Abstract:It is shown that a wide class of non-Abelian gauge theories have, up to calculable logarithmic corrections, free-field-theory asymptotic behavior. It is suggested that Bjorken scaling may be obtained from strong-interaction dynamics based on non-Abelian gauge symmetry.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of $SU(N)$ chiral gauge theories with massless fermions belonging to various combinations of the symmetric, antisymmetric or fundamental representations. We limit ourselves to the gauge-anomaly-free and asymptotically free systems. 't Hooft anomaly-matching conditions severely limit the possible RG flows. In vectorlike theories such as the quantum chromodynamics, gauge-invariant ``quark-antiquark" condensates form and characterize the IR dynamics, and the anomaly matching involves the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. In some other special cases, such as the Bars-Yankielowicz (BY) or Georgi-Glashow (GG) models, a hypothetical solution was proposed in the literature, with no global symmetry breaking and with some simple set of composite massless fermions saturating all the anomalies. For the BY and GG systems, actually, a more plausible candidate for their IR physics is the dynamical Higgs phase, with a few simple bi-fermion color-flavor locked condensates, breaking the color and flavor symmetries, partially or totally. Remarkably, the 't Hooft anomaly-matching (and generalized anomaly-matching) conditions are automatically satisfied in this phase. Another interesting possibility, occurring in some chiral gauge theories, is dynamical Abelianization, familiar from ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. We explore here even more general types of possible IR phases than the ones mentioned above, for wider classes of models. With the help of large-N arguments we look for IR free theories, whereas the MAC (maximal attractive channel) criterion might suggest some simple bi-fermion condensates characterizing the IR dynamics of the systems. In many cases the low-energy effective theories are found to be described by quiver-like gauge theories, some of the (nonAbelian) gauge groups are infrared-free while some others might be asymptotically free.

Abstract:This paper investigates the coupling of massive fermions to gravity within the context of a non-Abelian gauge theory, utilizing the effective field theory framework for quantum gravity. Specifically, we calculate the two-loop beta function of the gauge coupling constant in a non-Abelian gauge theory, employing the one-graviton exchange approximation. Our findings reveal that gravitational corrections may lead to a non-trivial UV fixed point in the beta function of the gauge coupling constant, contingent upon the specific gauge group and the quantity of fermions involved.

Asymptotically free scaling solutions in nonabelian Higgs models

Abstract:We construct asymptotically free renormalization group trajectories for the generic nonabelian Higgs model in four-dimensional spacetime. These ultraviolet-complete trajectories become visible by generalizing the renormalization/boundary conditions in the definition of the correlation functions of the theory. Though they are accessible in a controlled weak-coupling analysis, these trajectories originate from threshold phenomena which are missed in a conventional perturbative analysis relying on the deep Euclidean region. We identify a candidate three-parameter family of renormalization group trajectories interconnecting the asymptotically free ultraviolet regime with a Higgs phase in the low-energy limit. We provide estimates of their low-energy properties in the light of a possible application to the standard model Higgs sector. Finally, we find a two-parameter subclass of asymptotically free Coleman-Weinberg-type trajectories that do not suffer from a naturalness problem.

Turbulence in nonabelian gauge theory

Abstract:Kolmogorov wave turbulence plays an important role for the thermalization process following plasma instabilities in nonabelian gauge theories. We show that classical-statistical simulations in SU(2) gauge theory indicate a Kolmogorov scaling exponent known from scalar models. In the range of validity of resummed perturbation theory this result is shown to agree with analytical estimates. We study the effect of classical-statistical versus quantum corrections and demonstrate that the latter lead to the absence of turbulence in the far ultraviolet.

Abstract:If the metric is chosen to depend exponentially on the conformal factor, and if one works in a gauge where the conformal factor has the wrong sign propagator, perturbative quantum gravity corrections can be partially resummed into a series of terms each of which is ultraviolet finite. These new terms however are not perturbative in some small parameter, and are not individually BRST invariant, or background diffeomorphism invariant. With appropriate parametrisation, the finiteness property holds true also for a full phenomenologically relevant theory of quantum gravity coupled to (beyond the standard model) matter fields, provided massive tadpole corrections are set to zero by a trivial renormalisation.

Supergravity amplitudes, the double copy and ultraviolet behavior

Abstract:In this chapter, we present a scattering-amplitudes perspective on supergravity, and describe its application to the study of ultraviolet properties of supergravity theories at high loop orders. The basic on-shell tools that make such calculations feasible are reviewed, including generalized unitarity, color-kinematics duality, and the double-copy construction. We also outline the web of theories connected by the double copy. The results of various calculations of potential ultraviolet divergences are summarized. These include puzzling enhanced ultraviolet cancellations, for which no symmetry-based understanding currently exists, showing that there is much more to learn about the ultraviolet properties of supergravity theories. We finally comment on future calculations that should help resolve the puzzles.

Anomalies and Dynamics in Strongly-Coupled Gauge Theories, New Criteria for Different Phases, and a Lesson from Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

Abstract:We review recent developments in our understanding of the dynamics of strongly-coupled chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories in four dimensions, problems which are potentially important in our quest to go beyond the standard $SU(3)_{QCD} \times (SU(2) \times U(1))_{GWS}$ model of the fundamental interactions. The generalized symmetries and associated new 't Hooft anomaly-matching constraints allow us to exclude, in a wide class of chiral gauge theories, confining vacuum with full flavor symmetries supported by a set of color-singlet massless composite fermions. The color-flavor-locked dynamical Higgs phase, dynamical Abelianization or more general symmetry breaking phase, appear as plausible IR dynamics, depending on the massless matter fermions present. We revisit and discuss critically several well-known confinement criteria in the literature, for both chiral and vectorlike gauge theories, and propose tentative, new criteria for discriminating different phases. Finally, we review an idea which might sound rather surprising at first, but is indeed realized in some softly-broken supersymmetric theories, that confinement in QCD is a small deformation (in the IR end of the renormalization-group flow) of a strongly-coupled, nonlocal, nonAbelian conformal fixed point.

Renormalisable Non-local Quark-Gluon Interaction: Mass Gap, Chiral Symmetry Breaking & Scale Invariance

Abstract:We derive a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model from a non-local gauge theory and show that it has confining properties at low energies. In particular, we present an extended approach to non-local QCD and a complete revision of the technique of Bender, Milton and Savage applied to non-local theories, providing a set of Dyson--Schwinger equations in differential form. In the local case, we obtain closed form solutions in the simplest case of the scalar field and extend it to the Yang--Mills field. In general, for non-local theories, we use a perturbative technique and a Fourier series and show how higher-order harmonics are heavily damped due to the presence of the non-local factor. The spectrum of the theory is analysed for the non-local Yang--Mills sector and found to be in agreement with the local results on the lattice in the limit of the non-locality mass parameter running to infinity. In the non-local case, we confine ourselves to a non-locality mass that is sufficiently large compared to the mass scale arising from the integration of the Dyson--Schwinger equations. Such a choice results in good agreement, in the proper limit, with the spectrum of the local theory. We derive the gap equation for the fermions in the theory that gives some indication of quark confinement in the non-local NJL case as well. Confinement seems to be a rather ubiquitous effect that removes some degrees of freedom in the original action, favouring the appearance of new observable states, as seen, e.g.,\ for quantum chromodynamics at lower energies.

Ultraviolet-complete quantum field theories with fractional operators

Abstract:We explore quantum field theories with fractional d'Alembertian $\Box^\gamma$. Both a scalar field theory with a derivative-dependent potential and gauge theory are super-renormalizable for a fractional power $1<\gamma\leq 2$, one-loop super-renormalizable for $\gamma>2$ and finite if one introduces killer operators. Unitarity is achieved by splitting the kinetic term into the product of massive fractional operators, eventually sending the masses to zero if so desired. Fractional quantum gravity is also discussed and found to be super-renormalizable for $2<\gamma\leq 4$ and one-loop super-renormalizable for $\gamma>4$. To make it unitary, we combine the splitting procedure with a fractional generalization of the Anselmi-Piva procedure for fakeons. Among new technical results with wider applications, we highlight the Leibniz rule for arbitrary powers of the d'Alembertian and the Källén-Lehmann representation for a propagator with an arbitrary number of branch cuts.

Gauge Theories With Infinite Multiplets of Fermions

Abstract:We study the coupling constant renormalization of gauge theories with an infinite multiplet of fermions, using the zeta function method to make sense of the infinite sums over fermions. If the gauge group K is the maximal compact subgroup of a simple non-compact group G, such infinite multiplets can arise naturally, as reductions of discrete series unitary representations of G. The example K=U(1) and G=SU(1,1) will be studied in detail. Surprisingly, there are abelian gauge theories which are asymptotically free; and others that are UV finite.

Abstract:The infrared behaviour of the n-point functions of a Yang-Mills theory with a charged scalar field in the fundamental representation of SU(N) is studied in the formalism of Dyson-Schwinger equations. Assuming a stable skeleton expansion solutions in form of power laws for the Green functions are obtained. For a massless scalar field the uniform limit is sufficient to describe the infrared scaling behaviour of vertices. Not taking into account a possible Higgs-phase it turns out that kinematic singularities play an important role for the scaling solutions of massive scalars. On a qualitative level scalar Yang-Mills theory yields similar scaling solutions as recently obtained for QCD.

A New Non-Renormalization Theorem from UV/IR Mixing

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a new non-renormalization theorem which arises from UV/IR mixing. This theorem and its corollaries are relevant for all four-dimensional tachyon-free closed string theories which can be realized from higher-dimensional theories via geometric compactifications. As such, they therefore apply regardless of the presence or absence of spacetime supersymmetry and regardless of the gauge symmetries or matter content involved. This theorem resolves a hidden clash between modular invariance and the process of decompactification, and enables us to uncover a number of surprising phenomenological properties of these theories. Chief among these is the fact that certain physical quantities within such theories cannot exhibit logarithmic or power-law running and instead enter an effective fixed-point regime above the compactification scale. This cessation of running occurs as the result of the UV/IR mixing inherent in the theory. These effects apply not only for gauge couplings but also for the Higgs mass and other quantities of phenomenological interest, thereby eliminating the logarithmic and/or power-law running that might have otherwise appeared for such quantities. These results illustrate the power of UV/IR mixing to tame divergences -- even without supersymmetry -- and reinforce the notion that UV/IR mixing may play a vital role in resolving hierarchy problems without supersymmetry.

Abstract:We investigate ultraviolet fixed points in the real-time evolution of non-Abelian gauge fields. Classical-statistical lattice simulations reveal equal-time correlation functions with a spectral index 3/2. Analytical understanding of this result is achieved by employing a 2PI- loop expansion for the quantum theory.

Abstract:The non-local quantum field theories attract interest in the mathematical and physical community as candidates for effective description of the reality taking into account the quantum gravity effects. The standard methods, developed for the conventional local quantum field theories, often are not applicable. In this paper the Hamiltonian approach, originally proposed for quantization of the non-local effective theory inspired by non-commutative geometry of the Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts Quantum Spacetime, is generalized to a large class of ultraviolet finite non-local Hamiltonian perturbative Quantum Field Theories. General properties of such theories are discussed. The weak adiabatic limit existence is proved for the whole class of theories.

Abstract:The existence of a fundamental ultraviolet scale, such as the Planck scale, may lead to modifications of the dispersion relations for particles at high energies, in some scenarios of quantum gravity. We apply effective field theory to this problem and identify dimension 5 operators that do not mix with dimensions 3 and 4 and lead to cubic modifications of dispersion relations for scalars, fermions, and vector particles. Further we show that, for electrons, photons and light quarks, clock comparison experiments bound these operators at 10^{-5}/Mpl.

Generalized Wigner-Weyl calculus for gauge theory and non-dissipative transport

Abstract:We consider a theory of fermions interacting with a (in general, non-Abelian) gauge field. The theory is assumed to be essentially inhomogeneous, which might be provided by non-trivial background fields interacting with both fermions and gauge bosons. For this theory, a version of Wigner-Weyl calculus is constructed, in which the Wigner transformation of the fermion Green function belongs to the adjoint representation of the gauge group. We demonstrate the power of the proposed formalism through the representation of responses of vector and axial currents to the gauge field strength through the topological invariants composed of the Wigner transformed two-point Green functions. This way a new family of non-dissipative transport phenomena is introduced. In particular, we discuss the non-Abelian versions of the chiral separation effect and of the quantum Hall effect.

Abstract:We discuss both the UV and IR origin of the one-loop triangle gauge anomalies for noncommutative nonabelian chiral gauge theories with fundamental, adjoint and bi-fundamental fermions for U(N) groups. We find that gauge anomalies only come from planar triangle diagrams, the non-planar triangle contributions giving rise to no breaking of the Ward identies. Generally speaking, theories with fundamental and bi-fundamental chiral matter are anomalous. Theories with only adjoint chiral fermions are anomaly free.
