The Political Understanding of Christianity——A Clue of Early Modern Political Philosophers’ Readings of Christianity

Abstract:In modern society, religion is separated from politics, and becomes a kind of private faith. It seems a common sense of modern politics. But the further studies shows that modern political philosophers’ discussion on the relationship between religion and politics are very complicated. Someone criticizes Christianity from the point of atheistic view, someone depoliticalizes Christianity, just like a liberalist, and someone takes advantage of the utopia resource of Christianity from the left-wing side. This paper analyzes the political understanding of Christianity in early modern political philosophers’ thoughts, such as Machiavelli、Hobbes、Locke and Rousseau; Machiavelli points out the tension between politics and Christianity, and regards Roman Religion as a good remedial measure, Hobbes reinterprets Christianity from the view of the Old Testament, Locke reinterprets the New testament from the view of natural law, finally it sums up a clue of the politicizing of Christianity, and ends with Rousseau’s concept of Civil Religion, this clue shows the political function of Christianity in modern western society, and the basis of its service for politics.
