Abstract:This paper presents a new nonlinear diffusion method to address the problem of noise removal. In the method, the diffusion function is based on gradient detection. The local window in the square gradient domain is used to extract the gradient information accurately. The tests demonstrate the proposed method gets the best results both subjectively and objectively compared to the related gradient domain algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid image denoising algorithm based on directional diffusion is proposed. Specifically, we developed a new noise-removal model by combining the modified isotropic diffusion model and the modified Perona-Malik (PM) model. The novel hybrid model can adapt the diffusion process along the tangential direction of edges in the original image via a new control function based on the patch similarity modulus. In addition, the patch similarity modulus is used as the new structure indicator for the modified Perona-Malik model. The feature of second-order directional derivative of edge's tangential direction allows the proposed model to reduce the aliasing and the noise around edge during edge preserving smoothing. The proposed method is thus able to efficiently preserve the edges, textures, thin lines, weak edges, and fine details, meanwhile preventing the staircase effects. Computer experiments on synthetic image and nature images demonstrate that the proposed model achieves a better performance than the conventional partial differential equations models and some recent advanced models.

Abstract:This paper presents a new diffusion coefficient which is based on second order derivative and local entropy information for image denoising. In the proposed model, a second order derivative term is introduced, which reduces the staircasing effect and preserves edge in a processed image. The local entropy information can preserve texture. The Perona–Malik model with a new diffusion coefficient improves the denoised effects, and prevents edges from being over-smoothed. Comparative experiments show that the proposed model obtains more satisfied results than the other two existing models.

Abstract:Among various kinds of image denoising methods, the Perona–Malik model is a representative Partial Differential Equation based (PDE-based) algorithm which effectively removes the noise as well as having edge enhancement simultaneously through anisotropic diffusion controlled by the diffusion coefficient. However, the unstable behavior of the Perona–Malik model introduces staircasing artifacts in the processed images. To realize less diffusion in the texture region and to get more smooth in flat region while implementing image denoising, we propose an improved Perona–Malik model based on non-local means theory, which assumes that the image contains an extensive amount of self-similarity and uses the similarity between the region around the center pixel and the region outside the center pixel to give a more reasonable description of the image. The improved algorithm is applied on numerical simulation and practical images, and the quantitative analyzing results prove that the modified anisotropic diffusion model can preserve textures effectively while ruling out the noise, meanwhile, the staircasing effects are decreased obviously.

Abstract:We present a new diffusion method for noise reduction and feature preservation. Presently, denoising methods commonly use a first-order derivative to detect edges in order to achieve a good balance between noise removal and feature preserving. However, if edges are partly lost to a certain extent or contaminated severely by noise, these methods may not be able to detect them and thus fail to preserve various features in images. To overcome this problem, we propose a new and more sophisticated feature detector by combining first-and second-order derivatives for a nonlinear anisotropic diffusion model. Numerical experiments show that the new diffusion filter outperforms many popular filters for denoising images containing edges, blobs and ridges and textures made of these features.

Abstract:Hyperspectral Image (HSI) denoising is a crucial preprocessing step to ensure the accuracy of the subsequent HSI analysis and interpretation. Neural network methods recently achieve state-of-the-art performance in HSI denoising. Nevertheless, these methods are typically trained on specific noise models, which could limit their performance as noise models in HSI may vary across different spectral bands. To mitigate this problem, we introduce an HSI denoising method based on the Diffusion Model (DM) whose training process is independent of the noise model, noted as a noise-model-free method. In this method, we first introduce a DM for HSI by increasing the input and output dimensions to incorporate spectral and spatial information. We then derive a DM-based HSI denoising process for a common noise model. Moreover, to address the issue of overfitting during training, we have introduced a stochastic sampling method to more effectively balance the significance of both spatial and spectral information. Experimental results on in-distribution and out-of-distribution samples demonstrate the efficacy of our approach.

Abstract:A coupled PDE method for image denoising is proposed based on the Perona-Malik model and the fourth order PDE. The experiments show it is able to remove noises while preserving edges well and avoiding the block effect which is easily seen in the images processed by the second order PDE.

Abstract:A novel forward and backward diffusion based image denoising and enhancement method is proposed. In the proposed method, the direct gradient computation is replaced by a nonlinear structure tensor (NLST) to increase the robustness to noise; The shock filter item along the gradient direction is replaced by a forward or backward diffusion according with the adaptive threshold value of gradient; The corner structure is also enhanced by performing a backward diffusion in corner region. Two experimental results show that the proposed algorithm not only removes noise, but also efficiently enhances image texture details and no artifacts are produced.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel method for noise reduction based on Perona-Malik model. Traditional Perona-Malik model computes the diffusion coefficient by using image gradient, while in this paper, we use the phase congruency. The phase congruency is an illumination and contrast invariant method for detecting features of interest in an image, such as edges and corners. In fact, it not only enhances the features of interest in images but also can compensate for noise. Compared to the classical P-M method, as well as the bilateral filtering and non-local means algorithm, the experiments on real natural images demonstrated that the proposed method is effective at removing noise with great edge preservation.

Abstract:Digital image quality is disturbed by noise to some extent. Researchers proposed a series of wavelet transform, non-local mean, and partial differential equation denoising algorithms to obtain high-quality images for subsequent research. Removing noise and preserving the edges and details of the image has attracted wide publicity. Methods based on anisotropic diffusion models have recently gained popularity, but these lead to over-smooth the image details. In this paper, we propose an improved denoising algorithm based on the anisotropic diffusion model. Our method further modifies the diffusion coefficient of the denoising model based on fractional differential operator and Gauss curvature (FDOGC). We use the edge-preserving characteristic of bilateral filtering to recover the image texture and adjust the diffusion coefficient given the characteristics of local variance. To balance the performance of denoising and edge-preserving, we add a regularization term to the diffusion model. We conduct ablation studies to verify the effectiveness of the innovation points. Our method can adjust the counterpoise between noise removal and edge preservation. Extensive experiments on public standard datasets indicate the superiority of our algorithm, in terms of not only quantitative and qualitative evaluation but also better visual effects.

Abstract:In this paper, a discrete implementation method of the gradient field total variation is deduced, analyzed and tested. We use it to remove the noise in the image. The experiment result the shows that this method is better than the traditional denoising method based on the filter. It is mainly because that, in this method, the gradient of the image is kept unchanged when denoised. At last, It is proved that this method is correct.

Abstract:The Perona-Malik (PM) model, or the anisotropic diffusion, shows good performance for image restoration. However, it suffers from the so-called staircasing effect if the contrast parameter is small and otherwise cannot preserve edges. This paper proposes a modified Perona-Malik (MPM) model based on directional Laplacian, which diffuses image along the edge direction of the original image. A slightly weighted Laplacian is also integrated to suppress noise. The proposed model can alleviate the staircasing effect, preserve sharp discontinuities, and remove noise simultaneously. Experimental results compared with several relevant methods demonstrate the good performance of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Image denoising based on total variation may cause 'staircase effect' while the noise is removed.Using the coupled gradient fidelity term can effectively restrain 'staircase effect',but it makes edges obscured.This paper discussed the the way to detect smooth regions of an image.And three denoising methods with gradient fidelity term on smoothing region were proposed.Our methods can not only improve the denoising performance significantly,but also overcome 'staircase effect' and preserve the edges.Numerical experiments demonstrate our models are efficiency.

Abstract:To sove the minimization problem of the energy method in image denoising, the diffusion process of the Euler-Lagrange could be decomposed to the diffusions along the tangential direction and normal direction. In order to denoising and retained the texture information of the real scene as possible, at the texture pixels, the diffusion along the tangential direction should be retained and the diffusion along the normal direction should be controlled. Therefore we propose a new denoising method with edge diffusion along the tangential direction directly. The performance of this method is tested by single images in this thesis.

Abstract:A nonlinear partial differential equation model based on nonlocal information was proposed to remove noise and preserve the edges. Nonlocal gradient is introduced to detect the edges and adjust the speed of the diffusion inside and outside the smooth region.One-side scheme is taken for calculating the nonlocal gradient norm to preserve edge information in discret situation.Theorical analysis and numerical results demonstrate the performance of the new method.

Abstract:Based on the anisotropic diffusion equation, the disadvantages of high computational complexity and unstability in speckle noise elimination with the existing diffusion algorithms are analyzed. A new algorithm of diffusion direction estimation is proposed. The variances of stripe regions in four directions are adopted as the direction measure of local area in the image. The general and diagonal integral images are adopted for fast computation of the variances. The diffusion quantity of each pixel is determined by the differences between the current point and the eight adjacent pixels together with the weight coefficients in corresponding directions. Meanwhile, the diffusion equation and realization process are presented. Experimental results demonstrate that this method has strong adaptability. It can protect the texture details well during noise elimination, and reduce the consumption of time due to few iteration number.

Abstract:A nonlinear anisotropic hybrid diffusion equation is discussed for image denoising, which is a combination of mean curvature smoothing and Gaussian heat diffusion. First, we propose a new edge detection indicator, that is, the diffusivity function. Based on this diffusivity function, the new diffusion is nonlinear anisotropic and forward-backward. Unlike the Perona-Malik (PM) diffusion, the new forward-backward diffusion is adjustable and under control. Then, the existence, uniqueness, and long-time behavior of the new regularization equation of the model are established. Finally, using the explicit difference scheme (PM scheme) and implicit difference scheme (AOS scheme), we do numerical experiments for different images, respectively. Experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of the new model with respect to other known models.

Abstract:Comparing with the traditional image denoising methods,nonlinear diffusion has a very good performance in preserving the important characteristics of the image.Since the day the nonlinear diffusion method was proposed,a number of work has been done continuously to research and improve it.In this paper,a new nonlinear diffusion method is proposed in which the orientation information measure is used to control the diffusion coefficient.The orientation information measure can efficiently reflect the area character of the image.It also decreases the influence of noises without Gaussian convolution.The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method works well for image denoising while edge and detail information is substantially preserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for image denoising. Our method is an anisotropic diffusion model, and it is based on variation and partial differential equations. The new model not only overcomes the shortcoming of TV model, which does not fully comply with the morphologic principles of image processing, but also overcomes the shortcoming of ALM model, which depends on gradient information alone to determine the speed and direction of diffusion. Numerical results show that our model can maintain the main features of the image. The denoising effect of our model is better than some traditional models. The main feature of our new model is making the processed image retain edge feature and corner information of the image.
