Abstract:γ-Irradiation was used to prepare homogenous nanocrystalline composites of CdS/polyacrylonitrile with 19.4 wt% cadmium sulfide at room temperature. Powder X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the products. The morphology of the product was determined by transmission electron microscopy. The photoluminescence property of as-prepared CdS/polyacrylonitrile nanocomposites was also studied.

Abstract:Spherical CdS/polyacrylamide (CdS–PAM) nanocomposites were successfully synthesized in single step by γ-irradiation in a W/O microemulsion under ambient pressure at room temperature. The final product was characterized by various means such as XRD, IR, UV–vis, PL, ED and TEM. The TEM image clearly showed the homogeneous dispersion of CdS–PAM nanocomposites with the dimension of 50 nm.

Abstract:Nano-composite films of zinc sulfide and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were grown by dipping (and withdrawing) a quartz plate in ZnS/PVA gel prepared by micro-emulsion method, followed by vacuum drying. The structures and optical properties of the films were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy (PL). The results show that the molar ratio of C12H25SH and Zn2+ significantly affects many factors, including the shape, size and dispersion of the ZnS nano-particles as well as the PL band intensity and its peak position. For instance, as the ratio changes from 4:1 to 8:1, the absorption intensity peak increases with an observable blue shift.

Abstract:The nanocrystalline semiconductors PbS and CuS were prepared by gamma-irradiation at room temperature in an ethanol system for the first time. Carbon disulfide was used as the sulfur source; lead acetate and copper chloride were used as metal ion sources. X-ray Powder Diffraction was used to characterize the products and Transmission Electron Microscopy to determine their morphology. The purity and compositions of the products were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectra. The photoluminescence property of as-prepared PbS was studied. A blue shift was observed in the PL spectra, indicating the quantum size effect on nanocrystalline PbS. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Abstract:The nanocomposites of stable nanosilver particles embedded in polyacrylonitrile matrix were synthesized by γ-irradiation, in which the monomer acrylonitrile was polymerized and the silver ions were reduced simultaneously by γ-irradiation to form composites in situ. The strong interactions between silver ions with –CN groups of polyacrylonitrile are found, which were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction, IR spectrum and absorption spectra.

Abstract:Transparent ZnS/polymer bulk nanocomposites with high particle contents are prepared via gamma-ray irradiation initiated polymerization. This strategy involves the design and tailoring of the surface of the nanoparticles and choice of the monomer as well as the selection of the polymerization route. The figure shows a TEM image of a bulk nanocomposite containing mercaptoethanol-capped ZnS with a particle content of 20 wt%.

Abstract:Assemblies of short CdS nanofibers/poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) were prepared via a one-pot procedure in anhydrous ethanol for the first time by gamma-irradiation under ambient conditions. The as-prepared copolymer matrix can successfully control the morphology of nanocrystalline CdS and prevent aggregation. Carbon disulfide was the sulfur source while cadmium chloride was the metal ion source. FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the copolymer, and transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction used to confirm that well crystallized CdS nanofibers were dispersed homogeneously in the copolymer matrix. UV-VIS spectroscopy was also used to examine the quantum-confinement of the CdS nanofibers.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI)/silver composite was one-step synthesized under γ-ray irradiation. The structure of the composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-Visible, and X-ray diffraction, which indicated that PANI and face-centered-cubic silver were synthesized under γ-ray irradiation. The reaction mechanism were discussed, which revealed that the PANI was formed by the reaction of aniline cation radicals formed by the reaction of aniline cation and ·OH, and Ag was formed by the reaction of Ag+ and e−aq. The morphology of the composite consisted of PANI nanofibers and Ag nanoparticles, and the mechanism of the morphology formation was discussed, which revealed that the rapid mixing like polymerization process might play an important role. It was revealed that the transport behavior of the composite well fitted with the variable-range-hopping model in 80–300 K and deviated from the model below 80 K.

Abstract:Zinc sulfide poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) [ZnS/P(AM-co-AA)] nanocomposites with a dendritical structure were successfully prepared in one step by γ-irradiation technique in an aqueous system at room temperature and under ambient pressure. The results from X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis and IR spectrum of the final product showed the formation of ZnS nanoparticles and the polymerization of monomers, respectively. The photoluminescence (PL) peak of the as-prepared product centered at 450nm, which showed an obvious red shift compared with the ZnS bulk material. The presence of copolymer was considered to be the main reason that influenced the shape and photoluminescence property of the composite.

Abstract:Lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystallites in the modified hyperbranched polyester matrix were prepared in situ by 60Co gamma-ray irradiation with sodium thiosulfate at room temperature, and characterized with Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence (PL). The average diameter of PbS nanocrystallites was estimated to be 7.8nm on the basis of analysis of the TEM image and dispersed homogeneously within the modified hyperbranched polyester matrix. The possible formation mechanism of the PbS nanocrystallites under irradiation was discussed.
