Abstract:Rare earth metal sandwiched Keggin-type heteropolyoxometalates, K-11[RE(PW11O39)(2)] (RE-PW11, RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy and Y), were anchored onto aminosilylated mesoporous silica SBA-15 and the resulting RE-PW11/APTS/SBA-15 materials were characterized by ICP, FT-IR, XRD, N-2 adsorption, (31)p MAS NMR and TEM. The RE-PW11 clusters preserve their structure in the surface-modified mesopores. The catalytic activity of RE-PW11 clusters was tested on heterogeneous oxidation of cyclohexene by H2O2. The interaction between RE-PW11 and amino groups grafted on the channel surface of SBA-15 leads to strong immobilization of RE-PW11 due to the introduction of the rare earth metal centre, which is against the leaching during the reaction. Abstract:The new mesoporous silica with large pore size, SBA-15, was aluminated through the reaction with aluminum chloride. The present alumination method showed a good control of aluminum content but little influence on the pore structure. Aluminum atoms were incorporated into the framework of SBA-15, which resulted in a new kind of mesoporous acid catalyst.

Abstract:The amino-functionalized mesoporous molecular sieve was prepared by using γ-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane to react with SBA-15. The results of XRD, SEM, surface area, elemental analysis, TG and FT-IR indicated that the organic amino group was successful tethered to SBA-15 while the hexagonal structural character was mostly retained.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:The introduction of mesoporous silicas in the 1990s has offered new opportunities for the engineering of ordered catalytic nanoreactors, but the acid properties of mesoporous silicas are rather poor. Herein, mesoporous silica (SBA-15) surfaces were functionalized by zirconium phosphate via two methods recently developed in our group. Zr(OPr)4 and POCl3 were used as appropriate precursors in both methods. The main difference between these methods lies in whether Zr(OPr)4 is grafted onto SBA-15 first and POCl3 second (method 1) or the grafting process takes place in one pot, with SBA-15, Zr(OPr)4, and POCl3 altogether (method 2). More zirconium phosphate could be grafted by repeating the above procedures. The materials were characterized by ICP-OES, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, TEM, 31P and 29Si MAS NMR, and NH3-TPD, and their applications in catalytic isopropanol dehydration, cumene cracking, and metal-ion adsorption were demonstrated. Aluminum phosphate-modified SBA-15 samples could be obtained via these two methods as well. This work enriches the family of metal phosphate-functionalized mesoporous silicas as new solid acid catalysts.

Abstract:The intrinsic heterogeneity of alumina (Al2O3) surface presents a challenge for the development of alumina-supported single-site heterogeneous catalysts and hinders the characterization of catalytic species at the molecular level as well as the elucidation of mechanistic details of the catalytic reactions. Here we report the use of aluminum hydroxide secondary building units (SBUs) in the MIL-53(Al) metal–organic framework (MOF) with the formula Al(μ2–OH)(BDC) (BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) as a uniform and structurally defined functional mimic of Al2O3 surface for supporting Earth-abundant metal (EAM) catalysts. Abstract:Treatment of mesoporous silicate SBA-15 with Sm[N(SiMe3)(2)](3) led to the formation of a novel organolanthanide/inorganic hybrid material [SBA-15]Sm[N(SiMe3)(2)](x) via abstraction of N(SiMe3)(2) by terminal silanol groups and subsequent surface silylation. The hybrid material was characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nitrogen sorption, indicating a successful tailoring inside the silicate SBA-15 and the maintenance of the well-ordered mesostructure. This hybrid material is a promising heterogeneous catalyst for the Tishchenko reaction, where it is superior to the homogeneous correspondent in deactivation behavior, reusability and relative tolerance to oxygen, particularly in the control of selectivity of mixed Tishchenko reaction due to the steric hindrance and the diffusion control derived from the surface confinement. Abstract:A novel bifunctional mesoporous material MA/SBA-15 has been synthesized in one pot by in situ introduction of aluminium and magnesium salts and controlling the synthesis conditions, with the framework insertion of aluminium and high dispersion of magnesia resulting in both the strong basic and acidic sites being simultaneously formed on SBA-15. Characterization by low angle X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption, high-resolution transmission electron microscopes (HRTEM), H-1 and Al-27 magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR has been carried out to evaluate the effect of the heteroatoms. The acidic-basic properties of bifunctional MA/SBA-15 have been assessed by NH3 and CO2-TPD experiments, the Hammett indicator method and titration. The results of H-1 and Al-27 magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR indicate that the location of most aluminium is in a tetrahedral coordination which results in a large amount of Bronsted acid sites. This novel material possesses high activity for the degradation of N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR), a typical volatile nitrosamine, which is attributed to the strong Bronsted acid sites.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica molecular sieves are a kind of unique catalyst support due to their large pore size and high surface area. Several methods have been developed to immobilize heteropolyacids (HPAs) inside the channels of these mesoporous silicas. The mesoporous silica-supported HPA materials have been widely used as recyclable catalysts in heterogeneous systems. They have shown high catalytic activities and shape selectivities in some reactions, compared to the parent HPAs in homogeneous systems. This review summarizes recent progress in the field of mesoporous silica-supported HPAs applied in the heterogeneous catalysis area and preparation of nanostructured metal oxides using HPAs as precursors and mesoporous silicas as hard templates.

Abstract:A solvent-free technique was employed for fast modification of mesoporous materials. Copper, chromium and iron oxide species could be highly dispersed in SBA-15 by manually grinding the corresponding precursor salts and the host, followed by calcinations for the first time. This method is more effective to spontaneously disperse oxide species onto SBA-15 than impregnation, probably forming monolayer or submonolayer dispersion of salts or oxides. Besides, Cr(VI) species dominate in the mixing sample while Cr(III) species dominate in the impregnation one. In the temperature programmed surface reaction of nitrosamines, the sample prepared by solvent-free method showed a higher catalytic activity than the impregnation one.

Abstract:Mesoporous aluminosilicates are promising solid acid catalysts. They are also excellent supports for transition metal catalysts for various catalytic applications. Synthesis of mesoporous aluminosilicates with controllable particle size, morphology, and structure, as well as adjustable acidity and high hydrothermal stability, is very desirable. In this work, we demonstrate the scalable synthesis of Al-SBA-15 microspheres with controllable physicochemical properties by using the microfluidic jet-spray-drying technology. The productivity is up to similar to 30 g of dried particles per nozzle per hour. The Al-SBA-15 microspheres possess uniform controllable micron sizes (27.5-70.2 mu m), variable surface morphologies, excellent hydrothermal stability (in pure steam at 800 degrees C), high surface areas (385-464 m(2)/g), ordered mesopore sizes (5.4-5.8 nm), and desirable acid properties. The dependence of various properties, including particle size, morphology, porosity, pore size, acidity, and hydrothermal stability, of the obtained Al-SBA-15 microspheres on experimental parameters including precursor composition (Si/Al ratio and solid content) and processing conditions (drying and calcination temperatures) is established. A unique morphology transition from smooth to wrinkled microsphere triggered by control of the Si/Al ratio and solid content is observed. The particle formation and morphology-evolution mechanism are discussed. The Al-SBA-15 microspheres exhibit high acid catalytic performance for aldol-condensation reaction between benzaldehyde and ethyl alcohol with a high benzaldehyde conversion (similar to 56.3%), a fast pseudo-first-order reaction rate (similar to 0.1344 h(-1)), and a high cyclic stability, superior to the commercial zeolite acid (H-ZSM-5). Several influencing factors on the catalytic performance of the obtained Al-SBA-15 microspheres are also studied.

Abstract:We report a method to prepare core-shell zeolite beta (*BEA) with an aluminous core and an epitaxial Si-rich shell. This method capitalizes on the inherent defects in *BEA crystals to simultaneously passivate acid sites on external surfaces and increase intracrystalline mesoporosity through facile post-hydrothermal synthesis modification in alkaline media. This process creates more hydrophobic materials by reducing silanol defects and enriching the shell in silica via a combination of dealumination and the relocation of silica from the core to the shell during intracrystalline mesopore formation. The catalytic consequences of *BEA core-shells relative to conventional analogues were tested using the biomass conversion of levulinic acid and n-butanol to n-butyl levulinate as a benchmark reaction. Our findings reveal that siliceous shells and intracrystalline mesopores synergistically enhance the performance of *BEA catalysts.

Abstract:In this project, the main aim is the design and present a novel and unique heterogeneous nanocatalyst based on a metal‐organic framework/covalently sulfonated magnetic SBA‐15 mesoporous silica composite with the emphasis on promoting clean and green synthetic transformations and increasing the catalytic properties. In more detail, initially, SBA‐15 containing magnetic nanoparticles was functionalized by a 1,3 propane sultone ligand. In the next step, the functionalized mesoporous substrate was used as a scaffold for the growth and synthesis of the zeolite imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8) crystals. The obtained composite was further applied as a suitable support for the immobilization of Pd nanoparticles via a post‐modification procedure and the generation of heterogeneous catalysts. The prepared Fe3O4@SBA‐15‐SO3H@ZIF‐8@Pd was incorporated as a heterogeneous and green catalyst in the Suzuki coupling reaction in the natural deep eutectic solvent with efficient recyclability.

Abstract:A simple and effective method denoted "pH-adjusting" is used to graft a large amount of heteroatoms such as Al and Ti to mesoporous silica material SBA-15. The products prepared by this method show highly ordered mesostructures with large surface areas and uniform mesopore size distribution. The results of ICP, EDX, Al-27 NMR, calcium ion-exchange capacity, and UV-vis spectra show that almost all the heteroatoms added into the initial reaction mixture can be introduced into the products, and moreover, the heteroatoms introduced by this route locate at mainly tetrahedrally coordinated sites.

Abstract:Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with atomically precise structures have sparked interest in catalysis. Unfortunately, their high aggregation tendency and the spatial resistance of surface ligands pose significant challenges. Herein, Au25 NCs are encapsulated into isoreticular metal- organic frameworks (MOFs), namely UiO-66-X (X = H, NH2, OH, and NO2), followed by the removal of surface ligands on Au25 NCs. The resulting surface-clean Au25 NCs, protected by the MOF spatial confinement, exhibit much superior activity and stability with respect to pristine Au25 NCs in the oxidative esterification of furfural. Remarkably, experimental and theoretical results jointly demonstrate that diverse functional groups on UiO-66-X modulate the Au25 electronic state, giving rise to the discriminated substrate adsorption energy of Au25@UiO-66-X. As a result, the high electron density and suitable substrate adsorption ability dominate the activity trend: Au25@UiO-66-NH2 > Au25@UiO-66-OH > Au25@UiO-66 > Au25@UiO-66-NO2. This work develops a new strategy for the stabilization of surface-clean metal NCs in pore wall-engineered MOFs for enhanced catalysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a convenient and effective approach to synthesizing mesoporous SBA-15 materials with increased surface area (up to 836.7cm3/g) and expanded microporosity (up to 0.22cm3/g), where the textural properties of the synthesized materials can be systematically controlled. These micro/mesoporous composite materials exhibit excellent performance in catalysis, adsorption and separation. Moreover, the synthesized materials that supported Pd catalysts obtained through impregnation and grafting approaches were tested to explore their flexibility in toluene elimination. Grafting is an effective method to obtain highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles compared with traditional impregnation approach. The catalyst prepared via the grafting procedure possesses higher activity and CO2 selectivity than that was prepared by impregnation method. Moreover, the catalytic performance of synthesized catalysts can be well sustained during the stability tests. Therefore, these novel Pd-supported catalysts are promising materials for effective removal of some types of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene.

Abstract:Ultrasonic waves are employed for the first time to incorporate ruthenium into the pore structure of SBA-15. The resultant materials were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman measurements. Only microporous channels of SBA-15 are confirmed to be filled with ruthenium, leaving the mesopores unaffected. Therefore, high surface area and ordered structure are maintained after the incorporation of ruthenium nanoparticles in the porous structure of SBA-15.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica SEA-15 molecular sieve has been synthesized and incorporated with aluminum via three different postsynthesis procedures by reacting SEA-15 with AlCl3 in dry ethanol (route 1), with aluminum isopropaxide in dry hexane (route 2) and with an aqueous solution of sodium aluminate (route 3) followed by calcination. Characterization by transmission electron microscopy, Nz adsorption, electron probe microanalysis, powder X-ray diffraction, Al-27 magic-angle-spinning NMR, and electron spin resonance spectroscopies has been carried out to evaluate the efficiency of these alumination methods and their effect on the pore structure and ion exchange capacity of SBA-15. The Si/Al ratios in the resulting materials are in close agreement with the composition in the postsynthesis mixtures over a range of 40-10, indicating that the aluminum is mostly incorporated into silica SBA-15. The silanol groups on the internal wall surfaces of SEA-15 are suggested to be the sites for aluminum incorporation. The incorporation procedure has a strong effect on the aluminum coordination, pore structure and ion exchange capacity of the resulting materials. At comparable Si/Al ratios around 20, the percentage of aluminum with tetrahedral symmetry in the synthesized materials is about 100% (route 3) > 76% (route 1) > 71% (route 2), indicating that alumination by aqueous sodium aluminate is most effective. This is probably due to the presence of Naf ions which balance the negative charges associated with tetrahedral aluminums. The BET specific surface areas are 85% (route 1) > 60% (route 2) > 42%(route 3), showing that alumination by AlCl3 in ethanol best maintains the mesoporous structure of SBA-15. Electron-spin resonance reveals a linear dependence of the Cu(II) ion exchange capacity on the tetrahedral aluminum content of the aluminum-containing SBA-15 materials. This suggests that the incorporated aluminums in the tetrahedral framework do serve as ion exchange sites.

Abstract:Zeolite-encapsulated subnanometer metal catalysts are an emerging class of solid catalysts with superior performances in comparison to metal catalysts supported on open-structure solid carriers. Currently, there is no general synthesis methodology for the encapsulation of subnanometer metal catalysts in different zeolite structures. In this work, we will show a general synthesis method for the encapsulation of subnanometer metal clusters (Pt, Pd, and Rh) within various silicoaluminate zeolites with different topologies (MFI, CHA, TON, MOR). The successful generation of subnanometer metal species in silicoaluminate zeolites relies on the introduction of Sn, which can suppress the migration of subnanometer metal species during high-temperature oxidation-reduction treatments according to advanced electron microscopy and spectroscopy characterizations. The advantage of encapsulated subnanometer Pt catalysts in silicoaluminate zeolites is reflected in the direct coupling of ethane and benzene for production of ethylbenzene, in which the Pt and the acid sites work in a synergistic way.
