Abstract:Brain metastases are the most common intracranial tumors in adult. Available evidence suggests that survival is longer and quality of life is improved when brain metastases are treated aggressively. To select the appropriate therapy, the physician must consider various prognostic factors. In this article, we reviewed current approaches and progress of whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) in the management of newly diagnosed brain metastases. The combination of WBRT with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or surgery has shown superior results in terms of survival time, neurocognitive function, and quality of life. Further advances in multidisciplinary approaches and optimal dosing/fractionation schedule will result in improved patient outcomes.
