Abstract:Powders of Fe-Cr, Fe-Mo, Ni, Co and atomised iron were mixed and the cold densification behaviour of this multiple alloy powder mixture was studied at a series of compaction pressures ranging from 30 to 165 MPa. Density measurement, scanning electronic microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to analyse the green compacts. In a parallel study, the densification behaviour of each of the atomised iron, Fe-Cr and Fe-Mo powders was also investigated and related to the compaction process of the multiple alloy green compacts. It was observed that the multiple alloy powder mixture was densified via two simultaneously occurring processes at high pressures. One was the flow and deformation of the atomised iron powder; and the other was the rearrangement and fracture of Cr-Fe and Mo-Fe powders. It was suggested that the compaction process of multiple alloy powder mixtures can be described by the compaction constitutive equation 1 - rho = k(1)e-(A1(p)1/2)-B-1+k(2)e(-A2(p)1/2)-B-2+ ... +k(n)e(-An(p)1/2)-B-n.
