The investigation into oral health knowledge and behaviors among medical undergraduates of China Medical University

Abstract:Objective To investigate oral health knowledge and behaviors among undergraduates of medical university,and provide information for implementing the instructive plan for oral health education.Methods The representative samples were selected from one medical university of Shenyang.The questionnaires were finished by 119 undergraduates and analyzed withχ2 test using SPSS 12.0 software package.Results The medical undergraduates lacked the basic oral health knowledge.Only 25.1% students knew'what is bacteria plaque',and only 42.7% students could answer 'the sucrose is the etiological factor of dental caries'.And their oral health awareness was week,with only 68.3% of the students visiting dentists when they had dental caries.However,their oral health behavior was better;89.9 % of the students brushed their teeth more than twice a day.The students who majored in dentistry had more positive attitudes and better behaviors than other medical students.Conclusion The medical undergraduates are short of oral health knowledge,but would like to accept oral health knowledge.Oral health education should be added to the college education.
