Abstract:Adding vertical ribs is recognized as a useful practice for reducing wind effects on cooling towers. However, ribs are rarely used on cooling towers in China since Chinese Codes are insufficient to support the design of rough-walled cooling towers, and an understanding hampers the use of ribs, which thinks that increased surface roughness has limited effects on the maximum internal forces that control the structural design. To this end, wind tunnel model tests in both uniform flow field with negligible free-stream turbulence and atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) turbulent flow field are carried out in this article to meticulously study and quantify the surface roughness effects on both static and dynamic wind loads for the purpose of improving Chinese Codes first. Subsequently, a further step is taken to obtain wind effects on a full-scale large cooling tower at a high Re, which are employed to validate the results obtained in the wind tunnel. Finally, the veracity of the model test results is discussed by investigating the Reynolds number (Re) effects on them. It has been proved that the model test results for atmospheric boundary layer flow field are all obtained in the range of Re-independence and the conclusions drawn from model tests and full-scale measurements basically agree, so most model test results presented in this article can be directly applied to the full-scale condition without corrections.
Configuration, static and stability behavior of hyperboloidal cool-ing tower lattice shell composed of six-bar tetrahedral units

Abstract:A hyperboloidal lattice shell composed of six-bar tetrahedral units was proposed, which can be used as the main structure of a large steel cooling tower. The configuration of the lattice shell was discussed. It is simply formed and has both the characteristics of the single-layer lattice shell and double-layer lattice shell. Two arrangements of units as known as orthogonal ortho-laid type and orthogonal diagonal-laid type were summarized. Static, linear and nonlinear stability analysis was conducted in an orthogonal ortho-laid lattice shell. Results show that the lattice shell has clear static behavior and appropriate distribution of inner force. The structure has satisfying performance on both linear and nonlinear stability, which are not sensitive to structural imperfection. This lattice shell system has highly economical efficiency and can be easily constructed.

Abstract:In order to study the buckling and the critical wind speed of the natural draft cooling tower under wind loads, three scale models with different wall thicknesses are built by the 3D printing and then tested in the wind tunnel. The experimental results are compared with those obtained by the finite element method. The results show that the buckling occurs in the elastic region and the ratio of the wall thickness to the throat radius is the key parameter for the critical load. The critical wind pressures obtained by experiments are close to those designed by the current standards, which are about 1/4 of the results obtained by the finite element method, which shows that the design of the wall thickness based on the stability of the cooling tower in the current standard is conservative.

Abstract:In recent years, the steel-truss natural draft dry cooling technique has received attention owing to its advantages in better aseismic capability, shorter construction period, and preferable recycling. For cooling towers generating the draft force of air flow, its configuration may impact the thermal and flow performance of the steel-truss natural draft dry cooling system. With regard to the issue, this work explored the thermal and flow characteristics for the steel-truss natural draft dry cooling systems with four typical engineering tower configurations. By numerical simulation, the pressure, flow, and temperature contours were analyzed, then air mass flow rates and heat rejections were calculated and compared for the local air-cooled sectors and overall steel-truss natural draft dry cooling systems with those four tower configurations. The results present that tower 2 with the conical/cylindrical configuration had slightly lower heat rejection compared with tower 1 with the traditional hyperbolic configuration. Tower 3 with the hyperbolic/cylindrical configuration showed better thermo-flow performances than tower 1 at high crosswinds, while tower 4 with the completely cylindrical configuration appeared to have much reduced cooling capability under various crosswind conditions, along with strongly deteriorated thermal and flow behaviors. As for engineering application of the steel-truss natural draft dry cooling system, the traditional hyperbolic tower configuration is recommended for local regions with gentle wind, while for those areas with gale wind yearly, the hyperbolic/cylindrical integrated cooling tower is preferred.

Abstract:It was introduced a new type air-cooling tower,which was built up with triangular lattice structural system and horizontal stiffened rings.Under actions of dead & live loads,earthquake,temperature and wind loads,modeling and calculating work was done by STAAD software.Statical features and spatial performance of this structural system were discussed;distribution regularities of internal forces were analyzed for all kinds of members.And by changing stiffened rings quantities and diameter-to-camber ratio,the differences were achieved.Conclusion shows that this system has good structural integrity,bigger lateral stiffness and wind resisting capacity;it is suitable for construction of air-cooling tower.

Abstract:Wind load is the control load for the structural design of steel cooling towers, reducing wind load is beneficial to reduce the construction cost of a steel cooling tower. In this study, based on a passive flow control method, a design concept for setting holes in a cooling tower was proposed to reduce the wind load. Taking a 220 m high hyperbolic natural draft dry steel cooling tower as the research object, five elevations and two orientations of holes were established in models. Thermal performance analysis, wind field characteristic analysis, and structural behaviour analysis were used to evaluate the design concept of setting holes. The results showed that in the case where the relative elevation of holes is lower than 0.667, holes will significantly reduce the thermal performance of the cooling tower under wind conditions. In addition, holes in the middle area of the tower will reduce the wind suction in the crosswind direction to a certain extent. Compared with the cooling tower without holes, the steel consumption of the cooling tower with holes can be reduced by 951 t. The research results verified the feasibility of the design concept of setting holes in a cooling tower.

Abstract:In order to study the interaction between the internal pressures and external pressures on cooling tower, a wind tunnel model was made which can make possible the simultaneous measurement of internal and external pressures. The distribution of internal and external pressures under different surface roughnesses is investigated. The difference between the models with and without A-shape columns in the bottom is analyzed. Then the difference of the mean wind-induced responses considering and disregarding the internal pressures is also investigated. Results from study show that, if the model surface is smoother, the maximum negative external pressures are bigger. The models with and without A-shape columns in the bottom have significant difference of the internal pressure coefficients, whose mean values are about -0.4 and -0.7, respectively. The internal pressure can be approximately considered as even pressure, which will result in the circumferential membrane stresses of cooling tower.

Abstract:The methodology and important findings on dry cooling tower were summarized home and abroad. Cross wind can significantly alter the flow field around a dry cooling tower, resulting in asymmetrical wind intake, deflection of the plume flow and inverse cold flow at the outlet, which reduce the plant's efficiency and enhance the air pollution downstream. Much valuable research work have been done about the characteristics of the flow field around the tower, and also some ideas were proposed to reduce the negative influence of wind. However, so far no method has been verified as being ultimately effective in reducing the negative influence of cross wind, not to mention eliminating or even utilizing the wind effect. It is suggested that further study should focus more on the comprehensive flow field around dry cooling tower including the flow filed outside the tower shell and new design of tower structure to make use of the cross wind.

Abstract:Using the finite element code ABAQUS and taking account of the wind load reduction, this paper presents a set of construction simulation methods of concrete cooling towers. A natural draft cooling tower at Taishan nuclear power station in Guangdong province, China, under three speeds of construction is simulated. Displacement and stress distributions of the cooling tower in the different construction stages are obtained. Some interested parts of the cooling tower are analyzed in detail and the variations of displacements and stresses of these parts with the construction are concluded. A comparative study of the influence of construction speed on displacements and stresses is performed as well. The analyses and proposals of this paper may be used as reference to the cooling tower design and construction.
Numerical Study on Water Distribution of Natural Draft Wet Cooling Towers under Crosswind

Abstract:In order to improve the thermal performance of natural draft wet cooling tower under crosswind, a three-dimensional numerical model for heat and mass transfer of cooling towers was established. The comparison with the design parameters of the cooling tower shows that this model satisfies the requirements of the thermal performance computation of cooling tower. According to the numerical calculation of the cooling tower and the analysis of the temperature, humidity and velocity field under various crosswinds velocities, a scheme of partition water distribution of cooling tower was proposed to deal with the effect of crosswind. Using this scheme, the influence of various spray water density ratio k on the thermal performance of cooling tower were researched, and the results show that the heat transfer performance of the cooling tower can be effectively improved under a certain comparing with uniform water distribution. When the cross wind speed is in the range of 2-6 m/s and this partition water distribution scheme is applied, maximum reduction of the outlet water temperature will reach 1.01K comparing with uniform water distribution.

Abstract:To get larger cooling performance enhancement for natural draft dry cooling tower with vertical cooling deltas under crosswind, setting angles of wind-break walls were optimized. Considering specific structure of each cooling delta, an efficient numerical model was established and validated by some published results. Aerodynamic fields around cooling deltas under various crosswind speeds were presented, and outlet water temperatures of the two columns of cooling delta were exported as well. It was found that for each cooling delta, there was a difference in cooling performance between the two columns, which is closely related to the characteristic of main airflow outside the tower. Using the present model, air inflow deviation angles at cooling deltas' inlet were calculated, and the effects of air inflow deviation on outlet water temperatures of the two columns for corresponding cooling delta were explained in detail. Subsequently, at cooling deltas' inlet along radial direction of the tower, setting angles of wind-break walls were optimized equal to air inflow deviation angles when no airflow separation appeared outside the tower, while equal to zero when outside airflow separation occurred. In addition, wind-break walls with optimized setting angles were verified to be extremely effective, compared to the previous radial walls. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Influence of wind pressure distribution on wind-induced responses and local stability of a cooling tower

Abstract:The differences between wind-induced response of a cooling tower and its wind loads obtained from codes and those under wind tunnel tests were studied.A comparison was made among wind pressure distribution coefficients derived from Chinese,British and Germany codes.The wind loads on a large cooling tower obtained from tests and codes were compared.A finite element model for a tower shell-herringbone column-circular foundation-pile integration tower system was established.The influences of wind pressure distributions on wind-induced responses and local stability coefficients of the integration tower system were studied.The results showed that the wind pressure distribution coefficients on the top and bottom of the system are quite different from those on the middle of the system due to three-dimensional flow effects;the biggest values of wind-induced responses under tests and those from codes have differences,for example,the axial forces of herringbone columns and piles reach their biggest values under wind tunnel tests;the local stability coefficients of the system from Chinese,British and Germany codes are quite close to each other;the results of wind tunnel tests are larger than those of codes as a whole,the former's minimum values are 37.8% larger than those of the latter.
Structural Performance Analysis of a Cooling-Tower Shell with Meridional Geometric Imperfections

Abstract:The reinforced concrete hyperbolic cooling tower may have geometric imperfections,which stem from construction errors,the effect of creep/shrinkage of concrete,service loads,and so on.In order to investigate the influence of meridional geometric imperfections on hyperbolic cooling towers,two models,the perfect model and the constructed model,were analyzed by software ANSYS under various load cases to illustrate the structural performance,such as dynamic characteristics,static behaviors and stability.The results reveal that,the meridional geometric imperfections increase the lateral stiffness,enlarge the primary natural frequency and reduce the displacement under horizontal loads.In the vicinity of imperfections,stress concentration phenomenon is found under wind load or self-weight.In addition,according to the results of load combination,both hoop forces and meridional bending moments are augmented while hoop bending moments and meridional forces vary slightly.And temperature-induced structural performance is not sensitive to the imperfections.From the formulation in the national code,the local elastic buckling factor of the shell is reduced remarkably.Meanwhile,eigenvalue buckling analysis reflects that the buckling factor is increased under wind load while reduced under self-weight,i.e.,the deviation of hyperbolic curve produces different buckling features due to different kinds of loads.
Numerical Study of Natural Convection of Natural Draft Dry-cooling Tower

Abstract:The paper provides preliminary finding of the aerodynamic characteristics on a natural draft dry-cooling tower. Particular attention has been focused on the numerical study of natural convection, induced by heat exchange, inside the cooling tower under the designed working conditions. In the solution procedure, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation, which includes buoyancy force, is solved with finite-volume method on a non-staggered grid. The introduction of the buoyancy force in the Navier-Stokes equation is through the Boussinesq approxi- mation which relates the density variation to temperature in a linear manner. The present study illustrates that the performance of the cooling tower system, i. e. the volume flow rate, heat transfer rate, is closely related to atmospheric temperature as observed in practice. It is also established that the volume flow rate and the heat transfer rate exhibit linear relation with a nondimensional temperature parameter (which is proportional to Grashof number). This finding has great practical significance for cooling tower design as well as power station management.

Abstract:<p>A new draft equation involving swirling motions for natural draft dry cooling towers (NDDCTs) is derived and solved analytically. A 2-D axisymmetric model for a short NDDCT is built and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out to verify the theoretical predictions. Results show that the optimized location for swirl input is at the tower outlet to avoid the swirl decay. It is noted that the swirl influence on the air flow draft velocity gradually becomes significant especially when the dimensionless input swirl ratio exceeds 2. The theoretical predictions generally agree with the numerical results, but deviate when: (1) vortices adjacent to the wall occur in the presence of excessively strong swirl, in the case with swirl created by a thin source zone; (2) cold air inflow penetrates due to the significant heat exchanger resistance coefficient; (3) vortex breakdown appears, in the case with swirl filling the whole tower. All the aforementioned unfavourable phenomena are local effects and thus cannot be predicted by the draft equation unless proper local resistance terms are added.</p>

Global and Local Stability Checking Method of Natural Draft Cooling Towers During Construction

Abstract:Checking the global and local stability of cooling towers during construction is very important to construction safety and reasonable construction process. On the basis of existing researches and by combining the checking method of global and local stability of cooling towers in operation period given in the present design code, this paper presents a method with implementation steps to check the global and local stability of cooling towers during construction. The method is verified to be simple and effective by a cooling tower example. The example analysis indicates that the global stability of cooling towers decreases with the construction height and achieves the minimum when the topmost layer is just built, though it increases bit when all concrete layers reach the design strength. The local stability of cooling towers during construction is poor in the range of 1/5 to 3/5 tower height and should be paid great attention during construction.

Abstract:This article reports the findings on the adverse effect of the crosswindon the performance of natural draft cooling towers through numerical computationwith the k-ε eddy-viscosity turbulence model. It is observed here that the cause ofthe adverse effect of the crosswind on the cooling towers can be attributed to thearound flow effect which destroys the radial inflow into the cooling towers when thewind is absent. Hence, a significant deterioration in the heat transfer from the heatexchangers at lateral sides occurs.
