Abstract:Nanostructure and morphology and their development of poly(di-n-hexylsilane) (PDHS) and poly(di-n-butylsilane) (PDBS) during the crystal-mesophase transition are investigated using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide angle X-ray diffraction and hot-stage atomic force microscopy. At room temperature, PDHS consists of stacks of lamellae separated by mesophase layers, which can be well accounted using an ideal two-phase model. During the crystal-mesophase transition, obvious morphological changes are observed due to the marked changes in main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase. In contrast to PDHS, the lamellae in PDBS barely show anisotropy in dimensions at room temperature. The nonperiodic structure and rather small electronic density fluctuation in PDBS lead to the much weak SAXS. The nonperiodic structure is preserved during the crystal-mesophase transition because of the similarity of main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase. Abstract:By elaborate adjustment of synthesis conditions, cubic (Pm (3) over barn) SBA-1 samples with well-defined crystal morphologies of a large number of facets have been synthesized, which are supposed to be obtained as a result of highly isotropic crystal growth under the conditions near thermodynamic equilibrium. The high-resolution transmission electron microscope image revealed regular periodicity over very large areas and this clearly indicates the crystal is a single crystal with a well-ordered mesostructure.

Abstract:Zeolites are microporous aluminosilicate materials that have been used as industrial catalysts and adsorbents. The mechanism of formation of crystalline structures during the synthesis and the possible intermediate structures are not completely understood because the structural analysis of amorphous intermediates is significantly difficult. Here we observe the structural evolution of zeolite precursors to form crystalline zeolites using in situ X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. In situ X-ray PDFs showed the local ordering behavior of the aluminosilicate species at the atomic level. Furthermore, the in situ relative PDF analysis allowed the study of the structural evolution of the amorphous precursors before the crystallization started (the crystallization induction period). These results provide a direct and clear visualization of the structural evolution during the crystallization of zeolites, which has not been achieved with other techniques, and may lead to the creation of advanced zeolites and zeolite-based materials.

Abstract:This chapter discusses the structural analysis of meso-porous materials by electron microscopy. Many mesoporous materials are synthesized using self-organization of amphiphilic molecules, surfactants, and polymers under either acidic or basic condition. These mesoporous crystals are structurally unique, in that they exhibit order on the mesoscopic-scale and disorder on the atomic-scale. The channels, cages, or pores, formed within the materials and supported/separated by an amorphous silica wall, are arranged periodically on a lattice like artificial atoms or molecules in ordinary crystals. The materials might, thus, be thought of as “cavity-crystal.” The meso-scale order is very sensitive to both synthesis conditions and synthesis time showing local structural variations caused by various local fluctuations in the former. X-ray difffaction (XRD) powder profile of the mesoporous crystals, in most cases, show a few broad peaks and, therefore, structure determination by XRD alone is difficult. As electrons interact with materials much more strongly than X-ray and electron scattering amplitudes are approximately 104 times larger those of X-rays, one can obtain the same structural information using electrons from a crystal volume 10–8 smaller than with X-rays. Crystals about of tens of nm are sufficiently large for single crystal transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation.

Abstract:The precisely defined geometry of phenylacetylene dendrimers and macrocycles makes it possible to investigate systematic variations in chemical architecture on the nature of microstructural organization. Here we report on transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy studies of crystalline phases of these synthetic materials. Since the molecules are sensitive to electron beam damage, low-dose techniques were used to capture images and diffraction patterns dynamically. The data show increased crystal misorientation with increasing side-group length and molecular complexity. As the size increases, the number of conformations available to the molecule also increases, making it difficult to pack the molecules with fewer defects.

Abstract:The structural analysis of silica mesoporous crystals (SMCs) is a key step for understanding their properties, especially toward drug delivery. Although various techniques can be applied, electron crystallography has been proved the most powerful method in the structure solution of mesoporous materials. In this chapter, we will begin with introducing basic crystallography and extend to the 3D structure solution using a set of HRTEM images. Typical examples will also be given to show the structure features of 2D, 3D, cage-type, and hyperbolic surface-type mesostructures. A drug delivery system using SMCs as a reservoir will be given at the end.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica materials are of interest for a wide range of applications. In many of these, elevated temperatures are used either in the preparation of the material or during its use. Therefore, an understanding of the effect of high temperature treatments on these materials is desirable. In this work, a detailed structural study is performed on silicas with three representative pore structures: a 2-D hexagonal pore arrangement (SBA-15), a continuous 3D cubic bimodal pore structure (KIT-6), and a 3D large cage pore structure (FDU-12). Each silica is studied as prepared and after treatment at a series of temperatures between 300 and 900°C. Pore structures are imaged using Transmission Electron Microscopy. This technique is used in conjunction with Small-Angle X-ray Diffraction, gas physisorption, and 29 Si solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Using these techniques, the pore size distributions, the unit cell dimensions of the mesoporous structures, and the relative occupancy of the distinct chemical environments of Si within them are cross correlated for the three silicas and their evolution with treatment temperature is elucidated. The physical and chemical properties before, during, and after collapse of these structures at high temperatures are described as are the differences in behavior between the three silica structures.

Direct Imaging of the Layer-by-layer Growth and Rod-Unit Repairing Defects of Mesoporous Silica SBA-15 by Cryo-Sem

Abstract:The formation process of highly ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15 in the final growth stage is investigated by combined techniques of cryogenic SEM, TEM, SAXS and nitrogen sorption analysis. SBA-15 matrices at different reaction times after the addition of silica source are captured using liquid nitrogen quenching. The effects of the hydrothermal treatments, “Pluronic P123/silica” rod-units for repairing and “hole-like” surface defects are studied in detail. Well-dispersed flocs with spheroidal-like and elongated-rod-like morphology made of “Pluronic P123/silica” composites are progressively formed on the surface of SBA-15 rods to repair the structural defects after the phase separation, accompanied by a process of both further cross-linking of silica species and mesostructure reorganization. Direct evidence from cryogenic SEM and TEM images confirms that the sizes of the repairing units evolve from several nanometres to several tens nanometres. A hydrothermal treatment at 130 °C further confirms that the “Pluronic P123/silica” repairing units is supplied from the original solution, suggesting that it plays a critical role in the reorganization of mesostructures. Moreover, closed and concaved terminals of the rod-like SBA-15 particles induced by inhomogeneous growth speeds are observed. A mechanism of rod-unit repairing defects and “layer-by-layer” growth is proposed. Our findings might give insights into the understanding of both the effects of the hydrothermal treatment on the structural reorganization of SBA-15 and of the growth process of nano-structures.

Abstract:Close-packed spheres can be stacked into two crystalline structures: cubic close-packed (ccp) and hexagonal close-packed (hcp). Both of these structures were found in silica mesoporous crystals (SMCs). Herein, pure hcp mesostructure with P6(3)/mmc symmetry of silica mesoporous crystals (SMCs) has been obtained in the synthetic system of cationic gemini surfactant as template and the N-[(3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine triacetix acid trisodium salt (EDTA-silyl) as the costructure directing agent (CSDA), which gives rise to the three-dimensional (3D) hexagonal structure and hexagonal plate morphology. The formation of the pure hcp structure was controlled by organic/inorganic interface curvature induced by charge matching between carboxylate groups of the CSDA and quaternary ammonium head groups of surfactant. Electrostatic potential distribution 3D map was reconstructed using Fourier analysis of HRTEM images based on electron crystallography, which showed characteristic features of the shape and connectivity of mesopores in the hcp structure. Small windows for connecting cages can be found only between layers, which determine the symmetry and local curvature of structures. As a result, the point group symmetry of mesopores becomes (6) over bar m2, instead of the m (3) over barm symmetry observed for perfect spheres in the ccp. The mechanism of stabilization and favorable growth of the pure hcp structure in mesoscale has been proposed based on synthesis strategy and symmetry support. This work provides people a better understanding of the priority of two sphere close-packed forms by comparing hcp and ccp structures.
Structural Analyses of Intergrowth and Stacking Fault in Cage-Type Mesoporous Crystals

Abstract:A mixture of Gemini cationic surfactant, costructure directing agent (CSDA) with carboxylate group, and silica oligomer leads to the formation of cage-type mesoporous crystals, and the system changes the structure from Fm (3) over barm (or P6(3)/mmc) type to Fd (3) over barm type with an increasing amount of additive (HCl). Here we have investigated the Fm (3) over barm-Fd (3) over barm type intergrowth and new type stacking fault observed in the intermediate phase using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and proposed a layer-by-layer growth mechanism. In order to describe the structures, four types of polyhedra for the tetrahedrally close-packed structures are introduced. In the intergrowth, the structure changes the packing of spherical micelles between the Fm (3) over barm (or P6(3)/mmc) and Fd (3) over barm structures depending on the pH. The results can be explained by the change between a hard sphere characteristic (perfect sphere) in the Fm (3) over barm structure and a soft sphere characteristic (polyhedron) in the Fd (3) over barm structure. The stacking fault in the Fd (3) over barm structure can be explained by new arrangement of two polyhedra, the 14- and 15-hedron.

Abstract:A novel synthesis route for mesoporous silicates using anionic surfactants has been recently reported. It was advanced that materials synthesized using anionic surfactants and aminosilane groups as co-structure directing agents led to the synthesis of highly ordered, novel mesoporous materials with unprecedented structural properties. Here we present an in-depth high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) investigation on the structural characteristics of these novel mesoporous solids denoted AMS-n (anionic mesoporous silicas). These materials show increased order in comparison with conventional mesoporous structures as a result of the long-range periodicity of structural modulations. Structural defects formed in these materials are investigated using electron diffraction (ED) and Fourier transform (FT) diffractograms. In addition we present a new cubic mesostructure AMS-8 (space group Mm). These new materials show promising new pore connectivities and morphologies making them ideal for applications ranging from catalysts' supports to gas separation, and from nanodevices to drug delivery.

Characterization of amorphous and crystalline silicon nanoclusters in ultra thin silica layers

Abstract:The nucleation and structure of silicon nanocrystals formed by different preparation conditions and silicon concentration (28 - 70 area %) have been studied using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy Filtered TEM (EFTEM) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS). The nanocrystals were formed after heat treatment at high temperature of a sputtered 10 nm thick silicon rich oxide on 3 nm SiO$_2$ layer made by Rapid Thermal Oxidation (RTO) of silicon. Nanocrystals precipitate when the excess silicon concentration exceeds 50 area %. Below this percentage amorphous silicon nanoclusters were found. In-situ heat treatment of the samples in the TEM showed that the crystallization requires a temperature above 800$^o$C. The nanocrystals precipitate in a 4 nm band, 5 nm from the Si substrate and 4 nm from the SiO$_2$ sample surface. The silicon nucleates where the excess Si concentration is the highest. The top surface has less excess Si due to reaction with oxygen from the ambient during annealing. The SiO$_2$-RTO layer is more Si rich due to Si diffusion from the SiO$_2$-Si layer into RTO. Twinning and stacking faults were found in nanocrystals with 4-10 nm in diameter. These types of defects may have large effects upon the usability of the material in electronic devices. Both single and double twin boundaries have been found in the nanocrystals by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Image simulations were carried out in order to obtain more information about the defects and nanocrystals. The stacking faults are extrinsic and located in the twin boundaries.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal evolution from precursors to bulk crystal shows the complex mechanism of Anatase crystallization. Intermediate stages show the presence of isolated nanosheets, aggregate sheets, faceted crystallites, and nanorods. The bulk crystals exhibit varied shapes and sizes depending on growth conditions. The study captures critical steps during the multistage aggregation and final transformation to crystal establishing the role of precursors. Engineering advanced functional materials such as Anatase crystals through the molecular tuning of crystal facets is the current enigma of interest pertinent to solving the structure‐property‐performance triad. Developing optimal shapes and sizes of crystallite necessitates exploring the nanoscopic growth mechanism via precursor tracking. Here, the tapestry of particles varying in dimensionality (0D–3D), sizes (8–3000 nm), and morphology (aggregated to highly faceted crystals) is generated. To decipher and subsequently modulate the crystallization pathways, high‐resolution microscopy (high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM)) is used to sketch time‐stamped particle evolution. Interestingly, the studies provide evidence for 4‐distinct mechanisms where nanoparticles/nanosheets play direct and/or indirect roles in crystallization through multi‐stage aggregation (primary, secondary, and tertiary) beginning with similar growth solutions. The four distinct pathways elucidate bulk particle formation via non‐classical routes of crystallization including nanosheet alignment and aggregation, nanocrystallite formation and fusion, nanobeads formation and attachment, and direct nanosheet incorporation in bulk crystals. Notably, the direct evidence of flexible‐partially‐ordered nanosheets being subsumed along the contours of bulk crystals is captured. These novel syntheses generated uniquely faceted particles with high‐indexed surface planes such as (004), (200), and (105), amenable to photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Atomic motion at grain boundaries is essential to microstructure development, growth and stability of catalysts and other nanostructured materials. However, boundary atomic motion is often too fast to observe in a conventional transmission electron microscope (TEM) and too slow for ultrafast electron microscopy. Here, we report on the entire transformation process of strained Pt icosahedral nanoparticles (ICNPs) into larger FCC crystals, captured at 2.5 ms time resolution using a fast electron camera. Results show slow diffusive dislocation motion at nm/s inside ICNPs and fast surface transformation at μm/s. By characterizing nanoparticle strain, we show that the fast transformation is driven by inhomogeneous surface stress. And interaction with pre-existing defects led to the slowdown of the transformation front inside the nanoparticles. Particle coalescence, assisted by oxygen-induced surface migration at T ≥ 300 °C, also played a critical role. Thus by studying transformation in the Pt ICNPs at high time and spatial resolution, we obtain critical insights into the transformation mechanisms in strained Pt nanoparticles.
