Abstract:$q$ numbers are introduced to replace $c$ numbers for the density function $\ensuremath{\rho}$ in a recent model of high-energy elastic scattering. The result is shown to be equivalent to the Glauber theory suitably generalized. The model leads naturally to the distinction between diffractive and nondiffractive excitation processes. The former has finite cross sections at infinite energy. Selection and intensities rules for diffractive excitation processes are discussed.

Abstract:Within the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model, in which the Lorentz covariant treatment of nuclear mean-field potential is considered, the fluctuations of net-baryon, net-charge, and deuteron multiplicity distributions in Au + Au head-on collisions at root s(NN) = 3.0-5.0 GeV are calculated. The results show that the nuclear mean-field potential can significantly enhance the magnitude of baryon number fluctuations in narrow rapidity windows, and this enhancement rapidly weakens with increasing beam energy. However, for proton and net-charge number fluctuations, the mean-field effects are less noticeable than that for baryon number. In addition, for net-charge number fluctuations, the negative binomial distribution agrees well with the calculated results at the midpseudorapidity window. Finally, the event-by-event fluctuations of deuteron number in the coalescence production picture are calculated as well, and it is found that its cumulant ratios decrease linearly with increasing the average multiplicity of deuterons per event, i.e., increase with increasing beam energy.

Abstract:The relation between multiplicity and transverse energy in high energy h-h and A-A collisions is investigated using a Monte Carlo generator of nondiffractive processes. The width of multiplicity fluctuation D/ for fixed E⊥ is found to be small and approximately constant for a wide range of E⊥.

Abstract:Parton energy loss inside a dense medium leads to the suppression of large p(T) hadrons and can also cause azimuthal anisotropy of hadron spectra at large transverse momentum in noncentral high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Such azimuthal anisotropy is studied qualitatively in a parton model for heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies. The coefficient upsilon (2)(p(T)) of the elliptic anisotropy at large p(T) is found to be very sensitive to parton energy loss. It decreases slowly with p(T) contrary to its low p(T) behavior where upsilon (2) increases. very rapidly with p(T). The turning point signals the onset of contributions of hard processes and the magnitude of parton energy loss. The centrality dependence of upsilon (2)(p(T)) is shown to be sensitive to both size and density dependence of the parton energy loss and the latter can also be studied via variation of the colliding energy. The anisotropy coefficient upsilon (2)/epsilon normalized by the spatial ellipticity epsilon is found to decrease significantly toward semiperipheral collisions, differing from the hydrodynamic results for low p(T) hadrons. Constrained by the existing WA98 experimental data at the SPS energy on parton energy loss, both hadron spectra suppression and azimuthal anisotropy at high p(T) are predicted to vanish for b > 7 - 8 fm in Au + Au collisions at roots = 130-200 GeV when the hadron rapidity density per unit area of the initial overlapped region is less than what is achieved in the central Pb + Pb collisions at the SPS energy.
Transverse Momentum in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions: Collective Expansion.

Abstract:Hadron production in the central region in high-energy nuclear collisions is investigated. The hydrodynamical expansion of a locally thermalized system is studied for both the cases with and without phase transition. The case with phase transition is considered by using a sound-velocity function ${c}_{s}$(T) parametrized to fit the energy density determined in a lattice gauge calculation. The effect of a transverse rarefaction wave is included in the calculation of the temperature profile of the expanding fluid. The transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons is calculated by collecting all the hadrons produced when the hadron gas is cooled down to a freeze-out temperature at different times in the expansion. Fluctuation in initial temperature and radius is allowed due to variation in impact parameter. On the basis of a study of the thermalization process in the parton model we impose a constraint on the initial temperature and the thermalization time, the simultaneous variation of both of which gives rise to a relationship between the average transverse momentum and rapidity density. We have found that there is no so-called ``plateau'' region in that relationship. The implication on the diagnostics of a quark-gluon plasma is discussed.

Abstract:Strongly intensive quantities sigma[P ( T ), N] and Delta[P ( T ), N] have become one of the important tools in study of phase transitions and critical points in high energy heavy-ion collisions. In this paper the properties of sigma[P ( T ), N] and Delta[P ( T ), N] are discussed within different colliding nuclei systems generated by the AMPT model. The combined event method are proposed to simulate the model of independent sources in which sigma[P ( T ), N] and Delta[P ( T ), N] are independent of the number of original events. The effects of transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and parton cascade are also discussed.

Abstract:Nontransference of charge is an essential aspect of the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation for infinite-energy hadron-hadron collisions. One can define experimentally a charge transfer $u$ from one c.m. momentum-space hemisphere to another. At finite energies, $u$ is not zero because the fragments may "spill over" to the other hemisphere. A model is discussed which yields an estimate of $u$. The general validity of the energy and multiplicity dependence of this estimate is then commented upon.

Abstract:Hadron spectra in high-energy pp, pA and AA collisions are analyzed in a pQCD parton model, including initial k(T) and its broadening via initial multiple scattering. Within this model the hadron spectra in both pp and pA of AA collisions can be described very well for p(T) > 2 GeV/c. The modification of the spectra in pA and AA as compared to that in pp collisions is consistent with multiple parton scattering scenario. Such an analysis will shed new light on the physics one can extract from the single inclusive hadron spectra, e.g., freeze-out temperature and flow velocity in a thermal fire-ball model, and parton energy loss in dense matter.

Abstract:It is argued that heavy-quarks traversing a Quark Gluon Plasma, undergo a multi-stage modification process, similar to the case of light flavors. Such an approach is applied to heavy-quark energy loss, which includes a rare-scattering, multiple emission formalism at momenta large compared to the mass (sensitive only to the transverse diffusion coefficient qˆ), and a single scattering induced emission formalism (Gunion-Bertsch) at momenta comparable to the mass of the quark [sensitive to qˆ, and the longitudinal drag (eˆ) and diffusion (eˆ2) coefficients]. The application of such a multi-stage approach within a 2+1D viscous fluid-dynamical simulation leads to simultaneous agreement with experimental data for the nuclear modification factor of both B and D mesons, as measured by the CMS collaboration at the LHC. The extracted transport coefficients are found to be consistent with those for light flavors.

Abstract:The rapidity-odd component of directed flow (v_1) of identified hardons (π^±, K^±, K^0_S, p, p̅, ϕ, Ξ, Ξ̅, Λ, Λ̅) and partons (u, u̅, d, d̅, s, s̅) in Au+Au collisions at various beam energies (√(s_ NN) = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 54.4, 62.4, 200 GeV) using a multi-phase transport model is analyzed. A data driven approach (inspired from the experimental analysis) is performed here to distinguish the transported and produced quarks which are found to have different directed flow values at various collision beam energies. The coalescence sum rule (Number of Constituent Quark scaling) violation is observed at lower energies where hadronic matters dominate. The strange quark (s) and ϕ meson slope (dv_1/dy) show a double sign change around 14.5 GeV, unlike other partons and hadrons. It suggests that strange quark is more sensitive to the softening of Equation of State (EoS).

Abstract:Gradient jet tomography in high-energy heavy-ion collisions utilizes the asymmetric transverse momentum broadening of a propagating parton in an inhomogeneous medium. Such broadening is studied within a path-integral description of the evolution of the Wigner distribution for a propagating parton in medium. Going beyond the eikonal approximation of multiple scattering, the evolution operator in the transverse direction can be expressed as the functional integration over all classical trajectories of a massive particle with the light-cone momentum. as its mass. With a dipole approximation of the Wilson line correlation function, evolution with the light-cone time t is determined by the jet transport coefficient (q) over cap that can vary with space and time. In a uniform medium with a constant (q) over cap0, the analytical solution to the Wigner distribution becomes a typical drifted Gaussian in both transverse momentum and coordinate with the diffusion width root(q) over cap0 t and root(q) over cap (0)t(3)/3 omega(2), respectively. In the case of a simple Gaussian-like transverse inhomogeneity with a spatial width sigma on top of a uniform medium, the final asymmetrical momentum distribution can be calculated semianalytically. The transverse asymmetry defined for jet gradient tomography that characterizes the asymmetrical distribution is found to linearly correlate with the initial transverse position of the propagating parton within the domain of the inhomogeneity. It decreases with the parton energy omega, increases with the propagation time initially and saturates when the diffusion distance is much larger than the size of the inhomogeneity or t(3) >> 3 omega(2)sigma(2)/(q) over cap0. The transverse momentum broadening due to the inhomogeneity also saturates at late times in contrast to the continued increase with time if the drifted diffusion in space is ignored.

Abstract:The free nucleon emission from intermediate-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions is proposed as a possible probe to study the high-momentum tail (HMT) in nucleon momentum distribution of nuclei. Within the framework of the isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model, the effect of HMT on free nucleon emission from the reactions of a light system C-12 + C-12 and heavy one Sn-124 + Sn-124 at the beam energies of 50 and 140 MeV/nucleon was investigated. We show that the probability of free nucleon emission, especially high-energy nucleons, is sensitive to the high-momentum component in nucleon momentum distribution of nuclei. The momentum distribution with HMT can lead to an increase of both high-energy free proton and neutron emission as compared to the free Fermi gas case for both symmetric and asymmetric nuclear systems.

Abstract:We consider momentum broadening and energy loss of high momentum partons in a hot non-Abelian plasma due to collisions. We solve the coupled system of Wong-Yang-Mills equations on a lattice in real time, including binary hard elastic collisions among the partons. The collision kernel is constructed such that the total collisional energy loss and momentum broadening are lattice spacing independent. We find that the transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ corresponding to transverse momentum broadening receives sizable contributions from a power-law tail in the $p_\perp$-distribution of high-momentum partons. We establish the scaling of $\hat{q}$ and of $dE/dx$ with density, temperature and energy in the weak-coupling regime. We also estimate the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ due to elastic energy loss of a jet in a classical Yang-Mills field.

Abstract:The transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity dependences of partonic Machlike shock wave have been studied by using a multiphase transport model with both partonic and hadronic interactions. The splitting parameter D, i.e., half distance between two splitting peaks on away side in di-hadron azimuthal angular (Delta phi) correlations, slightly increases with the transverse momentum of associated hadrons (p(T)(assoc)), which is consistent with preliminary experimental trend, owing to different interaction-lengths/numbers between wave partons and medium in strong parton cascade. However, the splitting parameter D as a function of pseudorapidity of associated hadrons (eta(assoc)), stays flat in the mid-pseudorapidity region and rapidly drops in the high-pseudorapidity region, which is a result of different violent degrees of jet-medium interactions in the medium that has different energy densities in the longitudinal direction. It is proposed that the research on the properties of Machlike correlation can shed light on the knowledge of both partonic and hadronic interactions at RHIC.
Evolution Effects on Parton Energy Loss with Detailed Balance

Abstract:The initial conditions in the chemical non-equilibrated medium and Bjorken expanding medium at RHIC are determined. With a set of rate equations describing the chemical equilibration of quarks and gluons based on perturbative QCD, we investigate the consequence for parton evolution at RHIC. With considering parton evolution, it is shown that the Debye screening mass and the inverse mean free-path of gluons reduce with increasing proper time in the QGP medium. The parton evolution affects the parton energy loss with detailed balance, both parton energy loss from stimulated emission in the chemical non-equilibrated expanding medium and in Bjorken expanding medium are linear dependent on the propagating distance rather than square dependent in the static medium. The energy absorption can not be neglected at intermediate jet energies and small propagating distance of the energetic parton in contrast with that it is important only at intermediate jet energy in the static medium. This will increase the energy and propagating distance dependence of the parton energy loss and will affect the shape of suppression of moderately high P_T hadron spectra.

On Extracting Thermal Parameters and Scenario in High-Energy Collisions

Abstract:In this minireview article, we examine the inconsistent results of thermal parameters derived from various models in high-energy collisions. Through a comprehensive literature review and based on the average transverse momentum or the root-mean-square transverse momentum, we propose model-independent parameters to address these inconsistencies. The relevant parameters include: the initial temperature, the effective temperature, the kinetic freeze-out temperature, and the average transverse velocity. Our findings indicate that these four parameters are larger in central collisions, within central rapidity regions, at higher energies, and in larger collision systems. As collision energy increases, excitation functions for all four parameters rise rapidly (slowly) within ranges below (above) approximately 7.7 GeV. At higher energies (>39) GeV, fluctuations occur in trends for these excitation functions, with only slight changes observed in their growth rates. Additionally, this work reveals a mass-dependent multi-temperature scenario pertaining to both initial states and kinetic freeze-out processes.

Abstract:A detailed investigation of the energy loss of gluons that traverse a thermal gluonic medium simulated within the perturbative QCD-based transport model BAMPS (a Boltzmann approach to multiparton scatterings) is presented in the first part of this work. For simplicity the medium response is neglected in these calculations. The energy loss from purely elastic interactions is compared with the case where radiative processes are consistently included based on the matrix element by Gunion and Bertsch. From this comparison, gluon multiplication processes gg -> ggg are found to be the dominant source of energy loss within the approach employed here. The consequences for the quenching of gluons with high transverse momentum in fully dynamic simulations of Au + Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energy of root s = 200A GeV are discussed in the second major part of this work. The results for central collisions as discussed in a previous publication are revisited, and first results on the nuclear modification factor R-AA for noncentral Au + Au collisions are presented. They show a decreased quenching compared to central collisions while retaining the same shape. The investigation of the elliptic flow v(2) is extended up to nonthermal transverse momenta of 10 GeV, exhibiting a maximum v(2) at roughly 4 to 5 GeV and a subsequent decrease. Finally the sensitivity of the aforementioned results on the specific implementation of the effective modeling of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect via a formation-time-based cutoff is explored.
