Abstract:Although recent academic literature and empirical research show that most firms have implemented cross-functional, or even cross-cultural innovative teams for the majority of the technological innovation projects undertaken, they are still finding it hard to ensure that these teams are successful in completing the innovation task. Trust and commitment are clearly important ingredients in these collaborations, but little is known about the challenges this new organization and social environment creates for the development of trust and commitment. Different disciplinary perspectives, different cultures, and the lack of understanding when working together raise significant barriers to developing trust and commitment. We, therefore, explore the dilemma of trust and commitment in the construction of an innovative team that most companies are always confronted with, especially Chinese private enterprises.
The influence of threat perception and psychological safety on employee creativity after mergers and acquisitions:an empirical study of high-tech companies

Abstract:This study examined employees' subjective experiences of creativity after mergers.The empirical results showed the following: First,if employees considered the merger as an opportunity(threat),then they perceived that they exhibited greater(less) creativity after the merger;second,psychological safety has a positive impact on employees' creativity;and third,psychological safety moderated the relationship between threat perception and self-perceived creativity in such a way that,when compared with employees who saw the merger as an opportunity,employees who saw the merger as a threat experienced greater creativity when psychological safety was high than when psychological safety was low.

Abstract:The Leader Member Exchange (LMX) theory is distinguished from other leadership theories in its focus on the dyadic relationship between a leader and a member. Research has shown that proper LMX relationship building can significantly increase leadership effectiveness and organization performance. LMX has been shown to be one of the most scientifically valid and practically applicable theories in management research. Leaders using this theory can maximize superior subordinate relationships. LMX theory holds great potential as a practical tool for improving workplace outcomes.

Abstract:This study examines the impact of the incompatibility between Chinese firms’ learning ability and knowledge-seeking opportunities on their innovation performance following cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Using a sample of 239 firms from 2014 to 2018, a quasi-Poisson model is employed to analyze the direct and indirect relationships among study variables. The findings indicate that firms that aggressively pursue cross-border mergers and acquisitions experience a decline in innovation performance. In contrast, innovation performance is strengthened when the host countries’ legal frameworks are strict. The study suggests that firms seeking to enter the global market must strike a balance between their learning abilities and knowledge-seeking opportunities. The study also infers that managers should consider not only firm-level factors but also industry-level and country-level factors that could affect the relationship between cross-border mergers and acquisitions and innovation outcomes.

Abstract:Poor Team performance and frequent turnover become problems troubling managers in high -tech enterprises. Based on the leader -member exchange theory,the social comparison theory and equity theory;through data from 75 team leaders and their 464 subordinates,this article finds out the mechanism of how leader -member exchange (LMX)differen-tiation influences team members’altruistic behavior and turnover intention.Empirical results indicate that LMX differentia-tion and procedure justice differentiation are significantly correlated;procedure justice differentiation is negatively related to altruistic behavior and positively related to turnover intention;procedure justice differentiation mediates the relationship be-tween LMX differentiation and altruistic behavior and turnover intention.Tracking study is done for typical teams,in order to explore the possible influencing factors,which provides the basis for future research.

Through the integration of the cognitive-affective processing system and conservation of resources (COR) theory, the present study takes integrative complexity as a moderator, and explores the mechanism of LMX ambivalence on employees' bootleg innovation. Participants and Methods: A total of 387 employees and 110 supervising managers participated in the two-wave dyadic survey. To test our hypotheses, we performed the hierarchical regression and conducted bootstrapping analyses to test our hypotheses. Results: Findings indicated that LMX ambivalence not only improves employees' cognitive flexibility and promotes bootleg innovation, but also aggravates employees' job anxiety and hinders bootleg innovation. In addition, integrative complexity significantly moderates the above two mediating paths. Specifically, when integrative complexity was higher, the negative mediating effect of job anxiety was attenuated, and the positive mediating effect of cognitive flexibility was enhanced. Conclusion: Contrasting with previous research, this research analyzed the triggering mechanism of bootleg innovation combined with the dynamic interaction of environmental stimulus, emotion and cognition. The findings provide novel insight into how to achieve bootleg innovation. Keywords: LMX ambivalence, bootleg innovation, cognitive flexibility, job anxiety, integrative complexity Employees often encounter the tension that they are expected to be innovative while there are a set of rules to hinder their innovative behaviors in the organization. Constrained by institutional deficiency, rigid hierarchy structure, and limited organizational resources, 1 most of employees' innovative ideas are ignored by the organization. Some employees, however, continue to carry out their innovative ideas secretly even though rejected by the organization because they solidly believe those innovative ideas can be valuable. Those secret innovative behaviors, defined as bootleg innovation, are not uncommon in practice. If successful, it can bring radical innovation outcomes. Evidence has indicated that 10% of individuals have experienced bootleg innovation in R&D teams. 2 The emergence of Sogou browser, 3M packaging tape, and LED technology highlight the significance of bootleg innovation. With the diversity, boundaryless and openness of firm innovation, bootleg innovation will be an important innovative form for firms. Thus, it is of great significance to explore the antecedent of bootleg innovation, and further help firms break through the dilemma of innovation. Recently, a growing body of studies has examined the antecedents of bootleg innovation from the perspectives of proactive personality, 3 actual-wanted task identity, 4 risk propensity, 5 leaderships, 6 organizational support 7 and organizational climate. 8 However, these studies neglected employees' situation-awareness before actions and its resultant emotional state and mental activities. 9 Employee innovative behaviors are closely associated with emotions, and therefore we may gain more new insights by studying innovative behaviors from the emotional perspective. Previous research has suggested that LMX was shaped by a set of pleasant or disturbing events in the interactive process between leaders and their subordinates, and the quality of the LMX, to some extent, reflected the opportunities and supports employees acquired from their leaders. Thus, LMX can be considered as an important emotional event in the workforce, 10 and it can elicit emotional responses from subordinates, and thereafter influence their attitudes and behaviors. A Multilevel Study on the Asymmetric Impacts of RLMX in Blended Workforce Context

Abstract:Based on social comparison theory, we propose a cross-level contingent process model to in-vestigate how the relative standing of leader-member exchange (RLMX) at both the interpersonal level (interpersonal RLMX) and the intergroup level (intergroup RLMX) influence employee in-novative behavior in blended teams. Using multi-source data of 347 employees from 35 bank branches, we found that interpersonal and intergroup RLMX have asymmetrical effects on innova-tive behavior of employees. The positive influence of interpersonal RLMX on individual innovative behavior is stronger for internal workers than for temporary workers, whereas the posi-tive influence of intergroup RLMX on individual innovative behavior is stronger for temporary workers, especially in teams where the relative size of temporary workers is large.

Abstract:Data from R&D employees across companies were used to test a innovation model of HMX(Horizontal Member Exchange), leaderpsilas innovation expectation, intrinsic motivation and employee innovative behavior in China background. Results suggest that HMX, leaderpsilas innovation expectation and intrinsic motivation positively contribute to employee innovation behavior; intrinsic motivations mediates the relationship between HMX, leaderpsilas innovation expectation and employee innovation behavior. Implications for innovation management are discussed. The research result would help deepen our understanding of the status quo of organizational innovation in China context.

Abstract:How to make use of leaders' psychological capital to improve the innovation behavior of employees has become an important issue for the talent management of enterprises today, and it is also the goal that enterprises must pursue if they want to stand out in fierce competition. Therefore, a total of 154 enterprises in a high-tech area were selected for questionnaire survey in this study. The correlation between leader-member exchange (LMX) relationship (emotion, loyalty, contribution, and professional respect), leaders' psychological capital (confidence, hope, optimism, and tenacity), and employees' innovation behaviors were analyzed based on multivariate regression. Hierarchical regression method was used to examine the mediating effect of the LMX. It was found that confidence, toughness, and contribution were significantly positively correlated with employee innovation behavior (<i>p</i> < 0.001). The positive correlation between hope, optimism, emotion, and loyalty with employees' innovation behavior was significant (<i>p</i> < 0.05). Besides, emotion, loyalty, and contribution had mediating effects on the leaders' psychological capital and the innovation behavior of employees. In conclusion, leaders' psychological capital can have a significant positive effect on the innovation behavior of employees directly, and it can also have an indirect positive effect on the innovation behavior of employees by maintaining high quality LMX.

Abstract:Based on the conservation of resource theory, this manuscript explores the impact mechanism of the challenge and hindrance stressors on innovation performance, introduces emotional atmosphere as a mediation variable, and on this basis, it examines the moderating role of organizational climate on emotional atmosphere and innovation performance. A two-wave survey of 263 subordinates and 29 supervisors who come from multisource field offered support for our model. Results showed that challenge stressors have a positive effect on innovation performance, positive emotional atmosphere mediates the relationship between challenge stressors and innovation performance; hindrance stressors have a negative effect on innovation performance, and negative emotional atmosphere mediates the relationship between hindrance stressors and innovation performance. Organizational climate strengthens the positive relationship between positive emotional atmosphere and innovation performance and weakens the negative relationship between negative emotional atmosphere and innovation performance. This study enriches the existing literature by identifying the impact of stressors on employee innovation performance and has certain practical significance for optimizing the management of enterprises and improving employee innovation performance.

Abstract:This study constructs an empirical framework from the perspective of dynamic capability theory, and uses a combined dataset of Chinese listed companies from 2008 to 2020 to test the causal impact of cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) on firm innovation performance by using propensity score matching, time-varying difference-in-differences model and instrumental variable method. The findings are as follows: (1) Cross-border M&A has a significant promoting effect on the innovation performance of acquiring firms. (2) Heterogeneity analysis shows that traditionally less innovative state-owned, non-manufacturing, and non-high-tech enterprises experience notable enhancements in their performance through cross-border M&As. The post-M&A innovation performance of enterprises in central China is strong, followed by enterprises in eastern China, while enterprises in western China show limited improvement. (3) Among the internal factors of firm dynamic capability, knowledge breadth and managerial capability positively moderate the impact of cross-border M&As on innovation performance, while knowledge depth and financing constraints play a negative moderating role. (4) Among the external factors of firm dynamic capability, local knowledge externalities and regional trade resilience play a positive moderating role. This study highlights the importance of firm dynamic capabilities in the cross-border M&As process and provides new insights into innovation strategies in emerging economies.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating effect of employee psychological empowerment in the leader-member exchange (LMX)-employee voice relationship, and whether role clarity moderated the effect. Design/methodology/approach - A paired questionnaire survey was used to collect data by 295 employees and their supervisors from nine firms in the People's Republic of China. Findings - The hypothesized moderated mediation model used in this study was supported. Psychological empowerment mediated the positive relationship between LMX and employee voice, and stronger role clarity tends to strengthen this indirect relationship. Originality/value - Few studies have explored the mediating mechanism in the relationship between LMX and employee voice. Based on role theory, this study broadens the research on the LMX-employee voice relationship by introducing employee psychological empowerment as the mediator. This study further explores role clarity as the boundary condition for this indirect relationship.

Abstract:Based on the antecedent variable (playfulness personality) and the outcome variable (creative deviance) on the individual level, we introduce mediating variables (positive impression management motivation and harmonious innovation passion), integrate moderating variables (employee growth need strength and professional mission sense) to construct the conceptual model and theoretical framework of the influence mechanism of playfulness personality on creative deviance of employees. Based on the questionnaire survey data of employees in high-tech enterprises, this study adopts the nonparametric percentile Bootstrap method based on deviation correction to empirically discuss the influence mechanism of employee playfulness personality on employee creative deviance. The empirical analysis results show that employee playfulness personality has a significant positive influence on employee creative deviance. Positive impression management motivation and harmonious innovation passion partially mediate the relationships between employee playfulness personality and creative deviance. Employee growth need strength negatively moderates the relationships between positive impression management motivation and employee creative deviance. The stronger the employee growth need strength, the weaker the mediating effect of employees' playfulness personality on employee creative deviance through positive impression management motivation, and there is a moderated mediating effect.

Abstract:Although many studies focus on the influence of leader-member exchange (LMX) on employee creativi-ty, but the study on the both functional mechanism is still in the exploratory stage. Using 204 questionnaire dy-ad-investigations of team leaders and their subordinates, this research attempted to probe the impact of the LMX on creativity. SEM and regression analyses showed that LMX was positively related to employee creativity, and the relationship was completely mediated by employee intrinsic motivation (IM), while the job variety played a moderating role between LMX and IM.

Abstract:PurposeThis study aims to examine how and when leader bottom-line mentality (BLM) affects employee innovation (EI) in the context of Chinese organisations in which psychological contract breach (PCB) is a mediator and moral identity (MI) is a moderator.Design/methodology/approachThe authors distributed the questionnaires to technology and culture firms in 2 waves and obtained a sample of 308 employees in 56 teams. The authors used the hierarchical linear model (HLM) and bootstrap method for the hypothesis testing.FindingsThe authors conclude that leader BLM negatively influences EI. Specifically, leader BLM leads mainly to low EI by increasing PCB amongst employees. Moreover, MI plays a moderating role in the above mechanism, i.e. the higher the MI degree of employees, the stronger the mediating role of PCB and the stronger the negative impact of leader BLM.Practical implicationsThis study argues that BLM is necessary for firm development, but paying too much attention to BLM may achieve the opposite effect. Reducing BLM or buffering the negative impact of BLM through various measures (e.g. human resource management) is appropriate for managers.Originality/valueThe authors discover a new mechanism and boundary condition, i.e. leader BLM has a negative impact on EI through PCB and MI strengthens the effect of leader BLM.

Abstract:This article studies whether and how mergers and acquisitions (M&A) intensity makes an impact on a firm's postacquisition innovation. By differentiating the types of innovation, we show that M&A has differential effects on postacquisition radical innovation and incremental innovation. Using a publicly listed firm sample in China from 2011 to 2015, our empirical results provide support that M&A intensity has an inverted U-shaped effect on radical innovation, and has a positive and significant impact on incremental innovation. Furthermore, we introduce Chief Executive Officer (CEO) career background as a contingency factor, showing that the inverted U-shaped relationship between M&A intensity and radical innovation is more pronounced in firms with technical CEOs than in those with nontechnical CEOs, and the positive relationship between M&A intensity and incremental innovation is more pronounced in firms with nontechnical CEOs than in those with technical CEOs. Our findings add to the understanding of organizational consequences of M&A and the role of strategical leadership in the relationship between M&A intensity and firm innovation.

Abstract:Integrating theories of proactive motivation, team innovation climate, and motivation in teams, we developed and tested a multilevel model of motivators of innovative performance in teams. Analyses of multisource data from 428 members of 95 research and development (R&D) teams across 33 Chinese firms indicated that team-level support for innovation climate captured motivational mechanisms that mediated between transformational leadership and team innovative performance, whereas members' motivational states (role-breadth self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation) mediated between proactive personality and individual innovative performance. Furthermore, individual motivational states and team support for innovation climate uniquely promoted individual innovative performance, and, in turn, individual innovative performance linked team support for innovation climate to team innovative performance.

Abstract:This paper explores the relationship of social exchange and economic exchange to affective commitment and turnover intentions of employees based on the social exchange theory.It uses hierarchical regression to test the hypotheses.A total survey of 1994 employee samples of from companies on their work attitudes,behaviors,and demographic characteristics in Guangdong,Shandong,and Jiangsu provinces.This empirical study shows that social exchange is positively related with affective commitment and negatively related with turnover intention.In contrast,economic exchange is negatively related with affective commitment and positively related with turnover intention.Leader-member exchange(LMX) moderates these relationships.
