealand based RoboCup Humanoid Kid-Size team, Electric Sheep. We describe our developed humanoid robot platform, particularly our unique take on the chassis, electronics and use of several motor types to create a low-cost entry platform. To support this hardware, we discuss our software framework, vision processing, walking and game-play strategy methodology. Lastly we give an overview of future research interests within the team and intentions of future contributions for the league and the goal of RoboCup.

Abstract:There has been an increasing interest in mobile manipulators that are capable of performing physical work in living spaces worldwide, corresponding to an aging population with declining birth rates with the expectation of improving quality of life (QoL). We assume that overall research and development will accelerate by using a common robot platform among a lot of researchers since that enables them to share their research results. Therefore we have developed a compact and safe research platform, Human Support Robot (HSR), which can be operated in an actual home environment and we have provided it to various research institutes to establish the developers community. Currently, the number of HSR users is expanding to 44 sites in 12 countries worldwide (as of November 30th, 2018). To activate the community, we assume that the robot competition will be effective. As a result of international public offering, HSR has been adopted as a standard platform for international robot competitions such as RoboCup@Home and World Robot Summit (WRS). HSR is provided to participants of those competitions. In this paper, we describe HSR's development background since 2006, and technical detail of hardware design and software architecture. Specifically, we describe its omnidirectional mobile base using the dual-wheel caster-drive mechanism, which is the basis of HSR's operational movement and a novel whole body motion control system. Finally, we describe the verification of autonomous task capability and the results of utilization in RoboCup@Home in order to demonstrate the effect of introducing the platform.

Abstract:Abstract This study presents the overall architecture of HeterBot, a heterogeneous mobile manipulation robot developed in our lab, which is designed for versatile operation in hazardous environments. The most significant feature of HeterBot is the heterogeneous design created by adopting the idea of ‘big arm + small arm’ and ‘big car + mini car’. This combination has the advantage of functional complementation, which achieves performance promotion in both locomotion and manipulation capabilities, making HeterBot distinguished from other mobile manipulation robots. Besides, multiple novel technologies are integrated into HeterBot to expand its versatility and ease of use, including Virtual Robot Experimentation Platform‐based teleoperation, reconfigurable end effectors, laser‐aided grasping, and manipulation with customised tools. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of HeterBot in various locomotion and manipulation tasks. HeterBot displays huge potential in future applications, such as searching and rescue.

Abstract:This paper presents the gait planning method and control strategy for THBIP-1 (Tsinghua Biped Humanoid Robot) to realize stable walking. This robot includes a head, a trunk, two arms, two legs, and two feet, totally 32 DOF (degree of freedom). This project is involved for five years and aimed to realize stable walking in various environments for a self-contained humanoid robot. Firstly, the design issues including mechanical structure and control architecture of the robot are prescribed. Secondly, gait generation method based on optimization of the main support leg is presented, and control strategy composed of local joint controller and sensory feedback controller is also illustrated. The walking experiments show that the robot has the abilities of stable walking on the ground, turning in any direction, and climbing up/down stairs.
Demonstrating HumanTHOR: A Simulation Platform and Benchmark for Human-Robot Collaboration in a Shared Workspace

Abstract:Human-robot collaboration (HRC) in a shared workspace has become a common pattern in real-world robot applications and has garnered significant research interest. However, most existing studies for human-in-the-loop (HITL) collaboration with robots in a shared workspace evaluate in either simplified game environments or physical platforms, falling short in limited realistic significance or limited scalability. To support future studies, we build an embodied framework named HumanTHOR, which enables humans to act in the simulation environment through VR devices to support HITL collaborations in a shared workspace. To validate our system, we build a benchmark of everyday tasks and conduct a preliminary user study with two baseline algorithms. The results show that the robot can effectively assist humans in collaboration, demonstrating the significance of HRC. The comparison among different levels of baselines affirms that our system can adequately evaluate robot capabilities and serve as a benchmark for different robot algorithms. The experimental results also indicate that there is still much room in the area and our system can provide a preliminary foundation for future HRC research in a shared workspace.
