Abstract:We study 1-loop MHV amplitudes in 𝒩 = 4 super Yang-Mills theory and in 𝒩 = 8 supergravity. For Yang-Mills we find that the simple form for the full amplitude presented by Del Duca, Dixon and Maltoni naturally leads to one that has physical residues on all compact contours. After expanding the simple form in terms of standard scalar integrals, we introduce redundancies under certain symmetry considerations to impose the color-kinematics duality of Bern, Carrasco and Johansson (BCJ). For five particles we directly find the results of Carrasco and Johansson as well as a new compact form for the supergravity amplitude. For six particles we find that all kinematic dual Jacobi identities are encapsulated in a single functional equation relating the expansion coefficients. By the BCJ double-copy construction we obtain a formula for the corresponding 𝒩 = 8 super-gravity amplitude. Quite surprisingly, all physical information becomes independent of the expansion coefficients modulo the functional equation. In other words, there is no need to solve the functional equation at all. This is quite welcome as the functional equation we find, using our restricted set of redundancies, actually has no solutions. For this reason we call these results virtual color-kinematics duality. We end with speculations about the meaning of an interesting global vs. local feature of the functional equation and the situation at higher points.

Abstract:In this lecture we summarize recent calculations pointing to the possible ultraviolet finiteness of N = 8 supergravity in four dimensions. We outline the modern unitarity method, which enables multiloop calculations in this theory and allows us to exploit a remarkable relation between tree-level gravity and gauge-theory amplitudes. We also describe a link between observed cancellations at loop level and improved behavior of tree-level amplitudes under large complex deformations of momenta.

Abstract:In this chapter, we present a scattering-amplitudes perspective on supergravity, and describe its application to the study of ultraviolet properties of supergravity theories at high loop orders. The basic on-shell tools that make such calculations feasible are reviewed, including generalized unitarity, color-kinematics duality, and the double-copy construction. We also outline the web of theories connected by the double copy. The results of various calculations of potential ultraviolet divergences are summarized. These include puzzling enhanced ultraviolet cancellations, for which no symmetry-based understanding currently exists, showing that there is much more to learn about the ultraviolet properties of supergravity theories. We finally comment on future calculations that should help resolve the puzzles.

Abstract:We characterise possible identities among the two-loop partial amplitudes of gluon scattering in Yang-Mills theory. We use known amplitudes in an exhaustive search to identify potential new relations. We find two candidate relations which may extend to all-$n$ amplitudes.

Abstract:We consider the nonplanar universal anomalous dimension of twist-two operators at four loops in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and push its direct diagrammatic calculation through Lorentz spin j=20, one unit beyond the state of the art, so as to confirm the correctness of the general, all-j result conjectured previously by us [1] imposing certain constraints on its analytic form. Thanks to our new result, such constraints can be eliminated altogether. By the same token, this allows us to re-derive, in a completely independent way, the nonplanar four-loop cusp anomalous dimension by taking the large-j limit of the general result.

Abstract:Scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills-Einstein theories have been investigated mostly for compact gauge groups. While non-compact gauge groups are not physically viable in Yang-Mills theory, non-compact gaugings feature prominently in the supergravity literature, where any choice of perturbative vacuum spontaneously breaks the gauge group to a compact subgroup. In this paper, we formulate double-copy constructions for several five-dimensional N=2 supergravities with non-compact gauge groups. On one side of the double copy, we employ amplitudes from a super-Yang-Mills theory with a massive hypermultiplet. On the other, we use amplitudes from particular non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills-scalar theories with massive fermions, chosen to obey constraints coming from color/kinematics duality. Supergravities with massive self-dual tensors in five dimensions are also considered, showing that tensors are straightforwardly realized as double copies of gauge-theory fermions with suitable choices of signs in the corresponding solutions of the Dirac equation. We present several examples of these constructions, noting in particular the appearance of Heisenberg groups in the supergravity gauge symmetry and, in some cases, the possibility of exotic tensor-vector matter couplings.

Abstract:We construct an infinite class of new ultraviolet-complete four-graviton scattering amplitudes that reduce to Einstein gravity at low energies, vanish at high energies, are meromorphic, and exhibit a triple-product structure A(s)A(t)A(u) . Ultraviolet modifications of dispersion relations in effective field theory

Abstract:The existence of a fundamental ultraviolet scale, such as the Planck scale, may lead to modifications of the dispersion relations for particles at high energies, in some scenarios of quantum gravity. We apply effective field theory to this problem and identify dimension 5 operators that do not mix with dimensions 3 and 4 and lead to cubic modifications of dispersion relations for scalars, fermions, and vector particles. Further we show that, for electrons, photons and light quarks, clock comparison experiments bound these operators at 10^{-5}/Mpl.

Asymptotic Safety Guaranteed at Four Loop

Abstract:We investigate a family of four-dimensional quantum field theories with weakly interacting ultraviolet fixed points up to four loop order in perturbation theory. Key new ingredients are the three loop gauge contributions to quartic scalar beta functions, which we compute in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme for a template $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory coupled to $N_f$ fundamental fermions and elementary scalars. We then determine fixed point couplings, field and mass anomalous dimensions, and universal scaling exponents up to the first three non-trivial orders in a small Veneziano parameter. The phase diagram and UV-IR connecting trajectories are found and contrasted with asymptotic freedom. Further, the size of the conformal window, unitarity, and mechanisms leading to the loss of conformality are investigated. Our results provide blueprints for concrete 4d non-supersymmetric conformal field theories with standard model-like field content, and invite further model building.

Abstract:The $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in $\mathbb R^4\times S^1$ spacetime is studied as a simple toy model of Gauge-Higgs unification. The theory is perturbatively nonrenormalizable but could be formulated as an asymptotically safe theory, namely a nonperturbatively renormalizable theory. We study the fixed point structure of the Yang-Mills theory in $\mathbb R^4\times S^1$ by using the functional renormalization group in the background field approximation. We derive the functional flow equations for the gauge coupling and the background gauge-field potential. There exists a nontrivial fixed point for both couplings at finite compactification radii. At the fixed point, gauge coupling and vacuum energy are both relevant. The renormalization group flow of the gauge coupling describes the smooth transition between the ultraviolet asymptotically safe regime and the strong interacting infrared limit.

Abstract:We identify novel structure in newly computed multi-loop amplitudes and quantum actions for even-point effective field theories, including both the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and double-copy gauge theories such as Born-Infeld and its supersymmetric generalizations. We exploit special properties of all even-point theories towards establishing an efficient unitarity based amplitude construction. In doing so, we find evidence that the leading IR divergence of NLSM amplitudes exponentiates when the target space is 1 ≅ SU(2)/U(1). We then systematically compute the two-loop anomalous behavior of Born-Infeld, and find that the counterterms needed to restore U(1) invariant behavior at loop-level can be constructed via a symmetric-structure double-copy. We also demonstrate that the divergent part of the one-minus (−+++) two-loop anomaly vanishes upon introducing an evanescent operator. In addition to these purely photonic counterterms, we verify through explicit calculation that the anomalous matrix elements that violate U(1) duality invariance can be alternatively cancelled by summing over internal = 4 DBIVA superfields. Finally we find that = 4 Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov (DBIVA) amplitudes admit double-copy construction through two-loop order by reproducing our unitarity based result with a double copy between color-dual = 4 super-Yang-Mills and our two-loop NLSM amplitudes. This result supports the possibility of color-dual representations for NLSM beyond one-loop. We conclude with an overview of how D -dimensional four-photon counterterms can be constructed in generality with the symmetric-structure double-copy, and outline a convenient way of counting evanescent operators using Hilbert series as generating functions.

A New Non-Renormalization Theorem from UV/IR Mixing

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a new non-renormalization theorem which arises from UV/IR mixing. This theorem and its corollaries are relevant for all four-dimensional tachyon-free closed string theories which can be realized from higher-dimensional theories via geometric compactifications. As such, they therefore apply regardless of the presence or absence of spacetime supersymmetry and regardless of the gauge symmetries or matter content involved. This theorem resolves a hidden clash between modular invariance and the process of decompactification, and enables us to uncover a number of surprising phenomenological properties of these theories. Chief among these is the fact that certain physical quantities within such theories cannot exhibit logarithmic or power-law running and instead enter an effective fixed-point regime above the compactification scale. This cessation of running occurs as the result of the UV/IR mixing inherent in the theory. These effects apply not only for gauge couplings but also for the Higgs mass and other quantities of phenomenological interest, thereby eliminating the logarithmic and/or power-law running that might have otherwise appeared for such quantities. These results illustrate the power of UV/IR mixing to tame divergences -- even without supersymmetry -- and reinforce the notion that UV/IR mixing may play a vital role in resolving hierarchy problems without supersymmetry.

Two-Loop Divergences of Massive Scattering Amplitudes in Non-Abelian Gauge Theories

Abstract:The infrared divergences of QCD scattering amplitudes can be derived from an anomalous dimension Γ, which is a matrix in color space and depends on the momenta and masses of the external partons. It has recently been shown that in cases where there are at least two massive partons involved in the scattering process, starting at two-loop order Γ receives contributions involving color and momentum correlations between three (and more) partons. The three-parton correlations can be described by two universal functions F1 and f2. In this paper these functions are calculated at two-loop order in closed analytic form and their properties are studied in detail. Both functions are found to be suppressed like (m4/s2) in the limit of small parton masses, in accordance with mass factorization theorems proposed in the literature. On the other hand, both functions are (1) and even diverge logarithmically near the threshold for pair production of two heavy particles. As an application, we calculate the infrared poles in the q → t and gg → t scattering amplitudes at two-loop order.

Abstract:We study a scalar component of the 8-point next-to-next-to-maximally-helicity-violating (N 2 MHV) amplitude at two-loop level in = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory; it has a leading singularity proportional to the inverse of the four-mass-box square root and receives contributions from only two types of non-trivial integrals with one-loop infrared (IR) divergences. We compute such two-loop 8-point integrals by taking (double-)collinear limits of certain finite, dual-conformal-invariant integrals, and they nicely give the IR-safe ratio function after subtracting divergences. As the first genuine two-loop N 2 MHV amplitude computed explicitly, we find remarkable structures in its symbol and alphabet: similar to the next-to-MHV (NMHV) case, there are still 9 algebraic letters associated with the square root, and the latter also becomes a letter for the first time; unlike the NMHV case, such algebraic letters appear at either one or all of the second, third and last entry, and the part with three odd letters is particularly simple.

Four-point functions and contact terms from higher-spin Ward identities of Chern-Simons-matter theory

Abstract:Large $N$ quasifermionic ($QF$) Chern-Simons-matter theories exhibit weakly-broken higher-spin symmetry and contain an infinite-dimensional algebra of almost-conserved higher-spin currents. By analyzing local higher-spin Ward identities, we constrain the higher-spin algebra of this theory, for operators of spin $s<4$. The solution interpolates smoothly between Ward identities of free-fermionic and critical-bosonic $U(N)$ models, in accordance with the bosonization duality. At finite 't Hooft coupling, we decompose four-point current correlators involving $(\partial\cdot J_3)^{QF}$ in terms of free theory structures and identify possible epsilon-transform relations for $QF$ four-point functions. Additionally, we find that higher correlators of the theory develop scheme-independent higher-spin contact terms, stemming from the presence of a background Chern-Simons term in the effective action. These terms are related to similar contact terms of the associated quasibosonic Chern-Simons-matter theory via Legendre transform. The results are supplemented by perturbative checks, including collinear limit computations of $\langle T_{--}J_+J_+\rangle_{QF}$, $\langle T_{--}J_+J_+O\rangle_{QF}$ and $\langle J_{ -- }J_+J_+J_+\rangle_{QF}$.
