Abstract:This work deals with the promotion of immobilized Rh catalyst activities in olefin hydroformylation by lengthening the alkyl spacers and choosing an active Rh precursor. The flexibility of long chain alkyls was used to free the motion of the anchored Rh complex in confining porous spaces so as to increase the substrate activation efficiency. RhCl(CO)(PPh3)(2) was anchored to mesoporous silicas SBA-15 and MCM-41 through n-alkyl (carbon number n = 1, 3, 5, 8, 11) as spacer. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), isothermal N-2 sorption analysis and inductive coupling plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The multi-step-assembly of the complex into surface-organic modified mesoporous silica was monitored and evidenced by infrared spectroscopy (IR). The prepared Rh-immobilized catalysts were applied in 1-octene hydroformylation to nonyl aldehydes. Rh leaching in the reaction solutions was determined by ICP-MS, which was found to be satisfyingly low along with successful catalyst cycles. With the increase of the alkyl spacer length, the specific activity (shown as turnover number, TON) and stability of the immobilized catalyst were both increased. The catalyst prepared by the longest alkyl spacer (n = 11, C-11) revealed activity comparable to the homogeneous counterpart and resistance to the by-product poisoning. RhCl(CO)(PPh3)(2)-supported catalysts were also prepared by impregnating RhCl(CO)(PPh3)(2) into SBA-15 and MCM-41 without the presence of diphenylphosphinoalkyl, the prepared catalysts showed a sharp activity decrease within only two catalyst cycles, owing to the significant active species leaching.

Abstract:RhCl3 was immobilized to diphenylphosphinopropyl (-PrPPh2)-modified mesoporous silica SBA-15 through a multi-step-assembly process. The prepared catalyst was characterized with reference to bulky and surface properties by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), isothermal nitrogen sorption analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The metal content was determined by inductive coupling plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The prepared rhodium-immobilized catalyst was employed in hydroformylation of several higher olefins of different lengths (C-6, C-8, and C-10), different C=C bond positions (terminal or internal) or different structures (linear or branched). The substrate influences on the activity and recycling stability of the immobilized catalyst were investigated and are discussed. Shorter linear olefin substrates were more easily activated with higher catalyst specific activity, while the catalyst showed recycling stability in hydroformylation of longer and branched olefin substrates. For comparison, PPh3 was externally added to immobilize RhCl3 to -PrPPh2-modified SBA-15. An Improved Phase-Inversion Process for the Preparation of Silica/Poly[Styrene-Co-(Acrylic Acid)] Core-Shell Microspheres: Synthesis and Application in the Field of Polyolefin Catalysis

Abstract:Spherical and well-dispersed silica/poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (SiO2/PSA) core-shell particles have been synthesized using an improved phase-inversion process. The resulting particles were successfully used as supports for polyolefin catalysts in the production of polyethylene with broadmolecular weight distribution. Through the vapor phase, instead of the liquid phase in the traditional process, a non-solvent was introduced into a mixture of micrometer-sized SiO2 and PSA solution. The core-shell structure of the resulting SiO2/PSA microspheres was confirmed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transfer infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis and measurement of nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. In order to avoid agglomeration of particles and to obtain a good dispersion of the SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres, the non-solvent was added slowly. As the concentration of PSA solution increased, the surface morphology of the core-shell particles became looser and more irregular. However, the surface area and the pore volume remained the same under varying PSA concentrations. The SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres obtained were used as a catalyst carrier system in which the core supported (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl2 and the shell supported TiCl4. Ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization results indicated that the zirconocene and titanium-based Ziegler-Natta catalysts were compatible in the hybrid catalyst, showing high activities. Abstract:A ligand (triphenyl phosphine, PPh3)-modified heterogeneous PPh3-Rh(CO)/SBA-15 catalyst and supported Wilkinson complex HRh(CO)(PPh3)(3)/SBA-15 catalyst were prepared and examined in the hydroformylation of propene. Heterogeneous PPh3-Rh(CO)/SBA-15 catalyst showed much higher activity and stability in this reaction. Multimuclear H-1, Si-29, P-31, and O-17 MAS NMR and two-dimensional O-17 MQ MAS NMR together with XRD and N-2 adsorption were employed to study the local structures of these two catalysts. Quantitative H-1 and Si-29 MAS NMR and qualitative one- and two-dimensional O-17 MAS and MQ MAS NMR indicate that in the presence of CO the silanols on the surface of SBA-15 can react with rhodium carbonyls to form the Si-O-Rh bonds at the interface between the catalyst and the support. IT MAS NMR spectra demonstrate a similar Wilkinson complex structure is produced on the heterogeneous PPh3-Ph(CO)/SBA-15 catalyst. The formation of Si-O-Rh bonds at the interface may immobilize the Rh complex during the long reaction. These may be correlated to the higher performances of heterogeneous PPh3-Rh(CO)/SBA-15 catalyst in propene hydroformylation.

Abstract:Multinuclear MAS NMR together with XRD and N2 adsorption were employed to characterize the local structures of heterogeneous Ph3P-Rh/SBA-15 and supported homogeneous HRh(CO)(PPh3)3/SBA-15 catalysts. It is found that Ph3P-Rh complex can be tightly grafted on SBA-15 through the Si-O-Rh bonds while much less such bonds are formed in the supported homogeneous counterpart. This can be correlated to the longer catalytic life of heterogeneous PPh3-Rh/SBA-15 for propylene hydroformylation.
Study on Ultrafine SiO_2 Supported Water-soluble Phosphine-Rh Complex Catalysts

Abstract:In this work an ultrafine SiO\-2 supported water\|soluble phosphine\|Rh complexes catalyst (ultrafine\|SiO\-2\|SAPC) has been developed for hydroformylation of 1\|hexene. The experimental results show that the ultrafine\|SiO\-2\|SAPC catalyst prepared by using SiO\-2 powder with particle sizes of 10~20 nm exhibits remarkably higher activity as compared to the reported granular SiO\-2\|SAPC catalyst and can maintain high activity with in wider range of water contents. An average TOF of a 450 h -1 run of 1\|hexene hydroformylation, where the selectivity to aldehyde is 100% and aldehyde n/i ratio is about 3.2, is obtained on the ultrafine\|SiO\-2\|SAPC containing 25%~55% of water under P/Rh(molar ratio)=50, 1\|hexene/\{Rh(molar ratio)=\}2 500, reaction temperature 373 K, and CO/H\-2 (1/1, volume ratio) pressure 4.0 MPa.
Olefin Metathesis over Heterogeneous Catalysts: Interfacial Interaction Between Mo Species and a Hβ−Al2O3 Composite Support

Abstract:The effect of molybdenum content on the structure and performance of Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts in olefin metathesis was examined. The optimal performance was obtained with a catalyst of 4-6 wt % Mo on a composite support of 70% H beta zeolite and 30% Al2O3. The interfacial interaction between the Mo species and the H beta-Al2O3 composite support was carefully studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, and multinuclear magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy. XRD and N-2 adsorption results indicate that some interactions may occur between the Mo species and the composite support during the sample preparation. Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectra show that this kind of interaction becomes more severe and leads to the dealumination of the framework and subsequent appearance of aluminum molybdate with increasing Mo loadings. Two-dimensional Al-27 MQ MAS NMR spectra further demonstrate that the framework Al on H beta zeolite at the specific T sites could be preferentially extracted upon Mo loading, which may result in the appropriate Bronsted acidity on the support as evidenced by the quantitative H-1 MAS NMR measurements. A moderate interaction of Mo species with the support and the proper acidity may be advantageous for the cross-metathesis of ethene and 2-butene to propene over heterogeneous catalysts.
Heterogeneous Ligand-Free Rhodium Oxide Catalyst Embedded within Zeolitic Microchannel to Enhance Regioselectivity in Hydroformylation

Abstract:This work reported the heterogeneous rhodium oxide catalyst encapsulated within microporous silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite (Rh2O3@S-1) through epitaxial growth of S-1 seeds pre-anchored with rhodium species. Based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results, S-1 seeds were successfully covered by the S-1 shell and rhodium oxide was meanwhile well embedded within the zeolitic microchannel. Furthermore, a thicker S-1 shell could be modulated by secondary epitaxial growth of the as-synthesized Rh2O3@S-1 (Rh2O3@S-1-II). Those catalysts, for the first time, were applied in hydroformylation of terminal olefins, i.e., 1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-decene, and 1-dodecene, and exhibited enhanced regioselectivity compared with the supported Rh2O3/S-1 catalyst. Strikingly, with more abundant and integrated S-1 microchannels, Rh2O3@S-1-II manifested relatively the most competitive regioselectivity in the field of ligand-free rhodium nanoparticle catalysts. Experimental results and spectroscopy investigations revealed that the promoted regioselectivity was the consequence of distinctive product diffusion rates endowed by the intrinsically steric hindrance of the S-1 microchannel around the rhodium oxide.

Abstract:8-Aminoquinoline nickel dichloride and bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride (Cp2ZrCl2) were supported simultaneously on silica to produce branched polyethylene successfully by combined polymerization. The supported polymerization results showed that the molecular weight of polyethylene increased while the molecular weight distribution became wider and the molecular chains of oligomers remaining in the final solution became shorter as compared to the oligomers obtained in polymerization processes with pure 8-aminoquinoline nickel dichloride catalysis, as well as the Cp2ZrCl2 and nickel combination system. With decreasing amount of Ni catalyst in the supported catalyst, the molecular chains of oligomers in the resulting solution became shorter, while alpha-olefin selectivity increased.

Abstract:RhCl(CO)(PPh 3 ) 2 was anchored to diphenylphosphinopropyl-modified (– Pr PPh 2 ) mesoporous silicate MCM-41. Infrared spectroscopy was applied to monitor the multi-step assemble of the complex by assigning critical absorptions. The prepared catalyst was employed in 1-octene hydroformylation and showed high conversion of substrate as well as high selectivity of nonyl aldeydes (>97%) along with several stable catalyst cycles. Rhodium leaching in the reaction liquids was determined by mass spectroscopy, which was found extremely low. The catalyst showed higher activity and lower metal loss than the analogue by nano SiO 2 as support, probably as a result of the confining of molecular sieves with ordered pores.

Abstract:The stability of Rh-based heterogeneous catalyst is a key issue in the hydroformylation of olefin. Confinement of active Rh species has been considered as an effective strategy to achieve stable catalyst. In this work, phosphine ligand was successfully confined in ZIF-8 material and coordinated with metal Rh by reduction procedure to develop an efficient and stable Rh-based catalyst for hydroformylation of 1-octene. The results indicate that the catalyst reduced at 300 oC under H2 atmosphere exhibits better stability than that with NaBH4 as reductant and undoped P catalyst. Various characterizations demonstrate that the superior performance is due to the strong interaction between metal Rh and P, inhibiting the leaching of Rh active species. This work opens an effective strategy for the synthesis of highly stable catalyst in the hydroformylation reaction.

A high-resolution MAS NMR study on the potential catalysts Mo/HBeta for olefin metathesis: The interaction of Mo species with HBeta zeolite

Abstract:The interfacial interaction of Mo species with the HBeta zeolite was studied by multinuclear MAS NMR, XRD and N2 adsorption. As proved by the quantitative 27Al MAS NMR, this interaction is so strong as to dealuminate the framework of HBeta, and leads to a new peak appearing at −14ppm, which indicates the formation of crystalline Al2(MoO4)3. This can also be detected by XRD measurements when the Mo loading is as high as 9.0wt.%. The corresponding quantitative 29Si and 1H MAS NMR spectra show that the amount of silanols and Brønsted acidic sites decrease obviously with increasing Mo loading. This also reveals an interaction between Mo species and HBeta support through an oxygen bridge resulting from condensation with the hydroxyls on the support. At higher Mo loadings, the interaction is so strong that it results in an extraction of aluminum from the zeolite framework, and subsequently appearance of Al2(MoO4)3 and loss of Brønsted acidic sites. These can be correlated to the low catalytic activity of Mo/HBeta in metathesis of ethylene and 2-butylene to propylene.
Effectively Regulating the Microenvironment of Atomically Dispersed Rh through Co and Pi to Promote the Selectivity in Olefin Hydroformylation

Abstract:In the study of heterogeneity of homogeneous processes, effective control of the microenvironment of active sites is a reliable means to improve the selectivity of products. Here, we develop a high-performance Rh-based atomically dispersed catalyst for olefin hydroformylation by controlling the electronic environment and spatial distribution of active metals on the supports, which is achieved through wet impregnation of Rh on ZnO modified with Pi and Co. Various characterizations demonstrate that Co weakens Rh–CO interactions and Pi promotes the formation of atomically dispersed Rh, which thereby improves the selectivity of linear aldehydes in hydroformylation. Abstract:The development of highly efficient and stable Rh-based heterogeneous catalysts for hydroformylation of heavier olefins is of both high fundamental and industrial interest, yet there still remains a tremendous challenge. In this contribution, a series of porous organic polymers bearing various concentrations of triphenylphosphine (PPh3()) moieties, a ligand of industrial choice, was synthesized and their performance in the hydroformylation of styrene, 1-ocetene, and 2-ocetene were investigated after metalation with Rh species. Both concentration of PPh3 moieties and pore structure of the polymers were found to influence the catalytic performance. The polymerbased rhodium catalysts demonstrated an increase in catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability when the concentration of PPh3 was increased and the porous polymer constructed by the functional PPh3 monomer (POL-PPh3) was found to be optimal among all the solid ligands tested. We anticipate these results will form the basis for a constructive perspective in the development of high performance heterogeneous Rh-based hydroformylation catalysts. Moreover, our observations indicate the considerable potential of porous organic polymers (POPs) as a new generation of heterogeneous catalytic platforms that may prove effective when targeting important but highly challenging reactions.
Hafnium and Zirconium Complexes Bearing SNN-Ligands Enhancing Catalytic Performances toward Ethylene/1-Octene Copolymerization

Abstract:The development of efficient catalysts is an ongoing pursuit in the field of olefin polymerization in order to synthesize desired polyolefins and to advance the present polymerization processes. In this contribution, the synthesis and characterization of a class of Hf and Zr complexes bearing SNN-tridentate ligands were described. The Hf (Hf1 and Hf2) and Zr (Zr1 and Zr2) trimethyl complexes were synthesized by one-pot reactions of thio-imino-quinoline ligands with in situ formed MMe4 (M = Hf, Zr). Both NMR analysis and X-ray diffraction study suggest the formation of thio-amido-quinoline metal complexes via methyl migration from Hf (or Zr) to the carbon of imine. These Hf and Zr complexes exhibited high activity and excellent thermal stability toward ethylene/1-octene copolymerization and an activity as high as 2.57 × 106 g(PE)·mol–1(cat)·h–1 was obtained by Hf1 even at 150 °C. The resultant polymers had moderate to high molecular weights (6.1–41.3 × 104 g·mol–1) with very broad distributions (D̵ = 6.8–34.7). NMR study revealed that multiple active species were formed when Hf1 was activated by 1 equiv. of [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4].

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are considered the best candidates for olefin hydroformylation due to their combined advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. Unlike conventional organo-phosphine modification, Rh SAC is modified by introducing Ca, resulting in a significant increase in activity (maximum ∼5.7-fold) and stability. Furthermore, a volcano curve between Ca addition ratio and catalytic activity is found. Introducing Ca significantly increases activity by decreasing the energy barrier, but excessive Ca decreases activity due to hindering substrate adsorption and reaction.

Abstract:Heterogeneous hydroformylation enhances the separation process, avoiding the use of phosphine ligands and reducing the loss of precious metals. However, enhancing catalytic activity and elucidating reaction mechanisms remain challenging. In this work, we develop single-atom catalysts (SACs) of Rh-1/CeO2 with different morphologies and study their structure-performance relationships at the molecular level. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the Rh-1/CeO2-Rod catalysts reaches 9386 h(-1) with a relatively high Rh loading (1.08 wt %), outperforming most reported SACs. The presence of oxygen atoms with dangling bonds and the local stress surrounding the embedded Rh atoms are identified as the key factors behind the morphology effects. Our work deepens the molecular understanding of the morphology effects underlying the enhancement of hydroformylation activity and paves the way for the future design of highly active heterogeneous hydroformylation SACs with both high TOF and optimal Rh loading.
Regioselective Hydroformylation with Subnanometre Rh Clusters in MFI Zeolite

Abstract:Achieving the regioselective hydroformylation of linear alpha-olefins to linear aldehydes using solid catalysts with regioselectivities comparable to the corresponding homogeneous process is a great challenge in the chemical industry. Despite the tremendous efforts devoted to this research topic, most of the reported heterogeneous metal catalysts still give considerably lower regioselectivities than well-established homogeneous metal catalysts. Here we show the design of efficient Rh-zeolite catalysts, in which subnanometre Rh clusters are selectively confined in the sinusoidal ten-membered-ring channels of MFI zeolite, for the hydroformylation of long-chain linear alpha-olefins (C6-C12) into linear aldehydes with very high linear-to-branched aldehyde ratios (up to 400). The exceptional catalytic performances result from the involvement of the MFI zeolite framework as a rigid solid ligand that accommodates subnanometre Rh clusters in the sinusoidal channels of the MFI zeolite. Olefin hydroformylation is traditionally performed with homogeneous catalysts. Here the authors introduce a heterogeneous system based on zeolite-confined Rh clusters that is characterized by high efficiency for the hydroformylation of C6-C12 terminal olefins into linear aldehydes with high selectivity.

Abstract:In methanol-to-propylene reaction, the catalytic performance of ZSM-5 zeolite is strongly related to the material textural properties and surface acidity. In this work, the regulation of framework Al distribution (origin of the active Brønsted acid sites) in high-silica hierarchically structured ZSM-5 zeolite has been realized by a boron-modification procedure. When the B/Al ratio of the gel compositions (Si/Al = 200) reaches 7 or 9, the resultant B7- and B9-HSZ materials possess the expected hierarchically micro/mesoporous structures and increased framework Al distribution in the narrow straight/sinusoidal channels of MFI-type zeolite, which have been confirmed by the complementary characterizations, i.e. XRD, N2 sorption isotherms, ICP-OES, SEM, TEM, 27Al MAS NMR and the probe reaction of 1-hexene cracking. As a result, compared to the unmodified sample B0-HSZ and sample B3-HSZ with lower B-doping amount in the gels, they demonstrate the improved target propylene selectivity (49.3% and 48.9%) and elongated catalyst lifetime (88 h and 91 h) in MTP reaction under the WHSV of 2.8 h−1.
